I have seen others' ratings, but wanted to say my experience from my first call to driving away was very good. At the Berkeley store, Marvin was very helpful in selecting tires over the phone and making the order and appointment. A very reasonable price for a national brand, and better than my comparison shopping. I will say that I was not thrilled with having to put down a $100 deposit to get the tires delivered to the store - I can't imagine they have every tire in stock, and it seems having a between-store delivery was common. But I'm sure there are deadbeats out there who don't show. So no prob, the appointment was kept on time, and I drove out with some nice tires with no hassle. Thanks, guys! read more

tl:dr if you come here for an oil change, make sure they change your filter too. I wish I could rate this location better. The service at this location was pretty good. Calling them does take a while for someone to pick up, but when you are there, they treat you with respect. I came in at 10am for an oil change on a Sunday. I was next in line and they were done with my oil change my 10:30, but the cashier was busy so didn't call my name. I saw that they finished with my car so I went and stood in line and could have been out of there by 10:40 BUT there was a problem. I checked under my hood and found that they did not change my oil filter. UGH this is why people say to change your own oil! I went in and told them that I don't think they changed it. The cashier came out, looked at it, and agreed with me. They immediately changed the filter and apologized. The technician said that sometimes he just cant find the filter so he doesn't change it, but many people expect that they would change the filter since they say they do and charge you for it! I also don't think they did the chassis lubrication and everything else they said they'd do, but I'm okay with that. read more

Chose new tires and made apointment on Friday for new tires on Monday. Got confitmation of apointment. Went to apointment. They did not have the tires. Told me they take 5 days to get and becuase I had not answered their phone call they had never ordered them. Of course since I made the apointment only 3 days ago even if I had spoken with them they wouldn't have been able to honor their apointment anyway. What's the point of confirming an apointment if they don't actually plan on providing services? Person I interacted with was super unhelpful, and tried to sell me some other tires I didn't want. Very aggressivly told me it was my fault but did eventually "apologize" and promise to "talk with the guys." Would not recommend. read more

Unbelievably bad experience here. I brought my car in for new tires. My brakes had started squeaking earlier that week so I asked them to check them out. I dropped my car off in the morning and went back to work. After a few hours I get a call and am quoted a repair of around $1200. My brakes had just started squeaking, yet they wanted to charge me to replace front and back brake pads, front and back rotors, and the drum kit in the back. I knew it was a bad quote and told them not to make the repairs and that I'd be getting a second opinion. After a couple of hours I get another call from them stating that I wouldn't be "allowed" to drive my car off the lot. They claimed that it was dangerous and that I would have to get it towed. I go back to the shop with the intention of calling the police if need be. Thankfully my insurance covered the cost of the tow and I get my car moved to another, more reputable shop. Low and behold, the quote was complete bullshit. I only needed new front brake pads and the repair was made quickly and at a fraction of the cost. Unbelievable. Took my car here for a simple repair and nearly had to get the police involved. Go literally anywhere else. read more

I took my car into Big O Tires for a leaky ATF cooler line on sat with an appointment. I took off work just to get there. They looked at it on monday! Ordered parts, witch they had a hard time fitting with some issues. On thursday I picked up my car, i drove away and onto the freeway. Five minutes later the cars trans began to slip..I pulled over on the side of the freeway and found a massive slick of ATF fluid behind my car..I opened the hood to find the fluid had sprayed all over the lower engine bay witch had caused a fire on the left (pass side) firewall. Before emergency services had arrived my car had burned to the ground. I went back to the shop and waited for any help..I.was told that they would not help..I contacted their corporate offices and filed a claim..they sent me back to the shop. I finally managed to talk to the owner (I belived) and was told that it was "my cars fault" and he would not contact his insurance provider untill the BAR contacted them. Meanwhile, I have no car and no ability to work and no more income because of this. read more

