I stopped in at Mabel's Bakery to get Gord and I a cookie. Lots of choices and I bought 2 oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. Yum! I hadn't been there in a while so I wandered around. In the freezer, I discovered various premade doughs. So I bought a package of 6 oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, a package of 6 ginger molasses cookies and a package of 4 lemon blueberry scones. Having lived across the street for many many years Mabel's is my go to for consistent flavourful baked goods. Their focaccia, choco croissants, pies, cakes, ginger cookies and pecan tarts are my FAVOURITE and go to! They do also sell pre-made pasta sauces, soups and cured meats. The prices are reasonable, I find the service is sometimes amazing and sometimes a miss- hence the minus 1 star. read more

Mabel's on Queen Street is fantastic. With social distancing measures in place, I was able to place a cake order over the phone, for scheduled pick-up, for my coworker's birthday. It was beautifully made and ready for her on the day off her celebration. The staff I spoke to on the phone were friendly and very easy to work with. I have been to this Mabel's a few times. It was always at least okay. Not brilliant, but okay. However - today was undoubtedly my last time! I ordered a chocolate chip oatmeal brick [they called it a muffin - Ha!]. It was hard and dry and glued to the paper wrapper. I took the whole thing up to the counter to show the staff how black and off it looked, and they said, "well we use so much chocolate that it bakes very dark". I don't think so. There was indeed chocolate visible but it was all part of the hard crusty mess of inedible baked crap. And it tasted burnt! Burnt chocolate is not yummy. I have had this same item at the Roncy location and it was soft and melty and delicious! I think, if your customer comes to you with their purchase and shows you what they feel is a problem, there should be some good will towards making it right. But no - I was made to feel that I was stupid to think there was anything wrong with it. I will absolutely not go here again! read more

I was in the area so thought of trying this place. I had Iced Americano and Blueberry Danish. The Americano had two shots of expresso and had strong darker taste. The star shaped Blueberry Danish was simply delicious too! I would definitely try other bakery items next time. read more

