I was in the area and had to stop by Circles & Squares after hearing so many good things and it absolutely lives up to the hype. It's an adorable spot, even just from the exterior. Parking is a bit tight and chaotic, but I did notice a sign mentioning additional rear parking on weekends, which is helpful. Before even stepping inside, the patio caught my eye. Definitely a great spot for when the weather warms up. Inside, the space is thoughtfully laid out with a variety of seating options and shelves of packaged goods like coffee and cookies. As you move through the winding line, you pass by their fridge and freezer items (think ready-to-go meals like shepherd's pie and grab-and-go options like chia pudding), followed by freshly baked breads. Honestly, the hot honey pizza focaccia looked incredible! Last was the drink menu and their pastry display. It's the kind of setup where you can't help but look at everything. I went in knowing I wanted the iced banana matcha, and also picked up an almond croissant and a carrot walnut loaf. Service was friendly and welcoming. The iced banana matcha met my expectations based on what I'd heard. It's not the strongest matcha if you're a purist, but it leans more toward a dessert-style drink with really enjoyable flavors. It's definitely on the sweeter side, but even as someone who prefers "not too sweet," I still loved it. The almond croissant was beautifully flaky with a rich, flavorful filling, and I appreciated the generous amount of sliced almonds on top for added texture. The carrot walnut loaf was another standout. It was super moist and well-balanced, not overly sweet even with the icing. Overall, everything felt thoughtfully made and high quality. Heard of this from the butter tart festivals and had always wanted to come try it out. I actually came here twice in the span of 2 weeks, the second time the power was out so they only had cash only options. The bakery is situated in an industrial area, but they've done well to decorate the front to feel neighbourhood friendly. Pecan maple butter tart - The winner of the classic butter tart and is supreme! Crust is buttery, solid and thick. The filling is gooey and complex with flavour, not just sweetness. Would highly recommend and would get again. S'more butter tart - Same amazing crust, but the filling was too sweet for my liking. Not to the fault of the bakers as marshmallows and the chocolate was adding to the sweetness. Nice to try, would not get again. Earl grey scone - A good size scone with good EG flavour. Scone were not dry, but they were also not buttery goodness. Icing on the top added some sweetness to the scone. Nice to try. Looking forward to come back and try some more goodies! read more

I had been "eyeballing" this shop for some time, since they were proclaimed the "best-of-the-best" for butter tarts. We have a planned trip through Montreal and our friend is a butter tart maniac so I got a dozen assorted. My partner and I shared a maple pecan one, which was apparently the winning tart for the competition. It did not disappoint. Smooth, buttery and moist. It went down great with a fresh cuppa Joe. The service was efficient and courteous and plenty of seating inside and out. The part I loved the most, was that if they even had music piping in, one could hardly hear it - so nice for a change. The North York store is very easy to find parking. I definitely intend to try some of the other goodies at some point. read more

Their butter tarts are AMAZING (it's the only thing I came for so I can't speak on anything else), they have the flakiest crust with deliciously rich, flavorful, and gooey filling. Totally understandable as to why their butter tarts are award winning. I was surprised with how big their selection is for how small of a shop they have. They've got SO MANY items ranging from cookies, cakes, bread, scones, croissants, coffee, tea, and more. There's even more seating upstairs-- which I didn't get the chance to check out because I was in a rush today, but I'm sure it's just as cute and aesthetic as their main level. I've heard a lot of good things about circle and squares and I've always wanted to check it out. It's located at a quiet neighbourhood but even on a weekday, the cafe is quite packed! The staff was so nice and recommended us to order the cruffin, saying it's her favourite. We ended up trying 3 of their baked goods. All of them were very delicious. Quaint cafe located in the east side of the city. They have a really nice patio where you can enjoy your drinks during the summer. Tried their peaches n cream cruffin and honestly I'm not really a fan of it. I did not enjoy the filling but the outer crust was fine. Prior to our visit, we had heard that the butter tarts were the star of the show, and they did not disappoint. I was worried about the mocha being too sweet so the staff offered to halve the sweetener, which was a great suggestion. There is a good amount of seats and free wi-fi, so though it can be a bit noisy, I'd still recommend this as a work-friendly cafe. Food: 4.5/5 - I came with my cousins and I had the caramel popcorn cookie in the picture. I absolutely loved it because it was so different, crunchy, and had a unique flavour. It reminded me of a like a caramel macadamia nut cookie but different. Service: 5/5 such friendly staff, they were so nice and helpful with the recommendations, despite the long line. So glad I was introduced to this hidden gem at O'Connor and Victoria Park area by a friend who loves it! Lots of great, baked goods and prepped foods. We had lunch there and we were lucky to get a seat inside. I got a ham and cheese croissant and a prepared salad called Spanish Revival. And then I had a classic butter tart which was huge! All were very delicious and freshly baked here. Counter service was fast thankfully because we came before noon. Got crowded at lunch time! Very friendly staff. Ambiance was very comfortable inside but when we went outside on a picnic table we both got stung by wasps! So many outside! But still recommend this place. This hidden gem has been blowing up in popularity in recent months, and I can see why. It's cute, got a huge variety of baked goods, and it's good! Went on a random day, and already at 11am there was a line. Luckily not too long of a wait, but it gave me time to peruse their fresh baked yummies. Breads, tarts, sandwiches, croissants galore! And they have interesting flavour combinations! I Since it was closer to lunch, I chose a sandwich (Shakshuka flavour) and a chocolate croissant, and both were buttery, flaky, just perfect. There is some seating inside so you can definitely grab a drink and chill or work, there some tables outside as well. Parking is street parking and it can get super busy, especially weekends. The staff were super friendly, you can see them working hard to get all that fresh baked goodness out to the customers! Apparently their butter tarts have won numerous awards (but I hate butter tarts do I didn't try). First time visiting this new cafe! The location is a bit out of the way and not commute friendly as it's surrounded by warehouses and not much sidewalk traffic - best to visit by driving! The location itself is quiet, clean, and an ideal place to work or study. The cafe has a lot of unique and tasty pastries available! We ordered a passion fruit cruffin, chocolate banana loaf, choco chip cookie, smoked meat grilled cheese and a toffee latte! Each pastry was delicious and around $4-6. The grilled cheese was $10 which was pretty steep imo but it did have lots of meat and was very filling. Behind the counter, you are able to see the bakery factory and see all the workers produce the baked goods which was very unique to see at a cafe. Unbeknownst to me, I've been eating their baked goods for years, at my favourite local cafes - their pastries are a hit, every single time. Having finally visited Circles and Squares myself, what a sight it was to see an even bigger, delicious selection. The Bartley drive location offers a different lunch menu item every week. Think bistro sandwiches type deal. In addition to baked goodies, there is also a small selection of loaves, cold sandwiches, and salads available. The power bowls are great on-to-go. As for the more delectable stuff, you cannot go wrong with a butter tart. They are HUGE and some of the best you'll find. Some of our faves are the cookie butter blondie, Mac and cheese croissant (yes, you read that right), apple pie croissant, and their snickers butter tart. For someone who doesn't have a sweet tooth, Circles and Squares has gotten me hooked. read more

