I placed my to go order with the owner of the restaurant and he was very nice, he told me how long he'd been there and invited me back for the lunch specials they have weekdays. The restaurant decor is pretty typical of any southern small town eatery with deer heads, flags, a few family pics and of course Elvis has to make an appearance every where in Tupelo, MS. I ordered a half slab with sweet potato fries, slaw, potato salad and they gave me some regular fries. The ribs were not as tender as I had hoped for and the sides were ok. Rolling through Tupelo craving BBQ. Jim's had good reviews and photos on previous reviews, so we decided to stop by. Boy it did not disappoint! Betsy and Jim made great recommendations. We got 2 meats & veggies. Pulled pork & 1/4 rack of ribs (one dry & one wet). The fried okra was super as well as the cabbage. Pulled pork was just right and the ribs pulled off the bone. I requested a side of spicy sauce, but the mild was good as well. I prefer spicy. Jim personally came by the table to check and see if everything was up to par. Nice personal touch. There needs to be something unique about an establishment before I will shine that last star on a review and in the case of Bar-B-Q By Jim that uniqueness is the owner's and staff. Once I strolled through the door, I was met by Jim himself with his big size and personality. Coming from the New York City area I always heard of southern hospitality but never understood it until I met Jim. After being greeted by Jim I asked what he would suggest. His response was "everything". Well since that would be impossible, I decided to take a glimpse of the menu. Grilled Sausage & Peppers, Fried Catfish, Pulled Pork, Country Fried Steak, and it went on and on. So, like every yank I picked what I trusted most and settled on a rack of ribs with a side of baked beans and a side of potato salad with Jim's own home-made sweet tea. While sitting waiting for the food this northerner was able to observe the customers and how they all interacted with not only Jim and his wife Barbara but themselves. This place is truly a family-owned operation and everyone I noticed is treated like loved ones. After waiting with anticipation for my ribs Barbara delivered the ribs herself along with a foreign vegetable which I came to learn was fried okra. The visuals of the food along with the aroma of the barbeque sauce was mind blowing. I never experienced ribs like Jim's ribs. I didn't want to wash my hands after I completed my meal. I just wanted to suck on my fingers till there was no more evidence that I devoured the ribs except the naked bones. Now every time I return to Tupelo, I make it a point to visit Bar-B-Q By Jim and expand my horizons while exploring southern barbeque cuisine. PJ read more

Stopped by here on a whim and I'm delighted that I decided to take the chance. The service was great. I had a nice conversation with the "managers" of the place--really friendly people. And the food...excellent. Had a marvelous rack of ribs with some tasty coleslaw on the side and a glass of sweet tea to drink. Honestly, what more could I ask for? I thought the price was more that reasonable for the amount of food I got. The only think I could do without was the TV that was playing--put on some music, hell, some Elvis, or even the local radio station. I had coleslaw added on top of mine. When you ordered the plates, two sides were included. There were numerous choices to pick from. I had sweet potato fries and fried okra, which were both very good. One of the people traveling with me had the onion rings. They were thin sliced, and perfectly prepared. The portion was large enough to share. Their other side was baked beans, also very good. The owner waited on us and was very friendly and efficient. I was in town on business. My client suggested this as a great bbq joint. It's close to the Hilton so within walking distance. The service was excellent with friendly staff. I tried the combo with pulled pork and ribs. Both were good but the ribs were a little tough. The sauces were also good. The baked beans are excellent and I loved the onion rings. We came from out of town to eat here prior to going to a concert at the arena. The staff was so welcoming and friendly. My husband and I both got the pulled pork plate. I always order onion rings wherever I go, and these were thin and crunchy: the best onion rings I have ever had! The pork was tender and delicious. Jim's serves mid to high quality BBQ with traditional sides at a very fair price. The owner is among the nicest people you will meet and they bend over backward for customers. He's also very involved in the community and local charities, including the local Meals on Wheels program. I have had better BBQ, but I've certainly had worse. It's worth your time to visit. I give him 4 stars for 3 star food and 5 star service. Best testimony I know is a former co-worker who has eaten almost every workday lunch at Jim's for decades. read more

Jims is located off the beaten path in a quiet industrial area. The building is smallish but not too small. You order at the counter and their menu is smallish. I was a little sad that they did not have brisket. Our BBQ and fries were a little on the cold side but it might have been because we ordered my son a cheeseburger and they said it would be 15 min. At first site the place looked kinda ghetto, well for big city restaurant standards I guess. But knowing from experience, some shanty looking places are hot spots for some GREAT tasting food! This place is no exception. Super friendly staff, i guess southern hospitality is famous for a reason, and tasty tasty ribs. I had the BBQ baby back ribs (full slab of course), with a side of beans, biscuit and corn. Took about 15 mins for my food to arrive and when it did, it was tasty. For some reason my ribs were slightly cold when i took a bite.... could be that i was sitting directly under a gigantic AC though. I had it warmed up and it was quite possibly the best baby backs i've had. Sweet, tender, and fall off the bone gudnis! The corn kernels were so juicy they exploded on my teeth! the beans were great as well as the sweet tea. God i wish vancouver had sweet tea like they do down here. Such a healthy alternative to pop and a good change from powdered 'iced tea'. If you're unfortunate enough to land in Tupelo (only novelty about this place is it was Elvis's birthplace. We were passing by Tulepo on our way to Alabama and needed a good BBQ place for lunch so we gave Jim's a try. The location is sketchy but the food and service were great! I ate there with a group of 8 who all got something different. We got our food within 5 minutes of ordering and no one had anything bad to say about theirs it was all very good! I had the combo platter with ribs and pulled pork and both were awesome. Very moist and great flavor. Even though the bbq sauce was great there was really no need for it because the flavor stood up on its own. Chicken was the other option with the combo platter and even though i didn't order it i got the chance to try it. There is no way you could go wrong with either choice because the chicken was equally as moist and delicious. The only thing better than the food at this place is the service. The people were awesome and very accommodating and helpful. Definitely worth the stop. read more