Had an overpriced front brake job done and within 509 miles the new rotors warped. Obviously cheaply made and overpriced. During a recent new tire installation the "curtesy" inspection indicated numerous front ent control rod and cv boot cracks. They additionally recommended the coolant system hoses were worn and needed replacement. I took my vehicle to an independent highly rated mechanic shop and none of the issues BigO stated were accurate. In fact I had the entire suspension system completely replaced only several thousand miles prior (and last) to my BigO visit. I should have learned the lesson on the brake job. read more

this review is from early 2019. I was too angry in 2019 to write this. I realize things change and it's been over a year so hopefully this isn't the standard at this shop anymore. I waited to write this because my fury has settled and I can be cogent now. 1st visit: My initial tire rotation experience was fine. I dropped my car off at 3pm mid week to have the tires rotated, it was done by 5pm. Customer service was fine, prompt, courteous. $20 to rotate the tires sounds fine to me. 1st phone call: I notice they've returned my key without the micro lock carabiner that exists so I can connect the car key to my other keys. I called the next day, "have you seen this thing? It locks onto the key loop, it would have taken _actual labor_ to remove it." No one's seen it...I'm mildly annoyed. 2nd phone call: My tire warning light comes on. I called. Someone called William identifies himself as the manager. Says bring in the car. 2nd visit: I watched him as the beeping electronic thing registered different results on all four tires and he had to do it two times before he decided I'd need to replace one of the sensors in the tire. Sensors just break, he claims, it wasn't the technicians fault that it got broken, they just die...and you have to replace them. They insist it's a coincidence that it's broken now immediately after they rotated my tires. So fine, I agree to replace it. An aside: He also said to me "it doesn't really matter, if you don't want to replace it you don't really have to... you can just drive with the light on, it's just an indicator light"...seriously? That's your advice at a tire shop? They order the part because I'm told that is my only real solution. 3rd visit: They replace the part and the whole thing costs about $120 including labor. I drive off the lot, and the next day the tire indicator light comes on again. 3rd phone call: I call, hey my sensor light is back on and you just replaced it. oh, it's probably the sensor in a different one of my four tires...oh it's probably coincidentally also broken now, they ask if I can come in right now. No, I have work. Tomorrow? Sure, I feel like I have no choice... this is getting pretty exhausting. 4th visit. They do the little beepy electronic thing with a tool designed to register the sensors. The one that was allegedly just replaced now doesn't exist. It's not registering. Oh. Maybe we put in a bad one...sometimes that happens. We'll order a new one, but according to the beepy tool, it looks like maybe a second one is bad too. I'm told that another one is failing and I'll need to replace that for $120. This is getting really expensive for a tire rotation. I decide to get a second opinion. I drive off the lot with my indicator light still crying wolf... 1st visit to my regular mechanic: I call my mechanic. His assistant says "well, we closed 15 minutes ago but just bring it by real quick and I'll check the sensors with my beepy electronic tool. His tool registers that the allegedly replaced sensor isn't working. I think I've been scammed. Then his tool registers it as working and another as not working. We create a video so I can go back to the guy who talks over me and insists that I'm wrong and my only recourse is to buy another part, or drive with the light on because it doesn't really matter. I can't tell if I'm being scammed, or what's happening. I'm bewildered and I don't want to go back to these people but they've f---ed up my sensors now, and I just paid to get it to work and it still doesn't work. 5th visit. I get the real manager. Oh, you're the manager...not that other guy who is also named William? okay... um...I'm super pissed. My mechanic's assistant shows up on his motorcycle to back me up...to tell him what his tool registered because men can talk to men?? He knows from my story that this tech is just gonna ignore what I say and insist I can only pay to replace the part. And I keep getting steamrolled by other William (the one who is not actually the manager), while he just says my only option is replace the sensor. Manager uses the tool at Big-O and confirms what my mechanic established. Says he's sorry. This is the first he's heard about my issue. I leave with the light still on. My mechanic recommends I take it to Orozco Tire right across the street from Big-O. It's a family owned and run tire shop with very efficient fast in and out honest straightforward service. They check my sensors, reset the indicator light in the system, drive it around the block to reset the sensor, and the light goes off. Easy peasy. I've returned to Orozco and they are amazing. I recommend them highly. Immediately across the street from Big-O. It's a small inconspicuous place. read more