This bakery is a short walk from the Gladstone hotel where we were staying. I was looking for a sweet treat and wandered into this place. They have a variety of coffees, teas and baked goods. There are also other items like salads and mueslis and packaged treats to take home. I asked if there were any gf items and they had gf almond cookies, vegan gf energy balls, and a vegan gf peanut butter rice krispy treat. I opted for the latter with a large rooibos chai. My tea was not filled to the top but I got distracted and didn't bother to have them add more water. The peanut butter rice krispy treat was large, sticky, chewy and sweet.....and soooo good. The slowest, worst service in Toronto. Ordered two bagels, waited 20 minutes. And I was at the front of the line. They just forgot to make them. Bagel I did get was a sopping mess of butter, and they don't even bother to cut them In half anymore. Zero apology for the mix up, and I had to remind them of what I ordered. If this was a one off experience I wouldn't be complaining, but it's literally like this all the time. Mabel's is so lovely! I find everyone working there super nice and helpful. I've mostly had their sweets though they do offer lots of savoury food and bread. My favourite thing from Mabel's is their brownies - they are to die for!!!! I think I always get one when I walk by. I've also tried their "peanut butter surprise" which is indeed a lovely, sweet, surprisingly yummy dessert. I recently ordered a birthday cake for my partner (carrot cake) and it turned out lovely. It was an extremely dense and beautiful cake. It has a touch too much icing for my particular taste, so I think next time I might try ordering a birthday pie (they do pies!!!). They also have a wide selection of sandwiches, hot food, frozen foods to cook at home. I believe we've tried a few of their sandwiches and have liked most of them. Go to mabel's!!! I used to go here every morning for 3 years until they jacked their prices up %25-%30. Around $6 for a small empanada, $7 for a loaf and $30 for a lasagna. These prices were %25-30 lower in October. I understand there's inflation and businesses have been struggling but it's only %4.7 year over year. At this point it's gouging. Can't believe I haven't checked this place out until today. I was really impressed. I was happily surprised to find that Mabel's isn't' just a bakery. While they have a nice cross section of sweet baked goods, it also has a savory side. I don't want to forget everything I just saw, so I'm going to break down my review in the sections of the store. FRONT ENTRANCE// Front window - collection of fresh made bagels, buns and bread. I know little (nothing) about coffee/espresso, but I can say, they had a nice looking machine, that i'm sure produces some mighty-fine drinks. Drink menu included a simpler selection of espresso based drinks, and about the same number offerings of tea based ones. The Magical DISPLAY CASE// The items that caught my eye in the sweet section where: mini cheese cake, lemon bars, mini fruit pies (the crust looked incredible!), brownies, mini chocolate flourless cakes, butter tarts & cookies. Savory stuff: which includes fresh cheeses, beef empanadas, to meat pies, quiches (veg & meat based ones) and jarred preserves (beats, cauliflower, corn relishes, pears in red wine, strawberry, In the FRIDGE/FREEZER section// Fresh squeezed orange juice, steak & mushroom pie, frozen fresh chicken stock (looked perfect), JACKPOT! They have about 5 different flavors of 1/2 litre Greg's ice cream (!!!). I saw individual parfaits in the fridge, (like, the kind with chocolate pudding and whipped cream on top!!!) I've only tried one thing here and it's their pretzel bun. It's the best bun I've ever had. I've never been into the store, but my friend always brought Mabel's pretzel buns for BBQs and other events. Amazing croissants! Buttery and flakey. Fresh. Amongst my favourites in the city. Peanut butter cookie sandwich was amazing too. The toffee tart was delicious: it's like a dryer butter tart. Oatmeal chocolate chip cookie was pretty decent. I had a meat-based breakfast item one time and that was good but forgettable. I am crazy about this little bakery. We tried the freshly made croissants, the mini pretzel loaf, the veggie quiche, and a toast cup. It was a great way to start the morning with all the fantastic smells of the bakery plus the yummy local coffee. The croissants (we had both plain & chocolate) were buttery, flaky, and fresh. I wish we would've tried an almond one too, but there were so many things we wanted to try. The toast cup with spinach and goat cheese was a really unique breakfast sandwich. The toast cup is basically a buttery yeast roll baked around an egg. It was a filling meal by itself and the spinach & goat cheese was a savory topping. As I was walking to the pharmacy from my hotel this morning I caught a whiff of something delicious. Before I knew what was happening, I was in Mabel's trying not to drool over the deliciousness. I chose an everything bagel with cream cheese for my breakfast and I don't think I could have chosen anything better. Also I love the bread here. I've tried the white sourdough, rye, artisan white and raven rye but the artisan white it's definitely my favorite. Overall it's a bit pricey but it's worth it. read more

I was in charge of coordinating a large work meeting and, with that, I had "free rein" on where to order lunch from. ENTER: Mabel's Bakery. I'm a frequent Mabel's patron and know how delicious their prepared foods are, so I thought it would be nice to give them a larger order. Am I ever glad I did! Working with Mabel's catering was seamless from start to finish. The food came on time (and on budget), everything was fresh (and healthy), and our entire team couldn't stop raving about how delicious everything was. I had several people come up to me after asking where I had ordered lunch from. Always a good sign! We ended up having leftovers, which we shared with the rest of our office. One lucky recipient of leftover dessert even said, and I quote, "This brownie has changed my life." Enough said. :) read more

So disappointing :( I was so excited to try Mabel's after reading the rave reviews. Unfortunately, I had an underwhelming experience. I ordered the peanut butter rice krispie. It was very dense and chewy, almost like fudge. It tasted nothing like a rice krispie square. It was so cold and the staff didn't offer to warm it up. They also didn't have any seating so I was forced to eat standing on the sidewalk outside the store. I'm disappointed in my visit and I wouldn't return. read more

This is my local bakery and they do a lot of things right, including their bread, lemon squares and pies. Last week, I noticed they had a sandwich sign on the sidewalk advertising soft serve. I popped in and ordered 3 ice creams with toppings. It came to $20. I wish I'd taken a picture of the chocolate they drizzled on the cone, for $1, because it just looked sad. I get that it's COVID and downtown is expensive, but when you're a local joint, don't spit in your customers' faces and call them jerks. That's how paying $20 for sad 3 ice creams made me feel. So, if you're in the neighbourhood and in the mood for ice cream, skip Mabel's and walk over to BangBang on Ossington and get the real deal. read more

