Since when did hiding rotten brown avocado under garnishes become a thing? I mean, we all love avocado, and we all understand that bruised, yucky ones come along like 25 percent of the time, and have to be thrown away, as a minor sacrifice to our avo gods. I myself am not too picky! But the 'Famous' avo toast I received here had brown and yucky avo slices concealed under some salad items and it was too gross even for me. It wasn't just a piece or two- it was all the pieces. It was clear that this avo needed to be sacrificed and just somehow made it onto my plate anyways. I sent it back and they replaced the dish but I am having a hard time understanding how this happens, especially at a place that advertised its avo toast like it is the best thing since sliced bread. When I flew in on Thursday, my shuttle driver told me to check out Red Eye Snack Shack for the best Loco Moco on the island of Kauai. A previous love affair with the food had found multiple disappointing subsequent experiences, so I wanted 'the best.' This was THE BEST in all the right ways. Kealoha answered the phone even though she was technically closed for renovations and somehow I was able to convinced her to fire up the kitchen because told her I had heard this place was the best. Well let me tell you, after living in Oahu for 8 years and after 8-10 return visits since then...this was #1 of all time!!! We had the Loco Moco with kalua and Hawaiian fried rice (their specialty) and it was ONO-licious!! I recommend this place for the food and especially for the ALOHA!!! Found on a whim on our way to the hotel. Staff are so nice. It's a small hole in the wall but it's easy to miss. It's a pineapple shack on the side of the main road close to the airport. The smoked meat was standout. Other great choices are the huli chicken sandwich. There's a small market in the store that sells local fruits and goods.
