Croissants were amazing and my brother is obsessed with the cinnamon buns. Sandwich I had was also awesome. The only thing was it sort of felt like the staff wasn't too happy to have customers? But I'd come back anyway for the bread! Try the apple galette too if you get a chance. read more

Simply... The best almond croissant, ever. Don't bother going anywhere else, you will waste your time. The olive bread, try it! Also the best, don't bother with elsewhere, it's already here.. read more

Blackbird Baking - Yelp said they closed at 6, already closed at 515.. Glad we went earlier, good enough for 2 visits in one day! - Bakeries Near Me - Toronto, Ontario

I did NOT like Cobbs when they were there. Too commercial. Blackbird Bakery however? OMG. OMG. OMG. I took the foccacias -- breakfast, regular and the one with cheese (can't remember their names), and I am IN LOVE. The breakfast one has an egg cracked on top with some chili flakes, and sells for $3.75 The other two that are larger, don't have eggs (one has pecorino cheese) and they sell for about $4.75 - $5 each. I have yet to try the Moroccan one with za'atar spice. If I could eat this bread every day for breakfast and lunch, I would. I would do it, and happily have a side of tomato salad and be a vegetarian for life. The focaccias are soft and doughy, not too greasy (I've had greasy ones before and they're gross), with herbs sprinkled on top, and it is just heavenly to bite into something so delicious. I still have one piece left and I am already contemplating how soon I can make it back to Kensington Market to buy another 2.. or 4. I haven't tried their sourdoughs or anything but I don't want to. I just want to sink into a pillow of focaccia oblivion and never wake up again from my dream. This makes me want to become a baker. I also have not experienced any bad customer service. The girl who served me was super sweet. read more

You can smell the bread from down the street. They have different kinds of sourdough breads. They also have pastries and sandwiches for an afternoon snack. Croissants are pretty good - almond croissant is even better. The canelé is the real prize though. It's a small french pastry that looks kinda like a little Bundt cake. It's really hard and crispy on the outside, but soft and moist on the inside. They only have them Thursday - Sunday though! So make sure you go on those days. My roommate's become obsessed with them and now he's been trying to make them at home every day, but they never turn out as well as the ones at Blackbird. Shh don't tell him that. read more

The bread here is definitely top notch and well worth the trip over to Kensington for if you don't already have a stellar bakery in your area. I got myself a multigrain oval that had the most amazing crust, flavourful and a great chew overall. I barely needed to toast it as the crust was already so ..crusty! I made myself a grilled cheese that same night (yes I was a little overexcited) with some aged cheddar from Prince Edward County and it was heavenly. I also ordered one of the fruit danishes when I lined up and it was the flakiest thing ever (in the best possible way). The custardy filling on top was sweet but not overwhelming, the perfect compliment to the buttery exterior. My only complaint with it was the fruit didn't hold on very well. I do agree with one of the reviews below that the method of choosing the breads on the wall is a little bit unsanitary and also chaotic. When it gets busy it's just hands all over the place trying to get to the goods. There were a few people confused on how they should go about serving themselves. Personally I think it'd be more efficient if they had one loaf of each bread displayed in the front case, you can order whatever you like at the counter and they would package it (and slice it if you want) for you behind (similar to how Nadege does their pastries). Also would make paying easier as there be a clear system of ordering and picking up. Other than the slightly chaotic set-up of this small shop, the breads themselves are delicious and well worth the hype. read more

As a French being used to being spoiled on great bread ... Well, stop: that doesn't sound right! There is also crap bread in France. Anyway let's get to Black Bird. I am very picky with bread. The crust, the smell when you break it, the slight acidity etc. Great bread is about awesome ingredients, a great oven, craft and real attention to details. If there is really something that doesn't suffer cutting corners that's bread. And Black Bird is right there. From their different types of breads (crusty baguette, sourdough, Pullman and including middle eastern type flat breads) to their croissants, cinnamon buns etc. everything is top notch. And their loaves keep very well over the week. I just wouldn't think of going anywhere else than this charming little boutique in Kensington Market where the staff is always smiling. Such a great place! read more

Incredible bread in Toronto. It's full of seeds so it feels healthy, but tastes soft and delicious. We went at around lunch time and were in and out super quickly! I tried the seedy loaf, a jalapeno cheddar scone and a lemon tart, and all three were absolutely delicious. read more

The line on a Saturday afternoon should clue you in to how good the offerings are here. The walls of bread area really pleasing aesthetic and give off the most amazing smells. I was only looking for a snack and the beautiful display in the pastry case really drew me in. I opted for a cheese danish which was realllly good. Slightly crisped exterior covered in just the right amount of sugar. read more

