We live in Painesville and have been coming to Bistro 70 for years. We LOVE the ambiance and the bar there. Sadly, the last several times we've eaten there or ordered takeout, were not great. The food has been severely over salted (and we like salt) and when my husband paid $21 for a takeout burger, that was literally all he got... the meat and a bun... no fries, which were listed on the menu as the side for the burger. For the price we pay (plus tip) it just hasn't been up to par the last several months. Definitely need to ease up on the salt! I had a salmon dinner there the last time we ate in the restaurant and it was so salty I couldn't even eat my meal. read more

Always great food. They made me an old drink that is no longer on their menu. Service for us has always been impeccable. Most nights the chef comes to your table and checks on the meal. I had the special; grilled bone-in pork chops served with potatoes and mixed veggies and topped with a rosemary Demi glace sauce... amazingly tasty. Great flavors. We were a 4top. And we ordered a combination of things. The men went with the filet by recommendation from the server. They were both overcooked, but we rarely order filet or steak out because of that reason , we know we can make it better at home. Sacchetti side flavorful and light. Brussels sprouts not s favorite. We didn't complain about the filet. Everything else was amazing the tuna appetizer was spot on, the lamb lollipops totally worth it. My friends really enjoyed the blackened grouper bites . I had the stuffed grouper and it was spectacular. my girlfriend ordered the lobster pasta and it was a huge serving. I did sample a bite and it was delicious. Great presentation on all dishes. A lot of food . Two of us have been in the bar and restaurant business for years. We were saying this is probably one of the best restaurants we've been to since we moved to Ohio at the end of 2022. And we've been everywhere, NY, Chicago, SoCal, we love and live for good food. We will be going back. Just not for the filet. Key lime pie was very good. Not the traditional of what you would expect. First and LAST time diner. There is nothing upscale about this place, literally. The lighting is so dark that as soon as I walked in the door, I almost tripped on a rug. The tables are haphazardly placed with no flow whatsoever. On the trip to the restroom I passed an open stock room, the kitchen (which gave me a birds eye view of a hot mess), the rugs all the way down the hallway reminded me of being in a neighborhood dive bar what with all the stains. Our server was all over the place not knowing if she would remember the specials (and told us so as she was trying to gather herself: mind you there were only 2) For an "upscale" place I also would have appreciated my server dressed more conservatively rather than a tank top that was, very obviously, way too small for her. The dress code should not be more going to a bar night than serving a $50 steak that I could have put on my grill at home) Meal, BORING. A filet, sides that were nothing but a few steamed green beans and 4 potato chunks. None of which was prepared with ANY seasoning whatsoever. Gordon Ramsey would be beside himself. It was very bland and unassuming. This being said, I've made the same meal at my home many, many times and I have never had to part with over $150.00 to do so. Had a pretty large group dinner at Bistro 70 and it did not disappoint! Service was impeccable and everyone raved about their meals. With a group of 8, that's a rare occurrence! Cozy would be the first word that comes to mind when walking in the door of this restaurant. The decor is playful in the bar area which compliments the ambiance in the surrounding open dining room. The wait staff was very charming, prompt, attentive and thorough. We had many appetizers to start. The seared ahi tuna is highly recommended. We had a few glasses of wine, which are $5 a pour on Tuesdays. Nice! And the seasonal Snowball Martini was awesome! Our entrees were a house special 3-course dinner including French onion soup, Beef Strognaff and cinnamon roll dessert. I had the grouper bites as my entree with the blue salad. After not being there for a while I worried that it might have changed...nothing could be further from the truth! We made a reservation for a party of 13 prior to our visit and heard wonderful things about this restaurant, especially since my family is from this area. We walked in and were escorted upstairs to a room that was easily above 80 degrees. It was uncomfortably hot. We saw that there were magnets on the vents so we removed those .... And it all went downhill from there. First, the server asked us if we took them off and we said yes because it's really hot up here and he basically gave us attitude to the point where we were greeted by the manager, who was worse than the sever. Instead of saying we will do what we can to cool it down, she did nothing. Basically saying "it is what it is and deal with it but we aren't going to keep off the magnets because it makes the rest of the restaurant hot, so you guys will just have to suffer" Secondly, we have a friend that has a very severe gluten allergy and asked the server if there were any gluten options and he said "no, sorry... good luck" (not in those words exactly but come on dude? Like, be helpful! I will not return to this place and advise those with larger parties to not go here. We were treated poorly and decided to take our business elsewhere. read more

So we will probably not be returning here and that's sad. We had been here a few times in the distant past and my husband met a business client here yesterday and said, "did we like this place, it seemed nice." And I replied, "I wasn't impressed years ago but I've heard people go there so we should try it again." And we decided to return. Now, we go out A LOT. And we are appreciate places for what they are trying to be. We have been to top notch dining establishments and total dIves and appreciated them fully. But you'd better put out what your charging for. I'm willing to pay for an experience and I'm more than willing to be accepting that mistakes are made or that people being people have different expectations. What's not expected, is business people (chefs) acting like they're doing you a favor by not charging you for a product you can't consume or delivered subpar. We are not at all people who send dishes back, as we didn't do that tonight either... We sat at the bar tonight and ordered the lobster bisque and barramundi with risotto and asparagus. The complimentary bread was really good. It's made in house with 14yr old starter. I would have ordered a loaf of this as my meal if it was on the menu. We then had a cup of lobster bisque. It was the perfect consistency and absolutely delicious flavor