When I showed up at the store even 10 minutes before my appointment, the front desk person (Steven) told me that they don't accept appointment for tire repair and I have to wait two hours to get this done. He seems like doesn't like what he does and has no respect for customer's time. Second time coming to this Big O and this location is full of hardworking individuals . Great customer service and great attitudes to be in a hot garage all day . Here is just a quick run down of today's visit ! ARRIVAL: Upon arrival staff was very cheerful, the environment was exactly what it's suppose to be (automotive shop) but clean . They have a display of their premium tires and even a gallery type wall that shows certain things like , tire traction and it's effects on our driving, what tires are good for certain terrain . Very informative and educational for someone who knows little to nothing about cars . THE WAIT: The wait was a little long but I'm not sure if the cashier forgot to call my name but the last time we came (a week ago) they were fairly fast . The lobby is what you expect when you come to an automotive shop -A Small TV -coffee machine -several seats (cushioned/soft) -Last but not least the vending machines PICKING UP MY CAR : The process to check my car out was fairly easy , once called it took roughly 3 mins to finish the rest of the process. My one gripe would be their deal with Groupon , I bought an oil change for a set price on Groupon however when I showed the voucher I had to pay an additional 9 dollars , no big deal but it's kind of confusing because when you purchase services by Groupon it usually states extra charges but this one does not . They said my tire was leaking from the rim and that they changed the valve. Told me if that didn't work I would likely need to spend a 1000 to change my rims because it may be cracked. I went to another small shop in east Oakland on 35th. They changed the valve body for 20 bucks and no more air leak. I didn't know the difference between the valve and the valve body Big O basically did nothing and were setting me up to take my money. Maybe the workers knew they could keep my old rims? Really disappointed in this place / I've been coming here for 4 years and have been about 8 times. Today however was the worst experience of my life. I came in for a wheel alignment, $109, 2 hours later I go to pick it up and drive away and it's not fixed at all. I come back to inquire - they take it back in and then say oh it's can't be fixed because it's my tires? First they say then will refund me but then they say they can't. Total scam. Let me drive away and pay without fixing problem and then wouldn't even refund me. They were so heartless, I'm a young female student I can't afford these kinds of lies. Big O Tires in Berkeley, CA: I bought 4 new tires here about 2-3 years ago. They offer free rotations and tire repair with the purchase. Since my purchase, I called and stopped by on THREE separate occasions for rotations, only to be told to leave my vehicle and it would be ready at the end of the day. My vehicle is used for work. I can't leave it somewhere for a whole day. Why not allow your customers the opportunity to make an appointment, especially when they spent 1K for new tires? Or maybe allot or block out an hour each day for free rotations or tire repair for customers that purchased tires at your store. Offering something at no charge and then making it super inconvenient to take advantage of the offer looks bad. I stopped by today again for a rotation and tire repair. I was told to leave my vehicle and it would be ready in two hours at no charge. I dropped my vehicle and found a ride home. I get a call about 2 hours later letting me know that my tire tread is too low, one tire has uneven tread wear, and as a result, they can not rotate the tires and they can not fix my slow leak. The tires tread is low, but not to the point of NEEDING replacement. They recommended I purchase new tires. How about inspecting the tires when I drop the vehicle and communicating this information to me prior to my having to find two rides to/from your shop??!?!? This looks like a money grab at the least and horrible customer service at best. You may not care much, but Big O Tires will never get my business again. read more

