Big pine Rooster is a great spot to grab some really good grub! This year we went for breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was decent and dinner wasn't bad either. One of their best dishes is their Mozzarella Planks and the wings are really good. I had the Bang Bang grouper tacos which were good but not as good as the first time I had them. We had a late lunch yesterday. We ordered the appetizer of conch fritters. The flavor was good but I found it a little chewy and gummy for my taste. I ordered the fire seared whiskey chicken sandwich. It was okay. I was dunking the sandwich in honey mustard to give it a bit more flavor. The french fries were huge! I ended up taking half the sandwich and the majority of my French fries home as a doggy bag. Our waitress was excellent! The guy who sat us down was a little rude he just threw the menu at me onto the table. I really really really wanted this place to be great. I wish I could give it better than a "meh". The inside is cute but very small and the food was typical bar food. I got a Portabella "Panini" which was very soggy and flavorless. My Husband enjoyed the burrito but it was nothing to write home about. Our food came well before our kids' food came which is of course, not cool, but hopefully just a growing pain. I might try this restaurant again after they've had some time to adjust but I'm certainly not in any hurry to do so. read more

We had a great lunch here. The waitress was so cute. When my husband said he thought he would order vegetarian pasta, she convinced him the hogfish sandwich was a better choice. I ordered the bang bang grouper tacos. Everything was delish and the food was delivered quickly and hot. They have a collection of boating mishaps looping on one of the TVs over the bar. OMG, the raisin-walnut bread alone is worth going! I think i'll get that next time, with an egg on the side... Nice selection of breakfast eggs, waffles and pancakes. The blueberries in the pancakes were likely frozen due to the time of year - they were tiny, but the pancakes themself were fantastic and everyone extended a fork that direction. The eggs benedict and other dishes were generous and really fresh, served on Fiestaware-style plates. Very colorful, cozy and fun breakfast atmosphere. The only negative would be the wait. The restaurant was busy but not 100% packed and I felt getting the food and the check both took double what they should have. A waitress roaming with coffee was efficient though so at least we didn't wait with empty mugs. The gravel lot offers plenty of parking, and there is also a bar if you want to belly up and eat by yourself (2 tv's at the bar - FOX news :( and a sports channel, but distraction there for those who want it). Prices: A bit higher than normal. About 2 more for breakfast entrees than you'd pay at a diner, but they have you trapped with limited options in this part of the keys. Split a meal if you're trying to save a buck and you'll likely have plenty still. read more

