Probably the best place to eat in Hanalei! Highly recommend trying the "da local plate" - the beef and chicken with that insanely good sauce were next level. The potato salad that comes on the side is also amazing. My husband ordered a burger, and the patty was incredibly tender and juicy. Service was fast and super friendly, and we had dinner on their cute patio with a view of the mountains, which made the whole experience even better. Such a great vibe. Prices are totally reasonable for a place like this. Defintely recommend stopping by!

Honestly... this place is such a vibe. We stopped by Big Nick's in Hanalei on Friday around 4:30 PM, not even super hungry, but we wanted something quick and local before the evening plans. The spot is small and simple (in a good way), and it feels like the kind of place that's been doing their thing forever -- no fake "tourist trap energy." What we ordered: * I got the Big Nick's Burger * My wife got the Da Local Plate * Total for two: $49 First of all -- my wife's Da Local Plate was a straight-up 5/5. The flavors were on point and it just tasted fresh and satisfying. She was genuinely happy with it (which is always the real test). My burger was solid. Not the best burger I've ever had in my life, but definitely good -- juicy, filling, and hits the spot. If I'm being honest, I probably wouldn't reorder that exact burger again... but I'd 100% come back here and try something else from the menu because the food quality feels legit. Overall, it's a great local stop. Simple, tasty, and real. Mahalo Big Nick's -- we'll be back.

If you like burgers n protein, and getting caught in the rain Then take cover here. Perfect easy lunch to escaping the downpour. We got the local plate (3 proteins, rice and mac-potato salad) and a burger. Friendly, aloha service. Tip: be kind and patient; they get slammed and are a small kitchen so need time to cook up the magic. That they will do!

We ordered the local plate - a combo of chicken, beef and shrimp. It hit the spot after an amazing beach day. Not to mention, the view if you sit right outside, it's a dream.

A great stop for a tasty lunch while out exploring Hanalei. The inside is a quaint little shop with a kitchen that looks like a little food truck within the shop. The menu has simple choices but you don't need to look to far to find something tasty. We just got one plate of chili pepper chicken and enjoyed it out front on the porch. The chicken was tender and had a little kick to it with almost a sweet and sour sauce on it. The mac/potato salad combo was unique and did a lot to cool the spice of the chicken. Fast service and tasty food, just what you need sometimes.

Delish. The grilled chicken and coconut shrimp were yum. Fried taro beats fries in my book too!

My husband and kids were in the mood for burgers and fries so they opted to stop at Big Nick's for lunch while we were in Hanalei. My husband got the grumpy paniolo and taro and black bean burger, with a side of taro wedges. The place was steady at lunch on a Tuesday. The grumpy paniolo was my favorite of the two burgers because the black bean burger had an odd burnt taste. And I am always about the meatless burger options. There was a good amount of freshness to the paniolo burger. The fries were good along with the taro wedges which were fried but still tasted like taro. The dipping sauce was also a great addition to the burger and fries. There were seats inside as well as outside. We opted to sit outside. The burgers were ok, not OMG amazing. But the price makes sense for Hawaii tourist spots. Parking lots surround the place in the back as well as across the street.

The best casual meal we had all week and the best bang for our buck!Order at the counter, have a seat inside or outside and they bring the deliciousness out to you. We ordered Da Local Plate and Big Nicks Burger, and an extra side of potato/mac salad. Potato/mac salad was oh so good, I'm a texture person and was a little worried about the combo but holy hell was it delicious. Da Local plate was absolutely amazing. The chicken was charbroiled to perfection with just the right amount of Teri sauce. The Teri Beef was thin and also cooked to perfection without it being dry and also had the perfect amount of Teri Sauce. Now the coconut shrimp was probably my favorite! Not only was it massive but the coconut breading was a great ratio! My partner loved Big Nick Burger. The charbroiled meat on the delicious bun was the highlight! Highly recommend! We for sure make this a place we return to when we visit again!

