Came on a Sunday night around 5, but grabbed a seat at the bar first and ordered a few drinks because we were still waiting for one more person in our party. Bartenders were cool and drinks were good. Because it was a Sunday and it was pretty busy, we decided to get a table before the restaurant filled up. The waiter was super cool and did not rush us while we waited at our table. I got the braised short rib mafaldine and I gotta say it was one of the better pasta dishes I have eaten in a while. Very thick and flavorful sauce along with the nice texture of the mafaldine pasta and nice and tender meat made this such a great dish. Very generous portion size, too. Even when we were finished and we stayed and talked a bit, we weren't rushed by the waiter and he let us continue to stay and talk. That was pretty cool of him. Also came by several times to drop off water and check if we needed anything else. Some negatives are that the place is pretty dark and kind of cramped. It is also pretty loud, so you will need to speak pretty loudly to be heard at your table. Overall, I loved the braised shot rib mafaldine. First time dining at this location of The Smith. The location is bigger on the inside than what you see when you enter from the street. There is another dining area in the back for customers to dine. We were there on a weekend, so it was busy. We had a little bit of a wait, so we got drinks at the bar. The ambiance for dinner is a little darker than the Nomad location we usually frequent when in Manhattan. So those who have trouble seeing in low light may have problems reading the menus. We sat in the back area and sat at a table where it was half chairs and half bench seating. We had plenty of space at our table. The Smith has daily specials that rotate thru the week. Since it was Saturday I got the baby back ribs special which had a sweet glaze, kale and a potato salad slaw. I liked the potato salad slaw which was a refreshing bite that worked well with the tender baby back ribs. Dinner at The Smith is the perfect preamble to an evening show at the Lincoln Center. It has become tradition for my husband and I to come here. We begin our meals as usual: drinks with shrimp cocktail to split. We then segue to our main courses of the usual: a burger for him and the shrimp scampi for me, although the formula for the latter dish has changed during my last two visits, so for tonight I opted for the pasta in vodka sauce instead. It was delicious, and I decided to make it my usual going forward. Then, we end with the sticky toffee pudding, my favorite of its kind in the city. I haven't tried anything at The Smith that I didn't like. The burger is delicious and the accompanying fries are wonderfully crisp while still retaining that soft, potato-ey interior. Their shrimp cocktail is delectably plump and sweet. The pasta a la vodka is creamy and imbued with so much garlic flavor. The pudding is so decadently sweet, yet you can't help but feel like you can indulge yourself to another helping. This restaurant ambiance was just what I expected for a New York experience - full of life and hustle, bustle. The location is perfect for a meal before attending an event at the Lincoln Center. We were seated quickly because I had made a reservation. (It was busy so I definitely recommend making a reservation.) We ordered drinks and food, which arrived quickly. Both the drinks and food were absolutely delicious!! Especially loved the Manhattan drink!! My first Manhattan in Manhattan!! The only downside was we never saw our waiter Denny P after we order our food until he brought our bill (someone else delivered the food). I had steak and eggs the steak was a decent size and the eggs were good fries were BOMB. As a starter I had mac n cheese if you love a nice cheese layer like me order it ! So good. I hadn't been to The Smith in years and was excited to return before a show at Lincoln Center. I was very confused upon entry as there was a large amount of people waiting at the Host desk. Lots of people were waiting on their reservations to be met and some had been waiting up to 20 mins past their reservation time. The staff told us that their turnover was slow tonight, meaning tables were hanging out a bit after they had completed meals and paid the check. My party sat just 5 mins after our schedule reservation. I think they handled it well and that didn't go in to my rating. I think restaurants will have those nights. We got to our table and our server was very sweet and working so hard. I must admit, I was a bit underwhelmed by my pasta dish. It was good but was expecting a bit more rich flavor from a braised short rib pasta. It was a tad bland. My mom ordered a burger which she very much enjoyed. Made a reservation here on a Monday night given we had an event to attend at Lincoln Center but it was extremely busy and crowded given it was the wicked: for good premiere and everyone had the same idea. So I don't know how busy it gets on a normal weeknight. I made a reservation for 5:30pm and was seated right away. We only wanted to come for a quick bite so my daughter ordered Mac and cheese and I ordered crispy chicken pillard. The chicken was well seasoned, crispy on the outside, moist on the inside. Placed on top of a bed of garlic whipped potatoes, which was smooth and creamy. The lemon caper sauce balanced out the greasiness from the fried chicken. The portion size was very generous and I was super full even though I shared half of my chicken with my daughter to go with her Mac and cheese and I only had a couple bites of the whipped potatoes. My 10 year old daughter thoroughly enjoyed her Mac and cheese and claimed it's cheesy and al dente. Our server was awesome as she was friendly, quick and efficient, and gave us just the right amount of attention without overwhelming us. It was loud given how busy it was but it didn't bother us as we were still able to have a conversation without losing our voice. Apologies in advance for a lengthy review- TL:DR- The Smith has really gone downhill Really sad to update my review of the Smith from 5 stars to 1- but after several recent negative experiences I am sorry to no longer recommend the Smith to family, friends and visitors to NYC. The Smith used to be a hospitable, accessible restaurant located conveniently to central park, and lincoln center with a large, well executed menu that you could find something for anyone. They had great customer service and well prepared food Perhaps they have been unable to handle the additional customers with the various Daniel Boulud restaurants around the corner closed for renovation but my last 3 trips to the Smith have featured low quality dishes, exceptionally high wait times for food, and poor customer service. On the last 2 occasions I did politely bring my concerns to the attention of management. The first time I dined for brunch- they previously had a delicious steak and eggs. My dining companion and I both ordered our steaks medium rare. The steaks took a very very long time and arrived medium well- with the medium well toothpicks in them. Our server did not check on us for a while so they sat, though