Ah the breads are so good. It's a blessing I don't live nearby or I will be there very often and be 20 pounds heavier! Multigrain bread was excellent. Good crust. I also tried the breakfast focaccia which had great flavor/herbs. It's a cute bakery with really nice staff. Next time I visit Toronto, I am definitely stopping here. read more

Five stars for sure, BUT they recently changed all the prepared sandwiches and I have now tried them all. My verdict: Bring back the Seitan - it was easily better than any of the current offerings. Every new sandwich except the turkey and the fritatta leans too heavily on horseradish which overpowers the rest of the ingredients - and I am someone who loves horseradish and mustard. Lighten up the horseradish just a bit please. read more

Small little space, but sure gets crowded! So cool that you can see the bread making and packing process happening right in the back behind the cash. Unfortunately there are no samples, but really you can't go wrong with the baked goods here! I picked up a whole loaf of Kensington sourdough (ask to have it pre-sliced at the cash) and less than a day later we're over halfway! The sourdough here is aaamazing - crispy on the outside and freshly moist inside, large alveoli, and distinctively fresh and acidic. They also sell fresh brioche (only on the weekends?), Pullman loafs, and sweet pastries. No seating here, so grab and go, but definitely a place to stop by for artisan, housemade bread during weekly grocery runs! read more

They have amazing breads that are fresh and high quality. There is a great selection and I especially like the sourdough bread. But what I get most excited for is the canale. Their canales are delicious! It is sweet and moist. The next time you plan to pick up some bread, check out this bakery! read more

My sister's been telling me about this bakery for the longest time but I never dropped by until yesterday. I squealed like a little girl when I saw it and dashed in. The mister just stared at me as if I lost it. We got two Asiago Rosemary (I think?) scones and had it for breakfast this morning. They are amazing! The flavour isn't too heavy and the texture of the scone is amazing - a beautiful crust on the outside and super soft inside. I went in initially looking for a loaf of Olive Bread (actual olives in the bread) but unfortunately they don't have it. I would love to see that on your menu if you don't already carry it. Will definitely return! read more

Love their sour doughs! Texture and flavour were both on point, croissant was nice as well. It was really busy when we came , lots of people waiting, so a suggestion is that maybe cover their products, for hygiene concerns. read more

Sourdough bread, crunchy baguettes, and gorgeous package design. Blackbird bakery, I'm glad you swooped in and took over for Cobs. Not as cheap as the next door Market Bakery, but you can definitely taste why. read more

Their canele de Bordeaux is better than any I've had in Bordeaux. The lemon tart has to be the best in Toronto. The chocolate cork is totally divine from the inside out. Yesterday I had a new creation: an Ontario Peach Gallette. I had to call and leave them a message because it was SO amazing. Lovely people. Brilliant bakers. And maybe the ONLY place that even knows what a Kouign Amann is, let alone pronounce it or make it! read more

Blackbird Baking had a good reputation, so I tried. Blackbird Baking is a trendy shop. Their ingredients are high quality and organic. However, the pastries are not delicious. Maybe people who are health conscious may like Blackbird Baking. read more

I came on a recommendation from a friend of mine whose passion is bread. I didn't buy any bread here. I did get a slice of freshly baked soppressata pizza ($6). With olive, parm, pecorino, fior di latte, and provolone, it was one of the best slices of pizza I've had in a very long time. In hindsight, that's basically 4 cheese pizza and olives. I like black olives, so no issues there. One of my friends isn't so big on olives, and they still liked this pizza a lot. At $6, it's not cheap, but it's a very good quality slice of pizza. I'd love to come back and have another slice. I'll try the bread sometime when it's not likely to freeze on the way back home. read more

Really enjoyed the bread here. Got here early on a Sunday before opening and got a guy holding up two hands signaling 10 (o'clock opening). So I went to move my car closer and when I got back, could hardly get into the door. Got my hands on this Olive bread only available three times a week (says the signage) and it was delicious. So many olives. The baguettes were also good, nothing can beat white bread but the wheat is also good. So many people are ordering lots of baked sweet goods, but I held off the enticement. But they are buying like 10 scones and 10 croissants, must be worth trying. People were nice, logistics were quick, one takes order and another does cash. One thought is there wasn't much room to stand, I wonder if a long narrow store would make their logistics more efficient than a short and wide store front. Either way, gets the job done. read more

I live in Kensington and am ALWAYS looking for a bakery alternative. I enjoyed Cobbs, and then they closed. I think I enjoy Blackbird EVEN MORE! Firstly, I love sourdough bread and this seems to be their thing. They have many types (I think 5, that's a lot) and the bread is perfect. It is hands down the best sourdough I have ever had. Yes, they have been sold out (like when I went) but I spoke with an employee and she said that they were just doing really well! And I was super happy to hear that. I'm down with the new bakery in town. So happy they've come to the market and I hope they stick around to stuff me full of delicious bread. read more

