Our experience at Bistro La Source wasn't horrible, but the food just didn't taste right across the board. They brought out bread with butter to start. I'm not a fan of cold bread (seemed like it was refrigerated) but it didn't taste horrible. Wish it was served warm though - there's nothing better than warm bread to start off a meal! We ordered tuna tartare for the appetizer. Usually tuna tartare at other restaurants comes with avocado, but I did read the menu and saw they did not serve it wth avocado. No problem with that - still looked like it would be good. I tried it and it just didn't sit right with me. Maybe it was the sauce they used, but it was a struggle to eat it due to the taste. For the meal, I had the buttermilk chicken with mashed potatoes. I guess maybe this was just my ignorance of the dish, but it seemed like it came with a whole chicken, served on top of a couple scoops of mashed potatoes. I didn't know I'd have to carve around bones, etc. Not a huge deal, but I also wasn't a fan of the sauce. I did like the peas mixed in with the chicken - added some sweetness. For dessert, I ordered the strawberry/rhubarb crumble since I love rhubarb. We ordered then our waiter came back saying they didn't have vanilla ice cream. I ended up getting salted caramel instead. The crumble was amazing, but the salted caramel didn't taste right - and maybe it was due to the sweetness of the strawberry/rhubarb, but I had to take it off immediately (they served the ice cream on top of the crumble) so it wouldn't ruin the taste of the crumble. For the price we paid, the food was pretty disappointing. But with that said, it could've just been disappointing based on personal food preference - it still is a cute place to sit outside and eat! read more

Flawless service and incredible food. This was my first restaurant experience for the winter and it didn't disappiont. If you're looking for the epitome of a COVID-safe winter dining experience, Bistro is doing it right. The people complaining about the mandatory 30% gratuity at a time like this when restaurants are struggling to stay afloat need to grow up. Came here for restaurant week. Food was pretty good, but it was the service is what really put me off. I was slowly observing how we were being treated a bit differently that the two tables next to us who sat down well after us. They were greeted with a smile and a positive attitude. we were just given the menu and asked for a drink order while they had the specials explained to them. I didn't think much of it since I was just hungry. Our appetizers came no problem. We we're checked on by somewhere who wasn't our waitress. No issues without entrees either except some of the food was a bit dry. We finished our entrees and we're eagerly waiting for our waitress to come back with the dessert menu. It took a total of 40 minutes before we were able to track down our waitress for her to even hand us the menu. Even then she just placed the menus down and walked away. This whole time waiting I saw as the two tables next to us got their desserts and even ended up leaving well before us. Our waitress (Rachel) didn't even bat an eye our way to check up on us even after multiple attempts to get her attention. Fast forward to us ordering iur dessert. It took an additional 20 minutes for us to get our desserts which was honestly, very underwhelming. I thought it would redeem the whole experience but it honestly wasn't worth the wait. We finished up and we wanted to get our check. Of course, Rachel was no where to be found. We asked another waiter for our check and paid instead of spending another hour trying to deal with Rachel. So what started off as a pretty good night, turned out to be a terrible experience. We felt ignored and discrimited. Maybe if you're Caucasian, you'll have a better experience. Saturday night @715, dinner for 3 on Aug 7. This place had a terrible night and we suffered. I watched 4 tables leave early with out entrees. The manager couldn't handle all the complaints and the service was short staffed. The kitchen was way overloaded and our food took 75 minutes and was very mediocre. They kept seating tables despite the problems. The restaurant made no concession on the check. Reputation is good on this place but something has to change. Pre-covid, this restaurant was my husband and my go-to for a luxurious, fancy meal with an unpretentious, cozy, but beautiful ambiance. Truly, the wait staff is lovely and thoughtful, and the food is insanely delicious. Even now, deep in covid, their takeout is STELLAR. My friends mentioned they love mussel Tuesday at Bistro La Source. Living in the middle of Canada... good seafood is few and far between so I was desperate to try some delicious mussels. Everyone in my group was Scottish and the server was a really lovely Scottish lady too, who made some nice menu recommendations and made sure our drinks were always flowing. I ordered thew classic white wine and garlic mussels and we shared a side of mac n cheese and fries. I tried the curry mussels and the Thai version my friends ordered but I was all about the classic combo. Prices were reasonable and this place was popular. I enjoyed but wouldn't get the mac again. Question. Do you de-shell all your mussels first then eat it? Or do it one at a time as you eat? I de-shell them all first then start eating. Food for thought. read more

