I am driving home now. What a beautiful feeling that is! My work truck got a flat tire which means I had to reschedule all my jobs. And after waiting a couple hours for the tow truck they finally arrived close to 5 PM. The shop I was supposed to go to for the tire replacement said they could not except my vehicle because they were too backed up. I checked with a couple other shops nearby and it was the same story. They were either closed or too busy to help. I called Universal tires and they answered right away, they told me they were closing soon but I asked him if there was anyway you could wait for me and that I would pay extra. The owner said it's OK come now The tow truck was right around the corner so we made it in less than 10 minutes. The owner of universal tires helped me out right away even though there was other cars he was dealing with. He examined my tire and determined it was not repairable and they sold me a used tire for a great price. I can't express enough how bad of a feeling it is to be without a work vehicle and get turned away from multiple shops. These guys are outstanding. I needed rear shocks installed and when they checked out my old shocks they found one of the bolts was broken. They showed it to me and I thought "oh no this is going to cost me a lot more money and take a lot more time." ​Daniel ended up driving over to the hardware store and bought a couple of bolts. He bought a second one since ​he said ​the bolt would break on the second shock as well.  He ​replaced both bolts and only charged me $2 more for doing that extra work including going to the hardware store. that $2 was how much the bolts cost. I'm a little blown away by the faulty practices of this place. I'd avoid going here at all cost as you get what you pay for. This is far from worth your time and money. We had a torn bead on a brand new tire installed by Universal Tires. Apparently this was due to the negligence of whoever put the tire on the rim and perhaps a lack of lube. We drove nearly 500 miles and the tire blew up on the highway nearly sending us in a heinous wreck. This was not a manufacturers fault this was the mechanics fault. A torn bead on the tire happens only by faulty practice. Avoid this place. They nearly killed us and would not help entertain the warranty with ease. I suggest going to a commercial branch of any sort. NOT THIS PLACE!!! read more

These guys truly went so far above and beyond. Couldn't give a stronger recommendation for a tire shop (or really any type of business). They clearly cared more about giving me great service than how much they were making. I had been calling and going to tire shops for a couple or weeks trying to find a good set of tires for a decent price and having no luck. Most of the shops I went to didn't seem very trust worthy and were continuously trying to sell me on tires that were either way too expensive or very wrong for my needs. I was on my way to another tire shop and when I drove past universal tires and decided to stop in. Immediatly they seemed trustworthy and I felt comfortable. They didn't have any new tires in my size at the time, so I checked out what the had used. They found four tires for me that were in good shape and are good quality tires that were just what I needed. All four tires mounted and balanced cost barely more than what some shops were quoting me for one tire. And beyond the great deal, they were super friendly and really helpful. I mentioned that I didn't have the security key for my lug nuts, but they said it wouldn't be an issue for them. And then they gave me a security key they had for free. And while they were putting on my tires they noticed my tailpipe was hanging real low. It was my next chore for the day to try and fix it, but without even asking they got it wired up better than I could have. Seriously, if you're in the East Bay and need tires, look no further. read more

I sat on this for a little while, trying to give the benefit of a doubt that sometimes people have bad days but after some prospective and talking with other mechanics, I decided to write a review. To keep it simple, my car was incorrectly put on the car lift and fell off, so I was told and I saw with my own eyes. There was no serious damage too my car thankfully but to feel comfortable about that, I had to take it to another mechanic to feel reassured. I have always dealt with getting my car fixed via other mechanics and have never had such a horrible experience. Even if having a bad day, I don't feel like the whole situation was dealt with properly. You can decide for yourself if you want to take your car in but I will never bring my car back to say the least. read more

I ran over a screw driving to Berkeley from Marin and my tire went totally flat. I painstakingly put on the spare and happened to see the GRAND OPENING sign when all the other garages were already closed for the day. Heaven-sent! He was so quick and detailed, and I feel that I got a very fair price considering the labor and how quickly I was in and out of there. He even rotated a couple of my tires at my request! So friendly and very helpful. They got my tire fixed in under 30min. I called ahead to ask if they had my size tire and if they were able to take me before I got my truck towed to their shop. I drive a Fiat and I found a flat tire with a nail in it out the door to go to work. I had a tow truck take me over to Universal Tires and arrived at 8:45 am. The place was clean and open. We thought we would just need a patch to cover the hole. Turns out my back tires were worn unevenly and ruined because of my shocks going bad. They ordered new shocks and said that the parts would come by 11:00. The parts weren't there until almost 12:00, and then the only 185/55r15 tires they had for my car were used. The two guys were very nice and communicative, but I feel like the whole process took longer than it needed to and they seemed a little under-prepared for a Fiat (to be honest, Fiats are considered "specialty cars" and harder to keep parts in stock, I totally understand). The prices were fair and the service was friendly overall. The two tires were $40 each, and the shocks (parts + labor) were $250. There were no hidden fees or sales tax or disposal charges, so it cost me $330 out the door. Heads up if you need a paper receipt to keep records of repairs, their machine wasn't able to print one, so they texted it to me. read more

From vintage Mustang tires to reasonably priced used tires with plenty of tread, this is the tire shop for everyone! Great and friendly service. After I went to Goodyear for a free tire inspection they said my old tire had cracks and that was causing the slow leak. They tried to sell me four tires for way too much money and said it was fine to drive on my bad tire. When I went to Universal Tires, Daniel showed me the screw in my tire that was causing the leak and he plugged it so I could use the tire as my spare and he gave me a terrific used tire for a reasonably low price, balanced it and put it on my car. Looks like Goodyear was trying to screw me! Forget all other stores for tires: go to Universal in Berkeley and you will not be sorry! read more
