My family members like this place a lot so I decided to check them out. The staff were very nice and helpful when I inquired about the menu items. I ordered the rib tips simply because you don't see them a lot. I also got the fried green tomatoes and the sweet potato casserole that was highly recommended by the staff. As I waited for my food I had a pleasant conversation with another diner, everyone was very welcoming. The restaurant is cozy and comfortable enough to enjoy your meal inside but I got my food to go. The rib tips were almost overcooked, not as tender as I'm used to but still good. The fried tomatoes were fried perfectly and needed a touch of salt at the end. They brought out their bbq sauces and let me know what they were. My food came out fairly quick the sandwich was fine, I used the hot bbq sauce on it. The fried green tomatoes were the low spot on the plate; two were thinner and cooked fine the 3rd was thicker and the batter on the inside was still raw. The absolute star of the plate was the ONION RINGS!!! They were hand battered, not from a bag, and amazing! I could have eaten a whole basket of them! The reason for only 4 stars is the inconsistency...while not a deal breaker, when it's good, it's fabulous...when it wasn't, it was still good, just didn't compare to the previous visit... This is some of the worst BBQ I've ever had. The ribs had the membrane on them, which is a sign of a horrible pit master. The meats were chewy had to be ripped apart and had no flavor. The BBQ beans consisted of stringy fatty chewy beef mixed in bean sauce and the mashed potatoes were just ok. The food didn't seem fresh or of good quality. The restaurant was really dirty, the tables were full of fingerprints and everything was sticky and grimy. There are much better restaurants in Tupelo this location is not worth the trip to the outskirts of town. read more

Unfortunately, at least for me, the food was mediocre. I had the pork tenderloin with fried green tomatoes and coleslaw and while the price was right (that and a drink ran me a penny over eleven dollars), I found the food uninspired and the portions a bit small. They had a salad bar in the middle of the restaurant, but that looked like an afterthought, something to offer someone looking for a more health conscious option. I was in town (with my best friend John) judging a BBQ competition and, as is my habit, asked some of the locals who had the best Q in town. Several places came up repeatedly, among them, Bishops. They have multiple locations, but this review obviously only covers this location. Since we didn't have any history here a sampler platter was ordered. Ribs, pulled pork, brisket, and chicken as meats, and fried green tomatoes, fried okra, cole slaw, and purple peas as sides. The ribs were the best of the lot. Tasty, moist, good pull. Really no downside to them. I'd order them again with a very clear conscience. The chicken was also very most and favorful. Worth getting. Only issue was it was served cold. Would have been a little better if warmed up some. The brisket was both good news and bad. We had 5 slices. Two were tough and dry (may have been sitting out of the juices a while), but the others were delish - good texture, moisture, and taste. If you get this meat take a look before accepting it. Worst was the pulled pork. Had a decent pork taste but it was dry and totally devoid of fat, which is where a lot of the flavor and moisture comes from. Can't recommend this at all. The three sauces were OK. They are so personal you will really need to judge them for yourself. Only one sentence on the sides. All were GREAT. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Spent some time at our table and chatted with us. Almost forgot. Had the homemade banana pudding for dessert. Maybe the best ever. Regardless of what else you get, leave room for this! read more

My girlfriend and a buddy were on a bbq trip and along the way from Atlanta to Memphis we just had to stop for some bbq. Bishop's was well reviewed so we got off to give it a try. The menu looked appetizing enough; our better senses told us to pass on the brisket, so we got pulled pork and ribs, with sides of Mac and cheese, baked beans and fried green tomatoes. The fried green tomatoes turned out to be the best part of the meal. The ribs were over cooked and had that re-heated texture/flavor, the pork was lifeless and not smoky, the Mac n cheese was like easy Mac (cmon guys! If you're gonna do Mac and cheese at least try!), and the beans were mediocre "out of the can"ish. On the plus side, green tomatoes were terrific (nice thick slices and love their batter) and their sauces were good if you enjoy bbq sauce. Service was fine as well. Hate to do it but got to be honest: the Q just wasn't up to par and wasn't fresh. We noticed when we walked to the door (and after we left) that there was no smoke smell nor smoke visible. Several different sauces to pick from. I preferred the hot. All had a nice peppery flavor to them. The plates come with two sides and toast. I got fries and okra, both were good. I'd definitely recommend the pulled chicken plate. One of my guys got a catfish plate and another got a shrimp poboy...both random choices for a BBQ place, but both were pleased with their choices. We were sad as soon as we had our first bite. Sad because we've been driving from Memphis to Alabama two or three times a year for 5 or 6 yeasts without knowing about Bishop's. That ended this weekend. We ordered the brisket sandwich and shrimp poboy, with an appetizer of fried green tomatoes. The only complaint is that we got full before being able to finish the tomatoes off. We're pretty picky about brisket, and this was up there with the best of them. Perfectly smoked, sauce on the table, great tenderness, and excellent flavor. The po boy... amazing. 6 big pieces of shrimp, lettuce, and hand sliced juicy red tomatoes, then a bonus piece of shrimp on each sliced half . They were cooked just right, and the remoulade was out of this world. May be our favorite shrimp po boy on the planet. Finally, the fried green tomatoes. Done right with a corn meal breading and that remoulade. There were maybe 8-10 big slices - way more than expected. On our return trip, we just got them as a side and the 4 we had were plenty. The "gator taters" where a treat for the kid. They are thinly cut spiral chips. We also had the chocolate cake and homemade banana pudding and both were wonderful. The service was very friendly and prompt. I did mention the return trip, right? Of course we stopped on the way back! This time, we weren't hitting right at a meal, so we split the po boy, got a side of Fried Green Tomatoes, and took a pound of brisket for the road. Great local find! I tried this place out based on a friend's recommendation while I was in town. The people were very friendly. Brisket was good, I wish I would have tried all of the sauces, but I didn't. Baked beans are good with the right amount of peppery spiciness... if you don't like spice, you may want to stay away. The only thing I tried that I wasn't a fan of was the cornbread... not sweet and not much taste - this is a personal opinion, as I am used to sweet northern cornbread and from what I am told.. sweet cornbread is not typical in this area. read more

This is absolutely the best BBQ I have had to this day. My friends and I specifically drove through Tupelo because of this place. When we came in after 6 hours of driving through an otherwise quite empty state, we were welcomed by the incredibly gracious hosts. My routine at any BBQ joint is to try the 4 essentials: ribs, pulled pork, brisket and sauces. They did not disappoint. Pulled pork was perfectly shredded and smoked. It had the perfect pink ring and smokey taste that only comes from proper long cooking. The beef ribs slid RIGHT OFF THE BONE and were juicy beyond belief. My absolute favorite was the brisket however. Perfect pink ring around the sides and the aftertaste had this char and emanated the beautiful mix of spices that has been used on the meat. I ate this with their amazing jazzy and spicy bbq sauces which were filled with different consistencies and altogether well-rounded spices. I absolutely loved this place and got this meal for merely $12. A steal for me since I eat in cities most of the time. If I am ever back in Mississippi, I will be here and I will take some to go because I am kicking myself for not getting brisket and pulled pork to go. read more