Nice to finally visit the newly opened restaurant. I had lunch with my friend. It was nice to see the new look inside!! Fresh and clean looking place inside. The menu is monstrous. I don't know how many items they have, I was too tired to count. Pages, several.... I had a chicken Parmesan sub with fries and potato salad. My friend tried the open faced roast beef. We were both happy with our selection and everything came as ordered. The portions were large and presented well. 4 vs 5 stars. I would have went 3.75 if u could have. The chicken on the sandwich hadn't been beat down or tenderized. It was a rather thick chunk of breast. The chicken and its breading lacked slightly in flavor. Perhaps beat the chicken with a mallet or slice thinner and add some nice Italian seasonings to the breading. Sorry but I could never give a 5 star review without a nice fresh cut French fry option. The service was a little slow but I was busy and it didn't look like they were fully staffed but I totally understand that having been a server for 8 years. We are locals and walked in to give it a shot after not having a good experience over 1 year ago. It was on a day that didn't seem busy to us. We were not greeted and saw numerous tables that were not cleared yet. We sat for nearly 10 minutes without any acknowledgement whatsoever. I have been in hospitality for over 20 years if my staff were to take this approach they would no longer be employed. Maybe it's an off day and they are short handed as is every other business in the area, but to not acknowledge us as we walked in is the thing that gets me the most. How does one ask to speak to a manager when your waitress is hiding from the tables? This place was great about five owners and name changes ago. They were willing to swap out black beans for the fries but she loved the French fries as well. Cole slaw-not my thing but ok I got this enormous Buffalo chicken finger salad that was gigantic as well with Field greens grape tomatoes cukes and a pile of fresh fruit to boot. Fantastic! Came in for dinner a few weeks ago; excellent service and delicious food (HUGE portions!) Came in for lunch today and experience was very different. Place was very packed and there were only 2 waiters, so it took a long time for them to take our order and even longer for our food to get to our table. I'm a local (born and raised) and had not visited this establishment since it changed hands a few years ago. After attending church in big pine key I decided to give it a try. Walked into the front door and was greeted by a lady with braids behind the bar, very nice and friendly and said it would be a few minutes for a table. There were many empty tables most of which were dirty and had not been bussed. I noticed that the only waitress in the restaurant was not only busing tables, serving food, but also hosting. I waited for a table for roughly 10 minutes with my two-year-old son who is very close to his nap. Once we were seated I promptly placed my order and also ordered a glass of wine. Almost 15 minutes into my wait I still had not received my drink and my son was becoming very restless. A very young girl who was bringing food from the kitchen walked by my table and was gracious enough to bring me the wine. She stated my food would also be ready shortly. I waited another 25 minutes until I noticed the table adjacent to me, who had been sat 10 minutes earlier, had just received their food. I got up and went to the bar to pay for my glass of wine and was ready to leave without my order. The waitress who was very apologetic asked for the lady with the braids to come over and confirm that I was leaving. The woman who was very friendly initially and greeted me when I arrived was now very abrupt, cold, and in no way apologetic at the fact that I had waited 40 minutes for a pancake and a spinach salad. Though I love to frequent and support local businesses I definitely will not be back. On a sidenote, while waiting for our food the window sill next to our table was full of dust and termite wings. Some thing that was very difficult to keep my son from touching while waiting for our food. That in addition to the poor service are reasons I will not return. read more

Loved this place when it first opened..... new menu which we understand is because of new ownership..... will adjust review from 5 star with great value and tasty food to one that is pending and give time for changes to menu and management to hopefully get it back to where it was. We visit this place every year while in town. The first year I had breakfast, last year we had lunch, and this year we went back for breakfast. To our finding it is under new ownership, so breakfast is so limited. It is a buffet plus a few things you can order. We opted to wait about 30 minutes until they served lunch at 10:30. We started with the mozzarella sticks which are made in the restaurant and very good. I had the seafood pasta, which has tons of seafood and the sauce on it is amazing. Another person had the lobster Rueben , which was good. Another had the grouper sandwich which they said was great. Overall come to try this place out during lunch or dinner , servings are plentiful, so you won't go away hungry! read more

This used to be one of my favorite places to eat, but they have new owners and it's obvious that they switched food vendors. The meat used to be prime and choice cuts now they are standard cutter cuts of meat. They are getting cheaper cuts of meat and charging more for them. Very disappointing. Driving back from Key West we needed a breakfast stop and found this place on yelp. The portions are enormous!!! I had the sunshine French toast with pineapple, coconut, and banana. It was fantastic! We were here twice during a month long stay on the Big Pine Key area. The food was great both times. I recommend the Shrimp and scallop salad, and Bang bang shrimp . My hubby had the Mahi Reuben and it was just ok. The beer is cold and the service is adequate. Both times I got the feeling that they were understaffed on the floor. They were pleasant and did the best , given that it seemed one person was serving most of the restaurant. It is pretty small and the tables are very close together. This place has really good food, but it is so inconsistent. When the food is prepared right it's A+, but here lately it's not work the money. I ordered a meat lovers pizza last week that I generally love, but this time they had chopped up meatloaf on it. The dough was not cooked. The pizza was cold. I was drunk so I ate it, but come on man. I eat here often as it's with in walking distance: but I'm almost to the point of being done with this place. Some times the biscuits and gravy are the best. Other times they gravy is filled with grease and the biscuits are stale. I use to go here for breakfast, now I drive to the gallery grill.
