Dried and burnt fish.
Janene S.

Went there for the all you can eat fish fry. Waited 30 mins for the food and then you only got one piece at a time after that. Fish was burnt and dry... Never again! Service was ok and waitress was sweet but food took forever and was awful!

Pancake Stack - 2 Cakes and Bacon

Date of visit 10/4. Service was alright, the restaurant was clean and my breakfast was decent. Nothing special about what I ordered, just a simple pancake breakfast with an egg and bacon. Can't say that I'd make plans to return though, not for breakfast anyway.

Got great service from Patric. She checked on me periodically and kept my drink filled. The food was amazing. I got the pick 3, and I had 2 eggs, 2 pancakes and 2 pieces of flat Italian sausage patties. The sausage was so good (it did cost $2 extra, but worth every penny). Large servings. The atmosphere was casual. There were lots of bear photos and murals in the restaurant and even and bear toys in the lobby near the cash register. Reminded me of Colorado.

We love the sweet corn pancakes on this place as well as the red potato. The service is good and fast. The place is busy but well managed. Every time we come here it's always good.

Joe's Hobo Omelette

Breakfast at Black Bear Diner was a true comfort‑food experience. The pancakes and blueberry pancakes were fluffy and full of flavor, and the French toast had that perfect golden crisp on the outside with a soft, custardy center. The creamy grits were smooth and rich, and both Joe's Hobo Omelette and the Scrambled Egg Bowl were hearty, well‑seasoned, and clearly made to order. The cozy, cabin‑like atmosphere adds to the charm, making it feel like a relaxed morning getaway. Service was excellent--friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. A great spot for a satisfying, homestyle breakfast.

Chicken Fried Steak Omelette

this place is so good! The staff is super friendly and helpful. The food is amazing and a generous sized portion. The hot sauce was so good that I bought a bottle. The portions are very generous. I legit had 4 breakfasts off what I ordered. Highly recommend the chicken fried steak omelette! Great for all demographics and a nice, casual vibe.

Came here today for the second time but brought my husband along. We both ordered steak & eggs and the menu wasn't as crazy big as normal (today is Xmas) we ordered a mimosa which was good & then we both ordered steak and eggs. My husbands came out first and they apologized to us and told us they messed up and gave my plate to another table. It took a while for them to bring it out and honestly wasn't impressed for at 23 dollar plate. Our server Kim was the sweetest and apologized and we told her no need it wasn't her fault we heard what went on since their kitchen area is semi open. Kim was a great server !! At the end it was nice she ended up hooking us up and made the experience way better. Ask for Kim if you are dining in , she is a sweetheart!

Hit and miss. My shake was really good. You could tell it was real ice cream blended to make a shake. The burger was cooked exactly the way I asked, the bacon was cooked perfectly as well and the fries were seasoned well. My friend got the fish and chips and was not pleased but coming from a Wisconsin native there is a lot to live up to in fried fish. She did get the banana cream pie to go. The service was prompt and attentive. The place was clean but did have a smell. I would recommend eating here.

Black Bear is one of my favorite breakfast places in the Spring area. This was my first time visiting this specific location and I enjoyed it more than the location in Shenandoah. This one is a little smaller, but the environment feels cozier. I really appreciate all the effort that went into creating the theme of this restaurant. We came in a little later on Saturday morning and were seated right away. That's usually a little bit of a red flag during a restaurant's busiest time, but we had no issues with our visit! First of all, our waitress was phenomenal. She was busy, but never missed a beat. She was so nice! I didn't catch her name, but the server name on our receipt was Patricka, so I hope that's right! If so, I highly recommend requesting to sit in her section. One of the things I love most about Black Bear is that they don't skimp on the iced coffee. Most places you go for breakfast, you get unlimited refills on hot black coffee, but if you order iced coffee you're out of luck. It's usually served in pretty small glass. Black Bear makes your iced coffees in a glass big enough that you won't miss not getting refills. I had the cinnamon vanilla cold brew from their seasonal menu and it was really good. I also really like their sweet cream waffle. They even make it with a bear claw imprinted on the center. I've never eaten dinner here, but breakfast is always good.

