Last time I had Black Bear I was in Colorado Springs. I was surprised they opened up a location in Illinois. The waitress we had was an absolute Angel, she was attentive and we didn't have to flag her down because she always made sure to give us refills, napkins, straws without asking. I think great service made the experience a good one. We ordered the Bear breakfast combo and picked two scrambled eggs, steak and cinnamon roll French toast. My husband got coffee and water and I got the freshly squeezed orange juice and water. The eggs were overdone and cold and the steak was a bit hard. They had a trio of bear sauces and my favorite was the chipotle bear sauce. The experience was great but I think the things I mentioned can improve. read more

Claire works with a smile and a kind spirit! When we were greeted, she met us with warmth and attentiveness. The food was as delicious as it was presented. I ordered a blueberry bear claw and Claire offered to serve it with ice cream, which was the perfect touch. My boyfriend ordered the cinnamon roll french toast; hopefully the videos will show just how much we loved it. Finally, the atmosphere was delightful. Very sad to be writing this. Have eaten at Black Bear Diner in Shasta for decades, yes the original number 1. Leaving that aside my server was TERRIBLE... the others seemed good but mine was TERRIBLE. This is coming from someone who works for a living and has many friends who are servers. She was HORRIBLE. Can't remember last time I ever wrote a review let alone a bad one. Food ? Eh, asked for burger medium it was well well well done, fries, cold stale. Did I get a single refill of water, even once ? No. The small side of ranch ? No. Ordered, water and food dropped off, never saw her again. Place was slow, not slammed and not empty to where there would be no need to check. This is the third time I've tried this place and I will never go back again. Check out the other reviews the customer service is horrible The Waitresses are so slow and they disappear and never come back and you end up just waiting and waiting and waiting. I Ordered a cheese burger basket and a Ruben . Greasy Ruben and a no flavor burger. Service was horrible, 20 minutes to get order . Waitress came twice said she would bring me another water never did . Had ordered a milkshake with burger never came . Had them take it off at the front desk never said how was your meal , god forbid they apologize for forgetting it . Nothing ! Find another place this place sucks ! This may look like a duplicate review, but the black bear diner seems to have two separate Yelp slots. I had to go five stars on this one! I've been to quite a few black bear diners. I've only had one Black Bear diner that was absolutely horrible, and that was by my house in the town over of fernley. But this one swung it out of the park! I walked in the door, and I was immediately greeted by two very nice younger women, and I vowed to sit at the counter which was open seating. My server I think was Skylar. She was super quick to greet me and asked me what I wanted to drink right when I sat down, and she was super attentive to me for my entire visit. All the employees were hustlin!! I ordered the cream of tortilla soup, chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and corn on the cob. Everything came out super quick, and super hot! And if you know about black bear diner, you already know about the portion sizes!! I was able to even sneak a picture of the cooks in action and the back room! Your typical Black bear decorum, log cabin style and wooden furniture. Overall, perfect visit! Tried this place twice. First time was during breakfast. For a table of two, it took close to 45 min to get our food and the pancakes were overcooked. The 2nd time we tried dinner. The section we were in only had 3 tables of people. We sat there close to 15 min without any acknowledgment of service. We ended up leaving. read more

The best experience! I would give 20 stars if I could. We have been to Black Bear Diners around the country and were passing through and so excited to see this off the freeway. We were welcomed and seated immediately by a very kind host and greeted by our server promptly as well. Coffee was fresh and food came out pretty quickly. The service was not good and the food was even worse. Ordered bottomless coffee to not get refills. It took so long to get food but thought if it's good it would be worth it. It was not worth the wait. I do say that my husband and I eat do eat a healthier diet which does not include seed oils or fake food. There was a terrible aftertaste to the potatoes, my husband ordered over medium eggs which came looking like sunny side up just cooked longer and a little burnt on the bottom. I love this place. This was the second time I've been here. Today I had lunch by myself. My server was Jody, she was very nice and accommodating. The decor is nice, and while there were a few other diners close by, it was not overly loud. Music was a good selection, and also not too loud. Will definitely be back. I had the Cobb Salad. Delicious. I also got the cheescake to go. I had a special request for the cheesecake topping and while it took a few minutes to get an answer, they were able to fulfill my request. I have given this place several tries. I really WANT to love it, but I don't. The work they put into decorating, is wasted on the effort spent getting good servers. This last time, is my last time. I'm done. The time before this, we had a server that had us there for over an hour and a half. ( for pancakes, and eggs) We never got refills. We were literally drinking one glass of water using three straws. My order was wrong, and I couldn't even find her to let her know. This last time, I got the wrong dressing, my grandsons pancakes were wrong, no refills, and again we were there waiting forever for our food. We ordered pancakes and a BLT! How long should that take? There was literally 5 tables of people in there! It wasn't even busy! My husband told the cashier that he wasn't too happy with our service, and the only response was- oh. Sorry. True to the Black Bear Diner brand, the food is excellent, the atmosphere friendly, and the prices fair relative to portion size. The new Morris IL location lives up to the reputation. This is the second time we've been to this location. I want to love it like the ones out west, but this location is a miss. The first time was New Year's Day they were severely short staffed. We waited over 2 hours but they did make us aware they were a chef down and it would be a while. The fried chicken was overcooked to the point you couldn't get the chicken off the bone. The meatloaf and soups were perfection. Today, we ordered the meatloaf and the turkey. Meatloaf was great but the turkey literally had TABLESPOONS of lemon pepper or some other strong seasoning. I scrapped it off and made a pile to show the waitress. There was enough to make a pile on my plate. I didn't say anything while we are eating as I don't want a replacement with spit in it. The wait staff saves this place. Both times had lovely servers. I told my husband we'd try one more time. It's just VERY DIFFERENT to the WA and CA locations. read more

OK road food. Something better than another McDonalds. Wait staff is efficient and friendly, kitchen slow. Waited over 25 minutes for bacon and eggs. Food quality was good. The biggest drawback was the really loud music. Plus it was a really poor choice of music more appropriate for a teen concert than a restaurant. This is a new restaurant in the area having recently opened. I assume there will be difficulties for a while. I hope they're successful, but please eliminate the music. I am rating my review regarding our Thanksgiving dinner at the restaurant which was not as expected. First of all, the overall offerings of the menu was fair, however, everyone in our party thought that $30.00 for the holiday turkey, ham, etc. was just a little bit overpriced. I ordered the steak which was very tasty however became very hard as it got colder. Green beans, mashed potatoes, were average. For the holiday price we probably will not be back, however, we will be back for other visits because we do like the other foods.
