HANGER STEAK FRITES
Richard R.

I love a good French bistro. A French bistro is one of my favorite comfort foods. Bistro La Source did not dissapoint. This charming restaurant in Jersey City is only a short walk from my daughter's apartment. The light rail stops very close to it also. The inside is very nice and very French and welcoming. We chose to sit outside on this pleasant summer evening. There is abundant outdoor seating. We ordered the Thai muscles, the Bronzino, the soft shell crab special, and my go to, steak frites. Everything was outstanding. I could drink the sauce for the Thai muscles. My steak frites was tender and delicious. Service was great all night and very attentive. We had some crazy good desserts also I would definitely come back here and try some of the other staples such as duck Confit and the hamburger.

We had a lovely evening here. I love their new location - it's very modern and spacious inside - and the servers are wonderful. I got the pumpkin ravioli - which was really nice to see on the menu outside of autumn - and a lemon drop martini. My fiancé also got an amaretto sour that was delicious.

My good friend Terry and I tried Bistro La Source at 299 Marin Blvd. for the first time for lunch today. We loved the ambiance and the food was absolutely amazing. We shared their perfectly fried calamari. It was breaded and tasty to perfection. Lemon on the side. We each had the Croque Monsieur. Also perfectly prepared. The drinks from the bar were great too. Special commendation goes to server Marcus McGinnity and chef Milton Bonilla. Terry and I will definitely be back to Bistro La Source.

French cuisine in the heart of jersey city. They start you off with fresh warm bread which was delicious. Ordered a bunch of dishes but the favorites were the grilled octopus and duck salad. The pasta ragu was a bit too salty.. Very busy on a weekend night! It seems like they packed as many tables and chairs as possible inside this place because we were sitting pretty close to other people. If you like your space this may not be the place for you. It gets kinda loud with everyone inside so not the best place if you're trying to have a conversation.

Decided to visit Bistro La Source at their new location on Marin where Latham House was. Disappointed is an understatement. :( won't be back. Bread service - nothing special. Bread was falling apart like it was old, the softened butter was a highlight though Calamari - served with spicy mayo??? Weird but ok. Would have preferred marinara. Onion soup - this was ok, I wish the onions weren't cut so thin and wish there were more. Overall this was one of the better things we got. Sirloin au poivre - ... eeeek. This was really, really bad. The mashed potatoes had to be instant, the sauce was flavorless, steak was overcooked. Ate a couple bites and didn't take my leftovers. Server asked me numerous times if I wanted a box even though I said no Steak frites - significantly better than the sirloin, the sauce was flavorful and you can't really mess up French fries.

Adorable restaurant. We arrived on a Saturday night without a reservation and the owner happily accommodated us. The service was extremely slow and the waitresses were dressed like they work in a dive bar. We did not get any bread, all of the tables around us did. Food was very good. The atmosphere was perfect for a date night, but the staff didn't give off the same energy.

I had a craving for risotto and wanted to in particular have an option for a seafood one. So, I found this place on Ubereats with a high rating which I verified over Google as well and it had a good rating. Based on that I went ahead and placed an order for a Local Tomato and Jersey peach salad, Crab and shrimp risotto and Bittersweet chocolate mousse. The salad was very average which had these huge croutons with tiny pieces of peach and cherry tomatoes. Very average and not at tasty as the proportions were off. For $16 that they are charging over the platform, it honestly was thievery. The crab and shrimp risotto was terrible. They had added celery which was not cooked off. It was raw and every bite had that terrible crunchy raw celery taste. There was barely any crab and the shrimps were over cooked and rubbery. Not to forget the portions are an absolute robbery! This was applicable to both the risotto and the salad. The mousse was average and palatable. But again nothing great. One of the worst food experiences and I would never order from this place again. For a bill of $68.89, this was one of the worst meals I have had in recent times. I highly recommend not ordering from this place.

