Ever since our cars were no longer covered by the manufacturers warranty, we were looking for a good mechanic that worked on German cars but didn't charge an arm and a leg. We were lucky to find Collie Autoworks. They could work on both our BMW and our Smart car (it's getting more difficult to find folks who will work on the Smart). They do great work with fast turn around, are incredibly friendly and managed to keep a straight face when our car was having issues because a squirrel filled the engine compartment of the Smart with acorns. read more

Collie Autoworks provides reasonable and affordable service in the San Rafael area. After my several poor experiences at the Mercedes Benz of Marin, I was on the hunt for a shop that would do the recent maintenance service at a reasonable price. Thankfully, I found Collie Autoworks which came highly recommended through Yelp. When I called, I was quoted a price that was considerably less than Mercedes Benz of Marin. The person gave me a time to drop off the car and estimated time required to complete the maintenance. Both seemed completely reasonable so I decided to proceed with Collie Autoworks. At drop off, I appreciated that I did not have a bunch of paperwork to fill out. The whole process was relatively fast and took less than ten minutes. Even the time it took to finish the maintenance was even faster than I expected so I was ready to go back home with my car by lunch time. Note that the shop is located on the corner and does not have much space for drop off. If you are trying to go in the morning, try to avoid the hours when school is starting because that added a few extra minutes and stress to my ride there. Overall, Collie Autoworks felt like a completely different experience from my last at Mercedes Benz of Marin and I would highly recommend anyone in the area who needs service to reconsider taking there business here. read more

Collie Autoworks, 10 stars! I've taken my car to Collie for routine service, maintenance, and repairs for the last few years and have always had excellent service. I have a BMW M240i and had a minor issue last year and brought my car to the BMW dealership to inspect and was given an estimate for a number of things, including a new battery at $450. I declined the work and brought it to Collie and received a far better price for doing the same repairs and the confirmed that I didn't need a new battery at all. That was 5 months ago and my battery is still totally fine. I've always felt confident with their work and definitely recommend their service to anyone. read more

I'm so thrilled to have found my way to these amazing people (though not as thrilled for owning 7 Mercedes over 20+ years before I did so...). I made my way here after a VERY bad expereince in servicing my car at Mercedes of Marin. I'll leave out the details, but so bad as to make a 20 year customer finally look around (and no less, I bought a new Porshe instead of another Mercedes...). Anyway, two GLE350's we own to be maintained, so need a solution. Collie was just super easy to deal with: friendly, kind, straight forward in explaining options, what really needs to be addressed and what might be able to wait. Service was on time, comms and work quality were great and I'm super happy. This is a terrific place. read more

Extremely disappointed with this repair shop! I have been happy with my Mercedes cars for many years, and I had the best Master Mercedes Benz mechanics in Sonoma Co. as well as Palm Springs where we have a few cars at another home. Someone recommended this shop closer to my main residence in Marin. I had the usual services done to the Sl500, unfortunately I drove into a puddle that caused water to get sucked into the 2 air intakes according to Collie mechanics that were trying to diagnose the car not starting. They told me that the car wouldn't start (that was obvious) as the tow truck service tried already. They proceeded to tell me water got into the engine and it needs to be replaced. They told me they would find a used engine for around $1,500 and quoted me $8,630.90 to repair it with no warranty. I decided this was not worth it, I have the money to repair the car but decided a used engine was no warranty isn't a good idea. I have other more fun exotic cars to enjoy, so it was best to walk away from this one. I advertised it and sold it to a nice gentleman, he is not a certified mechanic. The buyer asked if I went through a few basic tests, I told him no I didn't, I put my trust in the expert mechanics at Collie. The buyer called me the other day to ask me a question, and during our conversation I asked if he made progress on the car. The buyer John replied, I removed the 2 air intake filters, installed 2 new batteries, he changed the oil + filter. The Sl500 started right up and he has been driving it regularly and enjoys it very much! My loss because of the lazy misdiagnosis of the Mechanics at Collie. If you are having Routine services at this shop you should be okay, beware of a major issue or misdiagnosis by them. I know my other mechanic in Palm Springs would never have made this major mistake. Unfortunately, my Sonoma Co. Master Mercedes Benz Mechanic passed away a couple years ago. I will never bring any of my cars to Collie again, nor will I recommend their shop to my friends in Marin. This isn't about that car or money, it's the lack of professionalism in diagnosing a little issue that they turned into a major engine job replacement. I hope anyone that has a major issue with their diagnosis on their vehicle in the future gets a second opinion. BTW the charge was only $90 for the little, to no work they did on looking at my car. That price should have been my clue to go get another opinion from another repair shop. read more

I had some service work done on my 1995 BMW recently by Collie Autoworks. I found them to be informative in terms of explaining the repairs needed and communicative in terms of providing repair cost estimates and a timeline for the repairs. In addition, when I picked up the car, they had lubricated a squeeky door hinge and cleaned the rims, neither of which I had expected them to do. Great job, Robert and Mike.! I'll be back.. Wow, this crew is pretty amazing. Knowledgeable, nice, and informative. When my Mercedes Sprinter van got a rattle in the front and it sounded like I was driving a tuna can they knew exactly what the problem was. They handled it efficiently and took the time to explain all the ins and outs of my vehicle. Automotive repairs are a guess work if you aren't a car wrench, so for those of us that don't work on our cars this is the place for honest and quality work. Reasonable would be inaccurate because every-time I walk out of Collie Autoworks, I feel like I received a great deal and won the day. Their work is perfect (never had to bring my car back for a re-do), we speak to what needs to be done prior, there's never any change orders, and on changing out light bulbs, false positive 'check-engine' lights, etc. the only charge me for the physical parts and not the labor. The place is always busy, yet they seem to always fit me on when it works best for me, and find time to discuss things in detail. Since I don't know much about what goes on under the hood, they speak to me patiently and in layman's terms. Although I don't like having a need to car repairs, when I do, I am always assured I will be taken care of with integrity. Thanks!!! read more

