Checked out this brewery in Freeport after coming across other places that had their beers. Generations is one of the main reasons to come here. It certainly has quite a few things on tap. A lot more in cans. They also have a few snacks. By the looks of the outside it wasn't anything special, just like a warehouse or something common. It's a lot more interesting inside. The taproom has enough room for the bar, and quite a few tables. Got a view into the back to see where the beers are made. There's a balcony where bands can play live music too. Beers are why people come of course. It's about $7 a pint. Best one we had of these was the Tawny Ale. This is an Irish Red of medium strength. It's about $12 for a soft pretzel. These are massive so they're great for sharing. One of the dips looked like peanut butter. This was actually fudge if you can believe it, and you can get cheese as well as mustard. For sure it's one of this city's main attractions. It's got lots of beers, and because it's in the Pretzel City, get one of those to munch on. They're closed Mondays and Tuesdays. read more

A very cool, relaxing, welcoming place to enjoy a beer, have great conversation with a bartender, and sit outside when the weather permits. A large bar with well designed beer garden. They have a variety of beers and one named after Freeport the Pretzel City! They have lagers, pilsners and ales. The environment is relaxing and the building stands out ! Since the main road is under construction , GPS did not help, but after we realized it kept rerouting us to the closed road. If in the area, stop in. The best thing was our greeter at the door she had 4 legs and a wagging tail.... the neutral decor throughout is very welcoming and relaxing 9 beers on tap and a full bar gives a great selection. Great selection of beer. I had the red which rivals the best reds I have ever had, my wife had the lager which was also good. Our daring friends had a pineapple jalapeño beer. I tasted it and it was pineapple up front and all heat after. Loved the patio with hops growing up a structure. read more

Great little spot in Freeport for you craft brew lovers. Gorgeous space, great beer, friendly people (was welcomed with a big "hello" when I walked in.) The building is absolutely beautiful! It opens up to a great beer garden that is perfect for a refreshing beer on a nice summer day. The brews here are delicious but you will have a hard time finding them west of their location so I hear. So that being the case, I highly recommend bringing a growler. Almost everything we tried was a home run. If you are driving by, make sure you stop in. read more

In the middle of BFE Freeport sits Generations Brewing Co. This beautiful brewing boasts a spacious taproom; a large, enclosed outdoor patio area, and a decent selection of tasty brews. We stopped in on our way back from Galena and sampled a few of their beers. I tried two, the 5 Blend Rye Saison and the Jelly Donut. Both were good but I was really hoping to try a collaboration beer they did ("Steve Bought Tacos", an Amber IPA) but that one had kicked, so I was a bit let down. It sounded amazing! Generations has a variety of styles available to please every palate. Their website lists the year-round beers available, barrel aged, seasonal, and specialty beers, as well as what's been retired. The prices are about the standard rate as far as breweries go ($5) and there's bottles to-go available as well (no growlers yet). Generations is also part of the Tagabrew IN/IL Trail, which is essentially a group that offers copper tags and customized brewery charms to collect while you brewery hop (as of the time of this review, Generations only has the tag, no charm). The bartender we had on the Thursday we stopped in was friendly and knowledgeable. I wish we had more time to spend there, but with a two-hour drive (at least?) back to the dirty 630, we couldn't stay long. I'd love to go back and enjoy the outdoor area but with the summer over, that won't be any time soon. It's a ways from home but if we're in the area again, I wouldn't mind stopping in. read more

This place is phenomenal! I wish it was closer to where I live! I was here for a rehearsal dinner for a family wedding, and a few of us went early to hang out prior to the festivities. The bartender was super friendly and nice, bringing us extra samples and providing recommendations (I wish I had caught his name, I'd love to give him a shout out!). The beer is good too-I had the Jelly Donut which bordered on the line of a sour beer (which I love). I tried samples of a couple others that were good as well. This is a brewing company so it's not huge in terms of seating (they just have a front tap room with a bar and a few tables), but it's got an industrial feel to it which was nice. There's also a patio area with seating that we got to enjoy. Prices were also reasonable-$5 for pints on most of the beers. They also had bottles you could purchase of some brews to take home. The big downside-it's kind of off the beaten path. I would totally visit more often if it was closer to me! read more