I went here with a friend for a casual Wednesday lunch and it was not busy. Generally on the other side of the river (Jersey City), most restaurants you can just walk in even prime time but I still made a reservation to be safe as I needed to head to the airport after the meal. We shared the Escargots Au Pastis and Onion Soup Gratinée to start. Escargots are very good - lots of lemon and butter so definitely very rich and heavy. It was prepared well as there is not a strong earthy taste that I got from my first escargots experience elsewhere. The onion soup is also good - lots and lots of cheese, with soup that is salted the right amount. We then got the ravioli and salade Lyonnaise with crispy duck confit. The ravioli is a miss - the tomato sauce they used is quite plain and only served to make the dish saucy. The beef short ribs inside were a bit dry and not too flavorful. However, the duck confit is so tender and juicy - almost fall off the bone. The salad that they served on the side was okay, and the egg was cooked adequately, though not perfectly runny. Service is overall excellent as the server checks up on you and fulfills requests in a timely manner. Fortunately I read the reviews in advance and most of the negative reviews had to do with automatic 20% gratuity not being clear and the customer double tipped. Thus, it didn't come across as a surprise - regardless, this time around, they did draw an obvious circle to show that gratuity is already included in the bill.

I always pass by this restaurant, there's a huge outdoor seating area but the restaurant itself is tiny (not great for winter). We sat outside and they turned on the heating lamps. There are two main menu sections, one for seafood and one for everything else. They served us warm complimentary bread and butter which is always a nice touch. To start, I ordered the French onion soup. It was okay, I didn't like the smell or flavor of the cheese so if you're a cheese fan (especially the stinky kind) I think you would enjoy this soup. For my main dish I ordered the ravioli stuffed with beef short rib. Again it had that same stinky cheese as the soup which I didn't like. But the actual pasta tasted homemade and it was cooked really well. For dessert I tried the apple bread pudding, this was a win, it was served warm. It had a delicious caramel taste, perfect for fall. I think I would come back here to try the seafood as the waiter recommended some dishes from there!

Great experience! We went to order the mussels for mussel Monday & the server said we both had to order that, but we didn't want 4 bowls of mussels because we also wanted to order an appetizer & entree. The owner heard our conversation and let us continue with one order of the mussels for the Monday deal (2 bowls, side of fries & dessert for $35). Both mussels were delish and they brought complimentary bread for dipping in the sauce. Will go back for this deal! The Spanish octopus was served with lentils & chorizo and was very good. The short rib was great & came with mashed potatoes. We went around 8 and were able to walk in without a reservation. There were a few tables, but the bar was full. We took our dessert to go and it was great chocolate mousse!

Eh, it was alright. Worth going to check it out but don't think I'd be rushing to go back. Espresso martinis were good, short rib ravioli was okay - didn't think it was homemade or at least didn't taste that way. I ordered the Panko crusted chicken and thought it was bland - personally the Italian in me makes better chicken cutlets ;) . I assumed it was going to have more gravy but without it the meal was a bit dry. We also got the sirloin which was pretty good.

For my entree, I ordered the vodka rigatoni and a side of buttered broccoli. The vodka rigatoni was really good - liked the flavor and a decent size of pasta. The broccoli was really good for some reason to me. Also tried the truffle mac and cheese which was incredibly rich and tasted great. As a dessert, we had the chocolate pie which was dense, rich, and topped with a huge dollop of whipped topping. I really liked the atmosphere of the place, loud roaring 20s style with jazz playing. Plus I kept finding myself checking out the mural on the wall. Try it for yourself - but worth the fight to get a table.

But after all the hype, the Michelin buzz, and the impossible reservation, I left feeling like something was missing. The chrysanthemum salad is the real deal. Buried under a mountain of parmesan with a punchy dressing, it is bright and textural and honestly the best thing we ordered. Get it without question. The crudo was also a highlight: fresh, delicate, well-balanced. My only complaint is that it was gone in about four bites. The garlic flatbread, which is supposed to be a crowd-pleaser, came out genuinely soggy in the middle. Not in a good way. The edges delivered but the center just didn't hold up. And then there's the lasagna, the dish everyone tells you to order. The pinwheel presentation is adorable and I get why it photographs so well. But ours was sausage-forward to a fault, light on cheese, and swimming in a sauce that just didn't have much to say. For the restaurant's signature dish, it felt like a letdown. Don Angie is perfectly good. It is not a bad meal. But for the effort it takes to get a table, I expected more than a few memorable moments scattered across an otherwise forgettable spread.

Very thick and flavorful sauce along with the nice texture of the mafaldine pasta and nice and tender meat made this such a great dish. Very generous portion size, too. Even when we were finished and we stayed and talked a bit, we weren't rushed by the waiter and he let us continue to stay and talk. That was pretty cool of him. Also came by several times to drop off water and check if we needed anything else. Some negatives are that the place is pretty dark and kind of cramped. It is also pretty loud, so you will need to speak pretty loudly to be heard at your table. Overall, I loved the braised shot rib mafaldine.