I really tried to like this place. No complaints about the service. Our waitress was very nice. The food, unfortunately, was just such a big disappointment and really expensive. We ordered the Cassoulet and the Lamb Shank. Cassoulet - From the menu, this supposedly consists of Berkshire pork, sausage & duck confit with white beans. I didn't find many pieces of pork and the few pieces were shredded and dry. The Cassoulet consisted mostly of white beans swimming in tomato sauce. It was too tomatey for my liking. It wasn't the worst food ever, but considering the expensive price it was a let down. Lamb Shank w/ Ratatouille and Couscous - The meat did fall off the bone, but overall really dry and bland. I couldn't get through half the shank. I did really like the ratatouille and couscous that came with it. The eggplant in the ratatouille was delicious and the couscous had a lot of flavor. If I could have ordered a plate of just the ratatouille and couscous, I would have. Maybe we ordered the wrong things, because I do see quite a lot of people there eating mussels. read more

This place is sooo good. I was nervous as hell as my bfs parents and my parents were meeting for first time ... YIKES! But 2 amazing bottles of red later - and prix fixes ($26) all around the meal was really good. Monday nights is unlimited MOULES for $10 - yes $10. They have free parking in the back, and a HUGE outdoor space come summer time this place will rock. I (actually my whole family ordered the same prix fixes us Y.'s run thick) ordered the caesar which was really good and the lamb shank and though pretty small was very good! Bistro la source I don't come here too often, but it's always there in the back of my mind. I like to come for Mussels Mondays when you can have all-you-can-eat mussels prepared up to 6 different ways for only $12 (the website still says $10, but it's $12 now). For a point of reference, one bowl costs $11 regularly. Aside from the mussels, I've also had other items from the menu, but I can't remember what at the moment. For the most part, the food has been good. Every now and then I'll think this dish was slightly amiss or this portion kind of small, but I'm usually pretty satisfied with my meal. In the past, I've also found the servers a bit inconsistent -- some servers are very sweet and welcoming, and some have been indifferent and absent. This time around, I went as part of Hudson Restaurant Week when they had a prixe fixe menu of 3 courses for only $26. I ordered the escargot, pan roasted salmon, and shared the creme caramel and apple crumb cake. Hands down the best meal and dining experience I've had here yet! The food was fantastic! Great flavors and portions, but not overly heavy or decadent. On top of the food, the service was excellent. It was pretty busy as you would expect a Saturday dinner crowd to be, but our server and the other employees were very friendly, helpful, and attentive. I've always found the restaurant itself to be quite charming. It's small, but a good amount of seating, which expands even more once the weather warms and they open up the outdoor seating. The ambiance is quiet and relaxed. They also have a small parking lot which is convenient when it's not busy, but difficult to come out of when it is. I usually try to find street parking if I can to avoid the quadruple k-turn. Hopefully this experience wasn't just a fluke for HRW because I was really impressed with how they turned it up a notch. It took me a while, but I finally made it back to Bistro la Source after a rouge mussel did me in on my last visit. Stopped in for a late brunch and was loving that is wasn't very crowded. I went with the fish sandwich, which was a little hard to eat (fell apart a bit on me) but tasty. I was less of a fan of the fries because I found them to be too greasy. Food-wise, I think I'd rather hit up a few other local spots before coming back here, but the service was pretty friendly and attentive, hence 3 stars. read more

I have been here twice now and both times were excellent. The service is great and attentive and we never felt rushed. The place gets packed on Mondays when they have their all you can eat mussels for $10, so I suggest making an Open Table reservation. First, we came on a quiet and cold Thursday night. We started with their fried calamari, which was excellent - the most tender calamari I have ever had. I tried one of their specials for the night - the blackened sea bass. It was perfect - just the right amount of food - and everything on the plate just went so well together. For dessert, I tried their warm apple crumble with cinnamon gelato and asked my server to suggest a dessert wine pairing. The server was very knowledgeable on the dessert pairings for my boyfriend and me. I believe the owner of the restaurant was the one who came over and helped us choose a Bordeaux at the beginning of our meal. My boyfriend tried the pris fixe menu and was very happy with his selections. Second, I came in on Monday (St. Paddy's Day) with a friend for the all you can eat $10 mussels. We got to try 4 different kinds, as we each ordered 2 different bowls. My favorites were the Thai and Mariniere. The Madras Curry was just okay to me, and the Provencale was my least favorite. The wine selection is very good, something for every price point. We had some room, even after all the refillable bread, so we shared a cheese board. I love everything that comes with it..sliced fruit, spiced toasted walnuts, toasted bread...very nice. Give this place a try..it has definitely made it into my rotation of go-to places. read more

