This place has some vegetarian options which is the main reason I chose to eat here. I ordered the eggplant Parmesan which was delicious, the portion was very large. I also ordered the crepe brûlée which was properly flamed on top and nice and creamy underneath. April was my server and she was kind and attentive. The only minor complaints I have is that the ambience was a bit dark, and the air conditioning was creating a draft at the bar. I recommend eating here if you are visiting Murphy. read more

This establishment is needed for this little town. A place where the phrase "treat yo self" is the motto of this dining experience. I have been here twice and I must say it has been a lovely experience. The place is designed very chic and modern with large booths and tables so bring family and friends. The bar is well stocked and they can make a mean gin and tonic. They play smooth jazz and crooners like Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday making the ambience romantic. The first time I went I had beef bourguignon and it was well done since the beef literally melted in your mouth, it was so soft I could cut it with a spoon! My boyfriend had the scallops and let me tell you-woah. I'm from Miami Florida and I have had my share of sea food but these scallops were THE SOFTEST AND BUTTERY-est I hav ever had!!! They were so good that on my second visit I ordered the shrimp and scallops with papardelle in a sweet tomato sauce. Dear lord what a dish. It was amazing. It was filling and delicious. The noodles were al dente and chewy and so good. I loved it. Ok now the tiny bit of bad. But hey room for improvement right? my beloved ordered The filet mignon with lobster tail. The lobster was short from astounding and nothing too special. The filet mignon, the jewel of meat, was not seasoned. How can you not season this precious piece of beef? It was bland and it broke my heart. Maybe I got it on an off day? It happens right? Regardless I WILL be coming again because it is so good! I ordered the blackened salmon which was served on a bed of rice with 2-3 bites of cut-up carrots and 2 stalks asparagus for $28, which is an expensive meal in Murphy. There were several other occupied tables/booths. The chef seemed to be cooking one table, then another, etc. The server was okay and friendly. It took 45 minutes for the salmon to appear in front of me! It was good, but at that point, dog food would have tasted okay. The chef needs to learn multitasking. I certainly would NOT visit during a busy weekend night. Only way I'll revisit this restaurant would be to arrive mid-morning for a late afternoon lunch . read more

Was in Murphy for business. I always try and find a place that has a good Yelp score to try while out of town. I prefer to try local fare instead of chains. The place is a small, but cozy. I sat at the bar and ordered drinks and food. Bartender was great! I ordered the potato fingerlings for appetizer, they were flavorful, but too much oil. The aioli for dipping was very good. I ordered the fried chicken for the entree. The chicken was okay. I figured in was in NC and the chicken would be traditional fried chicken. This was not. Had a mix of red bell pepper and something sprinkled on top. That was different, but not bad. What I didn't understand was why it was sitting in oil. THAT was the problem. Eating fried chicken is a guilty pleasure.. I don't need mine sitting in extra oil. Mashed potatoes were on the runny side. Was really hoping this would be a gem. If I am in town again I might try something different or just another local restaurant. read more

We have a second home in Murphy and when in town we are always looking for a great restaurant. We have had mixed experiences at Bistro 29 in the past but we heard it was under new ownership so we decided to give it another try. We were a party of seven with reservations for 6:30pm. Our table was ready on time and we ordered drinks (wine bottle, beer) and those arrived in a timely manner. After that the service quickly went downhill. We waited a significant time to order but we were with family so we just enjoyed time together. We finally flagged our waiter down as we were hungry and put in our order. We asked our waiter for bread and he said he would bring it with our soup and salad. Again we waited patiently and finally our soups/salads came. He brought one basket of bread and poured a small plate of the oil/vinegar and he left. There wasn't enough for everyone to have and again we tried flagging our waiter down. Someone in our party eventually got up and got the oil/vinegar himself. We waited and waited for our food and throughout this time our waiter did not check on us to see if we needed water refills (which we did) or if we wanted another bottle of wine or beer. We finally flagged him down and asked what was going on with our food and he stated "your food will be out..........................shortly ". We asked for more bread and water. We did not wait shortly but eventually our food came out. Those who ordered steak and salmon said it was good except for overcooked potatoes. Two of us had scallops and mussels over linguine. It was drowning in an Alfredo sauce and was tasteless. There were three tiny mussels. Just totally disappointing. Someone else in our party returned their chicken Alfredo as it was swimming in a red sauce and not in Alfredo sauce. All I can say our waiter looked completely overwhelmed. No customer service. Came in the restaurant at 6:30 and didn't get our food until 8:15pm. Also, we looked at menu prior to coming and saw they had sushi. Unfortunately when we asked for sushi menu we were told they had "lost" their sushi chef. We really wanted Bistro 29 to be that go-to restaurant in Murphy for great dining. The last time I was here the atmosphere was the highlight. Not much has changed in that regard but the menu and staffing have improved immensely. Our server, Leslie, who just began her employment was attentive without being overbearing. The soup, a fish chowder, was exquisite and the salad served with a spicy ranch and English cucumber was a perfect addition to the main course of pork tenderloin nuggets. The only negatives, and these were not very significant, but more of a personal taste, were the risotto was a bit overcooked and the wine list was not extensive ( no Proseco) but had a wide range of choices. We're visiting from South Florida, and decided to wander into Murphy for dinner! A shop owner recommended Bistro 29, so in we went! We were greeted cheerfully by the hostess and seated immediately without reservations. Our waiter, Mark, was bright, affable, attentive, and delivered beyond great service! He was helpful in describing a hiking trail and giving us natural history information about the area! His food recs were excellent- we ordered the escargot, which were among the best I've had, with flavors of shallots, garlic, maybe herbs de Provence, all in a wine reduction! Our main dishes were the pork chop and salmon, accompanied by perfectly prepared fresh vegetables that included rainbow baby carrots and broccolini! My hubby ordered the Lyonnaise potatoes, he made me taste them, they were scrumptious! Both of our mains were done well! Mark's helpful comments made for a lovely evening that was more than a fantastic meal, but also an interesting and fun experience! We highly recommend Bistro 29, will surely return! read more

