We first took mom here last year for Mother's Day. I had been a few times, and was familiar with the place. She loved it. That would be her last Mother's Day dinner. My father and I decided to visit again this year, to have another great meal and remember her. The night did not start out well. After being seated, we waited. And waited. And waited. We watched multiple servers walk past us, taking drink orders from some, while taking checks out to others. Not one of them acknowledged our existence. Tables were sat after us who had drinks. We sat, unacknowledged. I finally found a lady, sitting at the bar, who was able to summon a server. He didn't seem thrilled to be there, but, maybe that was just us. He was talkative with his other tables. He apologized for the wait. While I appreciated that, the wait wasn't really the worst part. It was sitting there, completely ignored by everyone who worked there. If you see a table that hasn't been helped, wouldn't you at least welcome them and reset their clock? Again. Not a great start. But, on to the food. We ordered the crab bisque. It did have a bit of sherry in it, which was nice, but was just over the threshold of being too salty. The server never asked how it was, and, given that my request for a refill was met with silence, I assumed no quality check was coming our way. Like I said. It was ever so slightly too salty. Main courses. The grouper was good, if a bit overcooked. The jerk sauce was not spicy at all. The kitchen didn't deliver the Kahlúa mashed potatoes. I assume they're delicious. The duo of mashers I got were pretty damned good. Dad really liked the soft shell crab. The fries were good and the collards were as well. Our server doesn't know how our food was. He never checked back to ask. Which, I just don't understand. The guy seemed like he was annoyed that we were in his section. He did bring us the check. So, there's that I guess. More than anything, I'm just disappointed, because I wanted to have a great night and think about fun memories of mom. The service made that impossible. Which just kinda sucks. read more

Well if you ask my mom, she loves this place! Myself, while it's just OK, I'd visit again to try something else. I have only visited twice, but I will return one day to try something else. I believe my first experience did not do this place justice at all. My mom usually orders the Chef's special and she loves it every time. I usually do not like to order the same thing as my dinner guests, but I am excited to return to try the Chef's special. Overall, the restaurant is casual. You can dine in jeans and a tshirt and be fine. Parking is available and it doesn't seem to be an issue. Lunch is served until 3pm and dinner is served at 5pm. There is a full bar present as soon as you walk in the front door. I recommend you check this place out. It's a family style restaurant... seems like an average place, but I think there is huge potential here, this is why I will revisit again. Have fun and enjoy life :) read more

I made reservations for May 21 for 8 a week in advance yet when I showed up on time I had to wait for them to get a table ready and I verified my appointment twice. They never once called me the day of verifying my reservations like they told me over the phone when I made them. I ordered the crab cakes the 1st bite was all cartilage the 2nd bite shell. I took 2 bites only because of that. I never tasted crab. It was all filler. What a huge disappointment after we spent several hundred dollars. I never complained because I was so disgusted and didn't want to ruin my Daughter-In-Law's birthday dinner. But the waitress, Shannon I believe her name was, never asked if I was ok with a full uneaten plate in front of me. I also ordered the gouda mashed potatoes and I couldn't even eat those it didn't even really taste like gouda so I don't know what kind of imitation cheese they might have used but I love cheese and they were too cheesy, creamy but way too cheesy and strong taste it. I should have spoke to the manager but again it was my daughter-in-law's birthday and I didn't want to ruin it but as far as I'm concerned I will never go back unless they replace that meal with something worth going to eat. My husband and I decided to stop in a couple of weeks ago for dinner, before dropping my stepdaughter off during a visit. We both have recently found a newfound love for seafood, and after 5 years of driving past the Black Pelican, finally decided to stop and give it a try. The atmosphere is relaxed and reminiscent of an old time seafood eatery; nothing fancy, but comfortable and familiar. Although they do offer a handful of options such as pizza, I would stick with their specialty, which is seafood. I wouldn't go into a pizza shop and order seafood. My husband and I just wanted snow crab legs, and were delighted that you could just order that, without all the sides or extras. Their prices were a bit steep for the snowcrab, but well worth it. They were thick and meaty and slid right out of the shells. Simply perfect! We also ordered a side of sea scallops, which were quite good. My stepdaughter, who is 9 and not at all a seafood fan, did order the kids pizza, which was plentiful. They also gave her a free frisbee, which she was excited about. Our waitress was top notch! We couldn't have had better service. Will definitely be returning to the Black Pelican again. One star off because their bathrooms were not very clean. read more

