Last time I came here for a latte, I tried their sourdough sample, it was so good that I kept thinking about this place. I was finally in the area again and tried their breakfast sandwich and scone. Both items were perfectly made and you can taste a tad of sourness in both. I love this place would easily come back and try more of their items. I am so amazed at how they are able to make such a variety of items from sourdough like muffins, cookies, scones, etc. There's a small shop further into the store with local and artisan products. I love how they have a lot of sourdough products! I loved their pain au chocolat! It had a unique texture unlike any other chocolate croissant I've ever had. It had more density/firmness but was still flaky and the sourdough flavor definitely complimented the slightly sweet but not overpowering chocolate pieces in the middle! Heard so many things about dear grain being Toronto's best bakery, and it did not disappoint!! Despite it's many competitors being located on ossington, dear grain definitely stands out as one of the best of the rest. Upon entrance it was absolutely jam-packed with people which solidified the fact that it's definitely good. All I could smell and I walked in was the sweet scent of bakery goodness which just warmed y heart. I opted for the very interesting sounding sesame tahini cookie, and was blown away by how good it was. Sweets and savory will at the same time made for the perfect bite. Will definitely have to come here again to try the bread as well as all the other bake items. read more

Located in the heart of the Ossington strip, Dear Grain specializes in slow fermented, high hydration sourdough bread that is baked fresh every day. The space is like a warm bakery fused with a specialty grocery store. In addition to the wide selection of whole loaves neatly displayed along one of the walls, Dear Grain sells a number pastries, sandwiches, wine, frozen foods, and pantry items imported from, but not limited to, places such as Portugal, Denmark and Spain. I tried a few of the loaves, pastries, and one of the sandwiches here and loved them all. I highly recommend checking this place out if you're a fan of sourdough and in the area, though the loaves are slightly more expensive than other places. A great place on Ossington to grab a quick bite. Dear Grain is part bakery, part coffee shop, part grocery store. They sell a bevy of products from natural wines to sweet treats. I enjoyed the spaciousness of the shop and the fact that there was a bit of outdoor seating. Had their breakfast sandwich, a chocolate croissant, and a chai tea. Such a lovely boutique bakery! When I arrived, I was so excited by just the look of the place. Entering the door, I got even more excited being welcomed by the display shelves with variety of sourdough bread items on the wall. A sourdough lover's heaven! We got: Classic Sourdough (regular size) Ham & Cheese sourdough scone Sourdough bun Sourdough had very good tanginess and saltiness. Perfect taste balance for me. Just thought that the crust was not as crispy as I wished. Overall, I wished it had more chewiness - like the more you chew, the more flavors kind of sensation/pleasure. But when I toasted "really slightly", the crust got my desired crispiness. Ham & Cheese scone was very savory and definitely tasty - and it is filling. Would be perfect for a quick breakfast! A bit perplexed by Sourdough Bun. The taste was a sweeter side. The texture was airy but a bit dry. But it has a distinct sourdough aroma. I later learned that they use it for sandwich. Made sense! It should go very well with protein's saltiness and vegetables' moist. I regretted not getting their prepared sandwiches! When I left this place, I held the Classic Sourdough in my arm. Stumbled across this super cute bakery on Ossington! I've been meaning to try a good loaf of sourdough during this sourdough craze. Service was super friendly! However, at the time I went internet service was down so it was cash only. There are a good variety of sourdough bread choices! I definitely wish I took a loaf home. They are more of an "artisanal" price though, which is to be expected. They also have a ton of preserves on the shelf to make the perfect sandwich or snack - from pickled veggies, pesto, olive oil, canned seafood, jams, peanut butter, and even coffee beans. They also sell a variety of sandwiches on their sourdough which I almost caved in for. I ended up buying their cheese sourdough croissant which was phenomenal - definitely recommend! Giving it 4 stars because I wish they would heat them up for you, it would definitely be better if it was warm. I also opted to try their matcha with oat milk. Not bad, however I do wish there was some sugar added (or if they could've asked me if I wanted sugar). If I'm in the area I'll definitely be looking to buy a sandwich or loaf next time! We ordered a ham and cheese on baguette. The ham and cheese were fine, but the bread was unbelievably awful. Mealy texture and there was NO salt whatsoever in the bread. I've eaten a million baguettes in my time and this was the absolute worst. read more

