In all fairness "one star" has nothing to do with the food or any of the servers... it's all about the guy at the desk.
My wife and I made a reservation for Valentine's day 2017 - 8.15pm. We arrived a little early, I checked-in at the host station, and then waited in a line with other folks waiting on their tables - the restaurant was obviously very busy. The wait went on for just over ten minutes, and that's the maximum I'll wait for any reservation, especially when the hosts are not communicating any delays, or when tables might be ready - there was no communication whatsoever. Now, it's hard to have an enjoyable dining experience when you've already been disappointed, so why stay and likely have your bad mood infect the entire experience? My wife was equally disappointed, and she was the one that actually wanted to pack it up and move on.
So, after the 10 minutes was up, I approached the host station, and said that we were done waiting, and that we were canceling. The host informed us that the table was actually ready and that they would seat us. I declined, and made an insulting remark about how the front-of-the-house obviously didn't know what they were doing, due to the fact that they had a queue for tables - they were behind schedule around 15 minutes - and that they had not checked in with us or anyone toward the back of the line-up, keeping us up-to-date on when tables might be ready, etc.
Now, did I need to make the remark, absolutely not. I was not happy, and it came across. The truly unfortunate thing is that the gentleman at the host station wanted to talk about it. He was not conciliatory, gracious, or any number of well-meaning "let us make this right" mindsets. He was not interested in diffusing the situation at all. He was combative, and arrogant, and even worse, he followed my wife and I out the front door and to the sidewalk, making no apologies, or conciliatory effort to convince us to come back inside - assuming that was his goal. His behavior was strange, bordering on the idea that he genuinely wanted to argue, and intimidate us to return to the restaurant and take our table. If I were capable of being intimidated, I might have gone back inside, or I might have felt threatened - my wife did.. she confessed that she wanted to get as far away from the restaurant as possible after experiencing the man's behavior. She found it absolutely threatening, while I thought he was just a jerk, lacking any decorum, or notion of how to respectfully treat any customer, especially one that is not happy. Also, I was really puzzled. What did he hope to accomplish by following us out of the restaurant and to the sidewalk? Did he think he was escorting us out like a bouncer? Did he think I might become violent - something I gave no indication of? I have no idea what he thought he was actually doing or what he hoped to accomplish. What I do know is that his strange behavior scared my wife.
Unfortunately, this is the second time I have had an issue with the front-of-the-house at this restaurant. Sometime ago, I had made a reservation that I had to cancel. I had made the reservation online, but felt it was proper to call them as soon as the restaurant opened to let them know I was canceling. I did let them know by phone, and interestingly enough, the guy on the other end of the line started scolding me - as if I were a child - for not giving 24hrs notice, and that it was inconsiderate to cancel without such appropriate notice. First off, there is no stated '24hr' cancelation policy noted on their web site - I looked, so if there is one, it's not obvious. Secondly, the guy had no idea why I was canceling - it was because my elderly father needed to unexpectedly go to the hospital. The guy was really just a jerk, and I told him that regardless of how he felt I was canceling then hung up.
Now, I'm sure the food and table service are probably as good as people say, but there are a lot of restaurants in Bellevue, and in Seattle that have top notch service staff that do their job right, from the host desk to the table, communicating effectively with each customer... treating customers with respect, even when dealing with the difficult ones. Those are the restaurants that get my business, and oddly, most of those restaurants are in Seattle, and not in Bellevue, which is unfortunate, because I actually live a short walk from Bis on Main.
It's sad to say at this point, but Bis on Main will never be a place I go to dine.
On an up note, we walked down the street and got a nice table with a great waitress at Monsoon. The food was excellent, and the service was right on point. read more
