So sad to give this place two stars- but please know it was only of service and attitude from the owner. The food is delicious. Long time favorite but I'll be taking a break. Went on a Monday which was quite busy. Spoke to the owner afterwards out of courtesy, thinking to not post, however he was so extremely rude and displayed such poor taste in receiving feedback, I thought I'd share. Our waitress, who wound up being new was extremely slow and forgetful. Nice enough, however when enjoying an establishment for food service, one isn't expecting such poor service. When I spoke the the owner he was extremely rude and defensive. Not once bothering to ask what could have been better or even apologizing. We had already paid our bill in full and finished our very very long meal due to the slow service and were not looking for a discount of any sort. Simply to provide feedback in hopes that they could improve service for others. His tone, remarks, and defensiveness solidified the fact that I will be taking a long break and visiting Madame Claud's a bit more frequently. It's a shame to have such great food and such a terribly poor experience. Hopefully they get it together and learn how to accept friendly feedback a bit more graciously. read more

I've been here on numerous occasions for dinner and brunch. Overall the food is very good, but nothing stands out as truly exceptional. Given the many other dining options in the area the food needs to be much better to compensate for what is typically mediocre service. I'm prompted to write this review after all this time due to my experience dining with family for brunch this past weekend. The waitress did greet us right away and took our drink orders. So far so good. After taking our starter and entree orders she seemingly forgot we were there. We even had to get up to get her attention to bring coffee refills. (Why do so few waiters also bring more milk and sugar when they bring the coffee?) After about 20 minutes (and asking about then) the starters were brought out. Again, the quality was pretty good. The reason we wanted to come here is their delicious French toast. As it was describe on the menu it comes with mixed berries and pure maple syrup. When the dish was served there was no syrup (asked for it and a small ramekin was brought) and sliced green apple. No berries. "So what?" I hear you say. If something is described a certain way on the menu and you don't have those ingredients, simply tell the guest, and offer them another option. Instead the waitress seemed confused by our question about the change, and told us that they'll probably have berries tomorrow. Terrific! But now? Moments later the bartender/manager came over to ask what was wrong. We said everything is fine, but she insisted, saying, "don't lie to me, what's wrong." We told her and was again met by what seemed to be confusion. She said, "don't worry, they're delicious. I promise." Well thank you for your attempt at an apology (?) but it came off as condescending. They did take the coffees off the bill, which we didn't ask for nor expected, so that was thoughtful. But they added 18% gratuity, which was not. We would rather have had the 5 second conversation when ordering to let us know they were out of an ingredient, or the 10 second conversation later before bringing out the entrees to ask if we wanted to change our order. It's so easy. I did it as a waiter for years. Simple good service will make up for so many problems elsewhere in a dining experience, but poor service will ruin any other excellent qualities. read more

Met up with a friend and his girlfriend here for a goodbye dinner since I was moving out of Jersey City. I got the short ribs which were really good. The service was fine during the main meal and the atmosphere was cute. All I remember is that we had about 30 minutes before 24 (the tv show) was on and my friend decided to order the "Warm Moelleux au Chocolate" dessert. That goddamn dessert took 20 minutes or more to come to our table! I feel like it would've been courteous for them to have told us that. We seriously asked for it multiple times and they kept saying "it's almost done". Once we got it it was the worst chocolate molten cake I've ever had. Please go to Chili's if you'd like some good molten cake. So yes, food was good but the dessert was so-so and I really wish the waitress would've told us it would take another 20 or so minutes for the dessert to come out before placing the order. read more

Great cozy place for a dinner. We were supposed to sit in one of the bubbles outside but decided against it (mostly bc we felt bad making the server walk out there for only us). Drinks were great, we weren't hungry enough for apps, and the quail and braised ribs ravioli were both really good (the quail came with these bacon & lentils that were fantastic! They had a Smokey and savory taste). We did have room for dessert so we got the chocolate mousse and flourless chocolate cake, which they graciously substituted the salted caramel for raspberry sorbet. I can't speak for those who have left negative reviews, but I had nothing short of an excellent experience here this past Sunday for brunch. A friend and I enjoyed brunch on a chilly morning in one of their Covid-friendly, private, (and warm) igloos (the restaurant also supplied hand sanitizer on each table). My friend, who had eaten here before, couldn't decide what to order because every dish she had had previously was delicious. I ordered the pork belly with shaved brussels and she, the seafood stew, and both were