The battery the nice folks at Oceanworks told me was fine ("could be rodents")
    Rafaela R.

I took my car here for a general checkup before I was going to go on a long roadtrip as well as an oil change and tire rotation. Because they don't have the necessary equipment to do tire alignments or wheel rebalancing, I had to take my car to a second shop around two days later, where they told me that my battery was on the verge of dying. I went back to this shop and showed them the picture of the battery, and the man at the service counter and one of the mechanics told me that it wasn't battery acid, he didn't know what it was but it could be "rodents" or what happens to the battery when someone spills hot water on it? I went here because my neighbor has been taking her car here for a long time, and to be fair the woman at the service counter offered me a complimentary battery cleaning and testing - but the relationship with the mechanic, for me, is one of trust, and I don't trust anything this shop says based on my one and only experience, and on the man at the front being totally dismissive when I had the consideration to go in and speak with them directly. There are a lot of other mechanics in the area within walking distance that will treat you decently.

THE GOOD: This small…read moreshop is ran by a guy name Earl. Seems to have been in business for quite some time. I go to him on a Monday 10/20/25 for a smog diagnosis that he charged $95, about the standard price. He was able to complete the inspection and gave me a diagnosis back same day (approx. 4 hours total time). He offered a free throttle body clean because upon their inspection, the throttle was dirty and had a lot of carbon build up. I was notified the vehicle would be ready for pick up at 4:15PM, I told him I was going to be there 4:30PM. When I had arrived, earl was nice enough to wait around after they had closed for me to receive my vehicle. THE BAD: After I paid him for the diagnosis, he told me what was wrong and gave me the keys, then promptly left with a friend that was awaiting him. Right after I pulled off in my car, something was awfully wrong. The idle RPMS was sitting at almost 2K RPMS on a cold start and would come to about 1500-1900RPMS the entire time. As I was driving while hitting the gas you could hear what sounded like was a vacuum leak somewhere and car has some minor lost power. I call Earl immediately after, but he was already gone from the shop; Earl told me to just bring it in first thing in the morning. I bring the vehicle back to Earl on 10/21/25 a day later and present to him what had sounded like a vacuum leak. He was quick to check into but also VERY QUICK TO DENY RESPONSIBILITY. I told him that the vehicle was 110% not like this when I had brought it in and they definitely may have knocked a hose or two loose or something. They first told me they would not doing anything like that, and wanted to run a smoke down test in-front of me to check for vacuum leaks. I was told by Earl, they only took off the air intake boot to access the throttle body to spray carb cleaner and there's absolutely no way they caused any of the issues presented. They run the test, and there shows no leaks from the smoke. They also run a brake clean spray to see if it will choke the RPMs down (another method to check for vacuum leaks). We go for a couple of test drives back and forth, the mechanic that Earl has working for him, poor guys age is catching up to him and cannot hear a huge vacuum leak for his life. Earl claims to hear it as well, but cannot figure out what it is. Earl first blames the brake booster, and is adamantly asserting that he or his shop did not cause this. ***Earl THEN DISCOVERS A MISSING connection on my VSV, but the old mechanic claims it won't cause any vacuum leaks or noises and just caps it off.***. They then proceed to say the noise and high RPMS is an exhaust leak and show me where it is leaking. You can see exhaust smoke coming out the pipe right below the manifold but I wouldn't say it was sufficient enough to be causing such a vacuum leak noise. They adjudicate the issue is an exhaust leak, therefore, they did not cause it and cannot fix it anyways. It is worth mentioning I am not by any means a mechanic. I am what you call a garage monkey. I understand some concepts, but no way am I to be at the SUPPOSED level these guys are at. I have my doubts so I go home and take apart the air intake boot and further inspect the throttle body. There it is, lo and behold a vacuum line disconnected from the throttle body that was suppose to be connected the VSV. To summarize everything , Earl is a truthfully a honest guy it seems, but is seemingly incompetent on the work and guys working for him do rushed, shoddy, crude, messy work. It's not hard taking off an air intake boot and reconnecting all necessary hose lines back. Paid $95 for some problems they claim they didn't cause and don't believe the customer, ONLY to take it back home and undo the bad work they did. Crazy stuff and would not go back. Be wary of what you're doing here.

Jesse took the time to really listen, review my service history, and methodically work through the possible causes instead of jumping to conclusions. When the first repair didn't fix it, he didn't give up... he kept troubleshooting, consulted with a trusted colleague, and ultimately tracked it down to the left front axle. He even test drove the car himself to make sure the vibration was truly gone before giving it back to me. Jesse was kind, honest, (funny!) and thorough throughout the whole process. I'll definitely be coming back and highly recommend Big O Tires for more than just tires.