Asked staff what type of muffins and after much hesitation was told...one is oat zucchini and one is a weird ginger date thing...way to promote a product! Tried a lemon tart and a pecan tart here yesterday. They were $3.50 each. Pecan was the big winner. Just the right amount of sweet and savory. So good. We ate it in Trinity Bellwoods because it was so unseasonably hot. I also saw that Mabel's has Montreal style bagels. Worth trying at some point! read more

Love Mabel's loaves! Have tried the K2 rye and the rye sourdough. Loaves are in the $5-6 range. Don't by shy to ask them to slice it (perfect for grilled cheese, and for freeze now, toast later). Mabel is more than just great bread, Mabel's sweets and squares are the best! I wish I could say I've tried more of them - they all look so tantalizing - but I love the peanut-butter-rice-crispies-chocolate-triangle thing so much, I can't stray unless I get that PLUS a second thing. So I also know that the peanut butter cookies held together by caramel cream are incredible, too. (Most of the squares are in the $3 range.) I should at least try all the peanut butter things, they seem to have peanut butter nailed. Since it's Easter Sunday today, I thought I should get with the holiday and have a hot cross bun. Mabel's had these strewn about the store, stacked in the bread area, another huge tray on the floor, a platter near the cash. $2.25 each, and were soft, fresh, just sticky enough. (I ate it with a coffee from Tim's down the street... where I brazenly asked for butter and a knife that I used on my hot cross bun - thanks, Tim's, I owe you one). The only thing I haven't loved from Mabel's is the sausage roll. The pastry itself was superb, but the sausage was so over-herbed (floral and perfumey) that I couldn't eat it. The morning muffin was a sourdough muffin with a baked egg. Not bad, but the first one we had had a fly in it. The almond croissant was delicious - flaky and the filling was flavorful and didn't have any of that artificial marzipan taste. The bakery had no air conditioning when we visited though. It was sooooo hot! I was sweating while waiting on line for only a few minutes. The service was pretty bad too. They were not friendly and had nasty attitudes. Thank god for a respite from all the bland Portuguese bread in the neighbourhood. Mabel's does quality French-style baked goods. Very nice crusts on their baguettes. Beautifully, buttery crunch on their croissants. All reasonably priced. In addition to those bakery staples, they also have a nice mix of prepared and "ready-to-prepare" cook at home items like quiches, pies, and other yummy treats. Don't go in hungry. I don't know what they're making, but the inside of the restaurant always smells so damn good, you might way over-indulge. It's like my old gym that was adjacent to a Krispy Kreme...such terrible temptation. Staff are always friendly and ready to help. After I go to the gym, I like to reward myself with a cupcake. I figure, I'm still burning calories, so THIS is the time to eat unnecessary junk! I think Dr Oz said it was okay or some crap. So I walk in there and I see this mammoth cupcake that has a huge pile of frosting on top of it and I buy it. They give me this box that fits two cupcakes so I buy a carrot cupcake and a coconut cupcake. They were so tantalizing I had to hide the garbage evidence cuz I don't want my roommates to "notice" my eating habits. Anyway, the reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I got an elderly red velvet cupcake recently and it wasn't fresh at all. I bit into the frosting and there was a slight crunch. The frosting was still good but the cake tasted kinda like cardboard. It kiiiinda turned me off. But if I see the coconut cupcake in the window, I'll go back. Wandering down Queen Street one Saturday afternoon, we decided we needed coffee and wanted something other than Tim's or Starbucks. I'm so glad we stopped in here. I ordered a latte and it was delicious! No need to add anything to sweeten it up (or hide the bitter taste as necessitated in some of the afore mentioned establishments). First off if this was just a review for their croissants, I'd say 5 stars all the way!! Hands down best croissants in the city! And this from someone who bakes her own croissants regularly. If they were a little closer I don't know if I would need to bother. They were flakey but not so flakey that they just crumble at the touch like some croissants. They had the perfect doughy interior with a great fermented flavour. Something that is lacking in many store bought croissants. And my guess is they use organic flour because I often can taste the bleach and a funny after taste in non-organic flour. So why 4 stars? I also had a grilled cheese that wasn't bad but wasn't 5 stars... I thought it'd be a good way to try their bread without getting a whole loaf and they sliced a fresh loaf but the bread had the wrong texture for grilled cheese and the cheese wasn't that great either. It had a taste that I equate with the taste of the rind from Brie. So I'd say go for the croissants!! And feel free to pick up one for me. :) Next visit will be pain au chocolate...