Brought our Sprinter-based RV for a major service at Collie. I race cars as a hobby and I am an experienced mechanic, but I needed a shop who could handle a turbo system overhaul. My experience means that I am an informed, demanding customer, and I'm highly skeptical of new shops. Collie came highly recommended by two other local independent mechanics (they service other European marques), so I tried them out. We could not have been happier with their service. The staff are friendly, professional, and very straightforward to work with. They did a fantastic job on the repairs, installed 4 new tires, gave the van a thorough inspection and pointed out other things it will need in the foreseeable future (instead of pushing early services like so many dealers do), and -- best of all -- their prices were totally reasonable. And how about this for going above and beyond. We made the mistake of leaving some food in our small freezer in the refrigerator, which obviously spoiled given that the RV was not hooked up to shore power during the repairs. :-( Rather than just ignore it, the staff threw out the spoiled food, ventilated the RV so that the smell wouldn't soak into the interior, and they even attempted to scrub the fridge to help us out! Despite it being our own silly mistake, Collie did everything they could for us to have a good experience. You don't often see that kind of conscientious behavior. Collie will have our business as long as we have a Mercedes. read more

It's hard to swallow spending almost $2k for unexpected repairs, but I love my old car and I am happy with the service I received. I had remembered Roger when they had done a good job on my girlfriend's Mercedes (their specialty) but still I was hesitant with my BMW. This shop is very busy and I had several major issues so it took a while even for the estimate, but a better rate than my usual go-to mechanic plus door-to-door shuttle service eased the pain. The car had started misfiring and stalling, and to make matters worst, the tired ignition key assembly finally fell apart internally. I was hoping the two were related but I knew better. They had to replace the entire assembly and its components which because of the anti-theft design, had to be cut out of the column with a grinder (yikes). I got a new assembly, ignition switch, tumbler, and factory key matched to the VIN. The misfire was fixed with a new fuel injector, and I also agreed to replace the seeping water pump, plus all fresh belts, so it was no joke. When the job was finished Darren answered all my questions and I got a good vibe from him, as well as the rest of the staff. They also took the time to wash my car which was a nice touch. I brought my car (a 1971 Mercedes 280 SL convertible) to Collie automotive. They worked through many issues which were not their fault and honored the warranty on the fuel injector pump rebuild. It took 4 rebuilds to get the job done right. Darren continued to work with the injector pump vendor until he received one which worked. I'm sure this was one of his most trying repairs and i'm thankful he stayed the course and got my car running properly. Thank you Darren!! read more

We brought in our 2006 Mercedes Benz SL 500, It needed new shifting linkage, a new trunk lock and a new battery so the top would work. Also the key faub didn't work. When we got the car back the key did work. Aaron and Matt explained that all the systems work, connected together. We were able to cancel the order for key which saved us $500.00. I emailed them several weeks back with regard to some routine maintenance for my vehicle. They responded within minutes via email with available dates/times to bring my car in for service, along with a .pdf file that outlined their pricing structure, and detailed services provided. With this information, I was able to make a proactive decision to take in my vehicle for service. Roger, at the front desk, was friendly, informative, and further explained the services offered. The work was done in a timely manner, and the prices were spot-on with what was quoted. After having similar work done at a local dealership where the vehicle was purchased, I can safely say that Collie's provided me the best value and customer service for the money. Routine "A" Service completed in just over an hour, and I was on my way. I went to Collie's after reading the yelp reviews and calling and getting quotes from Collie's and my usual dealership. I spoke with Denise who co-owns the shop w/her hubby. She quoted me $250 for a major scheduled service whereas my dealership said it would be $400! Because Collie's is a Mercedes specialist, I asked if they did VW's (I have a passat) and Denise said they did (I also saw a VW parked there when I got there) so I felt ok with my car in their hands. I called on Tuesday and they got me an appointment that Thursday, with a free loaner! My dealership appointment would've been at least a week later without a loaner. I dropped my car off at 11:30. It was a quick drop off and Denise even printed out a complete list of what they were going to do on my car. I got a call around 4:30 and Denise said that my maintenance was done, but they noticed my rear breaks were really worn down. They offered to replace the pads for about $170, an average price. I called back around 4:45 or 4:50 and said if they could finish it in time so that I could have my car back that night to go ahead. Denise said they would definitely try to get it done in time, and said that I could even pick up my car at 5:45 when they technically close at 5:30. I got there a little before 6 and chatted with Denise as I did the paper work. I was super thankful that they were staying open a little late to work on my car so I could take it home that night but she and I think it was her hubby apologized to me that it was taking a few minutes extra! The price was spot-on, Denise was super nice; they felt really honest and reasonable and knew what they were doing. I will definitely go back for any future work that has to be done on my car. (Oh, and as a girl, I felt it was better to bring along a guy friend when dropping off my car but they were so honest and b/c Denise was a co-owner, I picked up my car alone and I feel just fine going by myself next time.) read more

My dad loved them and multiple times I have brought it to them and they have always been upfront and honest about what needs to be done and how much it costs. There was a time when I did go to another mechanic just to have a comparison and never got the same level of service or attention. They understand if you don't have a lot of money to spend, and they really understand Mercedes to a T. I know this because multiple times the repairs have come in under budget, which says a lot about what they value.
