Have you ever seen a house painted yellow? Me neither! Despite the fact there are three yellow…read morehouses on my block. I've never seen the outside of a house painted yellow. Apparently, according to the Benjamin Moore dealer at Miller Paint and Decorating, no house has ever been painted yellow on the outside, because it will fade or require multiple coats so they can't even give me samples of any yellow color for an exterior job. Which is really weird, since the Benjamin Moore website seems to say the exact opposite, even has a color picker for my exterior color. And also because I got yellow colors from three other paint stores/suppliers, meant for exterior paint. But no, I'm probably wrong about this because the dude at the counter said he was darn sorry I just can't paint my house yellow with Benjamin Moore colors. Going to go to another Benjamin Moore dealer shortly to find out whether it's a franchised craziness or just individual lunkheadedness associated with this store, but I shan't bother coming back here, at least not until they invent the color yellow again.

I am obsessed with Benjamin Moore paint, it's beautiful and great quality. The historical collection will never fail, you will love how rich the colors look. I've always had an excellent customer experience here. Yes the paint is expensive but once I came in buying what must have been my 20th gallon on paint Bill started giving me the contractors discount making the price a little easier to swallow. They've also made helpful suggestions and given us advice as we've tackled different problems. You will love the paint and hopefully Bill will be as good to you as he's been to me.

You might as well call Sherwin-Williams "The Painting Store". The company is still in the…read moreheadquarters location it was in 1860 (in Cleveland) and S-W retains its retail paint store approach in the face of incursions of painting departments of the big box home improvement stores. It's not the only paint-only specialist left out there, but it's certainly the biggest and the company with the most experience, collectively. I can't attest to the relative quality of paints vs. competitors because you'd have to paint a lot of rooms and houses before doing that; but you can get almost any color at any paint outlet now with computerized mixing and color-matching. The prices here seem high but are competitive if you wait for the discount windows, particularly if you wait for the 30-40% off sales that don't occur at the big box stores. Large volume orders, you can negotiate a little discount. What distinguishes the S-W locations is that they know their painting. It's not that I haven't slapped a gazillion coats on various things over the years, I still need a little help with what's really necessary or how to use this that or the other, with painting projects coming at infrequent intervals, and it's absolutely clear they know their stuff much better than the random guy on the paint counter at Lowe's or Home Depot. This location is just off 7 on State, at the edge of the Woodlawn neighborhood, and the local staff knowledge includes experience with older houses and surfaces. I'll repost when my big project is over and let you know how it turned out, but "worth the side trip" adequately describes my experience thus far.

However the restaurant owners were on vacation leaving me with a 15 minute waiting time before Curtis lumber opened at 7am. Curtis lumber has been in existence for over 100 years and is headquartered in Ballston Spa near where I live. They have over 23 locations in upstate NY. They carriy a selection of plywood, treated lumber, dimension lumber, hardwood and engineered lumber. To make things simpler its just a lowes or home depot that is locally owned and smaller in size. Buy and shop local.

What a disgrace to call this a family run and family oriented business. It is nothing of the kind…read more Jay-K was a legit family run and oriented business. I understand the purpose of a business is to make a profit but to do so at the expense of the community and the employees is not. I would recommend Lincoln Davies, Ilion Lumber or many other of the small family owned and operated suppliers in the area every day over Curtis Lumber which is simply concerned with the dollars at the end of the day rather than the wellness of the community or the future of its staff. I have been very successful in my career and have had the opportunity to shop at many Curtis locations. I shopped at them only because they had bought up the local stores and in some cases shut them down and there simply was no alternative within a decent range. I just paid the price and went on with things. Almost always, the employees (salespeople and yard workers) were top notch but boy oh boy did I hear many complaints about the management. Both from said employees and other customers. It seemed like policies were designed to alienate and annoy the customers, the people who keep a store open. Yes they offer a military discount but to make it so that EVERY TIME I SHOP, I must go through a ten question interrogation, pull out ID's, ...spend an extra 5 minutes in line to do so and annoy anyone in line behind me (which actually there rarely is) to get a 10 percent discount which might just might bring the item(s) cost in line with the competitors prices seams ridiculous. Put me on file until I am dead and when my name pops up...give me the discount or simply do not offer it at all. Everything they do seems to annoy me as a customer. One time I was told an item was in stock and when I stopped in to pick up said item. I was told "in stock" meant that one of the Curtis locations had at least one of the item in inventory. That could have been Ballston Spa or even Vermont. I guess the management at Curtis does not consider that a lie and maybe technically it isn't but to mislead a customer in that way is just another example of hot to disenfranchise a customer. Please people take care of the businesses that take care of you. Curtis Lumber I assure you is NOT one of them.