Bistro La Source offers one of the best deals in Hudson County every Monday ... $10 all you can eat mussels. All you can eat deals are becoming a dime a dozen in this economy, and too often, the quality of the meal isn't worth the prix fixe attached to the gluttony. So naturally, I was a bit skeptical before venturing to this cozy, intimate spot right across the street from Paulus Hook Pizza, but like its neighbor, Bistro does A LOT right. And with some pretty delicious brews on tap (Chimay Red! Guiness, Flying Dog, etc.) and seven types of mussels to choose from, you are guaranteed to leave happy. Food: Went here for the first time Monday evening and it was strictly mussels. Between three of us, the table enjoyed all seven varieties to varying degrees. The Flemish (ale, shallots, parsley) was too bitter and bland, while the classic Mariniere (garlic, shallots, white wine, butter) was simply uninteresting, lacking any distinct flavor besides the ones imparted by the mussels. Conversely, Provencale (tomato, garlic, white wine, herbs) was teeming with white wine, too much and too cheap, overpowering the mussels and threatening to impair my judgment for the next round of bowls. Fortunately, each bowl (and every bowl we ordered) were saved by mussels that were succulent and tender, not quite on the level of fellow Paulus Hook mussel-maven Presto's, but not tough or chewy at all and certainly good enough for my hard-earned Alexander. The Thai (garlic, ginger, chilies, basil, coconut cream) should be better on paper than the Curry, and it's GOOD, but pales in comparison to its Curry (cilantro and cream) cousin, proving once again that simplicity in the kitchen wins out far more often than overseasoning. Also of note is the Diablo (tomato, garlic, red peppers) -- if you can handle it. The chefs really don't skimp on the red peppers here, and for good reason: If I'm ordering something called "Diablo" I want to feel like I'm dancing with him downstairs, a minor complaint about Presto's lack of zip in their "spicy" mussels. Bistro La Source does it right, and all of this without the admittedly sweat-inducing spice overwhelming the flavors of the tomatoes and mussels. I'm torn about the Normandy; you know what you're getting into before it arrives: mussels, plus bacon, PLUS cream? Skip the Chimay and wash this baby down with two Lipitor. Another word of caution: Like a good brick oven pizza, eat this one while it's hot. The cream eventually devolves into a greasy, cold soup that can't even be saved by those delicious mussels. Assuming you seek out Bistro on Mondays for their $10 deal, I'd get the Normandy early in the endeavor, and chill with something lighter afterward. Preferably something with a lot of garlic. In fact, ask the chefs to pour it on. It's good for your cholesterol after all :) All seven varieties are brimming with mussels -- Bistro doesn't skimp, or play any of those all-you-can-eat restaurant mind games ... what you see is really what you get. You won't be counting bowls (although I did; five), just all the money you saved on a delicious meal. The bread is also notable; light and fluffy, the perfect accompaniment to each variety. You can't order mussels and NOT lop up all the goodness they've been bathed in. Atmosphere: Bistro La Source is intimate but not cramped; perfect for a group on a recent Monday evening or a romantic Valentine's Day dinner with your sweetheart. The ambiance is cozy and warm, and I imagine even warmer in the spring and summer (I noticed outdoor seating). The dining room is candlelit and quaint; you get the feeling you are in a Parisian cafe by the water, and you are actually half-right. Service: Our waitress was great, answering any questions we had, imparting recommendations, and not biting her lip once as I singlehandedly killed five bowls of mussels as the clock approached closing. I would definitely go back to Bistro La Source -- and not just for their Monday Night Mussels. Their menu is diverse enough (classics; lamb chops ($19) and filet mignon ($28, by far, the most expensive item on the menu), dressed up stalwarts; the increasingly commonplace haute burger ($10) and butter-milk fried chicken ($16), and unusual twists; handmade pumpkin ravioli ($15) to warrant repeat visits. We've been to Bistro La Source and know what they are capable of but it will be a while before we return. We fully understand the hardships of employee retention in the hospitality industry at this trying time and applaud all the hard working staff and their stress levels during covid. Nonetheless, we were saddened to see the decline in Bistro La Source from the surly bartender who loudly threw bottles and glasses with such force because he was angry (he was throwing such a high volume tantrum that the patrons respectfully asked him to stop, all to no avail) and clear lack of management. The entire young, untrained, stressed and overwhelmed staff had zero leadership and all made it very clear they were seconds from walking off the job. It should be noted that this was the day before all covid restrictions were to be lifted, the patrons were trying to be in a gay and happy mood. We will return to Bistro La Source, maybe next winter or something. read more