amazing! Service was also excellent. Stood outside the entrance for someone like an host... then decided to sit at a table ... got yelled at ... lol ... then was told "wait I'll grab some menus for you"... I cannot understand why this place only has 3 stars... That's a bit unkind because overall, La Source is a good neighborhood French Bistro. The most impressive thing about La Source is the menu which offers many traditional French classics, and includes several vegetarian options. My meal was incredibly fresh, as it should be since most ingredients are locally sourced. Another nice thing to mention: if you do not drink beer (and even if you do) you will have plenty of choices. My wife and I went there for lunch today. The food was edible but not great. Unfortunately, the service was arguably the worst we have experienced in many, many years. Juan, our waiter, made us feel like an imposition the moment we sat down. His lack of professionalism made it clear to me that he didn't want to be there and wanted his customers to be there even less. You might like the food more than we did. Another reason for jersey city residents to not bother crossing the river for a great dining experience, and potentially making New Yorkers take the path and experience what Jersey City has to offer. We had an excellent overall experience at Bistro La Source - the ambience is perfect for couples, families and medium groups - looks like a French bistro and offers views of the World Trade Center. If the weather is good sitting outside is great. If not, there are nice tables and a bar indoors. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed, the staff extremely helpful, and the food is of a freshness that you generally associate with stuffier places. Which brings me to the food - the highlight for us was the Vegeterian entree - an amazing platter of couscous, sautéed greens, ratatouille, beets, chickpeas - a combination whose power you realize only when it hits your mouth. The other entrees such as fish and chips, and even the kids menu Mac and cheese, burger and chicken fingers were tasty. Desert and wine choices are good as well. If you are a resident of Paulus Hook, this is a neighborhood restaurant you will be glad is waking distance from your home. The combination of price, ambience, service and food make it a great place to go if you want casual fine dining in Jersey City - thanks to bistro la source and several other similar places in the area, there is no reason to take a PATH into the city for a good gastronomical experience anymore. read more

Nice brunch spot. Had the moules Thai style which were plump n juicy. Side order of truffle fries which were below average. The flavors were there but the fries were limp and overcooked. Nice burger with mushrooms. We asked for medium rare but it arrived medium, still delicious though. Again, medocre fries. The cappuccino and crepe were amazing. Cute place but that's about it. The food and drinks are just OK and the service is all over the place. We came for brunch on a Sunday, there were just a few tables with diners. Yet, they managed to forget to place our order and hadn't we been asking them to check with the kitchen, we would still be waiting. When the food eventually came, the bacon was almost raw and the side salad didn't look fresh. When we asked for the check, the tip was already included (party of 4)!! So this is one of my fave restaurants, but with that said... Service is off lately. Dined there this evening and there were several errors in the food and in the billing. Service was also a bit slow for my taste, with taking orders and bringing wine. I really think that the fact that there is a hard-wired 20% gratuity in every bill reduces the attentiveness and promptness of the waitstaff. They are getting compensated no matter if the service and accuracy of food is good or not. Also there was an odd addition of corn to the burrata. I chose not to sample it because it seemed strange, but their burrata was definitely one of the reasons I visit. And corn? In a burrata? The staff was very apologetic about the errors and problems, and worked to resolve issues, but best is no errors, and enjoying one's dining experience without having to raise issues. I think that being past covid, we should go back to normal gratuity policies, and that that would assist with ensuring that service is up to par. read more

Bistro La Source is one of my absolute favorites in JC. The food has always been great, but has gotten even better in the last year. Classic French food with some original twists. Have ordered everything on the menu from the favorite homemade raviolis to the Monday mussels, and fois grax and French onion soup. The inside is cozy and transporting to a neighborhood bistro in France, and the outside area has transformed a parking area into a festive, light strewn romantic dining area with heated igloos. I like this place a lot. Don't let the 3 stars fool you, read on... I go for Monday Mussel Madness and usually pair it with a bottle of wine or Prosecco and some mixed drinks for the fiance. All you can eat mussels for the price of your average lunch, you cant beat it (although the drinks aren't that cheap still worth it)! You have the option of 5 different types of Mussels, Diablo which is red sauce with a kick, Normandy which is a creamy bacon mushroom sauce, marinara (it's spelled the french way on the menu), the Provencal which is a red sauce with white wine, garlic and herbs, and the Thai which is a coconut base with a peppery kick. Honestly, they are all unreal but my