I haven't been to Black Angus Steakhouse in about 10 years because the quality had really gone downhill. My hairdresser recently told me she went and was shocked at how delicious everything was, so I decided to give it another try. One night when my husband and I couldn't decide on dinner, I suggested Black Angus and he hesitantly agreed. When we walked in, the hostess greeted us but wasn't very friendly. The ambiance has changed a lot from the old low-lighting, cozy date-night vibe to brighter lighting and a more standard restaurant feel. Not very romantic, but we've been married 17 years so that's not always a priority! Our server David was friendly, attentive, and made great menu suggestions. We ordered the Campfire Feast for two, which includes an appetizer, four sides, two main dishes, and a dessert. We chose the fried zucchini, Brussels sprouts, scalloped potatoes, green beans, rice pilaf, a New York strip and filet mignon, plus cheesecake for dessert. Every single thing was fantastic! I went in with low expectations and was blown away by how good the meal was. We also joined their rewards program, which is definitely worth it. We've already been back two more times and the food was just as good, so it wasn't a fluke! The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because the hostess experience has been consistently slow and unfriendly, even when the restaurant isn't very full. Upon arrival at the El Cajon location, we had to wait 10 minutes before any staff showed up. No apologies, just a "next" from the cold hostess. Then she attempted to put our party of four in the sports bar, but we'd had that experience before, noisy, poor service and cramped tables. "No thanks" I said, and requested a booth in the main dining area. She said she would have to check. Another 10 minutes went by, and when she finally returned, she again told us we had to eat in the sports bar. I asked why, and was told that there was a party of ten in the main dining area, and I could not expect good service if we were seated there. WTF? We left and went to the Texas Road House across the street, where we sat where we wanted and go excellent service from a waitress who clearly could handle 20 people at a time. We will NEVER eat at the El Cajon Black Angus again. read more

I first started going to Black Angus in the 90's.  They had the best baked potato soup I had ever had.  I loved the mix of flavors from the bacon, potatoes and cream.  This visit I ordered 2 baked potato soups with no sour cream and cheese.  I noticed the recipe has changed.  Back in the old days the thickness of the soup was soup like.  Now it's more like pudding.  The flavor was not as good either.  My second bowl of soup the flavor was terrible.  Tasted a sour flavor like they snuck in the sour cream. The bread was another favorite of mine.  It had fresh baked aroma and full of flavor.  The bread looks the same but I didn't detect the fresh baked aroma.  Instead I had the feeling it was blasted in the microwave to warm it.  Flavor seemed milder than the old days. Waitress recommended I try the limited time only specials.  The photo of the grilled lamb chops was tempting.  I ordered it and the reality was quite different from the photo.  The photo showed 3 big lamb chops filling half the plate.  The lamb chops were only the bone portion.  When I get a chop I hold onto the bone part to eat the meat part.  Using my hands I still found it difficult to eat the meat around the bone.  The meat surrounding the bone was tender and juicy.  I loved the flavor of the lamb and seasoning but there was not a ton of meat on this dish. Service was friendly and efficient.  I don't know about visiting again.  My soup order was either messed up or they now sometimes make it with a nasty sour flavor.  Black Angus was once great but now it's more just ok. read more

