What was left of my 3 tender meal... the tenders are MASSIVE
Kristen M.

Wish I had more photos to share but we dug into this way too quickly ! Bird code is definitely a great joint. They just opened and it was completely swamped when my husband went to pick up takeout. He got the Sando sandwich and I got the tenders meal. Both were really good. My one complaint is that I ordered mild and let me just say ... they were HOT. If you're a person who is sensitive to spice I'd just go plain here because I love spice and even I was a little overwhelmed. The Mac and cheese was great. Fries were awesome. We tried their signature sauce and also the honey mustard both were really good. We will be back !

“Comeback sauce and ranch were my favorites, but the honey mustard and tallahassee tang were right up there too.”

This place was very delicious. I was going to get a Mai Tai to start off, but they had a ginger pear cocktail that looked amazing and it was really good. I had the brie appetizer and I thought it would have more brie, but instead it had a fantastic entire garlic clove and brie and another accompaniments. For my entrée, I had the short ribs, with truffle risotto, which was also very good although short ribs are usually a bit too fatty for me. A few people in our group ordered dessert and the crème brûlée looked very good as well. I would definitely come back here next time and town, the waitress and staff were excellent too. My only complaint is a very picky one: to get to the restroom, you have to go into a side hallway of sorts, and it has very bright lighting... kind of ruins the nice and soft lighting in the restaurant, like departing the restaurant kind of. That's the only thing I would recommend fixing maybe.

We were sat at a nice table by the window, but had to wait about 20 minutes for our waiter to come over and put in our drink order. He was incredibly sparse and pretty short with us until we ordered a nice bottle of wine, and immediately he flipped to being much more friendly and attentive. I got the starter chicken and my husband got the ribeye. The starter chicken was good, but the ribeye was burnt to a crisp on the outside and raw on the inside (we ordered medium rare). When we told the waiter about it, he took the steak and brought it back to the kitchen, then returned to tell us that the owner wouldn't make a new one because he said it was "perfectly fine". Our waiter offered to sub for a burger and take the steak off the check. The burger was good, and our waiter also comped us a dessert, but the service and the owner's reaction left a bad taste in our mouths. We won't be rushing back to try again any time soon.

Slow Rhode, little spot open late for food, and hijinx. Foo love hijinx…read more "Antonio, best bartender, how you been my homes?" Foo says. "Hey Foo, good to see you, have a seat." said Antonio. "Menu please?" "Of course. Specials are on the board, what will you have for a drink?" "I'll have a Canadian Club Manhattan." "How about Rittenhouse Foo?" "Sounds good Antonio, best bartender but how about Crown Royal?" "Foo, relax, I'll make you a nice drink," said Antonio. "Hey Antonio," Foo says, "I'll have a cheeseburger, medium, no bacon, fries is okay." As Antonio put down my Manhattan I told him that I was at 22 Bowen's and ran into Chef Eric. Antonio said Eric invented the grind ratios for the Slow Rhode burgers. "Well, Foo believes you best burger in city. Not in state but in city," said Foo. Antonio said, "Who best in state?" Foo, me, the reviewer of the review leaned back in the barstool, looked around the funky ambiance space, and stroked the long scraggly beard Foo tries to grow and said, "I believe best burger is Clarke Cooke House on English muffin with the Gorgonzola." "Really?" "Yes, but one that beats that is Newport Creamery Big Beef patty melt!" "Yo homes, that's a tasty burger," said Antonio. "Righteous!" Foo yelled while giving daps and hugs to Antonio all while jamming a massive stack of grat, all tens, into his pocket and yelling, "My name Foo!" and disturbing the nice people at Slow Rhode. Foo loves Slow Rhode.

