I stopped here when visiting Redding last Thursday (5/25/23). I ordered the chicken fried steak dinner and chicken noodle soup. The chicken noodle soup was good. It was generous with the chicken, vegetables, and noodles. The broth was rich. I also got a cornbread muffin. For my dinner, I got the chicken fried steak with garlic mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli. A chicken fried steak is a hamburger patty prepared like fried chicken strips. It was good, but I do prefer ordering meatloaf or pot roast. The service was quick and orderly. The atmosphere was nice like the other Black Bear Diners I've dined. These restaurants are consistent, and they are good choices for travelers in the western United States. read more

First time here, traveling from North to South California. My mom and I stopped by for dinner because she really wanted to try this place. Service was excellent, our server promptly got us our drinks and our orders. I got the tri tip with a baked potato and mac and cheese and it was delicious! It was one of the creamiest Mac and cheese, the baked potato was perfect, and the tri tip was amazing! The seasoning was perfect and cooked to perfection. My mom got the roast beef, with onion rings, mashed potatoes and green beans with bacon and she loved it. The atmosphere was perfect. Quiet and friendly. My mama bear in me was starving! We were traveling down and immediately greeted and sited. Big platters to feed a trojan and I am not sure if we were just starving but everything was delicious. Atmosphere is quaint and cozy. LOVE the coffee mugs! Stellar customer service and this is officially my favorite "Black Bear Diner" in the entire state of Cali. We use to go out Black Bear twice a week on average, but as of a few years ago the quality of the food went way down and the service is as bad as it gets. This was my 3rd visit in a row where everything was bad. It feels like most of the staff doesn't care about their job or the customers. Most of the staff looks like they live at the mission and have or have had addiction issues. It was over 35 minutes from the time we ordered some eggs before we finally gave up and walked out. The server never checked on us after taking our order, and I couldn't even get a refill on my coffee for over 20 minutes. It was busy but it wasn't crazy busy. For 9:30 am on a Saturday morning it should've been packed, it use to be, but we got right it. There were several open tables, so there really is no excuse for the poor service. At this point unfortunately the manager should probably be let go for allowing the standards to have fallen off so far from what they were previously, if not for that then for being so bad at staffing decisions. Unless those changes are made I think Black Bear in Redding is on its way to going out of business, which really upsets me because I've been going to Black Bear since the first one opened in Mt. Shasta. Hope they get it together! read more

We have been to this restaurant a few times while driving to Portland or returning home. Our meals and the service are always very good. I've been coming here every single time I'm in Redding, California as I have family here and always seem to make it up here for the delicious food and great service that they have here. I love their food, plentiful , tasty, great comfort food at affordable prices, great service always from the waitress's and waiters, they are quick to offer condiments and anything else you might need while dining here. For a restaurant that is known to have a huge breakfast menu, one would assume they could do bacon. Ordered breakfast and the bacon I received was cold, hard and waxy. This location was a positive experience for me. From the moment I arrived, the service was friendly and polite. Though quite busy when I arrived, I was seated rather quickly. It wasn't long before a server assisted me in placing my order. When I got my food, the taste was better than expected. My eggs were cooked perfectly and the steak was very flavorful. This used to be a good restaurant but after Covid there's a lot of people not knowing English. Because I knew that I literally confirmed my order twice and she still brought me the meal deal. And I told her the classic come with 3 French toast and she gave me 2. She said she literally changed me breakfast to the meal deal because it was cheaper... really?? So when someone orders breakfast the waitress feels it's her place to change your meal to a cheaper plate?? She argued with me and wouldn't change the meal. I'm vegetarian and the first time she brought bacon on the plate. After I told her when she took the order no meat because I'm vegetarian. While the food was good, the service was poor BUT not because the waitresses were bad but because they were way understaffed and that would be a management problem. Located off the I-5 at Cypress and Hilltop in Redding, this location is a block off the interstate in the busiest part of Redding. The parking lot is plenty big, with parking along the side and back of the location. Black Bear is a chain restaurant that delivers pretty consistent decent food. I have dined at about two dozen different Black Bear Diners in California, Nevada, Arizona, and Oregon. The food is always good with fair portions for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Having dined in the Redding Location too many times to count, I have always found their food to be very good, service good to excellent, and price to be fair. On this visit, we were in a hurry so we ordered food to go. I was disappointed that I ordered an omelet, they did not include the potatoes or toast with it. In addition, I paid extra for a fruit bowl and had to remind them to put that in the bag also. Once we got the food and went on our way, we found the omelet to lack cheese to keep it together, the country potatoes were good, and the fruit was very good. This meal was a huge contrast to the recent visit to the Black Bear in Yreka, where the staff there is on the ball and goes the extra mile to make sure everything is top-notch. Did the Redding Location have an off day? I think so, I will definitely give them another chance in the future. Ordered a pick up on the way into town. Was very disappointed. The ribs were cold and had to be warmed up in the microwave. And still not good. Not good quality of meat. The cranberry sauce for the turkey was gelatin and had to be cut with a knife. The chicken strips were good but dry because they didn't give us the sauce! We had a great meal and great service. Morgan took care of us and was very attentive. I was planning on leaving a review as we went to a more expensive restaurant the prior night and had terrible food. Morgan and another male waiter seemed like the only ones serving and were running around working so hard. The atmosphere was amazing to see them in their flow. Shortly after we left a customer that was sitting next to us drove by and flagged us down and let us know my dad left his wallet. My friend and I went for a quick lunch. They were busy, and that is a welcome sight for sure. We ordered our lunch and our drinks arrived. While sitting and waiting, I watched plates of food being served up in the window. I saw two plates up, and the server said something to the assistant manager. He then took his bare hand and took the fries off one plate, and put them on another plate. The plates were then taken out to the guests waiting. I said something to the server, and she said it didn't matter they don't use gloves anyhow back there. I was just shocked as I had just seen him touch his sunglasses that were on his head.