I wanted to take my husband out to a nice steak dinner for his birthday, so we went to Black Angus. We arrived at 5:15pm and we were seating immediately in a very comfortable booth. Right away, I could see how dated this restaurant still is. Even though they have definitely tried to spruce it up with new paint and some new decorations, they have alot of staining on the ceiling tiles and rips on the booth seating. At first our server was very friendly and got our drinks quickly but he was disappointing overall. We decided to get the campfire feast for 2 for $69, which we thought was a pretty good deal. We ordered the crab cakes for our appetizer, I ordered a 12 oz new york strip with mushrooms on top and with au gratin potatoes and garden salad as the sides, my husband ordered a 12 oz ribeye(which was a $7 add on charge) with onions on top, au gratin potatoes and Mac & cheese as the sides. Our server informed us that the crab cake appetizer would take a little longer than the other appetizers, we decided to still get them and wait for them. While we waited, the server brought over a small loaf of their molasses bread with butter, the bread was very tasty even though some of the edges were hard. Our crab cakes finally came out about 15-20 minutes later and they were worth the wait, they were so flavorful. We noticed it was taking a while for our entrees to come out, some of the tables around us got their food before us and they arrived after us. Our server came by to let us know that the entrees were taking longer than mormal and asked if we wanted to order a salad or soup to eat while we wait. By the time our food finally arrived to the table, we had been at the restaurant over an hour. The food arrived at the table but I informed the food runner that I never got my garden salad(which I assume was supposed to come out with the appetizer a while ago). They then brought out my salad accompanied with a extremely cold fork that was too cold to use, I ended up just using my other fork. The server did come by and apologize for forgetting to bring out my salad earlier. Our steaks were both delicious and very good quality. My husband let me know that the au gratin potatoes and Mac & cheese tasted the exact same, like they used the same cheese sauce for both of them. The au gratin potatoes were strange because the pieces of the potatoes were so small rather than the typical slices of potatoes but was pretty good. My garden salad was a large salad but a pretty basic salad. My husband got a free cookie dessert with some ice cream on top free for his birthday, the server came out with a candle in the cookie and we sang happy birthday to my husband. Our campfire feast came with a dessert, so we got a creme brulee. The creme brulee was pretty tasty. Overall, the food was delicious but the service was mediocre at best. Our server was not staying on top of our drink refills and it seemed like the delay in our food was due to him forgetting to put in our order. While we were waiting over an hour for our entrees, we did not see our server at all. I noticed a manager saw us waiting but they never once came by to check on us or offer a discount at all. I'm not sure if we would ever come back to dine in at Black angus again. The service was disappointing. read more

I got a great deal through email for club members. 6 oz sirloin, 4 fried shrimp, 1 lobster tail and 2 sides for 20.99. I couldn't resist. I got delivery and the food came Fast. I ordered at 7:21 and dinner arrived at 7:48. My steak was cooked perfectly. The lobster tail was generous and I got au gratin potatoes and mac n cheese. Everything was super delicious. There was no melted butter for the lobster tail. I could have used more cocktail sauce, the container wasn't even half full. And some napkins and utensils would be nice. I have been to Black Angus in the past, but I thought it should be time I'd write up a review. I did get a pretty good groupon deal, It was for the campfire feast for two. The last location I visited was on Friars road. So we had to choose 2 entrees', 1 starter, 4 sides and one dessert. 1.Starter- baked spinach and artichoke dip - we had to wait for this to come out, it came out piping hot, chips fresh. It is not a huge portion but it was pretty good. The crispy parm topping was the best part. Would I pay for this normal price? Probably not. 3.5/5 2. We shared prime rib and ribeye. Ribeye- cooked fairly well, (medium rare), seasoned pretty well. This would have been better if the side cap was on the ribeye. Ribeyes should have that sidecap and this one did not. Knocking it down a point for that. That is what makes it a Ribeye. 4/5 Prime Rib- This came out beautifully! cooked perfectly, the slice was legit. Unfortunately I ended up eating this cold and I still thought it was delicious. This is how prime rib should always be at these steakhouses. 5/5 Sides: French fries- seasoned well, crispy Baked potato- Seemed fresh, yes, old potatoes are never good. Potatoes Au gratin- Pretty tasty, a tad salty, pretty small portion 3.7/5 Dessert:Creme Brulee' We got this to go, but we had a bite or two then ended up finishing it. It was a standard dessert, but still tasty. I thought the portion was leaning towards a smaller size. I thought the top could have been browned more. 4/5 The server was extremely attentive and talkative. I do not love constant chattering especially when I'm eating but I will say I never needed to ask for another refill or anything. 5/5 for service I don't' frequent BA much, but I was surprised to see their menu now.