Thankfully, Mark was there and initially was told a 35 minute wait but seemed intent by quicker. Ambiance: 4/5 It was breakfast time so of course it was a busy time. For my visit, it was crowded but not to where you couldn't hear your table. Dress is casual, good for friends, solo, or pit stop. Service: 5/5 Our waitress was very knowledgeable and friendly. Since it was our first visit there, she gave us some background that it was a Pappa's owned restaurant and food is made from scratch. Food: 3/5 They offer mimosas and I was tempted to order, but was driving and it was 9AM so forewent that option. There are food options for every tastebud. Mark ordered the fried cheese sticks, they were one of the items that I found worthwhile to return for. I opted for the Waffle feast. It included a waffle, that I added pecans on top to, two strips of bacon, eggs your way and hash browns. To say that I needed to add salt and pepper to the eggs and hash browns because they tasted bland and flavorless was unfortunate. It also was served at room temperature, because it was made from scratch, would think it be warmer to hot. The waffle was savory and had good mix and topped with the pecans made it even better. If you're on this side of town and want a change up from the "other breakfast diners" DOT would be where I stop. Fast, friendly service. Depending the food you get, it gets the job done for some sustenance to hold you over when you're not sure when your next meal is because you'll be in Galveston for 7 hours riding a float in the Mardi Gras parade.

I'll admit that when we got there, it doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside is a different feel. We were greeted and told we could sit where we like. We picked a table and a menu was promptly brought over with a warm welcome. I ordered the strawberry lemonade and the taco salad with beef. All very good! What I eventually found both surprised and delighted me, and Nate's gets a thumbs up overall. Pictures are deceiving as I thought the place would be larger but it's a tight fit for bigger groups. There are only a handful of tables but plenty of character. It's also a bit grimey, unsightly and even a tinge dodgey, which may be a deal breaker for others but is an immediate appeal to me. Two things immediately standout when it comes to the food: the portions and the prices are outstanding. The offerings are as no frills as the rest of the establishment. The other surprise was how much influence there was from Mexican cuisine. Hash browns were the goal, but chorizo and chilaquiles were the bonus. Another surprise? The hash browns weren't as crispy as I would have wanted. It's entirely plausible that I came on an off day, which happens. However everything else was on point as my chorizo skillet was absolutely dynamite, pancakes were fluffy and indulgent, breakfast tacos were outstanding, and my eggs were perfectly softly scrambled. Even the bacon and sausage patties were delicious, which is a tall order considering it's not likely made in house. Lastly, as someone who drinks cold water like it's a hobby (#1), I'm especially grateful for the massive 32 oz cup of water, which is perfect for someone who drinks like a camel. The staff is not the quickest but they are friendly. Spanish may go further with most and they're not the quickest when it comes to greeting folks or cleaning tables. The food is the star and consider paying in cash. ____________ (#1) I'm thirsty.

I wanted to start with one biscuit, but the biscuits come in pairs. The waitress said I could order just one anyway, but the order ended up being two. I meant to save the second one for breakfast, but that was not to be. It did not survive long enough to make it out the door. My actual meal was a bacon swiss and mushroom burger, which was excellent. Between the biscuits and the burger, I am forced to acknowledge that it was entirely too much food. Sadly, that did not prevent me from eating all of it anyway. Delicious! The restaurant, which is a diner with very basic decor, is on an approach road to IAH, and is open 24/7. When I arrived in the evening, the place was empty. By the time I left, there were a whole bunch of customers. I noticed in other reviews that people were saying they did not receive checks for their meal and felt they were over-charged at the register. I did not receive a check either, but the amount I was charged at the register seemed accurate -- and I was paying attention because I had read the other reviews first.

It wasn't one of those "oh I have to be nice to these guests because I'm getting paid" type people, you could really tell his niceness was genuine. I felt like I was at a fine dining restaurant. Our server was also very nice, and super helpful as I asked for a wine suggestion and she hit the nail with her suggestion. She brought a small sample for me to try before serving it. The food itself was delicious! We got the onion rings appetizer, and you could tell they were made to order. They were super fresh and also crispy. The chicken parmigiana was good, and they were not stingy with their portions at all. The picture I took doesn't do the dish justice. We shared a bowl of the potato soup where we had no expectations and I thought it tasted pretty decent. But the real test was the entrees. Mr. Picky ordered the Fettuccine Alfredo with shrimp while I opted for Veal Parmigiana, and we each stole a bite from the other's plate. We reached consensus immediately that both dishes were well-seasoned and quite delicious, meaning we would return for more good food in the future. Seriously, we hadn't expected much when walking in and looking around, but were pleasantly surprised at the kitchen's efforts. We finished lunch with an order of homemade bread pudding and tiramisu, the latter of which in 2012 won a chamber of commerce epicurean competition 1st place ribbon. I wasn't there to judge that competition and have had better, but sincerely appreciated the moistness of the bread pudding. While the majority of diners were older and a more mature crowd, there's a lot to be said for value, and we thought the menu price was better than reasonable and I think a lot of people will discover this as a value destination, something we all appreciate.