wose with chunks of lobster. I would have made a meal of it if it had more lobster. The salad had homemade dressing and was light and refreshing. Our main course arrived which was gorgeously plated. As we dove in to the fish we noticed one side flakes apart easily and we couldn't cut though the other side. The bar tender came to ask how our meal was and noted our struggle. The manager quickly appeared and noted the same and took our plate from us offering to bring us something else or re-make it. We graciously said, "no, we really like it, but it's not cooked on this side so we can't eat it." The manager stated, "I can see that. I'll get a new one." And we were gracious. Just a few minutes later she returned with a freshly plated dish of the exact same piece of fish smashed back together (where we'd cut in to it in multiple places earlier was just pushed together on the plate) pipping HOT. To be honest, we expected to have a newly prepared dish for the price charged. You cannot expect to put a rested piece of protein cut in to back to heat and have it turn out the same as a properly prepared dish. You just served me leftovers. Plus, why is it so damn hot the second time? How did you heat it so quick to such a temp. At this point we decided not to eat the fish and just leave. We thanked the bartender and manager for the service which was nice. By the time we were walking out, the chef stopped us and apologized we weren't happy with our meal. My husband tried to tell him it was reasonable to have the fish unevenly cooked at the beginning but a mistake to try to reheat the same piece we'd already dissected. That's when our whole experience went totally south... The chef then basically told us he'd done us a favor by not charging us for the fish. Really? So buddy, you could have made us a fresh piece, cooked correctly and charged us and we would have left happy after enjoying a good meal with good service. You would have used two pieces of fish and only been able to charge for one, but your customer would have left happy and returned for another meal. Instead you tried to rescue, by re-heating, your mistake in a way that could never turn out like the original you intended and then had your customer leave without meeting their expectation. On their way out, you insulted them by saying, "well at least we took it off your bill," as if it was a favor to them after under delivering. You still used your product and didn't collect revenue for it, but insulted your customer and made a bad impression. The scenario is sad for the employees here. They're just trying to make a living. Beyond just the very disappointing interaction with the chef, there are some items overpriced here. The cup of soup, while delicious, was ten bucks... too much for less than 8oz soup. It would have needed to be full of lobster for that price, and it wasn't. Outside of these two issues, price and interaction with the chef, it's a decent place. Food had great taste with good temperature. Salads and lobster bisque were great! The problem was the time it took to get our drinks and the salad/soups. Our waitress took toooooo long to deliver. We had a reservation, so it wasn't a surprise that we were coming. We were also the first table seated in the back room at 5:30. But our waitress was a bit slow in service. An example would be the waiter that had more people seated at his tables. Yet water was poured for the guests prior to them walking in. The total opposite for us. My wife said her salad was perfect, but the lobster mac and cheese could have had more lobster. I tried her dish and I have to agree. But ultimately our waitress knocked this review down to 4 star. We had a delicious meal and great service at Bistro 70. I had the Caesar with shrimp, my husband had the veal Parmesan, mom had the bistro blue salad with chicken, and my dad had the Lenten fish special - perch. We were all very satisfied with the taste and portions. Service was great very friendly and attentive. The chef/owner stopped by our table to ask how our meal was - nice touch! We will be back again. This experience makes me excited to go back to try the other menu offerings which are a nice change from the typical east side Italian pizza burger diner fare that is too common east of the Cuyahoga. My wife and I stopped in at bistro 70 to have dinner Friday evening. We are greeted by a very nice young lady at the host stand and she seated us very promptly. It took few minutes for our server to come and greet us when we get our drink order.My wife's drink came out quickly but mine took awhile. We ordered the specials my wife had the Chilean Seabass and I had the strip steak. Our salads came out what seem to be a long time and our server brought some bread and oil. Two little pieces and I asked her to bring some more three pieces this time. I understand not wanting to waste food but come on. The strip steak was very good and seasoned. The sea bass was very good. The only complaint is really kind of minor but little things like this is what turns me off when I go to a restaurant. Instead of getting the roasted potatoes what came with the steak I asked in its place to have risotto. I was charged more because of the change. If you're going to spend $100.00 on dinner The very least the restaurant can do for you is to exchange your side without charging you extra money As I said the meal was good The service little slow. This was our first visit to Bistro 70. I am glad we decided to go to this hidden gem located in Painesville. We started off the evening with some cocktails. For dinner my wife ordered the Prix Fixe special which was a 3 course meal with different options for each course, which I thought was pretty nice because you can choose what you feel like having for each course. For the first course she chose the Chicken Paprikash soup which I ate and it's was just marvelous. The spatzel was so good, the chicken was very tender, and the soup was seasoned very well. I really enjoyed having that soup so much I can't stop thinking about it. For her second course she chose the meatloaf, which included a side of mashed potatoes and gravy, and asparagus. My wife said that the meatloaf very tasty along with the mashed potatoes and the asparagus. The only negative was the gravy, which was little thin and runny, but all in all, it was a great second course. For desert, she ordered a cinnamon roll, but ended up having it boxed up to take home. I ordered the small plate of Blackened Grouper Bites. OMG, they were phenomenal. The Grouper was so tasty, and flaky. The sauce that came with it was an excellent accompaniment to the Grouper. I would highly recommend this dish, you will not be disappointed. Erica, our server did an excellent job attending to us. She was very friendly and engaging, and very helpful with the menu.
