Big Nick's was such a standout spot during our time in Kauai! I ordered the chili pepper chicken bowl, which came with three pieces of juicy, flavorful chicken that had the perfect spicy kick -- not overwhelming, but definitely satisfying. It was served over a scoop of rice and made for such a filling, delicious meal. On the employee's recommendation, we also got the taro wedges, and I'm so glad we did! They were crispy and crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, and yes... a little oily -- but in the best, indulgent way. The sauce that came with it (not sure what it was!) was SO good and paired perfectly with the wedges. My husband ordered the taro burger, and we both loved it -- it ended up being his favorite vegetarian meal on Kauai! Good to know: there's parking in the back, which is also where the bathrooms are located (just ask for the key). Overall, Big Nick's is a must-try for flavorful, local-style comfort food. Fresh, savory meats! Crispy, fresh shrimp! Texture-licous Mac/potato salad. Friendly, welcoming service. Didn't know where we were going to grab dinner but this one hit the spot. Especially after the super religious chicken barrel spot ran out of chicken and ribs (but not Jesus). The outside patio is nice, with stools, and we saw a rainbow. The end. The sequel! Okay, stopped by on our way back to Kapa'a. The place is small , like many places on the island. It was clean and in a cool spot right on the roadside with outdoor seating as well. The food was really good. We had the chicken salad and chicken plate along with my sons having the burger. The one downside were the two teenage girls sitting at the order counter, constantly giggling and playing on their phones. They were annoying as heck. They are a downer unfortunately for Big Nicks place. Whoever owns the place should get some more mature because I won't go back. Probably the best place to eat in Hanalei! Highly recommend trying the "da local plate" - the beef and chicken with that insanely good sauce were next level. The potato salad that comes on the side is also amazing. My husband ordered a burger, and the patty was incredibly tender and juicy. Service was fast and super friendly, and we had dinner on their cute patio with a view of the mountains, which made the whole experience even better. Such a great vibe. Prices are totally reasonable for a place like this. Defintely recommend stopping by! read more

Great place to grab a quick affordable lunch with outstanding service!! My husband and I split a double classic burger. It was cooked to perfection.... hot and juicy. I wish it had a spread on the bun for flavor, but that's a personal preference. I'd still order the burger again. The fries were plentiful, hot and super yummy too!! One of my pet peeves is being served luke warm fries. If I am going to eat something not so healthy for myself, I sure as heck don't want to waste it on luke warm food. Even though it was pretty busy, they got the food out in a very timely manner. The place is nice and clean with great music playing. There are about 5 tables inside. An outside deck that has bar stools all along it. Below the deck are plenty of picnic tables. As other reviews have said there is not a public restroom, but I wouldn't let that keep you from coming here! The place was packed. Honestly... this place is such a vibe. We stopped by Big Nick's in Hanalei on Friday around 4:30 PM, not even super hungry, but we wanted something quick and local before the evening plans. The spot is small and simple (in a good way), and it feels like the kind of place that's been doing their thing forever -- no fake "tourist trap energy." What we ordered: * I got the Big Nick's Burger * My wife got the Da Local Plate * Total for two: $49 First of all -- my wife's Da Local Plate was a straight-up 5/5. The flavors were on point and it just tasted fresh and satisfying. She was genuinely happy with it (which is always the real test). My burger was solid. Not the best burger I've ever had in my life, but definitely good -- juicy, filling, and hits the spot. If I'm being honest, I probably wouldn't reorder that exact burger again... but I'd 100% come back here and try something else from the menu because the food quality feels legit. A great stop for a tasty lunch while out exploring Hanalei. The inside is a quaint little shop with a kitchen that looks like a little food truck within the shop. The menu has simple choices but you don't need to look to far to find something tasty. We just got one plate of chili pepper chicken and enjoyed it out front on the porch. The chicken was tender and had a little kick to it with almost a sweet and sour sauce on it. The mac/potato salad combo was unique and did a lot to cool the spice of the chicken. My husband and kids were in the mood for burgers and fries so they opted to stop at Big Nick's for lunch while we were in Hanalei. My husband got the grumpy paniolo and taro and black bean burger, with a side of taro wedges. The place was steady at lunch on a Tuesday. The grumpy paniolo was my favorite of the two burgers because the black bean burger had an odd burnt taste. And I am always about the meatless burger options. There was a good amount of freshness to the paniolo burger. The fries were good along with the taro wedges which were fried but still tasted like taro. The dipping sauce was also a great addition to the burger and fries. There were seats inside as well as outside. We opted to sit outside. The burgers were ok, not OMG amazing. But the price makes sense for Hawaii tourist spots. Parking lots surround the place in the back as well as across the street. read more

