Out with Wife N. and our son, we decided to hit a late breakfast on a hazy, sunny winter Saturday. I ordered the Grilled Chicken Sandwich, Biscuits' version of your classic chicken breast on a bun. It was great. Nicely cooked boneless breast on a good quality bun with lettuce, tomato, onions, avocado and bacon. Flavorful, I'd say one of the better chicken breast sandwiches I've had. Wife had their Corned Beef Hash (an item she grew up on, but unfortunately one that most places mess up). We could tell before the first bite that Biscuits' Corned Beef Hash did not come from a can or vat. Freshly-shredded corned beef added into potatoes, served with two poached eggs on top. It wasn't salty (which is nice--there's salt at the table should guests prefer). It was excellent, definitely worth it. I had a side of the soup of the day, clam chowder, which honestly was the only item that needed some work. It was a bit bland, and lacked a few savory and flavor notes which were replaced with salt--salty and simplistic, not memorable. Who can eat at a place called Biscuits without trying a biscuit? Their's are fantastic--as good as any we've made at home from scratch. Their jams are also homemade. First time here for my wife and I. We loved it. The food was amazing. I had the chorizo omelette and my wife had the steak. The steak was cooked perfectly and the chorizo was very good. This is a great spot on the weekends. For whatever reason we end up here on Sunday mornings, the only trick is you must come very early Sunday morning to avoid the masses of people that come on about 10 or 11am. Good is always good basic food, nothing too out of the ordinary but nothing bad at all. If you want basic quality breakfast food fast, this is your spot. My step son wants you to know that they were out of chocolate chips when we went, his favorite here is the chocolate chip pancakes (can you tell?). There is a healthy menu option which is nice. They also refill water and coffee very often and I really appreciate that as I consume coffee like water. If you're in the area and need basic quick breakfast food, try this out! Let me start by saying that I am a biscuit and gravy FIEND, in search of the tastiest biscuits And gravy i can find. Unfortunately, I live in California and finding delectable biscuits and gravy is rare and not something I have come across just yet. My biscuit journey began back in 2008 when I was living in Georgia which has, in my opinion, the best biscuits and gravy (BNG) you will find. Now, on to the review! I have never been to Portland before and thus eating is something that you have to do and when I saw that Portland had a few breakfast/brunch places that are highly rated I figured this would be a great trip. Well, screen door had long wait times and pine state Biscuits had just mediocre biscuits ( read my review on this place for more info) My friend and I were only in Portland for 36 hours or so. On Sunday I, nor my friend, really felt like traveling to Portland just to wait in line for food that seemed to be all hype. I yelped places in the area, tanasbourne, and Biscuits Cafe popped up. With a name like that I figured they'd have great BNG but at only 3 stars I did not have high expectations. Parking was fairly easy, it's a small shopping center so there plenty of parking but at 930AM it was kind of full. We walked into the restaurant and were seated immediately even though there was a fair amount of people here already. After about 7 minutes of looking over the menu our server came and asked for our order. I decided to "keep it simple" and order 1 BNG with 2 egg whites and 2 egg beaters. I love that they have egg white options since I track my food intake and monitor my fats, proteins, and carbs. Sunday's are my high carb days and since I was getting a BNG I opted to leave the whole eggs out but keep the egg whites. Anyways... After roughly 10 minutes our order came out and aesthetically the BNG looked like any other BNG yet the smell, oh the smell, there was something in the gravy I could not identify but I could see it. Some sort of herb; basil, oregano, thyme, something. I stuck my fork in the gravy and gave it the gravy test. Did it just drop through prongs without holding indicating too much water? Or does it have the consistency of jello and shimmy on the fork when you shake it meaning it's too thick? It was quite perfect, actually, although it was a little on the thicker side I was ok with that. I cut a piece of the BNG off and proceeded to taste this wonderfully aromatic creation. That flavor that hugged my tongue and caressed my taste buds was one that I was not accustomed to with my BNG. "Oh my god" we're the first words that came out of my mouth. "That's bomb" my friend said. Whatever extra ingredient they put in to this gravy makes their BNG edge out above the rest. Even the BNG from from Pine State biscuits are not as good. That gravy here is VERY tasty, so much so that I asked the cashier what they put in it, but alas, she did not know. The biscuit itself was fairly average. Not too hard, or too soft, not too buttery, not too flaky, just somewhere in the middle. The gravy itself is what really makes this establishment have outstanding BNG. As we walked to the counter to pay I did notice a tray of Jaochico's sitting out so I'd say they are not made to order but rather to be reheated. Yet together, the biscuit and gravy combo join forces to create heavenly music on your tongue plates by the most talented musicians there are. If you're looking for great BNG try this place. Go ahead, take your chance closer to Portland where lines can be 1HR+. Sure, you'll probably like it because that's what everyone says is good but is it? Trust me, try this place for their BNG, skip the long line and possibly cramped atmosphere and go here because if you don't and you have