favorites are the Provencal and Normandy. They serve usually a different array of breads which are delectable when you dunk them in the mussel sauces. They make the mussels per order which causes a bit of a wait but they do not disappoint. The restaurant is cozy and their seating time is usually paired a wait but they do take reservations. The reason for the 3 stars is purely because I've been involved in a previous and intense run in with my party of 6 one evening and the manager that didn't go over to hot (disastrous actually) but we won't need to go into detail purely to avoid embarrassing him from something that happened a couple of years ago as I saw he is still employed there....BUT it did make me contemplate giving a 1 star review however I decided to go back and give it another shot this past Monday. No complaints this time around with the manager and his attitude. Causing my what would be 1 star review to bump to 3. Such a shame because the place could really be 5 stars. The run in was so intense it actually had me avoiding this place for about two years. I try not to hold grudges in life especially when it's keeping me from a fantastic menu (haha) The food is just too good I had to go back so KUDOS to the chefs for sure! The bartenders, servers, and bus boys are usually very good although understaffed. Anyway, the place is a solid 3 stars. I enjoy myself there usually. Try their Monday night all you can eat mussels ($12 with purchase of any one drink)! Service on Monday nights is slower than usual due to the crowd & the all you can eat concept, but once you get the food it is great. I have been here several times & there is a choice of 4 different sauces & you can change the type of sauce with each plate of mussels. Bread is delicious, crusty & fresh, drinks are great & I recommend trying the mac n' cheese (can be ordered vegetarian if you prefer) or the truffle parm french fries as a side. It is quite noisy on Mondays (I've only been there on a Monday), so it's not the best place for a romantic dinner, but is great for a fun evening out with your favorite someone or a group of friends. I have lived in the neighborhood for years and finally decided to give it a try. Stepping inside, the interior was quaint and appropriate for its location in a historic district. I was offered thr option of sitting at a table or the bar and I opted for the latter. I ordered the Assiette Vegetarian. After my food came out, I didn't receive any further service. No one (neither waiter nor bartender) refilled my water glass or paid me any mind. The most disappointing part of my meal was the food itself. The dish, which was lukewarm, initially seemed to have some tasty elements. I thought the Brussels sprouts and beets were passable. The couscous was not good at all and seemed quite stale. It was the spinach, however, that completely ruined my meal. In the center of the deal was a helping of sauteed spinach. I was excited to try it and was surprised when the initial bite yielded a generous helping of grit and sand. Determined not to be overly sensitive, I swallowed the gritty greens and tried another bite. It was more stone then spinach and entirely inedible. I actually pulled a small pebble out from between my teeth and placed it on the bar. It's a miracle I didn't crack a tooth. At that point, I had completely lost my appetite and left without finishing my meal (which I never do). I understand that a little sand might be expected with fresh produce, but this was beyond the pale. It seemed almost as though the spinach wasn't rinsed prior to cooking. Don't waste your time with the Monday night mussels. It takes 10-15 mins for the first round to come out, then at least 45 mins in between each subsequent order. Waitresses are rude and have poor/negative attitudes. I really want to like this place. The flavor of the mussels are actually quite good. However, as you wait for your food, you can't help but look around the restaurant... And nobody has food on the table. You'd be one of the lucky ones if you even have bread. The food is alright - my boyfriend particularly likes the fried chicken with mashed potatoes. However... I have major beef with the service. I'd love to say it's a one-off issue, but really, we have issues every time we go in: 1. We once ordered the chicken and potatoes (see above) to pick up. When I got it home, we realized there was *maybe* one tablespoonful's worth of potatoes. So I take it back - it was pricey for no taters - and the manager/staff accused us of eating the side dish then returning for more. Yeah, okay... because I'd want to go back out in the frozen winter air to get more instant potatoes. We're not liars, just people who think you should get SOMEthing for your money... 2. When I've been to the bar, it seems like I'm REALLY bothering the bartenders when I ask for... oh, I don't know... a glass of water, or a refill, or a menu. :-/ 3. I will be the first to say that people who tell you to "Smile, sweetheart" really are just the WORST. However, when you're working at a restaurant and someone is trying to be friendly and you just stare at them blankly while they ask questions about the food, it's generally considered rude. 4. For $12, you should get more than a small handful of lettuce, literally 5 cubed pieces of beets, and a piece of goat cheese the size of one of those Babybel cheeses. In order words = this place is le pricey. If the food and service was amazing, I would have no problem paying $40+ for one person to be satisfied, hunger-wise, but alas, the food and service is not, and I'm sadly marking this one off my list for good. read more

