My medium rare steak was still mooing on my plate last night. Somebody please help this chef out! He didn't even salt the meat. A good chef would heavily salt a steak. It's what you do. My fruit cup was mostly pieces of melon that were cut too close to the rind, and the eggs were those kind you buy from a bag. So don't order scrambled eggs, order over hard or something like that. Cozy atmosphere, nice to take the whole family. Menu is mainly meat based, steaks, burgers... The works. Not very vegetarian friendly, I ordered the grilled cheese that comes with a cup of soup for under 7 bucks. Although the cheese was Kraft singles it was still pretty good. The corn bread was delicious. Must order. The waitress, Britney I believe her name was, was an excellent waitress. Very kind and patient with our hectic family. Super sweet. Great home style food. Have eaten at more than 8 of these place and never had a bad meal. They have the best pies. This visit I had the hot turkey sandwich. The plate was loaded with turkey and real mashed potatoes. Only reason they don't get 5 stars is that they don't use Heinz Ketchup. Great place for a solid, filling meal. Very rustic, and your typical "diner" atmosphere. I went with breakfast for dinner and it was a very generous proportion of your typical American breakfast fare -- scrambled eggs, pancakes, and bacon. On our trip we pledged to not eat in fast food restaurants and chose Black Bear for it's location and Yelp comments. The food was good and the portions were huge. The decor is as kitsch as kitsch can and that always fun, especially with kids. One caveat - because it is probably the best game in town, you may have to wait a bit for a table and food once you're seated. We were lucky and were seated when we got there, but we were by the door and could see a lot of people waiting. I stopped in a for a late lunch on a Sunday. I had the peach iced tea, which was just deliciously peachy. I had parts of the California burger (pepperjack and avocado), which was an average burger but not prepared medium, as requested, and the egg scramble with avocado, mushroom, and tomatoes, which was decent and fairly large-portioned. Came in during dinner time, but got sat fast. I think some of the waitresses would do better if they worried more about the customers and less about finishing their conversations with each other. The food portions were big even for the kids meals. Food seemed to take a long time coming out, even though it wasn't packed. The children's mac and cheese was a hit with my 3 kids. My father and I ordered the less portion of biscuits and gravy that come with hash browns ! The biscuits and gravy as well as the hash browns were terrible and on top of every thing the service sucked !!! And I was charged a additional $8 for the 2 sides of hash browns that says it comes with the meal . So you're in the middle of No-Where and you need breakfast before hitting the track. The Black Bear Diner stands as a testiment to those who need hard-core sustenance, and I mean that, as a breakfast at this artery-clogging and heart-stopping diner will literally keep you fed for the entire day. Order anything, and I mean anything, and you will get a plate worthy of feeding 4 Americans or 12 Ethiopian refugees. The Surgeon General warns us against breakfasts like this. A three egg omelette is a monumental thing, stuffed full of your choice of cholesterol laden delicacies. A side of sausage, bacon or ham is a bit more than a side, it's your protein quotient for the entire day, as does the pile of yummy home fries fill the carb quotient, and I dare you -- I dare you -- to finish the whole plate. And you get biscuits; three of them to be exact, if I'm remembering correctly and they stand about three inches tall and are perfect unto themselves, but take you to cholesterol nirvana when spread with soft butter and a spoonful of strawberry jam. Every T-Hill track day starts with a Black Bear breakfast, which morphs into a bit of snack about 11 a.m. and then maybe even a full on lunch at 2 p.m., when the biscuits become the sandwich slabs for whatever egg and meat is leftover. I'm telling you, an $8.00 breakfast at the Black Bear stretches into a day's worth of hearty food and caloric density. Stopped here on my way back to Modesto from Red Bluff. We had the Chicken Fried Steak and eggs for breakfast - fantastic! The country fried red potatoes are awesome, but the biscuits are sooo big and good! If whatever you order doesn't come with a biscuit, ask for one on the side, they are the BOMB! Meal portions are almost enough for two, prices are good for the amount of food served. And don't forget the pies and strawberry shortcake, order one and share! You won't be disappointed! read more

We went to have lunch to. We did get seated pretty fast but our food took long. I ordered a club sandwich with French fries my daughter a hamburger basket. My husband a chicken fried steak, eggs over easy and country potatoes. My daughters and my plate sat for a while over the heat lamps. Finally got them fries soggy some burn and some tasted raw. Country potatoes nasty old. I asked for fresh fries and they got us some but they tasted not cooked all the way. I don't think we're going back for a long time. Every time my husband goes to the track here we have dinner at the Black Bear. Portions are huge so we order from the smaller plate menu and it's still enough to fill us up and we still have room for the second best BREAD PUDDING in the world. (The first best goes to Bocanova in Jack London Square, Oakland - sorry) The pot roast is fork tender, the tri-tip is awesome and the meat loaf is almost as good as mine. If you go, save room for the bread pudding or take it home to heat up with that caramel sauce poured all over! I can hardly wait for AFM racing to start so we can go to the Bear! read more

So yes the food was good but, after sitting there for about 30 minutes with no food or even a nod from our waitress, we had to ask whether our food was ready. I've been here many times and I feel disappointed more and more each time. I use to love black bear. The country potatoes I've ordered don't taste fully cooked and today they tasted like wet rag.
