This was my second visit. The first visit was much different and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Today upon entering there was an overwhelming noxious odor. You could not have eaten inside. The young gentleman behind the counter asked us what we would like to have and my mother and I told him we would like a crêpe. He made a face at us. I said is that a problem can you do that? I ordered the chocolate dream cake and WOW. I have never had anything so creamy and chocolatey. It was similar to a tres leeches cake (milk cake). The cake is super moist and yes, milky. However, the best Boston Cream doughnut I have EVER eaten (and I've had plenty), came from the Blackbird Bakery in Bristol, Virginia. It is the perfect density, not too fluffy, not too cakey. The cream to cake ratio is perfect, and the generous amount of chocolate on top makes the flavor combination irresistibly and delightfully delectable. The atmosphere reminds me of the Astoria Pastry Shop in Greektown, Detroit, Michigan, except Blackbird has more seating. The staff is friendly, even late at night or in the wee hours of the morning, since they are open 24/6. They are closed from midnight on Saturday through Sunday. Everyone needs a sabbath. I flew in from LA for a college reunion, and landed in Bristol with nothing but pastry on my mind. I drove well over the speed limit all the way up 81 from the airport, because I needed cake in my life, STAT. I ordered the Red Velvet Cake AND an Individual Cherry Pie. I can say, without reservation, that it was the lightest, fluffiest, most perfectly sweetened Red Velvet Cake I've ever had. It didn't feel heavy at all, which was dangerous because you could feasibly eat 6 of them before realizing you're not going to be able to stand up with your pants buttoned. So very, very delicious! The Cherry Pie was a gamble for me, because as a rule I don't like Cherry Pie. Blackbird bakery broke that rule. It was so good. I also stole some of my friend's blueberry bar, and immediately put it on my "Must Have" list for next time. Thank you, Blackbird Bakery, for giving Bristol an alternative to Krispy Creme, and for being open late at night for those of us who frequently wake up with a dire need for pastry.
