I have no idea how Bristol Virginia got lucky enough to have a world-class bakery except that the people here are obviously on a mission. Got an assortment of things to try out. Everything looked delicious. What we tried: *Strawberry Cheesecake- yummy. I prefer a harder crust but the flavor was good. Hubby didn't like the texture but I thought it was pretty good. *Mini cannoli- flavor was great but the shell was soft....I like a crunchy shell. *Blueberry cake doughnut- very moist. *Blueberry Lemon cheesecake bar- yum *Chess bar- nice crust and sweet gooey middle:-) *Blueberry Muffins (I think they were day old, on sale by the register)- haven't tried them yet....waiting until I can warm and butter. Look like they have a good sugar crust on the top though. Looking back I wish I would've gotten something chocolate to try! There was a lot to choose from and it was hard deciding what to get:-). Stopped by one night after a play...still crowded with a 30-minute wait. Offerings were somewhat sparse at that time of day. I had heard great things about them and was disappointed. The cake bars were okay, a couple were dry and heavy, none had any wow taste to them. Visited blackbird on our way back to chattanooga. made a special stop off at blackbird bakery due to the outstanding reviews and feature in a magazine. Sorry to say it was a huge let down. We have tried donuts and coffee in many states and this place was one of the worst places ever visited. The decor was fantastic, but the coffee was rancid at best and we got a 6 pack of different donuts. Tried the first donut - it was not good at all, barley edible. After we tried a donut we kept telling ourselves maybe the next one would be better. NOPE. They were all not good. I do not recommend wasting your money at blackbird bakery. read more

I've eaten donuts at various places on the East Coast and this is probably the worst place I've purchased donuts from. They had little flavor, the "filled" donuts had a minuscule amount of cream inside, and the texture wasn't great. My drip coffee was okay but the latte my boyfriend ordered had to be doctored up in order for him to finish it. This is a solid stop for donuts though certainly not the freshest or most unique I've had. The coffee is "American style" and not what your looking for if you are serious about your coffee (they offer 3 sizes of cappuccino. Not cool.) the greatest part of this stop is the cute atmosphere and the fact that they serve Homestead creamery. I would stop here again, especially since there are no homemade alternatives close by. read more

First time here, absolutely one of the best dessert cafes I've ever been in. We tried the coffee, very mild and flavorful, good jolt of caffeine. Local roaster knows what they are doing. Tried three items, the standard no nut brownie, a red velvet cake donut and the red velvet brownie. This is where the place really shines! The donut was really well made. Balanced, Moabite and crunchy without being to sugary or bland. I'd eat a dozen, but then the trip to the hospital would be too freakin' expensive! So do me a favor, eat them all so I don't have too! The chocolate brownie was creamy, Smith, earthy and delicious! The recipe they are using is well thought out. The best thing I had a taste of was the red velvet brownie. OMG! This is what I imagine every red velvet cake should strive for-moist, flavorful, great crumb. Now I'm going to be obsessed and spending weekends trying recreate it! I've been getting their cakes for all my special occasions for almost 3 years. They are absolutely delicious! However I feel they are lacking in the decorating department. I've had minor issues every time but once. The last time I ordered a "very pink cake with purple, yellow and green flowers and hearts" for a little girl's birthday and I got a pale cake with two pale roses on the top, no hearts. Our daughter who attends ETSU couldn't wait to take us to the Blackbird, she has talked about it for months. This past Saturday my husband and I were treated to the Blackbird for the first time and it did not disappoint. We had a two part strategy; eat breakfast and then walk around town and return for take out treats. Our first trip through the line my husband and daughter chose the quiche, a blueberry donut, and a latte and I chose a piece of the pumpkin coffee cake. As we were paying for our order Kim, the manager stepped up and said it is 11:05 and we are required to pull the quiches for the day so the two quiches will be no charge. We thanked her and got to talking and telling her that this was our first visit and what a great impression she made. We inhaled the quiches, donut and the coffee cake. All were absolutely perfect especially the pumpkin coffee cake--loved the thin lines of pumpkin through the middle. It was a beautiful day so we sat outside and enjoyed our meal. As promised a few hours later we returned for our take home order. This time we chose the individual lemon cheesecake and the key lime bar-both of which were large enough for two people to share. Both tart and absolutely delicious. Kim remembered us and joked about us making two visits in one day and told us she expected us to be back. Yes, Kim I know you will read this and we WILL be back.