The best bread I have had so far in downtown toronto ; worth going there only to get the bread. Holds its own against the gourmet artisan bread you get in Sobey, PC, loblaws etc Go there try anything once & be addicted for life! read more

Food ***** - Service *****- Ambience ***** OMG- what a bakery. Not a week goes by without having their white and whole wheat pullman breads. Their desserts and focaccias are so damn good too. I have not seen another bakery in all of GTA that has anything close to what these guys have. We feel more than satisfied to pay more to have their bread instead of paying for cheap packaged bread from grocery stores. Strongly recommend read more

As if Kensington wasn't already great enough, this beautifully quaint bakery is the cherry on top of the cake. Every morning it booms with energy and the smell of fresh bread and the rustic aesthetic of the little shop itself is perfect. They sell all different types of loaves and sweets even catering to those that are gluten-free. Although the bread isn't cheap, it is extremely fresh and made on-site so it is well worth it. read more

I just ran in to get dessert. Cute little place with friendly service. I got a vanilla cream puff that was crispy, yet incredibly soft. I would've preferred a little more cream, but it was perfectly sweet and vanilla-y. read more

Since now is morning, and I am enjoying the bread I bought from BlackBird Baking Co. yesterday. This new bakery in Kensington market definitely worths to be a routine bakery when I am in downtown. The smell of the sourdough bread is able to be recognized at home even I am two, three meters from the bread. The store carries different types of sourdough bread such as baguettes( white, multigrain and a branch like baguette:) ), Artisan bread( Kensington sourdough, Toronto sourdough, Ciabatta (demi size) ), sweet treats or tarts and so many other selections.PS: they are a little bit pricy like $4-5 for a baguette and $5-7 for a loaf of bread. Also they carry fresh sandwiches made by using their own bread. Finally, the staffs are really friendly. They are always willing to guide you which kind of bread you want and show you the details of their bread. read more

Blackbird Baking - Toronto sourdough!!! Smells incredible! - Bakeries Near Me - Toronto, Ontario

This is the best bakery that I've found in my life, but it comes at a high cost, relatively speaking. Of course, many of the European folks are used to bread at least as good as that baked here at price of a dollar, but, unfortunately, this isn't Europe. A loaf will cost you around $6 here. read more

Two words! Fantastic bread!! Havent had bread like this is a long time.. Have tried white and brown and they are both delicious! read more

Hands down THE best bread in Toronto. Reminiscent of the much lauded Tartine Bakery in San Francisco

We've only tried the multigrain baguette, but that experience guarantees we'll try more. While the many delicious seeds and grains overwhelmed the delicate Double Cream Brie we picked up across the street to accompany it, the bread was everything you could want in a French loaf - great flavour with the perfect texture of crunchy crisp outside and soft inside. Can't wait to try the sourdough next! read more

LOVE THIS PLACE, it's hard for me not to be in the city and not pick up some bread. I've been coming here for the better part of 2 years now and haven't had a bad experience yet. It is definitely the best place to get your bread, I always walk in thinking of getting just a loaf of bread but end up walking out with a bag full. Notably their Baguettes are unrivaled in this city. I haven't had anything like it. Their baguettes have the perfect crust and light flesh. When you break into the crust of the bread you can just smell the amazing sour dough aroma and your mouth waters. Its great when you have the bread in your car or home and the entire space fills with the aroma of the bread. read more

Great bread, and lemon tarts. Friendly service, which is increasingly rare in Toronto

First of all change the cost from moderate to high. I love the bread and buy regularly. About 2 weeks ago I found the price had increased by 3.50 per loaf. 11.50 for a loaf of seed bread. Thats enough for me to look elsewhere. How is this justified? read more

Nice bakery spot. Everyone was nice and we were greeted as soon as we came in. I decided on a almond croissant. The croissant was flaky but lacked a lot of the almond flavor that I look for. The croissant was baked perfectly. They offer alot of different breads and baked goods. If I get another chance I will definitely stop by and try something else. read more

Compared to the Bordeaux style Cannelés, theirs has more vanille seeping time than the rest. The rum is a underwhelming. However, it's still a good treat nevertheless. If you get 6 the order is tax free. Employees are super kind. Good to visit to try a variety of loafs freshly baked from the kitchen in the back. read more

Bought seed and ryes bread, which is really crispy outside and soft inside. Must come back to try more baked goods here. read more

We love the Kensington Sourdough bread and they always have different pastries, sandwiches and pizzas to keep things interesting!

Without a doubt, one of the best breads in all of Toronto. It's not cheap, a sourdough baguette will run you $4.00 but one bite and you'll be a convert. There's a surprising lack of places in Toronto where you can get a damn good baguette. It's more than just skinny bread as the crust is an integral part of it and these ones have a crust. The bread also has flavor which too many supermarket loaves are missing. It's a bit of a jog but good bread is worth it. read more