The Slow Rhode has been on my radar since stumbling on a pop-up brunch there a few years ago. I've…read morebeen drooling over their social media posts ever since & was thrilled to finally get here. On a busy Saturday night, we were prepared to not find space, but gave it a shot. Luckily, there was a perfect corner of the bar had just opened & we grabbed the seats. The atmosphere was convivial, upbeat & super comfortable, despite the crowd. Service was fabulously friendly & competent - the bartender handling the packed house with ease. We decided to go with an array of small plates to try as much as possible. The menu it designed perfectly for grazing & the prices are super reasonable! The selections are definitely on the comfort-food side with a strong southern hint. Ingredients are often locally sourced - something I greatly admire. We began with the a small plate of Pimento Cheese Toast. Just a few bites each but a nice start. Duck Drumettes. The horseradish-y white sauce was delectable! Even my non-duck loving partner was blown away. I was happy to hear that the salad was available in a half portion - enough for a light fresh break to our heavy selections. Next came a much heavier choice - the gravy fries with duck confit. We left off the cheese, but it wasn't missed at all. These were decadent, delicious & super filling! Next time we'd get a half portion - that would have been plenty! Our final dish was the Shrimp & Grits, but we'd already filled up on the other dishes & ended up asking for this to go. Even reheated, it was a perfectly delicious accompaniment to our brunch the next day! I'd be tempted to order this to-go again for just that purpose. While we didn't imbibe, the cocktail list looked wonderful & the bar was very well stocked. We did enjoy a nice selection from the interesting beer list. The sandwiches that we saw come out looked delicious & huge! We'd love to try them as well. We will be back - this is certainly a new favorite for us!

My husband is really…read moreinto tiki cocktails and has spent a lot of time reading about and making drinks from Smuggler's Cove, Don the Beachcomber, and the classic tiki tradition, so we were excited to see what Newport's tiki bar was doing. Unfortunately, the drinks were a pretty big disappointment. We asked for an original/classic Mai Tai, rather than the restaurant's interpretation or a modern spin. What we received was essentially just a glass of rum. There was very little citrus or almond/orgeat character coming through. A classic Mai Tai should have a much more balanced combination of rum, citrus, and orgeat, and the drink we received didn't come close. I also asked if they could make a Saturn. They said they could, although they couldn't make it frozen--which isn't actually an issue since a classic Saturn doesn't need to be frozen. The drink tasted fine, but it didn't really taste like a Saturn. The service itself was nice, and the staff did try to accommodate our requests, so this isn't a complaint about the people working there. That said, if a bar can't confidently execute a classic cocktail, I'd honestly rather they say so and recommend something from their menu than serve something that doesn't resemble the drink being requested. That's ultimately what left us disappointed. We weren't expecting every drink to be historically perfect, and there's absolutely room for creative tiki riffs. But if you're going to call yourself a Tiki Bar, being able to execute at least some of the foundational classics seems pretty important. The waterfront location is fun, and if you're simply looking for a fruity tropical cocktail while wandering around Newport, this might be your spot. But for someone genuinely interested in tiki cocktails, this felt more like a tourist-friendly waterfront bar serving tropical drinks than an authentic tiki bar with a serious cocktail program.

We started with the calamari, which was completely drenched in a very sweet sauce. I would have much preferred the sauce on the side, especially since there wasn't an option or question about how we wanted it served. The coconut shrimp was similar--it came sitting in a bed of sweet chili sauce, making the whole dish much sweeter than we expected. We also ordered the salmon with risotto. The salmon itself was seasoned well, but it was overcooked and quite dry. The risotto was probably the biggest disappointment. It tasted like plain rice mixed with Parmesan, with very little seasoning or flavor. There were a few pieces of asparagus placed on top; I think chopping and incorporating the asparagus into the risotto would have made the dish much better. My daughter ordered the clam chowder, but unfortunately the clams were surprisingly chewy and the soup itself seemed to lack seasoning. For my entrée, I went with our server's recommendation: stuffed shrimp with lobster and clams in a sauce, topped with cornbread. Unfortunately, the cornbread topping was extremely sweet and overwhelmed the seafood. My baked potato also came with only sour cream on the side, and it would have been nice to have other traditional toppings available. The only dish we really enjoyed was the salmon enough to share among us, along with some of the coconut shrimp. Most of the other food was tasted once or twice and left on the plates. At the end of the meal, the server asked us if we wanted to pack it all and we said no thank you , we did explain that we found many of the sauces and dishes overwhelmingly sweet and that most of the food had gone uneaten. I wasn't necessarily expecting anything to be taken off the bill as I made these comments after I paid , but I was surprised that neither the server nor a manager really acknowledged the feedback or asked any further questions. Overall, for a seafood dinner on the pier costing $200, I expected much better execution, seasoning, and attention to the fact that so much of the meal was left untouched. Unfortunately, this was not an experience I would repeat. My drink on the other hand was delicious and highly recommend the smoky Sidecar!