This is my second review of this wonderful place, located in northern Illinois where everything requires back roads to get there. We brought a growler in with us, anticipating a refill, and of course, spent a few hours sampling the various brews, just as good as they were last year. Some old favorites (like Pretzel City), and some newer concoctions. All excellent. And this time, we also had the pleasure of meeting one of the owners, Steve, had some great chats, and, well, yeah, we'll definitely be back again! We did learn that restaurants will deliver to us (will review separately); we ordered some items from Cimino's, who did not charge delivery to us at Generations, so there's a tip for all you hungry beer samplers out there! Steve didn't mind the part we had there on the corner of the bar, and we promised that we would indeed return when we are back in town. Definitely a local favorite for us! read more

Great service and craft beers I can actually enjoy. From the moment of our arrival on a Friday, we received wonderful, attentive, and full service. We sampled a few, and had a nice chat with the host and the patrons near us. The beers are also offered in growlers, or some in 4 packs. We enjoyed our visit. There is also a fabulous pretzel hoodie (&other swag) available. A great stop if you are in or passing by. We really enjoyed the beers (lager, pilsner, and sours) which is rare for me to find ones I enjoy. A great business that deserves yours. read more

What can I say...? WOW tried all 10 beers and they were each unique and interesting in their own way. I didn't hate any of them which is saying a lot for that many styles. Their amber and Oktoberfest were phenomenal. Also really enjoyed the bock and, surprisingly, the wintergreen ipa. I would've bet anything that it would be too piney but it wasn't at all. Generations Brewery finally opened it's doors on November 14 to many anxiously awaiting people in Freeport. Although we have been able to taste Steven Winter's creations at other places in the area, it tastes so much better at the source. Plus, being served by Steve himself makes it even better. The layout is awesome. We are able to drink our beers with a view of the brewing area. Steve also gives tours and describes his process to the patrons. Opening night was impressive. But it was the second visit that I enjoyed more. I visited a week later and it felt like home. Being greeted with an impressive English Porter as I walked in can make anyone's night! I cannot wait to come here again...definite new hangout. read more

Oh yeah!! My only problem with this place...it's too far from my house! We were in Freeport to visit Little Cubs Field when I spotted this one on the brewery radar. Had to stop in. It was only noonish and I had my kiddo with me so the beer had to be 'to-go'. Regardless, I enjoyed my stay. The layout of the brewery offers one large, open space. An outside patio also offers seating, a grill for anyone's use, hop vines growing as a backdrop and bean bags. I bought a 4-pack of the Pretzel City Amber which a couple buddies and I put back this weekend. Really nice flavor..an instant favorite. One loose piece of ambiance, Generations is home (or at least it was the day we were there) to a husky dog. I believe it was a girl and she's very sweet, walking from patron to patron for attention. I'm also a big fan of good conversation and the guy running the bar last weekend offered some great insights to Generations brewery, and what they're working on next. My visit wasn't conventional but I really liked this brewery. Look them up..you'll be glad you did! read more

Drove an hour just to try this place and was not disappointed! Steve was great- very informative and funny! The beer was also really good. We had the full flight and enjoyed them all. Ended up taking home a growler of the Jelly Donut which was fruity without being to overpowering. They don't have a food menu, but they do have a popcorn machine! We sat inside, but the outside was absolutely gorgeous with hops growing and a beautiful patio. Overall, a great experience and can't wait to go back! read more

Visited Generations to fulfill a Groupon and found a place we'll visit again and again! The weather was crappy but the setting clearly gorgeous -- can't wait to come back on a warm day and enjoy the patio! The beer was delicious and something for everyone's taste is available. Even tho the tasting room was hopping and there was only one bartender she was attentive and efficient to everyone. Also, altho it was busy and music was playing it wasn't too noisy to hear each other talk (love that!). Glad to learn that we can order in food to accompany the delicious beer and apparently in summer you can even bring your own meat to grill on their patio? Amazing! This place is just off route 20 and super convenient from Rockford. Will be returning soon! read more

As a Freeport native who just moved back after 30 years in Denver, I can tell you Generations beers are as good or better than most in Colorado- a state with over 225 breweries.