DONT WASTE YOUR TIME! I got a groupon about a month ago to get my oil changed - upon leaving the place I noticed that both sides of my car have dents - these dents where never there prior to this oil change. Almost like a machine grabbed my car by either sides leaving deep dents on either side. I called them the next day and was told by someone called "Early" that he would check the camera footage and get back to me on the issue and of course he never called me back and has also been screening my calls and avoiding me. I've gone here for years, they were my neighborhood tire shop but I won't be going back. Their service has definitely changed from the kind and pleasant shop that was so helpful for a single mom to work with. Recently I had 2 rude discussions there and I feel like the culture of the place has changed. They used to take pleasure in talking to customers and this worker seemed to hate me for no reason, barked his comments at me and told me "we don't have to discuss it!" when I was trying to understand what he was saying about my tires. Perhaps they have too much work and don't need my business. There are definitely cheaper shops and we have a lot to choose from in West Berkeley. If you need tires, or alignment go to Big-O tires and ask for Early. I have an 8 year old minivan, got new tires and needed an alignment. I called Early, he gave me a quote and set the appointment. Car gets dropped off, immediately driven into the bay and work started. Work done in less time than I expected and Early gave me great advice about how to keep the car in alignment. I walked in to see a guy on his phone and he looked up and saw me and then continued using his phone. He asked me "how can I help you?" with his face still looking down at his phone which is a big no-no (shame on you Chico, you should know better). I explained my problem and was quoted a wait time of 2-3 hours, yikes! 3 hours to see if it can be patched? Rough. It's been 2 hours and my car is still in the same place I parked it. Never had worst service in any vehicle place ever. I took my car in for rebalancing and rotating tires. I called in advance and they said come right down they had availability. I come down there and instantly he tells me it's going to be three hours. And I'm leaving in four hours to go on a trip with this car. So I leave my car anyways. I call at about 3 1/2 hours and he says it's not even been looked at yet. So I have to leave the car with them for the entire weekend. I get a call late in the day when I'm in the mountains telling me my car is done. So I come back three days later drive-in and find my car has not been serviced. I play the message for them and they shrug like this happens all the time. They claim I need new front tires And therefore they won't do the work. The front tires have some wear but they are no place near unsafe and still have about a half inch of tread. They are trying to upsell me on tires rather than make this rights So three days after dropping it , my car is unserviced and nobody left me a voicemail telling me any of this. I also found my car an an open lot on the street front completely unlocked. Find tire services elsewhere. I did. Two blocks away at Orozco's tire they rotated my tires in 1/2 hour. read more

*Use the yelp deal!* If you call ahead to make an appointment, they might just give you the discount right then & there without having to go through yelp. I wanted a car alignment and got a $100 alignment for $50! No place has car alignments that cheap unless they were doing something shady. I had the greatest customer service from Ramon & Will, who scheduled the appointment and honored the discount. I scheduled it for 3:30pm on a rainy Thursday. My car was ready to go by 4:40ish pm. Another great part of this location is that it's not isolated from great nearby shops. I ended up hanging out at Far Tea Leaves, another great business (stay tuned for my review). They suggested to replace my tires but I wasn't pressured to have them replaced at Big Ol' Tires, which was nice. They even said to drive safely in the rain. read more

I had bad customer service interactions two days in a row during mid-July at this Big O, both with front desk staffer named Will. On Day 1, he said a repair (replacing two tires) would take about 1.5 hours, but it actually took 3.5 hours. It was particularly crummy because I made the mistake of staying in their waiting room. I needed a repair on our other car. Will suggested I make an appointment, and said that would make it go faster. On Day 2, I showed up at my appointment time (9am) to get two tire pressure sensors replaced. Will said it would take 30-45 minutes to diagnose and 30 minutes to do the repair. I'd learned my lesson from Day 1, so I ran errands in the neighborhood and then went to a nearby coffee shop to wait. At 10:15, I called to check on the status and got a diagnosis and an attempt to upsell me. No problem on trying to upsell -- I said what I wanted, and he said it would take another 30-60 minutes. At 11:40 (plus over 5 minutes on hold), I called back to find out what was happening. Will said they were just getting to it, and it would be another hour. I complained and asked if I could trust that timing, since he'd be so wrong on the previous ones. At 12:15, I finally got a call saying they were done. I went over immediately, and it still took another 15+ minutes for them to process my payment and give me my car back. Total for Day 2: 4.5 hours for a repair Will said would take 1.25 hours. Total for both days: 8 hrs for repairs Will said would take 2.75. That said, as far as I can tell, the techs did fine work mechanically. My takeaway lessons: - Don't trust Will's time estimates - Go to a coffee shop - Pester them frequently; Will only gave me info when I pestered him. - Or ... consider going to Joe's Tires in downtown Berkeley; they might not be any faster, but it's got more useful places to go while you're waiting. read more