we were hungry, we requested medium rare as we had ordered, they obliged but the steaks we received another 25 min later clearly had not rested at all. It was not busy we were there for a late brunch you can see from my photos the room was half empty, ive been to the Smith for brunch fully packed and had a perfectly cooked steak many times A few weeks later my parents wanted to dine at the Smith for dinner. We were seated at the same time as a table behind us and the 3 tables around us were all seated 10-20 minutes after us. We did not order apps or drinks went straight to entrees. My parents split a burger and salad and I made the grave mistake of Ordering the Braised Short Rib Mafaldine. Our food took FOREVER. The table to the left of us received their appetizers, entrees, their bill and left before our waitress even came back to us. The table to the right had their drinks apps and steaks. Our waitress Madison checked in on every table but was avoiding our attempts to flag her down for an update. When we finally got her attention she said "oh I just checked with the kitchen a few minutes ago, your food is coming soon"- surely she could have checked in with us or at least offered us more bread? Another 15 min elapse and our food arrives. My parents enjoy their salad but their burger was cold. My braised short mafaldine has absolutely no meat. At first, my mom just assumed they brought the wrong dish and asked the expediter if he was sure that was the right dish. As our server Madison was of course no where, the expediter just took the plate and said he would check. He came back a few minutes later and said it was correct wheres the short rib? I poked around, no meat anywhere barely any sauce, no meat in the sauce, no meat period. Tried to flag down madison in vein. My parents werent happy with their meals and we decided we just wanted to pay and leave. We finally got madison's attention and explained we were dissatisfied with the service and had not had this experience the past 30+'times dining here. She offered us a complimentary dessert which we declined and we asked for the bill. The Manager arrived with the bill- and honestly we all would have been content with a "I heard you didnt have a great experience tonight, I hope we can welcome you back in the future" Instead it was a rapid fire storm of excuses-the other tables around us weren't all Madison's tables- with all due respect, my mom and I together have several years of waitressing experience who the server is shouldnt impact not receiving your food. Then manager says those tables just ordered salads- categorically false- and my parents also ordered a salad? The cherry on top- he blamed the customer fot the short rib malfadine- he said first the kitchen prepared it with short rib chunks and "people complained" so they switched to ground short rib, "then people complained about that" so he assertted that the bowl I was served was a combo of ground short rib and short rib chunks and they added extra chunks for me at my request...... We won't be dining at the Smith again and eagerly await the re-opening of Daniel Boulud's restaurants read more

Looking for a standout in the Lincoln Center area? The Smith may just be the answer to your problem. We had a reservation for breakfast and I'm glad we did cause despite arriving at opening, seats began quickly getting filled here. The interior is great, a nod to old school New York. The outside, where we sat, was nice as well. They were very accommodating of our dog by bringing him a water bowl and the outdoor dining area is well staffed. The service is good too. We ordered pretty quick and the food also came out quick as well. Here's how the food was: We started off with a mac and cheese, which may sound crazy but man was it the right decision. The mac and cheese was phenomenal, cheese dripping and noodles perfectly chewy. The top had that crust too, just great. We also ordered the french toast and it was good as well. The bread was thick and soft, the caramelized bananas were a bit sweet though so we ate it without to balance out the flavor. The Benedict Johnny was good, the cornbread sweet and savory.The chicken sausage was good and the poached egg added a good texture to things and a bit more flavor. We were at the Smith for at least the 10th time last week. The food was a bit worse than usual. Our main complaint about the food was that the short rib ragu had no meat. We complained, and they added one small piece. The real issue was the service or lack thereof. Several tables seated after us paid their check before we were brought our meals. Now, mixups happen in the kitchen. But our server (Madison) never came by to check or explain. Finally, after the meal, the manager came by and apologized some - but also tried to rationalize the lack of service and the lack of meat. Just like another reviewer, we came here to escape the rain and it was pretty good choice. We had the calamari which was so good ALTHOUGH it's like one part calamari to one part fried zucchini, olives and onions which had it not been so good I would've felt gipped but they won me over. It was so great coming to the Smith for lunch. They are located in the heart of Midtown and there is something for everyone on the menu. The location is spacious with a rustic diner vibe. The staff is really nice and seated my friends and I right away. I ordered the Smith Burger cheddar which was a good size and so delicious. The burger came with bacon jam, crispy onions, pickles and a salad on the side. I must say this was the best burger I've ever had. It was cooked to perfection and was seasoned very well. They provide complimentary still and sparkling water which is nice and the menu is rather limited with there not being a soup of the day. I ordered their tomato soup which was the favorite part of my meal, the soba noodle salad and my friend ordered the chips and dip and the goat cheese omelette. Reservations are highly recommended. It was very noisy and holding a conversation was tough. The server dropped by a couple times until we were ready to place our order. As far as beverages, we each had an Aperol Spritz and tea. I chose Green Mint. I deviated from the usual eggs for brunch and ordered the big salad Kale and Quinoa with Grilled Chicken. My friend craved the Smith Burger. The salad included everything one could ask for: baby Kale, sprinkled quinoa, dried cranberries, slivered toasted almonds and Ricotta Salata (a type of cheese). The dressing was a Dijon Vinaigrette (served on the side per my request). This salad was excellent! Flavorful, filling and fantastic. So glad I chose it. My friend raved about the burger. The brunch/lunch menu had raw bar offerings as well as traditional brunch offerings. We shared a Kale and Quinoa salad which was chopped with cranberries and toasted almonds. It was a refreshing twist on salad. The Tomato soup is a meal in itself served with melted cheese on top, it was delicious. We had the lunch special which was corned beef on grilled rye Ruben it was delicious served with fries or side salad. The wait staff were friendly and attentive. They get high marks for presentation.