The best casual meal we had all week and the best bang for our buck!Order at the counter, have a seat inside or outside and they bring the deliciousness out to you. We ordered Da Local Plate and Big Nicks Burger, and an extra side of potato/mac salad. Potato/mac salad was oh so good, I'm a texture person and was a little worried about the combo but holy hell was it delicious. Da Local plate was absolutely amazing. The chicken was charbroiled to perfection with just the right amount of Teri sauce. The Teri Beef was thin and also cooked to perfection without it being dry and also had the perfect amount of Teri Sauce. Now the coconut shrimp was probably my favorite! Not only was it massive but the coconut breading was a great ratio! My partner loved Big Nick Burger. The charbroiled meat on the delicious bun was the highlight! Highly recommend! After a long day of hiking, we needed a burger in our stomach! Big Nick's was recommended a couple of times to us and it was nearby so of course it was the right choice. I got the da local plate and my boyfriend got the da grumpy paniolo burger. I really wanted something local so my plate was perfect. The shrimp was my favorite part, as it was crispy and a little sweet! The beef/chicken was a little dry even with the teriyaki sauce on it. My boyfriend enjoyed his burger and he ate it up quick. They have indoor and outdoor seating and we took the opportunity to eat outside and enjoy the view. The food also came out pretty quickly. Overall, if you want a burger while in Kauai, you can't go wrong at Big Nick's. read more

Been following them since their food cart days, finally got to visit. They were busy, but not crazy busy, a couple people in line and most tables full, but not all. I ordered the Big Nicks signature burger, and my wife got the Teriyaki Chicken plate lunch. The burger is a double Teriyaki glazed burger, with American cheese, crispy onions, sauce, lettuce and tomato. Super flavorful, and super juicy. Probably in my top 10-15 burgers of all time. The chicken plate lunch was great too. The chicken might have been over-charred in a coupon spots, but overall was really good. The potato/mac salad was addictive and really good. I'd come here in a heartbeat if close by. Great place. read more

They were supposed to be open at 11:30 on Wednesday. No one was there at 11:30, and still no one was there at 12:45, when we were passing by again. No sign on the door saying, "We're closed for vacation/renovation." We ended up walking down the road and enjoyed killer pizza at Hanalei Pizza. Edited to add: the owner responded to my review saying that he is sick with a fever and that his son fractured his wrist. He also asked me to remove my review. I'm sorry the owner is sick, and I'm sorry his son has been injured, and I suspect someone can stop by the restaurant and hang a sign in the window saying the place is temporarily closed. Failing to take care of something so simple demonstrates disregard for patrons. Hopefully people see my review and are spared some aggravation. read more

We were in the area and the kids were getting hungry... problem is, we have picky eaters (kids). Came across Big Nick's on Yelp, my wife was a bit skeptical on how a previous customer's review was handled but that sounded like there were two sides of the story and I'm not here to judge. Just an unfortunate situation for both parties. Anyways, we stopped in and asked if they could do a plain cheeseburger and fries for the kids. The young guy at the counter said, we actually do have some kid options that aren't listed on the menu. PERFECT! They also have a filtered water refill station inside so bring your water bottles! My wife and I shared Da Local Plate; coco mac nut shrimp, terriyaki chicken and beef served with white rice, and mac salad. I loved the charred grill flavor, not overly salty or swimming in sauce, everything just worked perfectly and tasted delicious. The kids had their plain cheese burgers and again, those had that on the grill flavor, cooked perfectly! They got outdoor seating and a couple of tables inside. read more

Wow! Another Kauai gem discovered by complete accident. The bridge out of Hanalei was closed & we walked around looking for some food to eat instead of standing in long traffic line. And that's when we discovered this amazing place. DA GRUMPY PANIOLO burger was amazing. Even the fries were amazing. We also tried taro fritters & oh boy they were delicious! So delicious, I didn't take the picture. DA LOCAL PLATE was very satisfying, with shrimp, teriyaki chicken & beef combo. Had the big Nicks burger and it was ok but not $23 in my opinion. The fries were stale. Also had the Da Local Plate, proteins were great. But dammit, I am the kind of Asian that eat rice for breakfast, lunch, dinner and even snack! The rice was so damn undercooked, it still had hard lumps in the grain. The 2 scopes of rice were probably $5? The wife told the young server lady about it and the young man server overheard it and walked over to my wife and told my wife (and I Quote) "it's better eaten that way!" Are you freaking kidding me? You're gonna tell me how rice is better undercooked? If your restaurant is intentionally serves undercooked rice then, dammit, put it on the menu so I don't have to pay for something I won't eat! They just opened this new location 2 days ago and couldn't have been better! Enjoyed the meal and I left craving it and wanting to plan another meal there.
