Though their display case was understandably bare (glad to see business is good!), I was able to get a great selection of regular-sized donuts & larger, premium ones (think: cinnamon roll, apple fritter, twists, etc.) I had a few bites of a maple bar (which I so regret not getting filled with custard), as well as a glazed old fashioned donut. Pleased with how fresh & non-greasy they tasted. Personable service from the woman assisting us. She explained which donuts can be piped with custard, lemon, chocolate, or cherry filling. This is the second Donut Wheel location I've visited in the past year, & so far they're two for two in friendliness, cleanliness, & quality.

And it's dry and kinda like it's old? Mind you, she got mine from in the back room. Not the glass case in front? Now I don't really care if it's a day old one or a fresh one. But I know the difference. I was prepared to buy all they had left. But to be played like that? Was just rude. Use to go there everyday. Not any more. I'll drive to Orland if I have to. To Billy and Emily's to get doughnuts if I have to. Or make them myself. That's crazy.

Castle Donuts has easily earned a spot among our all-time favorite donut shops. Are they decorated like some over-the-top social media donuts? Not necessarily. But honestly, who cares when they taste this good? Everything was fresh, soft, fluffy, and packed with flavor. The cinnamon rolls, bear claws, and apple fritters are HUGE! And the apple fritter? The smell alone had us hooked, and somehow it tasted even better than it smelled. I'd much rather have a donut that's simple on the outside and absolutely incredible on the inside than one that's picture-perfect but tastes like air.