I ordered dinner from here last night and this place was très disappointing. I got the cassoulet and saffron risotto. To start with the good, the meat in the cassoulet tasted good and flavorful. The bad part was that the beans it came with were so hard. The risotto was also a harder than one would expect. It was def missing that typical soft creamy risotto texture and so wasn't that enjoyable. I also ordered the almond cake with pistachio gelato. The gelato was decent but the almond cake was a bit dry. All in all, maybe I'd give the place another try but probably not. read more

This was actually our second time at this restaurant, as we had been here a few years ago with one set of our parents who like it. Tonight we had a small family reunion here--the atmosphere is very cute and charming. We ordered a bunch of appetizers to start, most of which were capital F Fine, but a couple weren't all they could have been. The warm goat cheese croquette was nicely done, but one croquette? Seriously? Sad! The calamari was whatever, and we liked the charcuterie board that came out. The mixed green salad was also good, but the squash blossoms were so overfried that all the delicacy of that ingredient was lost (also, where are you getting squash blossoms in the dead of March??). The mushroom barley risotto had great flavor, but a couple of the root vegetables in it were undercooked (i.e. the butternut squash). The rabbit tagliatelle that the two of us split as a main entree tasted like the sauce was made from raw butter and had a few tiny shreds of rabbit with some almost raw peas, and was by far the worst dish of the night. The almond cake that one of our moms ordered was laughably dry, and the pistachio gelato was the only thing that saved it. Service was good for most of the night, but our waitress also copped an unnecessary attitude at certain points (like when one of us suggested not putting openly-lit candles down at a table where there was a toddler grabbing at all the things). Bottom line: just OK. But if our parents want to get dinner in Jersey City again, we're going to put our foot down about suggesting another location. read more

Came here for a friend's birthday. Super cute atmosphere and there's even an outdoor section but unfortunately we weren't seated there since we were quite a large party. Don't think anyone in our party really enjoyed the food. I ordered the foie gras which could've been cooked longer or seared more. It was served lukewarm at best and the texture was mushy (probably undercooked). Pass on the side of ratatouille, which was just a medley of diced veggies drowned in a bland tomato sauce. We have been living in this area for 10+ years. From the very beginning, Bistro La Source has been our favorite spot to go to on Friday evenings. The food is outstandingly delicious and high quality. Some recommendations are: - Escargot (like in France :-) ) - Mussels - especially Thai style and 'a la Provençal' - Moroccan Lamb Sliders (flavorful spices) - Venison Tartare (my fav) - Fried Fresh Calamari (marvelous crispy batter!) Yes, this wonderful spot can be very crowded, especially outside when the weather is nice, and, yes, the service might be slower than in other US restaurants - but this is exactly why we love this French-style Bistro: there is no rush - you can just unwind, enjoy your company while drinking a glas of delicious wine, teasing your tastebuds & sitting outside in a wonderful environment. a very cozy spot downtown with a large outdoor eating area. food is a bit pricey (i.e. $12 Truffled Goat Cheese and Beets Salad: although the salad is good, they are stingy on the truffle oil and the salad overall is tiny.) The Calamari and Chorizo salad on Boston Lettuce is much bigger and very delicious. They use real spicy Chorizo, which is a plus. On to the second course: we got the Skirt Steak, The New York Strip Steak which was the special, and a tuna tartar. My friend really enjoyed her tuna, while the steaks were bland and rubbery. Service was a bit slow--I got the impression they were understaffed for the 15 or so tables outside (the outside was full). Waitress made a face when we asked for bread and butter, even though our food was taking a long time. They have 4-5 different sauces to choose from and I found the Thai to be the best, but also check out the diavolo if you're into spicy food. You also can't go wrong with the sangria. We were seated just opposite the far end of the bar from the entrance and that was a huge mistake as I will explain later. The service was mediocre as the waitress took a very long time to return after placing our beverage orders. We enjoyed some of the food, though my ravioli was completely under done, it felt like eating soft cardboard - I can understand 'al a dente', but the pasta certainly did not represent that terminology. The avocado salad was plain and way over priced. About our seating, we had to contend with a member of staff who was pouring out glasses of wine directly opposite our table and most of the bottles were emptying as she poured them, and she literally slammed them into the provided vesicle with some real brutal force - the bottles were literally being flung hard and clanging ever so noisily into the bin that we had to refrain from our conversation due to the deafening bangs, and what was even more surprising is that she was totally oblivious to the fact that her actions could be disturbing customers nearby. How she managed not to shatter the glass bottles is most surprising. Towards the end of the night, the staff congregated around the bar, and were talking extremely loudly to customers that obviously were regulars - naturally, we could not talk amongst ourselves due to their loud chatter. Truly, this is distasteful and extremely unprofessional on their part as I have never witnessed this mode of behaviour in any reputable restaurant. The final straw was the bill, we noticed they had added 20% gratuity, simply that is utterly rude, greedy and unacceptable, they are forcing customers into paying that percentage! We certainly will not be returning for sure. It is a shame as this restaurant could be outstanding only if they themselves took the effort to consciencely improve on their downfalls. read more