an OK time at other place, you'll remember this review and think to yourself "Damn, I should have went to biscuit cafe instead" Yeah, you should have. This is a great diner for its area (bearing in mind that it's in a strip mall in the suburbs, and the overall food in this area isn't "new Portland chic" like you'd expect downtown). I came in on New Year's Day with a party of four, and we waited about 10 minutes to be seated during a very busy morning--which is pretty good from an efficiency perspective. However, service was a little chaotic for the meal itself; hence the four, rather than five, star rating. Two people ordered the Florentine Benedict, one ordered the chorizo sausage, and I ordered the kielbasa meal. All of our breakfasts were HUGE, so you're definitely getting a lot of bang for your buck here. The kielbasa was fantastic: salty, nicely charred, and a perfect accompaniment to red potatoes and sunny side up eggs. The chorizo omelette satisfied my father, who is a huge eater, and neither of us even touched our pancake sides! Both Florentine Benedict orderers were happy with their meals--one got red potatoes and the other got huge, aggressively large hash browns that, by the look of them, were probably made in house. Breakfast Review Service - Good Food - Good Atmosphere - Average Biscuits is a great family place for breakfast and if you get there around eight you can typically avoid the families with screaming kids. The service is efficient and friendly so it's easy to get in and out in less than an hour unless there is a long waiting list which can happen on the weekends. We have a standing Saturday morning breakfast with friends and Biscuits is one of three regular places that we eat at so I typically eat there at least once a month and we've never had a bad meal or service. We typically order something with bacon and we all like our bacon on the crisp side. They do on of the best jobs of cooking bacon around. While we are on bacon I have to say that over the last couple of years most restaurants have cheapened their bacon offering and Biscuits has done a good job of still offering a decent slice of bacon. Not as good as the bacon they used to serve but still respectable. I often get the cinnamon french toast. They give you two nice sized slices and it's typically all I can do to eat it all along with the eggs and bacon. Another nice touch is that they give you an individual serving of warm maple syrup. The syrup may not be 100% pure maple syrup but it's thick and has a nice flavor. Typically they do a good job with the eggs. We often order poached eggs and seldom need to send them back because they are over cooked. A lot of places don't serve poached eggs due to the difficulty of cooking them correctly and Biscuits normally hits the mark. Pancakes are light and fluffy but nothing special. If you drink coffee they keep your cup full and if your a tea drinker they refill your tea pot with hot water regularly. Overall a solid breakfast joint. read more

The Good: Fast service. The biscuit and gravy definitely get. Red potatoes are also pretty good. The Not So Good: If you get a side of eggs it will literally just be eggs how you ordered them. You have to add your own salt/pepper/anything else you like on eggs. If you get scrambled they will be tough/rubbery and not fluffy in the least. (Boot Camp had better eggs) If you want the side of sausage, it will NOT be a link like you think but instead, a sausage patty. Which is not as good when you think you're getting some delicious sausages. Ham is not great but not bad. The Bad: While the side of hash browns is large, there is a weird aftertaste. I'm a picky eater so after three attempts to eat it, the aftertaste just did not go away. Kinda chemically? I've never had hash browns that have an aftertaste, it was so weird and inedible. Food is great. But only reason this is a 2 star is because of the cashier'a attitude on Sunday. On a previous Sunday they had food order receipts inside the takeout boxes and talked over the phone to them about it. The manager corrected it and provided a me a refund for the dollar amount for the food cost of the ruined order. Then I went back today and ordered via their website with an eta of being done by 1045-1055. I went inside as noticed that it was the same cashier from the last time and she definitely recognized me. I checked in at 1045 and she mentioned that the order is not done yet since they were finishing up one set of pancakes for my order to be complete. I waited patiently outside as 6 other customers orders who arrived after me were hand delivered to them. It was 1120 when I decided to walk back in and ask about my order. When I got my order I noticed it was sitting on the table for a while. She, the cashier, was honestly being extremely petty and rude. I've been to this cafe twice now, and I've never had a good experience. I wanted to give them a second chance because I know that times are tough right now... I'm wishing that I hadn't wasted the money unfortunately. First experience: I walk up and I see that they are allowing dine in services, but I just wanted to place a to go order. I walk in and there are staff members around the front desk and no other customers standing at the door but no one greets me. I wait patiently but after a few minutes I started to realize that the lady at the desk was avoiding making eye contact with me. So after a while of standing there politely smiling until someone was ready to speak to me, I intervened and asked for a menu. Without looking at me she handed me one, didn't say a word. I quickly saw what I wanted to order and then tried to hand the menu back but again, I was being ignored. Finally a server who came up to close out her tables order at the computer asked me if I had been helped and I said no, I told her what I wanted and