First time here, dropped by on a beautiful Saturday morning on the recommendation of a friend and it was as wonderful as she described. Great ambiance with a live band playing when I was there and the food and service were fantastic (as could be told by the line for orders, I would suggest coming here before noon or after 1 or you might have a bit of a wait). What an amazing find in Worcester! The food is absolutely amazing and has a homey vibe! You can get water in Mason jars for free which is very nice. The prices are fair. There's an antique shop next door that you can also explore. I highly recommend this place! read more

I love this place. Another excellent new(ish) place in Worcester that is bound to be very successful. I would have rated 5 star but it took over 30 mins to bring my gazpacho and sandwich. It was quick once I asked behind the counter. Gazpacho was excellent. Sandwich was ok. Well made, I just didn't care for it. They seemed short staffed. I ordered the savory bread pudding which at this time consisted of cornbeef hash with Dijon mustard dressing ( which was off the charts) Served with a side salad which was light and flavorful ( I need the recipe for that dressing). A tasty gem in the heart to Worcester. We stopped by on a Sunday morning out of curiosity and were pleasantly surprised by the Birchtree Bread Company. The building is cool, the people are cool, there was music playing, and most importantly, the food is amazing. I had the creamy vegetable polenta soup and the beet salad - if it were socially acceptable to lick dishes in public, I would have. My husband had the ham and cheese croissant sandwich and he enjoyed it as well. We took a loaf of the herb olive bread and a croissant to go. We will definitely be back! read more

What a horrible way to spend my Sunday. I read on yelp before coming that this was a great place to do homework- FALSE. My 2 friends and I got there and ordered toast and coffee which was good, but we were less than impressed with the small portion size. It was crowded, but we waited patiently for a table. After sitting for just 20 minutes and barley finishing our food, the female manager approached us out of nowhere and demanded that we give up our table in order to accommodate another party. She claimed that she would help find us a seat at the bar so, despite the inconvenience, we willingly packed up, but then the manager was no where to be found and there was no seats at the bar. Thus we were left standing and waiting uncomfortably AGAIN for another table. We finally got seated and worked for about an hour and were planning on buying more food (a thin sliver of toast does not fill you up). Then the same owner approached us for the second time, and once more demanded that we give up our own table so that another customer would not have to wait for one. She claimed that she needed to "make room for paying costumers." Interesting....I thought WE WERE PAYING COSTUMERS. My friends and I felt very uncomfortable, and expressed this to the manager, however, she dismissed us and walked away. We felt we were targeted based on our age. There were many other groups that had been seated for an extended amount of time, yet she did not request that any other group give up their seat. To make matters worse, since we had to leave unexpectedly we had no choice but to walk home 3 miles in the pouring rain. The Birchtree management clearly does not respect the college population of Worcester. If you are a college student, do not go to Birch Tree. read more

We had lunch and brought a loaf of bread to take home. The ham and cheese croissant that I ordered was very good and my husband enjoyed his sandwich, but the bread was out of this world (raisin and coriander). I think it was the best bread I've ever had in my life - and I spend time in Paris every year! The café is flooded with light and the atmosphere was great. Went for lunch today with a friend. Waited over 15 min. in line then waited 30 min. for two sandwiches. It'a a lovely looking place but they had a band playing in the corner that was so loud my table was vibrating as were my ears. Not pleasent. Everyone was leaning in to try and talk. The bread is good the sandwiches nothing to write home about. I would only go back to buy a loaf of bread or pastry and leave. Too bad Worcester need a place where people can gather. I'm obsessed with this place! It's the perfect stop if you want to switch up the traditional breakfast food you get at any of the countless diners in Worcester. My favorites are the toast with whipped feta and EVOO and their breakfast sandwich (which they serve until 11 am, I know because I'm always bummed when I miss it). Went there for Sunday brunch. They don't have a brunch. Rock orchestra playing too loud. We could not have a conversation across the table. We asked them to tone down but it did not help. The food was not up to snuff. The winter squash spinach salad: The spinach leaves' stems was brown at the end and they did not bother to trim the tips. The sandwiches are made with very coarse, yeasty bread with thick dark almost burnt crust. A workout to chew. Very organic, but no parisian baguette. Just coarse ordinary organic stuff. Our order took forever to arrive. Interesting selection of teas but not worth the trip. read more

Folks, aside from the line (and they do their best with it), there is absolutely nothing not to like about this place. From the salt of the earth owners to the staff to the terrific space and... oh yeah! The BREAD. They have truly hit their stride a year in with the bread. Not a single miss on any visit and the Coriander Raisin, Local Wheat, Rye (Saturdays along with bacon brioche rolls), and Challah? STELLAR. Great crust and flavor -- everything a bread should be and I happily consider myself a bread snob warped by nurture. (Okay carb haters there are salads and stuff for you and they are good. There's some homemade peanut butter, which is low in carbs too. But why are you even in here?) There's a killer breakfast sandwich with BT Smokehouse meat (none better) and the genius of the toasts is a great way to have an inexpensive breakfast and tray all the breads. The peanut butter on the coriander raisin is my fave but explore them all. Just terrific. read more