I guess technically it's still considered "All you can eat" b/c if they don't serve you any mussels you can't eat them. I implore you to look at the "trending" tab of the stars. It's gone from 4 stars to 2 since February and that is in line with my own experiences and why I'm updating my review. UNACCEPTABLE experience from start to finish and I beg you to avoid this place until they get their act together. The night started with with a Seinfeld Episode (our table, like Cartright's, was always "5 minutes" away from being ready despite my reservation) and tragically ended with the Simpsons episode of me having to eat two plastic lobsters to get my seafood fill. We were supposed to be seated at 8 pm and sometime after 10 we paid our bill leaving the place hungry. Since I don't look at my watch when I'm with friends, I have no idea the length of delays for each interaction, but needless to say we spent about 15 minutes eating and 1.75 hours waiting. 1) as mentioned above, delay in being seated 2) 2 out of 6 plates from initial order of mussels were incorrect. 3) had to ask for utensils and napkins 4) had to ask for bread, were told they were sold out, but "maybe" they'd be getting more 5) a small basket finally came, and we hungrily sopped our sauce with it. At this point we're over an hour in and have had one small bowl each, of which 25% were either unopened or empty. 6) shells and bowls were removed. out of the first 6 bowls two were dropped by the waitress and both times I was splashed with juice. "Cleanup" consisted of kicking the shells under a different table. No apology. 7) waitress failed to ask us "so, what flavor do you want next? and instead just walked away. 8) we eventually flagged her down and put in another order. 9) These bowls were smaller and there was another mistake in the order. At this time the waitress convinced the wine drinkers to upgrade from glasses to a bottle to save money. 10) When she came out with the wine, the person who had the incorrect order of mussels asked for what he wanted. Another person from our group, whose plate had been 50% inedible asked for another plate as well. 11) when these two new dishes came to our table (different waitress), the rest of us tried to put in our third order. We were told that they were sold out of mussels! No explanation. Certainly no apology. 12) Eventually our first waitress comes back and asks "did you hear about the mussels being sold out? Okay, good, do you want to order anything else instead?" As though we were going to reward this place for screwing us over with MORE of our hard earned money. Since we had half a bottle of wine that SHE upsold us we had to linger, but she gave us permission to stay at the table. How sweet of her. Look, this place was packed for their deal, and it's a great deal in theory. But the execution goes beyond inadequacy and instead is a slap in the face insulting. Look at the reviews from last week where they ran out of bread. GET MORE BREAD. Use a little common sense and maybe a spreadsheet and figure out how much supplies you need. Don't under-staff your servers b/c doing so keeps people at their tables too long and too dissatisfied. If you can take a reservation, HOLD a reservation. And if you run out of mussels for god sakes apologize. Bring out a order of fries or a pizza or something. Chip into your profit just a little bit to make sure you don't piss off your customers. I ordered drinks ONLY to compensate for the deal. That's my way of treating a restaurant right for offering an all-you-can-eat or similar deal. So any notion of "don't complain, it's only 10 bucks" is ridiculous. My group consisted of REGULARS at this place and potential NEW customers of friends who lived in the area but have never tried it before. Now none of us are coming back. I don't understand why they think they have the right to treat my friends and me so poorly. The only crime we committed was wanting to give them our business. Probably the worst 2 hours I've ever experienced at a restaurant and the fact that the manager was walking around bragging about how many pounds of mussels they sold today is bone chilling. Why does he have such disdain for all the customers who were clearly unsatisfied b/c they made the great mistake of not eating dinner at 4 pm? A loaf of bread at dinner. I really was not a fan of BLS and I really wanted to be since I live less than two blocks away. I took my fiancee and my mom out to dinner on a Tuesday night and it seemed like a good buzz was going on. The restaurant wasn't overly crowded and everyone seemed to be having a good time. Big negatives for me were that they didn't have enough servers on and the one that they had on was super slow. The hostess had to step in to help, but she kept reminding everyone that she's the hostess and can't actually take orders, but can help run food. The second part of this was that the food wasn't good at all. I got the seafood stew and it seemed that they were using frozen products and you could tell in the chewiness and lack of flavor in the dish. I'd say I'd try again if I notice there are more servers on, but why when there are so many other restaurants nearby with better service and food? read more