We loved stopping into big nicks for lunch. Service was good, food came out quick, & there is indoor and outdoor seating. Food took about 10 minutes, not bad! The nicks burger was huge! I loved the local plate.

Good fries, good service. Decent burger. Not sure if I'd go again because of the price. The burger was just OK, definitely not an OMG moment. I appreciate the fresh veggies. I the regular cheeseburger, wife got the burger with teriyaki sauce. We barely tasted a difference. Not many burger options in that area so of you're craving a burger, it'll satisfy.

Been following them since their food cart days, finally got to visit. They were busy, but not crazy busy, a couple people in line and most tables full, but not all. I ordered the Big Nicks signature burger, and my wife got the Teriyaki Chicken plate lunch. The burger is a double Teriyaki glazed burger, with American cheese, crispy onions, sauce, lettuce and tomato. Super flavorful, and super juicy. Probably in my top 10-15 burgers of all time. The chicken plate lunch was great too. The chicken might have been over-charred in a coupon spots, but overall was really good. The potato/mac salad was addictive and really good. I'd come here in a heartbeat if close by. Great place.

8.5/10 got the chili pepper chicken plate. rice was dry :( the chicken was fried well and the sauce was sweet and very slightly spicy! potato mac was a bit sour... nothing special. chicken was solid though.

Our first time here and what a great experience. From our welcome to the fabulous burgers to the final aloha as we left. We cannot wait to go back on our next trip to Hanalei!

So we pulled up to Chicken In A Barrel BBQ around 6:30 PM on a Thursday, and honestly... it hit the spot in the best way. We ordered the 1/2 Chicken, the #3 Baby Back Rib Plate, plus a full order of fries and a side of ranch. Total came out to about $50, which felt totally fair for the amount of food and how filling it was. The ribs were my favorite part -- smoky, meaty, and not dry at all. They had that real BBQ vibe without being drowned in sauce. The chicken had a solid char on the outside and stayed juicy inside (which is not easy after a long day when you're eating fast and don't want to mess around). Fries were crispy and salty -- exactly what you want after a hike like that. This place is simple, casual, no fancy nonsense -- just good BBQ that makes you feel human again. If you're on Kauai and you've been hiking all day (or even if you haven't), this spot is absolutely worth it. We left full, happy, and already talking about coming back again.

The loaded french fries are worth it, but you can do a half order. Which I recommend. If you're eating there, all the chickens and roosters outside will stare at you, with every french fry you bite into. Bbq sauce was addictive. Most dishes come with Chili, which has pork in it, but you can substitute for onion rings - which were much better. I would always do that, if I were you. Fortunately, on this visit, the staff was engaging and helpful. The previous day was some little kid who didn't know anything about the menu. But hey, family members help out in a pinch, I guess. You're in Kauai after all, so yes, we had a torrential downpour while eating. Luckily, we were under their non-leaky outdoor dining area. Added to the Kauai vibe. Only downside was listening to the teenagers who work at the shave ice place, vent as loudly as possible, about one of them is already at a crossroads in life. Geez, "slow yourself down", kid. And lower the volume.

We were seated on the covered patio, overlooking their lawn and the Hanalei River. The food was straightforward and good, but what we liked the most was our server. I sadly don't recall her name but she was a young girl who grew up in Hanalei and clearly has passion for food and for service. She knew the menu and spoke confidently about it, and shared little anecdotes along the way - she was attentive, informative, joyful, and yet not intrusive. A shining service star. The mixed tempura starter was tasty. The salad was a plate of fresh veggies - fresh but basic in presentation and flavor. I personally might skip this next time. We really enjoyed the daily special of soba noodles with yuzu sauce. Bright and citrusy. And the sushi rolls we enjoyed were clean in flavor with a focus on the fresh fish: -Next Best Thing -Hamachi -Avocado roll Another friend said that she orders the sushi rolls to go. And she also told me about their neighboring fish market, if you want to get fish to make at home (we did not have time to check that out).
