While the food was good, the service was poor BUT not because the waitresses were bad but because they were way understaffed and that would be a management problem. This used to be a good restaurant but after Covid there's a lot of people not knowing English. Because I knew that I literally confirmed my order twice and she still brought me the meal deal. Located off the I-5 at Cypress and Hilltop in Redding, this location is a block off the interstate in the busiest part of Redding. The parking lot is plenty big, with parking along the side and back of the location. Black Bear is a chain restaurant that delivers pretty consistent decent food. I have dined at about two dozen different Black Bear Diners in California, Nevada, Arizona, and Oregon. The food is always good with fair portions for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Having dined in the Redding Location too many times to count, I have always found their food to be very good, service good to excellent, and price to be fair. On this visit, we were in a hurry so we ordered food to go. I was disappointed that I ordered an omelet, they did not include the potatoes or toast with it. In addition, I paid extra for a fruit bowl and had to remind them to put that in the bag also. Once we got the food and went on our way, we found the omelet to lack cheese to keep it together, the country potatoes were good, and the fruit was very good. This meal was a huge contrast to the recent visit to the Black Bear in Yreka, where the staff there is on the ball and goes the extra mile to make sure everything is top-notch. Did the Redding Location have an off day? I think so, I will definitely give them another chance in the future. I was planning on leaving a review as we went to a more expensive restaurant the prior night and had terrible food. Morgan and another male waiter seemed like the only ones serving and were running around working so hard. The atmosphere was amazing to see them in their flow. Shortly after we left a customer that was sitting next to us drove by and flagged us down and let us know my dad left his wallet. While sitting and waiting, I watched plates of food being served up in the window. I saw two plates up, and the server said something to the assistant manager. He then took his bare hand and took the fries off one plate, and put them on another plate. The plates were then taken out to the guests waiting. I said something to the server, and she said it didn't matter they don't use gloves anyhow back there. I was just shocked as I had just seen him touch his sunglasses that were on his head. So I used to stop at this restaurant often when traveling to Northern CA. It was generally always pretty good. Was there yesterday, Saturday and boy, it has slipped. Service was not that great. Seemed pretty disorganized in fact. Didn't see the waitress hardly at all during the meal. And the food, I had roast beef, was really not very good at all. Once upon a time, Black Bear had great food and large portions. Now, well the portions are still there but the food? Seemed like all the seasoning was McCrormicks or out of some kind of food service flavors packet. The gravy was not particularly complimenting the roast beef, I mean come on, it should boost the dish. Nope. The corn muffin was not fresh. And my pet peeve? Well, if you are going to charge $4 for a cup of coffee, shouldn't it be fresh and not scorched after sitting for a while? Restaurants often "marry" their coffee, that is, combine pots of older with newly brewed. This was a bad marriage. I had asked for fresh and was assured, oh, yeah, just made. Well, when you do the creamer test, that is, pour one of those creamers in and there is no color change at all, that's a bit of a giveaway. Not good. The waitress finally took our order and was very pleasant, but once the food arrived the waitress did not return to check on us and the food or to offer to fill up drinks. It's Christmas, it's 2020, some people are not able to enjoy the holiday feast with family. Hey! It's us e are those people not celebrating with family today. So instead we looked to Yelp to show us whose open today. We landed on Black Bear Diner and they did not disappoint! The online ordering platforms is easy to use and limited to a delicious Christmas menu. Our wait estimate was 25 minutes we showed up early and watched as the staff here got orders out quickly. We walked in 5 mins early and to our pleasure the food was ready! I asked for some ketchup and while waiting I got to Witness great leadership from the older woman running orders. She complimented her fellow workers each time she sent an order out with a great job. She even thanked them for adding notes to the order like how many bags total. The lady before me told her "you guys are doing a great job" this lead turns around and yells did you hear that guys she said we're doing a great job. You could feel her hype, her vibe keeping her team smiling and looking forward to sending out one more happy customer. I went to Black Bear for breakfast and noticed that they were serving avocado toast. I decided to try it, since the avocado toast I had in LA was good. However, it was just sliced avocado on 2 somewhat burnt pieces of toast with some tomato, lettuce, and fruit on the side. In comparison, the avocado toast I had in LA had mashed avocado, lemon juice, smoked paprika, and some garlic powder and salt. For $11.49, this was a ripoff. The only saving grace was that the avocado was fresh. Sadly, the end result was a bland, chewy, and burnt avocado toast. I also had the freshly squeezed orange juice and that was delicious (I'm giving a star for that). Overall, it was an underwhelming experience. If I were to go back, I would order a different dish. Been coming here for a few weeks. This is the corporate place. Black Bear corporate is in the same town. The car show is in town this week so they are slammed. My question is if you know your going to be busy order more. It seems this place has been out of the signature hashbrowns more then once. I come here because I love the hashbrowns and the good thick bacon. There have been a few times this has happened. Not a real fan of the back up hashbrowns. If you know your going to be busy...order a little extra. Most time they do it good here. When busy they tend to over cook the bacon. They would get 5 stars if they were constantly on point with the food. Cooks do a good job. This is one of the better Black Bears. It help when the big wigs stop by almost every day. read more
