We pass by Black Bear Diner all the time, and every time my toddler calls out that she sees bears! We've also heard this place was pretty solid, so decided to stop by for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. The restaurant is much bigger than I expected. Most of the tables in the main dining area are for smaller parties of 2-6, but there is a room toward the back that can accommodate larger groups. We waited about 30 minutes for a table of 10. Once seated, our server came by to take our drink and food orders. Service was decent overall. Our server had a pretty stern tone/didn't seem very happy, but she was helpful and made sure we had everything we needed. The portions are definitely generous for the price. I ordered the Build Your Own ($14.99) with scrambled eggs, sausage links, and biscuits with gravy. I was honestly floored when I saw two BIG biscuits on the plate! While the portion sizes and pricing were great, the food itself was just mediocre to me. Personally, I'd rather pay a little more for better quality food elsewhere, but if you're looking for a casual spot in the area, this isn't a terrible option. read more

Good food and great prices. Service can be a bit of a challenge at times, but they do the best they can with the staff available. When you want biscuits and gravy or a skirt steak, they have it all. The bear decor is also fun to look at while you're waiting. read more

I'd heard good things about Black Bear Diner so I decided to come in for lunch. When you first come in, it has a gift shoppy, log cabin vibe complete with store merch and chunky log cabin chairs. Deeper into the restaurant the seating is the standard booths and tables. We were promptly greeted and seated right away. The menus are like newspapers and it felt fun and whimsical to hold it like you're perusing the daily news. IYKYK. They have ALOT of choices! Part of me wanted either a classic biscuits & gravy or country fried steak, but I opted for a pot roast melt. It was quite delightful. The meat was super tender & flavorful. The sourdough toast had a Parmesan crust that was a nice touch. I wish the bread would've been toasted a little more, but I still enjoyed all the flavors together. Come in hungry as a bear to Black Bear diner! Portion sizes are absolutely MASSIVE and if you're not sharing a meal, you're definitely going to have leftovers to take home and eat later! I LOVE themed restaurants and this restaurant is very, very bear themed. Lots of black bear art, plushies, photos, woodwork, signs, etc all over the restaurant, outside, in the waiting area, at the counters, in the hallways, at the booths, in the restroom, etc. Our server was super friendly, funny, and welcoming the entire time. I got the: 1) Huckleberry Lemonade: -Pretty sweet and not tart at all and not too syrup-y either. -One refill only so make sure to use it! 2) Bigfoot Chicken Fried Steak: -Absolutely massive. -Comes with a side of salad and 2 sides. I got the onion rings and the Italian green beans with bacon to try to balance out some veggies with the amount of meat. Standard green beans and bacon. Slightly crunchy. Huge portion of onion rings, I couldn't even tell that it was a side. Real onions inside but not too soggy. -It's a 10 oz deep fried tender slab of beef smothered in country gravy. -Delicious savory dish, very nostalgic and warming meal. It is a tad dry, but nothing that the oceans of country gravy on top didn't help. I definitely had to bring this home as left overs. There's also lots of bear themed gifts and merch in the front and some baked goods for walk in and purchase (like pies). Great place to get huge amounts of food. We've been here before and the food was good. This off this visit The clam chowder was very good and I enjoyed it. On the Reuben sandwich the meat seemed to be old and didn't have much flavor. We ordered a taco salad with ground beef. They used a pulled apart hamburger patty. It didn't work. We also ordered a bowl of oatmeal. It was early evening. It's was like paste. It would have been nice for them to tell they were out of oatmeal. But they served oatmeal that should have not been served. The coffee was hot and we enjoyed it. Today, August 4 2026, I visited with my husband to enjoy a breakfast before work but as we were sat a male server immediately came and rushed us into ordering our drinks. He spoke rapidly and rudely when we took more than 30 seconds to order and we received attitude when asking for straws he had not given us. Once we had received our orders, my husband noticed in his eggs and potatoes this unusual neon blue-green substance. As well in his order there was an entire bottom piece of potato that was not cooked. Photos provided of both. We've came here before for breakfast and haven't received issues but today we were completely uncomfortable and unsatisfiedDue to these factors, we will not be coming back to this location and were highly disappointed with our service. read more

This place is great. Classic, reliable, nice cabin diner vibes. Lots of space and seating. I drive by on the weekends and it's always packed, lots of people waiting out front. We went on a Sunday night around 8pm and it wasn't very busy. It's a great spot to grab a meal after or during a hospital visit. Seems like one of the closest sit-down spots by St. Jude. Nice place to grab a meal with a loved one. Breakfast served all day! Huge portions. Pretty sure you can get different plates ordered in regular or large size. I feel like the regular size is plenty. It was super busy, matter of fact I can't think of when the last time it was I ever saw it not busy. Got the normal biscuits and gravy, with eggs and a side of pancakes. The portion control is on full attack when you eat here. There definitely will be some loved ones telling you to "leave it and save yourself, I'll eat the rest for you!" The ambience definitely still has that flashback feeling of a Marie calendars, Cocos or Spires from my younger years. Has a very Midwest feel to it. My friend and I swung by around 9 am on a Friday morning, and were attended by Cindy (or Cyndy). She is probably one of the sweetest and friendliest servers I've ever ran into and a principal reason for this review. She deserves all the recognition for our wonderful visit (as well as the breakfast that never misses and always comes out fulfilling). For those unfamiliar with Black Bear Diner, the restaurant is known for its old school diner-esque design and traditional American plates. This particular location has plenty of parking around since it's near a shopping plaza of some sort. This was my first time at this diner, and I can't believe I had been missing out! I came in for weekend brunch, and despite the usual rush, we only waited about 15 minutes before being seated. The interior was cozy, giving off a cabin feel. Our server was quick and super accommodating. The portions here are no joke and were flat out massive! It easily kept us full for the rest of the day. We ordered the grizzly plate, which lets you build your own platter with choices like bacon, canadian ham, sausage, hashbrowns, pancakes, eggs. Our second order was the NY steak plate which satisfied our cravings for steak and eggs in the morning. It came with biscuits (which were the biggest biscuits I've seen in my life) and they were warm and fluffy! On top of the amazing meal, the service really stood out. We got bottomless cold brew, and at the end of our meal, our server even offered us a fresh cold brew to go. Is the food rotten the service run when you can't even get a hamburger correct you medium well and it comes back raw and then they take it and they fry it and it comes back and it just gets worse, my husband who is wrong and disgusting. We ordered pick up for dinner tonight, we ordered the steak dinner with mashed potato's side of gravy, and corn on the cob and a side salad with thousand island haha don't make fun of me I like that dressing. Chicken tenders with fries and ranch and the fish fry we asked for a side of fries and onion rings but when he brought the food home the fries were missing. Little disappointing and the fish didn't have a lot of flavor or any dipping sauce. So we called which usually we wouldn't do but they did discount it for us thank you so much. I'm sure they were very busy for dinner but so sad to not have dipping sauce tarter or cocktail sauce but it's ok. We appreciate the kindness and discounting our meal. I enjoyed my steak dinner though I ate it all and baby girl shared my corn. The customer service was friendly over the phone thank you so much. Black Bear Diner is a good place to grab a meal any time, but we always go for breakfast. It is very popular and there is almost always a wait to be seated. We managed to grab two seats at the bar immediately with no wait which is a great option if you don't' feel like waiting for a regular table or booth. Service seems to go a little faster at the bar as well. Food and service is always good and this visit was no exception and the portions are good. We both had the Bears Choice breakfast which is a good value and gives you a basic breakfast with many options to choose from, including extra items for an additional charge. My bacon, eggs over easy, and pancakes were great.