I had a terrible experience here, and it wasn't the first with the chain…read more I brought my car in for a full synthetic oil change that was supposed to include a tire rotation and inspection. Because I've had sketchy experiences with them before, I marked one of my tires beforehand so I'd know for sure whether they actually rotated them. They told me it would take about two hours and that they would call me when it was done. After 2 1/2 hours, I called and asked for a progress report. The employee said, "Oh, it's done. I just haven't gotten to call you yet." A little annoying, but ultimately not the end of the world. I understand places get busy. When I arrived, though, I checked for the marked tire before going inside, and sure enough, it was still in the exact same spot. One of my previous sketchy experiences with this company was when they told me they couldn't safely rotate my tires because the wear pattern would make it unsafe. The tires were not very old, and I had never heard of that before, so I took my car to a different shop and they rotated them without any issue or question of safety. I went inside and said something along the lines of, "Let me guess -- you guys decided you couldn't rotate the tires because I need new ones?" The employee said, "No, he rotated them." "Actually, he didn't. I marked the tire, and they were definitely not rotated." "Well, there's no note about the tires, so I'm not sure why they didn't do it." Then he kind of just paused like maybe I'd let it go. I didn't. I instead just stood there waiting for him to give anything resembling an appropriate response. Eventually, with total apathy and annoyance in his voice and demeanor, he went to look at the car and then gave me some similar reason as last time about why they "probably didn't rotate them due to the wear pattern and safety." Then I asked about the inspection, and specifically the air filter, which I knew needed to be replaced. I expected them to catch it and offer it as an additional paid service. Instead, he told me, "Nope. Everything looked good. No notes." At that point, I started getting heated and raised my voice slightly: "There's no way that can be true." Then the manager came over, heard the situation, and casually said something like, "The mechanic probably just didn't do the inspection." Again, no apology or real acknowledgment that this was a problem. Instead, he just said, "We'll do it within the hour." So now I'm being told to wait another hour so they can actually do the job they were supposed to do an hour ago at that point. I asked the manager to inspect the tires first and make sure they were actually going to be willing to rotate them. He just said, "Oh, we'll rotate them," and did not look at them at all. This leaves two possibilities: Either the original explanation was nonsense and this proves they are running a scam, or they were now willing to do something they supposedly thought was unsafe. After waiting again, they finally rotated the tires. I checked the marking and it was gone, so at least that part finally got done. Then I asked again about the air filter, and was once again told it was fine. I said, "The filter behind the glove compartment?" "Yep. The inspection showed no problems." I said there was no way that was true and asked whether they had actually looked at the car at all. The employee responded with, "Well, if you don't trust us..." and then said something like, "Why don't you go look at it and tell me whether it's dirty then?" I'm not a mechanic, but I was so frustrated that I looked up how to check it on YouTube, pulled it out myself, and it was filthy -- covered in literal leaves and debris. I brought it back inside and asked, "Does this look clean to you?" Instead of apologizing, I got attitude and eye-rolling. The closest thing I got to accountability from management was, "I'll talk to my guys later." That's it. At this point, I genuinely don't know what services were or weren't actually performed on my car. I paid for a full synthetic oil change, tire rotation, and inspection, and had to personally catch the fact that at least two of those things apparently weren't done. I wish I knew how to tell whether the correct oil was used, because I wouldn't put it past them to swap it out for something cheaper. I normally try to give businesses grace, but this experience crossed the line from disorganized into actively dishonest and rude. Don't go here. But if you do -- mark your tires.

I ended up having to call 3 times until I was able to speak with the owner Vahe (sp? ; I'm not sure if he's related to Raj, the previous owner apparently) who refused to give me an estimate over the phone and said he had to 'plug it into my estimate software.' After some additional quibbling, he finally told me that it would probably cost around $600-700 dollars. This amount of money for a simple door and hood swap is ridiculous! It's something I could do on my own time but I just don't live in a place that allows for mechanic work (apartment complex) or access to all the tools. I recall Raj was way nicer and professional about it rather than trying to sound like a used car salesman and sleaze their way into bringing my car to the shop (I would have to ask a friend to bring the spare parts to be swapped since they don't fit in my car, at which point would be difficult to decline the job). Really, really disappointed and I don't think I can recommend this place again. *Update* Very interesting that the owner chose to respond so quickly upon my updated review. Their claim was factually false, as reasons to bring in my car were never discussed over the phone and he repeatedly just stated that he would be plugging in and quoting me whatever his estimate software produced. In fact, they have a button where you can request an estimate right on their Yelp page which makes it even more unbelievable. Would re-iterate to avoid this place like the plague since the new owners obviously did not carryover the honest work from the previous ones.
