First off if this was just a review for their croissants, I'd say 5 stars all the way!! Hands down best croissants in the city! And this from someone who bakes her own croissants regularly. If they were a little closer I don't know if I would need to bother. They were flakey but not so flakey that they just crumble at the touch like some croissants. They had the perfect doughy interior with a great fermented flavour. Something that is lacking in many store bought croissants. And my guess is they use organic flour because I often can taste the bleach and a funny after taste in non-organic flour. So why 4 stars? I also had a grilled cheese that wasn't bad but wasn't 5 stars... I thought it'd be a good way to try their bread without getting a whole loaf and they sliced a fresh loaf but the bread had the wrong texture for grilled cheese and the cheese wasn't that great either. It had a taste that I equate with the taste of the rind from Brie. So I'd say go for the croissants!! And feel free to pick up one for me. :) Next visit will be pain au chocolate... I am addicted to their bagels, croissants, lemon squares, cheesecakes, cookies, pizzas, cheese & more. Have I mentioned that I live 2 minutes away? This is my go to bakery on Queen St. West. My work pees are addicted to your baked goodies as well. I get requests every day for croissants & pretzel bread. The staff are very friendly. I think my favourite part about Mabel's Bakery (besides the yummy goodies) is that you can see their staff making yummy sweets and other non sweet goodies. read more

Mabel's on St Clair is a bit of a disappointment. Went in to buy 2 cupcakes. The fella at the counter couldn't understand that I wanted 1 chocolate and 1 raspberry. Finally got him to put 2 cupcakes in a box. At check out, instead of tapping the small purchase on the POS, I had to press a bunch of buttons to override the tip option. Please don't expect a tip for over the counter service. And what happened to contactless purchases? When I left the store, I looked into the box only to realized the fella gave me TWO choc which I went back to return; they just gave me a third since they can't take back the goods. And to top it all off, the choc frosting was tasteless and the cupcake itself had the consistency of boxed cake mix one would buy from the grocery store. Place looks great. I got the red velvet cake here and it was very rich, dense and not too sweet! It is a small bakery that sells sweet treats, cakes and many more. There was a small lineup where I and to wait about 8 minutes before I was assisted. All in all, servers seemed friendly and it was a clean environment. read more

I look forward to the coffee here like nothing else. Since my last review, I tried their personal strawberry rhubarb pie (was not a fan; felt it was lacking flavour and wasn't sweet enough for me), the cinnamon bun (didn't like; too dense and not enough icing), their freshly baked plain croissants (amazing!), and a mango italian soda (amazing!). It's annoying that when you want them to warm something up, it takes like 10 minutes... why don't they have this oven preheated at all times? I still love this place, though. read more

We live across the street from Mabel's and are frequent shoppers there. It is a fantastic neighborhood spot and a great place to drop in on a Saturday or Sunday morning when you're walking the dog. Our favourites include: croissants, almond croissants, sourdough bread, any of the cookies, the carrot cake, the empanadas (Veg or Meat), and the roast beef arugala & horseradish sandwich on a pretzel bun. Every item is made with care and the best ingredients. Also they brew a mean cup of coffee. They are not getting 5/5 stars from me because the prices are a touch high (although I respect the business and the quality of ingredients they are paying for), and MOSTly because my husband adores the almond croissants - The Grid (RIP) even did a write up on them - and they never have them anymore. Inventory management issue I suppose. Anyways if you haven't been, GO. Awesome spot to grab a dessert if you're having a dinner party too - pies, cakes, squares etc. are perfection. read more

I'm on a quest for the best chocolate chip cookie. It's not that I'm a snob - I love the President's Choice The Decadent chocolate chunk cookie - but if I buy a whole pack I'll eat it all in one sitting. So I'm trying to make trips to better bakeries and have one or two cookies at a time - quality over quantity! This one was very, very good. Small, and on the pricey side (to be expected for a nice bakery), but it was very good and well worth the price (I think $1.24 each before tax?). I had two - that was superhuman restraint right there! It kinda reminded me of Jacques Torres' cookie in NYC (but smaller) because instead of chips or chunks, they have flat sheets of chocolate laced into the cookie - very, very good! And great ingredients. The cookie base was buttery and rich. I also especially appreciated that although it was chewy, it wasn't totally raw in the middle, which skeeves me out (I'm looking at you, Le Gourmand!). I'm trying to be a bit more disciplined in eating properly and I was by myself so I didn't go nuts and get the cinnamon bun, meat pie, flourless chocolate cake, or grilled cheese I was eyeing. The walk over was far (and kinda sketchy in certain areas!) so this will be a rare treat for me, however. *ETA: I also appreciate that this cookie isn't so huge that it would ruin your appetite after just one. Le Gourmand's (only other place I've been to on my cookie quest so far) is very rich but too heavy. read more

Not impressed, not a good experience. Ordered a gateau basque (custard was OK, but not that much the crust), a lemon tart, and an orange blondie to go. I did not like the lemon layer, too acidic and gelly; the crust was not so bad in itself, but was on the frozen side and made up 2/3rds of the thickness of the square. what a bad surprise, when back home, I discovered 2 other lemon squares in my box instead of an orange blondie! read more

