It's hard to rate this with stars. Most servers are very polite and the food was pretty good for this type of restaurant. We've eaten there several times but one time with this one server we watched him bring our drinks to the table handing our drinks to us holding the glasses by the top rim with all 5 finger by the top of the glass. Returning to this restaurant after that, we asked for a different waiter. Come to find out, the waiter we were avoiding was the manager. Beware of the guy in the RED SHIRT. Another visit to the Black Bear Diner, this time to the Manteca location. Again, promptly seated and my order was taken quickly. Ordered Bruce's Meat Lovers omelette. The food arrived very fast... in five minutes if that. The omelette was tasty and very filling.My only complaint, if any was that the bottom of the hash browns were a bit over cooked, not too much, but the low grade food service fork lost the battle in the cutting arena. The fork needed assistance from the knife. Overall, food, service, and ambiance of the Diner is excellent. Black Bear Diner continues its winning streak with this Yelper. read more

I rated this 4 star with the fact this is a diner in mind... so the food is diner food and for that it was pretty good. The server was good and tentative by getting us everything we needed and checking in appropriately. The location is cute with all of the bear decor, we also like to go here because our 2 year old loves to see all the bears and gets excited every time- also because my husband love their hot sauce... so whenever we run out we go back for breakfast. read more

Meh. Not the biggest fan. It was my first time trying black Bear diner ... like ever! I was hoping I picked the right location but I was a little disappointed. I got the blackened salmon with veggies and mashed potatoes. My salmon was so dry and overcooked. It wasn't even really "blackened" it just had Cajun spices placed on top after the salmon was already cooked. I did enjoy the gravy my friend got so maybe I just need to order something else, like from the breakfast menu. We had a large dinner for 17 people and the service from Felipe was excellent. Sure we had one hiccup, but that happens. Otherwise dinner was cook perfect, we weren't abandoned it was quite the opposite...yay!! I ordered the Salmon lightly seasoned..mmm perfect tender juicy fish. It is hard to pull into the main entrance when the drive thru coffee place sharing the entrance is busy! We arrived around 4:30pm. Hardly anyone was there. I don't know why but there were two tables near where we were seated that needed to be cleared. Leftover food on plates and drinks left on table. None of the workers were interested to clear it. Maybe they were waiting the table clearers to start their shift? It was just an eyesore since it was next to us. The club sandwiches and salad we ordered were tasty. Our waitress was okay. Had an amazing vegetable beef soup! Our server Jesus mentioned it's a rare occasion they have this soup and I really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, this was not a good experience. Ordered a coffee and my waitress never brought the vanilla creamer i had asked for. After almost 10 minutes, I had to get up and get it from another table. Then when I finally got my food, there was a hair in it, so I sent it back. After another 10 minutes I requested that they cancel my order altogether, as we were having to leave. The manager then came over trying to convince me to keep the order and allow them to remake it, although unfortunately there was no time. Majority of the time I was looking around for our waitress, she never once checked in on us, until after I returned my food. My son never got a refill on his drink until I had to flag down another waitress to ask. My son moved out right before Covid. We recently decided to do Sunday breakfast once a month, since we don't get to see each other much. This was our 2nd time eating in somewhere since the pandemic. I've taken long time to form an opinion of Black Bear Diner. Like 10 years. Yeah, I know. For a very long time, I was on the fence. This place has huge portions. The food is piled on, the biscuits are the size of soft balls. Pretty much all the deserts are insanely large. But the one thing the food was lacking was flavor. Every time I came in, I tried something new and in general, the food was always bland or unseasoned. I was really disappointed. It was a shame that a place that gives you so much food could just fall short in the taste department. Despite, this the food was never horrible, I was just disappointed, so I stuck with it and kept coming. I couldn't tell if there was a problem with the recipes or just execution and as if by some unfortunate coincidence, my food just happens to be prepared by the cook who doesn't care too much. I've found that over the years that there are some things on the menu that actually grabbed my attention. The reuben was one of the first items I tried that actually had a great taste. Just recently, I visited and had the New York Steak and Eggs and it it tasted wonderful. The biscuits could still use some work. It really sad considering they're the biggest biscuits I've ever seen. I find that the gravy does most of the heavy lifting. The staff here, however, has always been great. They're always helpful and very friendly. The last time I came, I waited a little long to be greeted, but my server fixed that right away. She took my order and I had my food very quickly. She stayed on top of my coffee refills, which is a long taken for granted skill I think. In general, it's not a bad place. It'll surely fill you up. There are some great things like the bear claw and the New York Steak. I'm still checking out the rest of the menu to find more of these good dishes. read more

I'm a big fan of black bear, I've been going for years, I've even eaten at the first one in Mt. Shasta a bunch of times, but it seems like the more restaurants they add the worse they get, that said this location is the worst I've EVER HAD. We had quite good experience with Black Bear Diner in other place, so we decided to try out this one as well -- and this one turned out even better. The ambiance was very fun and inviting, the portions were generous, the food was really good. I enjoyed experimenting with their three versions of hot sauce -- "papa bear" was the best, well, maybe because I am a papa too. The service was excellent -- attentive and quick. I really like BBD. I've been to a few different restaurants of theirs. My go to is always the Chicken Fry Steak. On this occasion it was no different. However this time was a let down. The food was something that resembled or seemed like it had been sitting under a heat lamp. But the taste was worse. It was tangy, is the only word I have to describe it. There was something off. Great service at this Black Bear. The waitress had came to our table about 7 times within 30-40 minutes. The food was also pretty good. My only thing was the portion size. I came here on a Saturday at 12 noon. There was a wait but it wasnt long for a small party of 2. We only waited 15 minutes. The bigger parties have a longer wait. If this restaurant was short staffed we would never have known. The service was great and the food was good as well. The waiter was friendly and accommodating. My niece ordered the New York steak and eggs breakfast plate. Im actually surprised we didnt wait longer. We were so full we didnt take any pastries/ pies home. This restaurant is super-expensive, even after taking into account today's prices . . . and the food just "fills the gap". Lunch for two will run around $45-$50. The staff was pleasant and there was no wait. Unfortunately the food was barely acceptable. I considered sending my meal back, but I don't think any replacement would have been an improvement. There was so much salt in most everything that it dominated any true flavor. This is basically an expensive greasy-spoon type restaurant on an industrial scale. I wish we just went to McDonalds ... We go to Black Bear Diner frequently (kids want breakfast for dinner). I decided to get breakfast yesterday for the six of us. Six people! The main issues were with two orders. My dad got his staple Ham and Cheese Omelette with hash browns (which were cold and raw) and I decided to change mine up a bit and ordered a sweet cream waffle with Blackberries. I would say 30/45 mins after eating, both my father and I were having major stomach issues. Multiple trips to the bathroom. I'll stop there, you don't need to know the rest. I called Black Bear Diner just to inform them and the Manager said (rudely) that she finds it highly unlikely that we got food poisoning from them because food poisoning doesn't happen until after 12 hours. I wasn't in the mood to correct her, plus, she was gracious enough to give us two free meals but I'm a little iffy about that because she only asked for some personal information and didn't send me anything (email) to suggest I will get two free meals. I even suggested if I could have my daughter swing by to get a certificate. The Manager said (annoyed) "no that isn't needed". What if we order from them in a months time, how do I know that I will get my two free meals. Customer Service has been going downhill for the past few visits and I get that they are super busy with phone orders and dining at the restaurant, but things just don't seem to run as smoothly and the disrespect of the waiter literally pushed me aside while I was walking in yesterday was disturbing.