This one is tough between 3 and 4 stars. The food was good, but nothing really stood out as memorable. We got the price-fix and the wine pairing. The escargot were cooked well, but honestly it's all about butter and garlic. Hard to mess that up. I had the pork loin and the lady had the pumpkin ravioli. I'm glad we share everything, because if one of us had only gotten the ravioli we would have been left hungry. Good flavor, but tiny portion. The pork loin was cooked well, but the polenta was essentially flavorless. Agree with other people that if you order a la carte, it seems slightly overpriced for what it is. For prices on par with the best restaurants in the area, I found it slightly underwhelming. Again, not bad, but if you're trying to price yourself into the high-end, you really need to deliver...with every dish, every time. I don't even remember how the desserts tasted, which is not what I expect from a French Restaurant, who normally pride themselves on their rich desserts. Very disappointing experience, although it started off promising. My husband and I ate at Bistro la Source last night for the first time. Despite mixed reviews on yelp, we decided to give it a shot. THE GOOD: The restaurant is cute and intimate. Menu looks great; we were actually having a hard time deciding what appetizers to get because there were many that sounded delicious. Drink list was solid and reasonably priced. Our server was knowledgable about the menu and made suggestions on what we would enjoy. We had the oysters, escargot, and quail for apps. They came out quickly and were all quite good. It went downhill quickly from here... THE BAD: I ordered the duck breast and my husband ordered the rabbit pasta and a side of Mac and cheese. When our server brought our food, she forgot the Mac and cheese. I reminded her about it and she said it would be right out. It was pretty clear that she forgot to place the order for that item. As soon as I looked at my duck, I could tell it was dry. I had asked for chef recommendation on how to have it cooked and the top half looked about medium and the bottom almost well done. I took my first bite and it was cold. There was only 1 item on my plate that was actually hot. I was going to suck it up and eat it but my husband insisted on sending it back (which we NEVER DO). Called the server back over and she said that she would have them remake it. Very apologetic. Still no Mac and cheese. So my husband felt bad eating his meal while I had nothing. About 5 minutes later she comes back out with my dish and the Mac and cheese. My dish hadn't been remade. It looked like it had been microwaved. The meat was now completely well done. We asked to have it and the Mac and cheese removed from the bill because we just wanted to leave at that point. THE UGLY: Our server got slammed about 15 minutes after we arrived. It appeared that she was the only person actually serving tables in the back area. The gentleman who was either the manager or the owner did nothing to help her. We actually saw him sitting at the bar, drinking a beer and eating a meal while his staff was running around trying to take care of tables with no support. Disappointed, again. I agree with my fellow yelpers that mussel-Monday is a great deal and has been quite delish on the whole, but everything else has been below par. Soggy fish and chips, overcooked fries, average-ish sandwiches and inattentive service. As a lover of divey-places, I am certainly not someone who gets hung up on ambiance, but has anyone else noticed a bad smell...a fishy and musty smell? And there are an inordinate number of flies. Ick! I should have walked out today when i received the menu. I understand random bugs and seasonal changes and moments where things are hectic, but this place is not making an effort. I live in the neighborhood and will not return, even for mussels, because I'm a little skeeved. Overall, I have been disappointed over my last few visits, and moreover, the price definitely does not match the quality of the food. Our go to place. The food is always great only had minor let downs once or twice in many years eating here. The best way to describe the food is French colonial. Meaning food of the French colonies. We love the cozy, shabby chic style. It's not dumpy and it's not ritzy it's just right. Awesome bread most of the time. I swear they run out and wind up having to grab a French loaf at a grocery from time to time. But the usual bread is a great sour dough with a chewy crust and soft airy inside. Great for dunking I soup or the mussels. One of the few places you can get Chimay on tap. Also one of the few places that has mergueze and that sausage is paired with a perfectly grilled octopus! Simply love it here. Oh and it's also about the only place to offer off street parking. Prices are very reasonable. Win win win read more

Was very excited to eat here after perusing the menu. After actually having dined here, I would never come back. From the outside, this place looks like a lovely, little hole in the wall cafe. But this place is TINY, and the noise level gets ridiculous during rush hour. Although the place is small, service is still very slow. I waited half an hour for my lamb shank, which I didn't mind because I love lamb and figured the dish would be worth the wait. But when it came, it wasn't even trimmed properly, and still had quite a bit of fat on it. I couldn't enjoy it-- fatty and not flavorful. When the server came back over to collect our plates, he didn't even remark that I had barely touched my food, although my friend had finished his plate. Just asked if we wanted dessert. When I said no just the check, he rolled his eyes! Then it took him another 15 minutes to bring the check over. Went across the street to Lighthorse to have some amazing desserts at the bar. Friendly bartenders, who gave great service. read more