This is the classic place you would say....it was just "ok"...nothing to come back for. The 3 stars are for the wine and the mussels ...If I had to rate the appetizer I got, it would be zero ....the Tuna tartare was the worst I ever had in my life. Let's start by the fact that I said to the (lovely otherwise) waitress that I was severely allergic to gluten ...well...guess what...I was given a tuna tartar (ridiculously small...like ...put your eyeglasses on if you want to see it ....completely covered with bread . I was shocked ...like ...how stupid and inaccurate can you be for serving a tuna tartare full of bread (to cover the size of the tuna) to a gluten allergic person? So, I took out the bread ...tasted the tuna ...my god horrible It was supposed to come with soy sauce ginger mustard capers shallots ....it was a dry mix of onion and tuna ...no mustard, no soy sauce, no flavors, no nothing 16$!!! The size was like....my goodness...SMALL...Not even a leaf of lettuce to help...just dry BREAD I didn't say anything because I didn't want to bother the friend who was with me ...but this place ....just skip it if can go elsewhere ....I'm home after spending 70 $ there for an appetizer and mussels with wine ...because I'm starving ! We were standing at the entrance, close to the doors, for around 15 minutes with no communication as to when we would be seated. All the time, the waiter and an older gentleman (either the owner or Manager) kept walking past us without any update. There was another customer who was also in the same position as us - waiting. Finally, a lady (probably the owner) asked us if we would like to like to have a drink until we could be seated. Shocking amount of time before someone realized that making your customer wait without any information is not a good business strategy. I understand that the services industry have a staffing problem, but keeping your customer uninformed is unacceptable. All you need is a statement or two. The fact that we were waiting for eons (standing at the entrance) is very shoddy service. There was a 20% service charge pre-added to our bill - galling considering the level of service!! I need to make this clear though, the food on the other had was terrific. The way you service customers, however, needs a big upgrade. read more

The manager came and took the toasted bread I requested and touched from my table with the intent of giving it to another table!!! Reason: we re short of bread.... humm -At first I was ok with waiting, -I turned a blind eye on him taking customers orders of people showing up after me and my guest. -Third I didn't mind him touching the register and go grab bread from the bread basket with his unwashed hands. Absolutely love this restaurant! First discovered it back in 2009. The mussels are incredible, so many choices and so delicious. We often get the steak, which is really good! The shaved brussels you could also eat by the bucket load they're so tasty! They have a great wine list and are very safety conscious during Covid also! read more

Went back just for the foie gras and this time it hits the mark perfectly. The host suggested Sauternes to go with and and it's a perfect pairing. Generous serving of 2 portions of Hudson Valley foie gras and toast - need one more, though. Next time I will as for 2 pieces. Oh and the poached pear that came with it was the bomb. read more