We went here, because we happen to be driving around Greenbrier Mall thinking we were gonna go to a chain restaurant. I looked up restaurants about a year ago to see who had swordfish (my significant other's favorite fish), and I remember coming across Black Pelican. We were so pleasantly surprised with our entire experience- pleasant bartenders greeting us from behind the bar (and bidding us farewell when we left- that was the cherry on top of our whole experience), to meeting our waitress at the table. She was really great and honest- she helped my significant other choose between three different dinners. I'm not a big seafood fan, and I wasn't in the mood for pizza (which is their non fish option), but next time we go, I'm definitely going for the pizza! Our meal started with a basket of fresh pita bread that was so perfectly seasoned with heaven. That in and of itself was so good! I got a side Greek salad, a side of fries (very delicious, I might add), and friend okra (my favorite part of my dinner by far!! SO GOOD!!). My S.O. got the swordfish & rockfish dinner, which came with rice pilaf of some sort & caprese salad. He was so happy with the dinner choice our waitress recommended- he didn't love the rockfish, but that's not his favorite anyways, but the swordfish was the best he said he's ever had. Visited this place for the first time yesterday. Due to Covid I am very picky on where to eat and this place looked very sanitary and was not crowded. I really appreciate seeing that. The staff were very friendly and attentive. My drink never went empty for long. The food was pretty good. I had the southern fried flounder and shrimp. My dish was delicious. Only complaint was with the rice pilaf, I felt it was sort of bland. My guy had the fish tacos and there were no complaints on his part. For appetizers we had the fish Bites and the honey rotisserie wings. We loved them both. The sauce for the wings was a game changer. Really limited options in the area of my hotel so was pleased to find this spot. Party of 3 and food was great, pizza, flounder and shrimp, and fish duo special which was a nice piece of monk fish and sword fish. Flavors were spot on across the board. However service was a challenge. I expect that these days but when the waitress has time to chat it up at the bar I shouldn't go almost the full meal without an empty glass. Add to that when I finally got up and asked for refills for the table she had time to have hostess to get her a drink then come to educate me on how short staff they are because nobody wants to work. Absolutely loves the sweet potato mash. Everything else was so so. The food was hot, not very tasty. Service was super slow and the background noise of other table was way way too loud. We changed tables from the very loud group... and still couldn't hear anyone speaking at our table. We were a group of four yesterday, we each ordered different menu items and each of us were pleased. I had the steak frites. The medium cook was perfect and I loved the sweet potato waffle fries and small salad it came with. Another had a special, someone had shrimp & grits, one crab cakes, I have to say all at our table were pleased. Service was very fast, right on time and kept up with everything we needed. This was a spur of the moment stop. I've heard she crab soup was good, and hoped to compare with my top places. However, it wasn't on the menu that night. Oh well. On the outside, it doesn't look much. It reminded me of a tourist spot in Orlando. When inside you notice it's not your average seafood restaurant. It's a little classier than your Red Lobster, but not as big. The prices will confirm that. All the servers seemed friendly and actually enjoyed their job. They serve a complimentary basket of fresh pita bread that comes out warm and served with butter. It's very good. Additional baskets are $2 per order. I almost ordered a second basket. They over special items that aren't usual menu items. I decided to try the Fry Special that came with fried Mahi Mahi and scallops, rice pilaf and green bean medley. The seafood was fresh and cooked perfectly. The scallops were sweet and juicy. The green bean medley didn't looked flavorful, but it actually tasted good. I also tried the crab cake and fried shrimp. Stopped in for lunch today with a girlfriend for lunch before our monthly shopping day. We were seated and greeted by our server. Black Pelican is one of a handful of restaurants open on Monday for lunch. An added bonus is they have a very nice lunch menu with reasonable prices. Plus their iced tea is only $2.25! Service was very good. The food was so plentiful and tasty. We both chose the Wanchese Fishermans' Risotto. The was a nice amount of shrimp, scallops (large in size), and crab meat. We each ate 1/2 of our meals. I ate more for dinner and still have some for lunch tomorrow. Three servings out of one meal for just $14.99. I will be back soon. read more

Had lunch there the other day. First for what was good- the Dark n Stormy to drink and the crab cake. Now what was not so good- the bread triangles served with the Brie appetizer. It was not toasted and just didn't go with the brie. Then the seafood risotto which had one..one scallop and 3 small shrimp in it! I couldn't find the crab meat. It was rice and sauce. I'll start by saying the service was great! Our server was friendly, informative and came over right when we sat down even though she was working a larger table. The appetizer list is pretty comprehensive... a little something for anyone. I love this because sometimes I'm not in the mood for a big meal. That being said, the meal portions are substantial. We got two appetizers, the feta flatbread and the evening special, pork potstickers! Both were good and came out hot! I got the Greek salad which was huge and my boyfriend got the special which included a fabulous swordfish. If you're planning on eating here, I recommend going to the seafood route. I've been to this place two separate times, but I will say our server the second time was leaps and bounds better than the first one. Our drinks were always full and she checked on us quite a few times. Now, the food. I ordered the fried oyster basket and it was great! I was a little disappointed that it only came with five oysters though. For $14, I expected a little more seafood and a little less coleslaw and fries; however, the oysters were plump and tasted fresh. My wife had the po boy, which came with mahi mahi on that particular day and she loved it. One suggestion I would make is for this place to start leaving ketchup on the tables, or adding a small cup of ranch to their potato sides. The kettle cooked chips and fries taste great, but they are a tad under-seasoned. If you order the ranch (which is homemade and delicious) it solves that problem. I look forward to returning the next time we crave some seafood. read more

We have been dining at Black Pelican for years. Recently the quality of the food seems to have gone down hill. My wife had a greek salad that did not resemble any we have had before. There was no perceptible romaine but plenty of field greens feta was sparse kalamata olives absent. Maybe the chefs should have a greek salad elsewhere for instance Orapax to get inspiration as to what a greek salad truly is. Restaurants cannot survive on past success only so long. So this "restaurant" has a "Captain's Room" which you reserve... But you can't reserve it... They took our name down for a 12 person party and then when we came in the room was taken... When we spoke to the hostess she immediately went with a non customer service attitudand said "Technically we don't reserve that room, it's a first come first serve" Soooo what's the point of taking down reservations, taking someone's name and number? Nice business model y'all have... This restaurant thinks they can carry on this pompous attitude because they are the only "Seafood" restaurant in the area... Do yourself a favor... Had lunch there with a friend and it was delicious. The lunch portions were smaller than I was expecting but I was comfortably full.

We have eaten here and the one in the Outer Banks for years. Here in Chesapeake the dinner was terrible. The evening started well with Mushrooms stuffed with crabmeat and hollandaise sauce they were hot and delicious. The Service great all night and great drinks prices. Then dinner we ordered the Captain Calabash Seafood Platter, it was terrible. The food was over breaded, over seasoned and the carb cake was pasteurized at $43.00 it was over priced and unpleasant to eat. We were unable to complete the meal. It is sad that in a seafood community like Hampton Roads to have to eat such institutionalized food. read more