uncomfortably joked about how everyone was avoiding my eye contact and not speaking to me. She was really nice and we bonded over how crazy the restaurant business can be sometimes. I've worked in restaurants for years, so I shared that I can understand the difficulty. She (even though it wasn't her responsibility) took my order and as it was time to pay she passed me onto the hostess (who was supposed to be taking care of me from the start). I paid for the order and asked her if I should wait outside for the food to be ready and how long it would take and how I would know when it's ready. She told me she would call out my name outside when the food was ready. So I waiting outside for half an hour even though she quoted me fifteen minutes. I was literally right outside the glass door and windows, never left sight of them. I came in and asked her if it was ready because I've doubled my wait time. She then walked over to the table full of to go orders for delivery and pickup and grabbed one, asked me to repeat my order and I did and she verified my name and I confirmed and she handed me the bag. I was taken aback because considering how rude they were I was still perfectly polite and patient with them. I don't know how long my food was sitting there for. When she handed me the back I said, "you told me you would call me inside when the order was ready..." and she literally scoffed at me and said "hah, I don't remember that." It was so incredibly rude and frankly offensive. I checked to make sure it was still warm before I left and it was so I took the food home. I opened it up and found that the eggs Benedict I ordered was way over cooked. Barely runny yolk. And the tomatoes they applied to the dish weren't even ripe yet, inedible. Poor quality food. Okay it's been a month since then and I thought I would give them another chance. This time I called ahead to place the order and they answered the phone quickly, they were perfectly polite. Probably because it's so much slower now because of the new lockdown. When I got there to pay for it they were also perfectly nice and had no issues with their customer service at all. When I got home and opened the food however.... the eggs may as well have been hard boiled. They were completely cooked through, not a trace of runny egg on the entire dish. I wouldn't even call it an eggs Benedict. I had asked for extra hollandaise sauce and they didn't provide it. It was disappointing. I've concluded that their cooked don't know how to make eggs Benedict at all. I don't think the restraining cards about quality ingredients. Low standards. I don't know of another place nearby that has Benedict's on the menu so I'm sorely out of luck when it comes to my favorite breakfast dish. read more

They're obviously frozen or treated in some kind of salt or chemical brine because the extremely salty/off-taste goes all the way through each potato. Completely inedible. We arrived Thursday, 11:50. No wait time. Greeted at the door. No not really greeted. I asked to sit outside and that there will be 3 of us. I was handed menus and told to pick a table outside and someone would be right out. I picked a table across from the patio door and waited for my daughters, 23 and 26. Same server came out and ask what to drink. "3 waters please". He brought one and when my 2 daughters sat down he asked again. He brought 3 more waters. ??? As we looked at the menus he came to set a ice tea down on our table meant for the on next to us. He seemed confused. In another few minutes he came with 3 cokes to our table...........Now, really!! Are you seriously that oblivious. It was 18 minutes from the time we sat down till someone came to take our order. This was after two other tables, that came in after us, were attended to.. I really started to pay attention then. Our food arrived at 12:37. 47 minutes. My daughter's Fiesta salad, priced over $10 was not much more than ice berg. I don't think she ate half. My younger daughter and I split the California Club and the Almond Crusted French Toast. The club was good. The side salad all ice berg, vinaigrette was not bad. The French toast was 3 stars. As we sat, I watched the man that gave me the menus and brought water, ice tea and cokes. He was cleaning off tables pushing a cart which had a dishpan full of dirty water for silverware. This water was sloshing everywhere, getting on the ground and on his work pants as he throw the silverware in to this bin from two feet away. As he pasts me I felt a splash on my leg. As he came back around our table my daughter got it too. She only mentioned after we got in the car that it actually got in her mouth as she was talking. When I first went to biscuits 5 years ago and they only had one location it quickly became my favorite breakfast spot and even worth driving out of the way for. We went there once a week, the waitress knew our order and that we didn't like lemon in the water. My favorite was always the red potatoes that were perfectly crisp on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. Unfortunately over the years as they expanded both the quality of the food and the service suffered. The new locations lack the cozy atmosphere and hometown feel of the original. That last few times I've went the food was poor (undercooked red potatoes and a "poached" egg that was so over cooked it was actually hard boiled) I would have sent it back but by that time I had waited so long for a table and was so f-ing hungry that I just shut up and ate it anyways. And I guess I can't finish up this review without commenting on the biscuits. For a place called biscuits there is nothing outstanding about them. In fact they taste better smothered in gravy which masks the fact that you could get better biscuits out of a can. If you want a big, fluffy oversized biscuit go to Black Bear Diner.