Came in with high expectations because of 4 star Yelp rating and recommendations from friends. Unfortunately, e did not have a good experience. One star for the inconsistent food quality and zero stars for the one hour wait time for our entrees. For example, my trout was excellent but the polenta side was cold and the spinach was luke warm. The salads were good. Chicken Parmesan was dried out. Our server really did the best she could with the slow kitchen and bar. After expressing our dissatisfaction with the manager, he explained that the head chef and lead server were out. He did make things right by comping our check and we appreciated that. Since we were there on a friend's recommendation, we may give them another try when we return to Murphy. read more

Went here on a Thursday around 5:00 pm. Not too busy & we were seated right away. Our waitress was delightful and knowledgeable about menu items. The firecracker shrimp was delicious!! After my 3rd visit in just two weeks, I declared Bistro 29 to be the only restaurant worth going to in Murphy. Food quality is amazing and consistent. My 4th visit was on Friday after a movie at the Henn theater. Although the wait staff was the same, we weren't recognized as repeat customers. It would be hard no to remember us as my mother is 82 and always needs assistance getting to and from her table. Regardless. As we sat at our table, we were bothered by several flies which kept flying from our table to the one in front of us. They would land and walk about and then fly onto our person. It was annoying. But then one landed right into my daughters pasta meal and literally had to swim in the sauce to free itself. My daughter freaked out of course and flicked it out. I thought I had trapped it under our sushi tray but it got away. We told our waitress a fly swam in her pasta and she did nothing. Didn't offer to replace it, offer something else, or even discount the meal. Disgusting. I told them Im only paying 1:2 for her meal as she inly ate 1/2. They acted like we were lying to get a free meal. 3 meals with 1 tea was 90.00. Very expensive fly. Manager should have been advised and visit our table to apologize. The food was very good, but a bit pricey. Our waitress was busy and so we didn't experience as good a visit as I was hoping. It took 10 minutes after we were seated to get water and then another few minutes to get our drink order. The waitress never offered the specials of the evening until after we viewed the menu and ordered. I then asked if there were specials. She said she forgot to tell us, but we ended up ordering the cheese board special and it was awesome. The "bread basket" consisted of 2 very small rolls the size of a half dollar -- really! I would return again for drinks and the cheese board, but not another complete dining experience. As busy we they were we felt the 3 people refilling water glasses throughout the experience could of been put to better use. The place itself is lovely and comfortable. Rockefeller chicken Alfredo was DELICIOUS. We also had coconut shrimp which were breaded perfectly with great flavor. And last, but not least we had the beet salad - super fresh and clean flavor with a goat cheese mousse and some type of lemon lavender reduced balsamic glaze. The chefs, Les & Rachel, came out and talked to us - they told us everything (or mostly everything) is local. Kanani was our server - incredibly friendly & helpful. Had dinner here on a Monday night to take advantage of their 2 for $40 menu and give it a try. We use to love going to Shoebooties and eating in their martini bar, but this may be our new favorite. I had a delicious blue cheese pork chop and my husband had a sirloin. Both were very good and my husband raved about the meatball soup. Had to take dessert home as we were to full to eat it! I have three places I like in Murphy. I'm super picky as I'm use to California cuisine that is unique and NOT fried everything. Bistro is chic. Clean. Nice bar and the bartender is on top of his game. The menu choices are delightfully fresh. The sushi is excellent. Quite a few healthy options if that's your thing...and it is my thing. I'm a Caesar salad fanatic and Bistro does it right -- I usually include blackened salmon along with my salad. Perfect!! Anchovies? Yep, if you ask. We've been in Murphy two nights and dined here both of them! I can't recommend it highly enough. We had the dates, duck flautas, gumbo, blue cheese fritters (twice!) and a duck breast special on Christmas Eve. This place is quite pricey for the amount of food you receive. If they have the wild mushroom soup as a special, you really should try it. It is delicious. However, if you are reading the menu and see a rack of lamb, their standard is different from what a rack of lamb actually is. The lambs this place uses, only have four bones and the medallion is tiny. Plan on being hungry after your dinner is complete and hope you can pick food off of your neighbors plate. Yes, foolish me should have asked. I was expecting 7-8 bones for the high price for the meal. They put way too much placenta (polenta) on the plate. This was our second time there. 65.00 for two without drinks is steep considering, I had to find more to eat later. It will be a few more months before I go back and give them another try. read more