It isn't often anymore that you can actually find a stand alone bakery, and you have to give this bakery credit for being in the biz. I went to the location on Roncesvalles. It is an upscale, nicely decorated store with bagels, bakery as well as deli items. It also has a small seating area. I only tried 2 of the items there - the cinnamon bun, and the cup cake with icing. The cinnamon man has a goliath appearance, and is irrestible to the eye. It is huge, and slathered with a creamy looking icing. Unfortunately, it doesn't deliver on taste despite its formidable appearance. The dough is mild and a bit buttery, and tastes like a brioche dough. Nothing cinnamon bun about it. The icing is off - I found it bland, it appears to be a watered down cream cheese and milk mix. I am guessing the icing is cream cheese, but it doesn't taste like it. I tried 2 cinnamon buns on 2 different days just to be sure of my opinion, and because the bun itself is so visually appealing. Both buns were a bust. I gave most of the bun, after a few regretful bites, to the birds on Roncesvalles. The cupcake also had a formidable appearance, stacked high with a pyramid of icing. The first bite was delicious, but after the 2nd and 3rd bite, the massive amount of sugar in the icing is overwhelming. I ate all of it, but felt cloyed with sugar afterward. Less sugar, and perhaps a clove or lemon twist spice in the various icings, would make this a better cupcake. Mabel's is visually enjoyable experience, but these 2 pastries are not up to scratch. read more

Honestly, this place has THE best brownie in the city. I have not had one that was so perfect and fudge-y. I liked it so much that I've been to two of its other locations, and i'm super impressed by the consistency, because all of the brownies are equally as good. Really decent prices too! The only thing this little bakery on Queen West lacks is better seating. I was lucky enough to arrive at Mabel's just as a pan of cooling butter croissants was being put out. Needless to say the croissant was most excellent and the coffee was very good. The service was Queen West standard...cool, polite and efficient. There was an quirky infusion of personality in the humorous descriptions found on the chalkboard menu which bounces me back to the baked goods...made on site...delicious...a tantalizing selection. The croissant wasn't enough. I can report that the date square I chased it with was just as scrumptious. I hesitate as I type this...the date square may have been as good as my grandmother's. The door was propped open & the smell of baking was wafting out so I went in to grab something, only to be yelled at that they weren't open & I needed to leave. Today I Picked up a Black Forest Ham and Cheese sandwich was the fridge. It looked like it had pickle on it which is great however it was a sweet relish! Make sure you read the labels! There wasn't a lot of ham on either! Maybe two slices. The price for this small bun sandwich is ridiculous! I'm never buying it again. read more

There is a first and last time for everything...This shop in the Junction is absolutely atrocious. There sits this big store on the corner with not much to offer inside it. The 2 baked goods from the limited supply on the shelf that I did buy this morning were just so so and waaaaaaay over priced. No need to ever go back, that's for sure. Why is a good bakery that makes just regular sandwiches and half decent baked goods that don't cost the price of a gourmet meal in Toronto so HARD to find? I live in the neighbourhood and have passed by this Bakery everyday since they have opened. I generally thought they would be on the pricey side and therefore had not popped in to try anything. However, last week their almond croissants were screaming at me through the window and I decided to give them a try. They have cute little baskets with decadent different croissants and breads and have prices scattered around on little pop up cards. Everything is more expensive than usual but after trying their almond croissant I can understand why. The croissant was on the flat side and was very flakey but it had just the right amount of almond butter inside it and made the walk home that much more enjoyable. I noticed this place also leaves left over bread in bags outside their door at the end of the night for the homeless which is awfully sweet. I am a fan of this place however it does pinch the wallet! read more

I have no problem with the food. Everything that I've had is good. What I do have a problem with is the front of house staff. They are so slow, almost like it's their first day working there. You'll wait 15 mins for a bagel to be toasted, or 20 mins for a breakfast cup to be warmed. It's like they have no idea what they are doing, both front staff looking at each other blankly. They'll take your order, and forget about you 5 minutes later. The number of times they've noticed me standing and waiting and asked me what I'm waiting for, when I've been waiting for a slice of quiche for 10 minutes, and no one else is in the store is INSANE! Hire new staff who aren't complete stoners or idiots already. I dread even going there now. Make sure you have an extra thirty minutes if you're planning on getting anything more than a cookie. read more

Excellent decor and atmosphere, incredible selection, including a grab and go cooler filled with milk, juices, ready made foods, cheese counter. Had a croissant, quiche, latte and hot chocolate at our table. All excellent, fresh and well made. Highly recommend this little bakery for cakes or a quick lunch! In a city with very few places offering croissants done right, Mabel's does a pretty good job. Their pecan pie is great for those who love it, and the beef empanada had a flaky, tasty pastry and ample beefy filling. Get it with the chimichurri. as a Mabel's die hard Almond croissant fan, i am very disappointed that they have a policy on NOT taking pre order for almond croissant and i was ordering more then 48hours advance. i wanted to order 15 Chocolate almond croissant for my god daughter's birthday and they've refused to take the order and told me that they would do it, if i am willing to pay $7 for each croissant. (i would much rather give that money to other businesses) so, they now can kiss my money goodbye and i know they don't think 15 croissant don't worth any money to them, but way to ruin your business reputation. i will NEVER recommend anyone i know again and you bet!! i will go to every social media to write my review on your business, read more

I am basing this review on having been converted to Mabel's artisan's breads. There are two or three varieties, including their pain de compagne, which I regularly purchase and store sliced in the freezer and then warm in the toaster oven for breakfast or lunch. The price of their loaves is reasonable considering the exceptional quality and the good size. In my opinion they do not COMPARE to Blackbird Baking company whose breads I found to have a crumbly texture and were relatively flavourless and while ACE is still a very good bread company, their loaves taste relatively mass produced when compared to MABEL'S. I go to the St. Clair location, where service is always friendly and attentive. On the weekends there is a slightly greater selection of baked goods (cinnamon rolls and cheesy focaccia). The sweet offerings that I have tasted are delicious, but I have repeatedly purchased their various fruit-filled danishes which appear to be the best value given comparable product elsewhere in the area and sell out quickly. Always a good idea to come as early as you can. read more