Dear Grain has become a regular, must stop at bakery for me whenever I'm in the area. Their high hydration sourdough breads are so good and their pastries are simply delicious. I'm so glad to have stumbled upon this place! Their sourdough breads, the scones, and the cookies are a must try. The buckwheat cookie is a favourite in my household. The employees are also lovely and super helpful. I've inquired a few times about Ingredients and allergy concerns, and each time they've gone the extra mile There's a few small bistro tables inside but there's also a seating area outside. We happened to be in the area eating brunch when my dining companion mentioned he wanted to pop into Dear Grain to grab a loaf of sourdough. I hadn't heard of the place, but he insisted they make some of the best bread in the city. He's not wrong. I was tempted to grab a loaf of their sourdough but I wanted something a bit more traditional in terms of shape, so I decided to go with the Silhouette Bread. They don't offer their bread sliced (which is weird, since they make sandwiches so obviously they do have a slicer), so I grabbed the full loaf and was on my way. I tried it a little later and it's phenomenal. It's so flavorful and delicious that it actually enhances sandwiches to a degree that I hadn't been anticipating. I'd been eating meatloaf sandwiches for a few days, and when I made myself a sandwich with the Silhouette Bread, I was genuinely shocked how much better the concoction was compared to the sandwiches I was making with store-bought bread. We also grabbed their Chocolate Babka, because, thanks to Seinfeld, I can never say no to a Chocolate Babka. The price point, $17, was pretty outrageous but I figured I'd grab it anyway. And it's tasty but definitely overpriced. The regular bread is obviously the star of the show at Dear Grain. I can't wait to return and try that sourdough next time. read more

Dear Grain is located along Ossington closer to Queen St W where they offer a variety of items, baked goods and sourdough being their specialty. This Hamilton-born bakery started during the pandemic selling sourdough online where they often sold out quickly. Their storefront is a welcome addition to the Ossington strip. The main attraction is their bread, however, they do sell a variety of other baked goods (scones, sandwiches, buns, etc.), coffee, as well as a large selection of local goods (think jams, coffee, condiments, etc.). I've been to Dear Grain multiple times for their bread and bakery items as well as have purchased other local goodies from them. Upon entering the bakery, your eye catches the display of sourdoughs which are absolutely enticing. You do self serve and pick your own loaf where gloves are provided for you for sanitary reasons. Entering further into the store you see that they have a great selection of other baked goods. They also have frozen, at home scones, cookies, etc. Coffee is also available if you want some caffeine! I've only tried a few of their sourdoughs but the super seeded loaf still has to be my favourite. The loaves of bread come uncut nor does the bakery cut them for you (a good bread knife is definitely recommended!). The sourdough is incredibly soft inside where the crust is not too difficult to cut. The variety of seeds used in this particular sourdough complement the overall texture of the bread. The scones are also very delicious (I've tried the fresh ones in store as well as have bought a variety of the frozen bake at home scones). Overall, one of the best places for sourdough in the city for sure (I've definitely tried a lot of different places in the city!). Their frozen bake at home items are worth checking out. Service is often friendly (I even got a free morning bun one time) and you honestly cannot go wrong with any of their baked goods. A bakery with 'studio' in the name? Yep, you could ruin your budget on bread. If you are a lover of the loaf, however, the extra few dollars might be worth it for you. Dear Grain makes my favourite bread in the city. The process they use allows the bread to retain its moist texture and delicious flavour even after it's been cut into and left on the counter for a couple of days (potentially saving you money? on a fresh loaf to replace your stale one? maybe...). For my personal preference, the Classic Country Loaf sourdough is far too elastic and spongy and contains a very high proportion of white wheat flour (and as they say the dough is high-hydration which translates to high water weight.) Spelt and Dark Rye flour are the smaller whole-grain additions, not a whole grain flour country loaf of course. It slices very rubbery & starchy when fresh and doesn't have any crunch to the crust - but it should crisp up in the oven without drying out the interior. I may try 10+ minutes at 325°. The tang of sourness is pleasant and it does toast up very well in slices. There just isn't very much rustic whole grain fkavor to this fairly expensive small loaf. (For big whole-grain flavors, I head over to either of Blackbird Baking's two Toronto locations.) Hand-worked appearance is nice, and they do include malt powder to add color and perhaps sweetness. I can believe Dear Grain's claim this sourdough bread is highly-digestible. That slower, fermentation may be a process that takes time and occupies space, which is costly VS typical breads. Some (in fact, many) will prefer a sourdough bread with a more mild accessible grain flavor, this is it. read more

Really small location that's sells canned and bottled market goods if you're in a pinch though be prepared to pay. Prefer Black bird for the bread. Don't see myself as a regular here. It seems to be pretty empty every time I walk by. Staff don't seem to be happy working here. read more
