I personally like that the store has a sort of corner shop vibe although it's not exactly small. The store is airways well lit and aisles are clearly labeled, and again the staff here have been exceptionally helpful. The news BBQ section in the back atrium is impressive even if I'm not the biggest cook in the family. And I also saw a custom shirt section although by the looks of it, I may be able to customise more than t-shirts. I hope they keep improving and stay open for a long time.

While the clerk was not familiar with the exact product I was looking for, Glisten Washing Machine cleaner, he did accompany me to the isle where he said it should be if they carried it. We both searched and didn't see it. He stopped another clerk and asked him if he was familiar with the product. He was not. I showed them both a photo of the product and neither of them recognized it as a product they offered for sale. I commented that my earlier online search said they had it in stock, so I began one final scan down the aisle commenting that the orange package color should really stand out. Low and behold, it did! There was only one of the product left. I decided to push my luck. Another item that my web search told me was available and in stock at both Walmart and Robinson's was a Presta to Schrader valve stem adapter (Google it). Walmart didn't have it. The Ace staff took me to another individual who was able to look it up on their computer and tell me that they could order it and I'd have it on Monday. I'm writing this on Sunday, if it doesn't arrive on Monday I'll be back to update this review. I like the helpfulness of all the staff here and appreciate the extent they went to in order to please a customer. BTW, my final item that I was shopping for, Pro Products Res Care, I ordered from Amazon since no one locally carried it.

Sometimes even lower. That really doesn't matter though, because the helpful service I receive here more than makes up for a few extra pennies. The staff are super friendly and have helped me with lots of projects along the way. I needed a weird part that wasn't available anywhere else and they found it for me in their storeroom and gifted it to me. I needed a certain type of paint on a holiday-eve and they spent the extra time going through their stash to find a suitable product. When the entire northeast region is out of salt and they have a shipment coming in, they were willing to make arrangements so that some was waiting for me when I showed up that evening. And when I need advice (and honestly, it seems to be always) they are a lot more reliable and useful than trying to randomly search Youtube. It is the smaller hardware stores that provide what most do it yourselfers (read: amateurs) really need: attention. Because of that, I will keep coming back to here.

But this store caught my attention when I saw an ad for them on TV. They claimed that they have items not found in other stores. They also emphasized that they offer friendly and readily available service. Today, in search of a particular style cabinet knob, after nothing met my wife's satisfaction in Lowe's, Home Depot, and several other stores, we tried Chance's on our way through Latham. The first thing we noticed was a friendly greeting from an employee helping another customer in the parking lot. Walking through the store we saw everything very well organized and nicely displayed in a clean environment. Once we found what we were in search of, we met that same welcoming employee (owner?) from the parking lot on our way to the register. He was truly friendly and made the shopping experience a pleasure. The item we purchased could have been ordered for less from Lowe's, but it was not available today and we've never received such a sincere welcome in any big-box store. There is definitely truth in advertising from Chance's Hardware store.

Don't mistake these for long lasting tools, they will let you down eventually. The store has an awkward and busy parking lot. It's cramped inside and people can be gruff depending on the day. That being said there are some items I go specifically to HF for- Automotive Jacks- Nice and reasonable, my first one just needed a rebuild after nearly 8 years of pretty regular/hard use. Within an hour of getting it home, we found a large, rusted dent on the floorboard, widespread scratches/cosmetic damage, a heavily rusted blade, and grass/dirt buildup inside the deck housing. When we called the store that night, we were basically told this was "normal." The next day, a manager told us the mower "looked 2 years old." During later conversations with corporate customer care, we were then told the mower was an older model that had apparently been sitting outside for "a few years." Despite that, it was displayed and sold alongside actual new models at full price. The mower was eventually replaced and we received partial compensation after an absurd amount of back and forth, but the explanations the entire way through were inconsistent, communication was terrible, and nobody could give a straight answer as to how a mower in that condition could appropriately be sold as new. Sharing this so others know to thoroughly inspect expensive equipment before leaving the store, and perhaps take their business somewhere other than Lowe's.

Some things haven't changed... their staff is still extremely friendly and knowledgeable, their prices are about the same as the big box stores, their selection is much less than big box stores (but usually that just means they carry only quality name-brand items and don't have cheaper junk stuff), and the hours are more in line with a mom and pop store. I needed some items and decided that I would try and get here on the way home from work before they closed at 6PM. I made it in time, they helped me select exactly what I needed, and I left happy. If you need 20+ items for a big construction project, lots of lumber, or various types of custom colored paint this might not be the right store. But, if you know you are up against a project you aren't familiar with and want to talk it over with someone before buying the right stuff this is a great place to come.

The large Greenhouses were stocked with blooming healthy annuals and perennials. It was a sea of beautiful floral colors. One of the three Greenhouses had vegetable plants and herbs.
