Tupelo, Mississippi....birthplace of Elvis and home of a good BBQ joint, Bishops. I caught Bishop on a night they were out of everything, except what I wanted...ribs! First of all, the rib plate was only $9.99 for 4 ribs and 2 sides. Pretty good value there. The ribs had a very moist and peppery dry rub on them. They were a little dry at the ends but it was close to the end of the day so I let that slide. They have 3 really good BBQ sauces and all are homemade. There is a sweet hickory that has a good mix of honey, pepper, and vinegar to it. A sauce they call jazzy which is sweet and tangy. It tastes similar to Kraft Honey Mustard. And a hot which isn't really hot in my opinion, but has a stronger peppery flavor to it. My 2 sides were potato salad and okra. The potato salad was the baked potato kind made with sour cream. I loooove that style! The fried okra was fried fresh and prepared perfect. The sweet tea didn't taste fresh though. If I'm passing through Tupelo again, I would love to eat at Bishop's again. read more

On a long never ending road trip, my husband and I were about to die of starvation. We pulled the trusty yelp app up and decided to try some BBQ. It didn't disappoint! The portions for the pulled pork sammiches were definitely larger than expected. Enough to put Adam Richman (Man vs Food) to shame. Now let me talk about the most important part. *heavy breathing* The fried pickles were amazing, the baked beans were equally great. But let's talk about the best part: the potato salad. Headed towards ATL and stopped in for dinner based on good reviews. We had two catfish plates, pulled chicken and fried shrimp. I wanted to love it, but found it to just be "okay". The boys gave a thumbs up on the catfish, but my shrimp was over-breaded, so it just fell off when I tried to pick it up. The fries were great, but the Mac and cheese was kind of a glowing orange color. Tasted okay- but the color was so odd. Salad bar was good, and tarter sauce was really good. Friendly service! Makes such a difference - the staff were so nice and welcoming. Food was fresh and delicious. We stopped here on a drive from Memphis to Atlanta. Great little spot off the beaten path. Only issue was that no one seemed to even acknowledge that there's a pandemic going on. In town on business, thought I"d check this place out, it wasn't too far away form where I was working. I consider myself a bit of a bbq snob. Overall the bbq was ok, I had it fairly late in the day (around 6pmish) and I have a feeling if I'd eaten earlier it would've been better. The ribs were "ok". I wanted to try the brisket, but they didn't have just a 2-meat sampler (for shame! They have a four-meat sampler with four sides, but that was a lot more than I needed), so I got a brisket sandwich as well. The brisket was actually really good, wished I'd gotten that as my main entree... The fried pickles did it for me though. One of the best fried pickles I've had anywhere. Super good food. It's what anyone should expect from a good bbq place. Pork, beef, and chicken in a few different dishes. Awesome variety of sides and a pretty sweet little salad bar. They also have several pies. There is a choice of sauces all of which are delicious. Service was nice and the place was clean and simple. I can not express how wonderful this place is. We recently had a friend pass away. I called after hours and an "ANGEL" answered the phone that happened to still be working in the office. She was so kind and helpful. She gladly took care of all of my needs. The staff had my order ALL ready the next day that I came to pick up. It was pouring down rain, and they helped me get everything in the car. Needless to say that BISHOPS has THE BEST FOOD....I do not think that you will go wrong if you decide to stop in. FANTASTIC!!! Being from Texas I have specific BBQ tastes and this place was amazing! My kids each got a pulled pork dog, basically it is pulled pork in a hotdog bun. They each got to choose one side and a drink and it was like $4 each. WAY CHEAP for the portion sizes! My husband and I shared the sampler platter and it came with ribs, brisket, pulled pork and smoked chicken. The amount of food was plentiful and we ended up taking half of it home and the 5 of us ate it for supper that night. The platter also came with a choice of 4 sides, we got the cole slaw (awesome), mac and cheese (great), beans (awesome) and green beans (pretty good). The sweet tea was really good! We couldn't have been happier with this place! They also sell their own BBQ sauce and we picked up some of that to bring home, it made the trip safely and has been used a couple of times already! I went here based on Yelp reviews. It was ok.. Not great. I was surprised at the small portion of meat on the brisket plate. It was tasty and the sauces were very good. The slaw is excellent as were the beans. The fried green tomatoes were hyped by others so I had to give them a try. Very disappointing.. Thick breading and deep fried. The sauce was not a good match with the tomatoes. Just not a lot of flavor! Sorry! I'd go back but would try the chicken. Staff was friendly and helpful! read more

This place is an old school country style BBQ shack. Just inside the front door you'll find the menu hanging over the counter. Just ask what they recommend and go with it...if you've gotten this far you wont be disappointed. Brisket is alright, pork is good and the chicken is great. Three types of sauce on the table and you can buy a take home bottle on the way out.. Try the fried green tomatoes if you like that sort of thing, they're better than most. My family and I went to Bishops and the food was really good. I had the jumbo BBQ Sandwich with fried okra, my wife had the grilled chicken and my daughter had the pulled pork plate. The BBQ was very tender and tasty. The thing I missed was the smokey smell of hickory wood. I am not sure where they smoke the meat. I also ordered the banana pudding which just came out of the oven. The pudding was extremely good. Overall, I would recommend this BBQ restaurant to anyone. read more

REALLY GOOD BBQ! a lot of times you walk into a place and it seems kinda rundown, or maybe just a basic set up and you feel like you would want to turn right around and walk back out... Do not judge this book by its cover, because the BBQ experience here rivals memphis in its level of seriousness! the food also has a subtle charm that reminds you of a homecooked meal. Great BBQ place! I had the sausage sandwich, and it had excellent flavor combined with peppers and onions on top. The Jazzy sauce complemented it well. The front window pronounced that they served fried green tomatoes, and if I could make them as well as this place does, I'd paint it on my front window too. Another in our group had the ribs. They we're fall-off-the-bone tender with a great dry rub. He didn't even add sauce to his. The other in our party had the pulled pork sandwich and a side of fried pickles and declared them both delicious. Their service was horrible. They forgot to tell me that my to go order was ready. So I sat around waiting for 30 minutes. When I finally asked if the food was ready it was behind the counter and lukewarm. No one even bothered to apologize. When I finally got the food, it was so good that I kinda forgave them. A let down after reading the reviews. Instant mashed potatoes, Mac and cheese out of a box and cold French fries. We enjoyed the pulled pork and the iced tea was great. Trip through town just happened by off the interstate. The Brisket had good flavor and was tender. The sides were just ok I had potato salad and black eyed peas . The peas were not seasoned very well and were bland. The ribs were good and tender, the pulled chicken was good along with fried green tomatoes and a one trip salad bar. Plenty to choose from. If you are on a low carb diet great place to come because of meat options and veggie options. But there are some really good fried sides also.