The story of Icarus may well be a cautionary tale for this charming bakery in East York's light industrial corridor along Bermondsey Avenue. Icarus was warned to not fly too close to the sun but he soared with abandon and fell from the sky. My metaphor is inspired by a recent experience at Circles and Squares. As lovely an environment it is and as tasty as the food is, the service was frustrating. This can happen when business grow fast and are unable to adapt to higher volumes. I had ordered a sandwich that was on display so I thought it would be a quick process to throw it in a bag. Instead, I waited about 10 minutes for their one food prep guy to make 3 sandwiches for the people ahead of me before someone realized they didn't need to make my sandwich. This, while 3 "cashier/order takers" were chatting with one another - at least one was in training. I was also initially ignored by the order taker and I have no idea why, it reminded me of high school. But that's another story. It is a nice place. Let's hope it soars with its success rather than being burned by it, like Icarus. read more

This place is quite out of the way, not in a typical cafe type location where you would walk by and decide to pop in. You would have to make a trip out of it, which I did. peering behind the cash, they have a huge industrial sized kitchen, I assume they might make these items and it be sold at other cafes or supermarkets. Which the would make sense why they are located where they are. Thankful they were open on a long weekend so i could grab a light lunch and coffee in the very late afternoon. I was worried that they would be out of most items, but that wasn't the case. they had plenty of buns, pastries, cookies etc available. They were limited on the loaves of bread, there were only a handful left. I grabbed an everything but the bagel croissant (this has to be my new fave way of eating a croissant, if i don' think about the calories), raspberry scone, blueberry scone, a few cookies, and a loaf of olive bread. They had an amazing looking pepperoni pizza bread with hot honey but i asked and they said it would be too spicy for kids so i didn't get that one. The scones were delicious, great flavour and super light and fluffy. Also grabbed an iced latte because it was so hot. Note that they don't sell regular coffee, just espresso based coffee drinks. Just wanted to also comment on service. They are amazing! Very patient at answering all questions and super friendly. After our purchase, my son and i were going to eat outside on their picnic benches. But it happened to be windy outside, so somehow my sons scone blew off the table and landed on the ground. I was going to give him the other scone, blueberry, but i noticed that it wasn't in my bag. So i went back in to ask if i got charged for a blueberry scone because it wasn't in my bag. They checked and i was so they gave me my blueberry scone, and i mentioned my son's raspberry scone landed on the grass outside, and if i could just buy another, they were so kind and just gave him another. I will definitely be back to try out all their other offerings. It was so hard to choose just a few things. One that that kinda sucked was parking is very limited. There's 2 or 3 parking spots only, and from what i saw there's a no parking sign on the road right in front of them. So if you come during a busy time, it might be difficult to find parking. read more

Overall, their food, baked goods, and drinks taste wonderful; however, after the customer service that I experienced I will no longer be frequenting this cafe. I have been here multiple times because I thoroughly enjoyed the items I have tried, but it only takes one bad experience to make you never wish to visit again. I went to the cafe with two of my friends, we ordered drinks, food and bakery items. When our drinks were finished and we were called, I went to the counter to get my drink. My friend's drink was finished as well, he was standing directly behind me, so I grabbed his espresso to give him and the girl with long brown hair behind the counter accused me of trying to steal someone else's drink. I politely told her I know its not my drink, however that it is my friend's drink and she rolled her eyes at me and said well people have been stealing drinks. I understand that, however, I was clearly turning around to give my friend his drink and then when I grabbed my drink she goes sorry I guess and rolled her eyes again all while making faces at the other employees. I have never felt so mortified and upset after an experience and I typically don't write reviews, however, this one really hurt me. I have not returned since and I will not return again. read more
