We'd read good Yelp reviews and decided to check it out. Fun spot once you find it; getting there takes you through part of the hotel, which is a nice way to see a bit more of the property. Food was good, but the menu is overpriced and overly fancy for what's essentially a poolside restaurant. The host experience is what knocked this down to 3 stars. We showed up about 5 minutes before opening with nobody else waiting. The hostess offered to put us on the waitlist, with no explanation: no mention that they were fully booked, or that they could work us in. When I pushed back a bit, she said she could seat us at 5:30, when they opened, literally 4 minutes later, and suggested we grab a drink at the bar across the pool area first. Just telling us "we're opening in a few minutes, hang tight" would've gone a long way. Food's solid, but the whole interaction felt unnecessarily complicated and unwelcoming. read more

This is a poolside bar at a truly beautiful hotel. When we were seated our server asked if we were guests of the hotel, but as soon as we said, no, her attitude changed. We put in our drink order (their version of a Paloma (5/5) and their coconut drink special (delicious), but she forgot to pick them up from the bar so we had already finished our appetizers (hummus and vegetables platter (3/5) and French Fries (5/5 - awesome) before our drinks arrived. For the mains, we tried the North Shore Pizza (garlic shrimp pizza 5/5 - great), Kale Cesar Salad (4.5/5 - fresh but plain) and the Chopped Harvest Salad (4.5/5 - but you have to like the strong vinegar taste). Again, she forgot to bring the Chopped Harvest Salad until everyone else was done with their meal. We actually had to just take it home. Maybe you get better service if you are a guest of the hotel but the food and location were quite good. We went at sunset which is beautiful. There was also a fire dancer who stopped by. Very nice outdoor eatery at the One Hotel in Hanalei, Kauai. Walking into the hotel reminded me of the White Lotus series, beautiful hotel. The Sandbox was not busy surprisingly so we were seated right away. It's next to the pool area so it is very casual. Service was good, maitais delicious and the food was great. The view can't be beat. Sandbox is located in the One Hotel in Princeville. We reach it by the beach it shares with Hanalei Bay Resort where we have a timeshare. Drinks are good & the eats are good. Expensive as you'd expect from One Hotel. Unfortunately, the bar closes at 5 every night except Tuesday. It makes no sense during the summer to close at 5 & not serve bar eats or dinner. read more

This was a maze to get to and I would say my experience was average, but the price was steep. Apparently, when you ask for a simple tequila soda/sprite, it is more expensive than their crazy concoctions on the menu. One of the bartenders rolled their eyes at me when I asked for a lime to replace the grapefruit I was given in my drink. Other bartenders were very friendly. I only got their Ahi Nachos, which they messed up the first time, and I thought they were good. I've had better, but I've also had worse. If they decrease the sweet chili sauce and increase the amount of avocado, the dish would have been soo much better. The ahi was fresh at least. Based on the proportions I was seeing of what other people ordered, most of the portions do not equal the price. Sandbox is such a fun pool bar and a perfect spot to hang out for the day. The drinks were delicious and definitely didn't disappoint. Brandon took care of us all day and he was absolutely fabulous. If you're into Long Island Iced Teas or mojitos, he makes them really well and doesn't skimp. Nice and strong in the best way. We didn't try the food this time, but we ended up meeting some great people sitting at the bar which added to the whole vibe. They also have two TVs, which is a nice bonus if you want to keep an eye on a football game while you're sipping a drink by the pool. This restaurant is located by the beach within the 1Hotel Hanalei Bay. They have valet parking available which was luckily free if you're just going to eat at the restaurant. The food and drinks were tasty- my fiancee had the peperoni pizza and I had the kauai greens salad with hulihuli chicken, and we tried the lilikoi spritz for drinks! This is probably one of the nicest beach views in Hanalei so definitely recommend a stop here for dinner with a breathtaking view. read more

I can see why the Sandbox has such high ratings We were staying at the 1 Hotel (where this is located) and came here twice during our trip. They have a seated area, but you can also get their food/drinks if you are lounging at the pool since they have someone from the restaurant coming around often. There aren't very many good food options in Princeville, and this was definitely the best we had, so I was glad we were staying at the hotel. We came for lunch one day and got the sandbox burger and the healthy bowl. The burger was definitely my favorite! It was smash burger style and not too messy, and the fries were perfect. The healthy bowl just had way too much rice, and the dressing was a bit too creamy for me. We also came another night for dinner and ordered a bbq chicken pizza and crispy shrimp which was on a special menu. We had reservations here for our first night on Kauai. We loved our experience. The location is stunning. You have to use the hotels valet service, it is $20 for 4 hours. The food at the Sand Box is a tad pricey, but food is excellent, especially considering that poolside food is usually horrible! Eric was our server on all three visits and he's great at his job.....he's friendly and calm even if he's mostly the main server and swamped with customers. We had the Ono Margarita, Lava Flow, Frose Pink Flamingo Frozen Cocktail and a Guava Lava Cider. Doesn't get any better than this - lunch on the beach with the most incredible view. Down at the pool makes it a fun afternoon spot for drinks and small bites, but their pizza is absolutely incredible. Not sure what they are doing to it, but as someone who has traveled and eaten a lot of pizza, this is easily in the top 3 best I've ever had. Best meal we had during our vacation on Kauai! The Sandbox is located inside of the 1 Hanalei Bay Resort. You have to valet park and then if you get turned around the very helpful hotel staff will point you in the right direction. Our server let us know right away that they were having an issue with their POS system so things would be running a little more slowly. No problem, we were on island time! I started with the Polynesian Prince cocktail, which was delicious. My meal was the Sandbox Smashburger with fries. Easily the best hamburger I've had in ages! Fries were crispy and delicious. This is by far the best restaurant in Princeville. First of all, the service is impeccable. Everyone goes above and beyond at The Sandbox. Their pizza is the best. The man who makes them all day is really awesome. He's so nice, he even took a beautiful picture of us at sunset from his outdoor kitchen. And of course, the view is to die for. We went there twice while we stayed at The 1 Hotel which by the way is 5 stars all the way. We ordered pizzas both times. And one night, the chef made an incredible grilled shrimp salad special. The weather made it a wonderful day to visit this beautiful property. The Sandbox offers a nice ambiance along poolside with the mountains in the background, an excellent Hawaiian Resort where one can sip the tropical refreshments of their choice. We enjoyed our lunch and the service provided. The pizza, taco and burger were good. The pizza sauce was a bit too sweet for me but the wife enjoyed it. There were two patties in the burger and I had expected one; they were thin so getting it cooked to medium is difficult. Overall I say go check out the place. Order some sides and enjoy an afternoon of refreshments along poolside under the Hawaiian sun. I will go back again in the future. read more
