I've heard about this place over the years (I live on the mainland). The owner attended the same high school as I. I did not realize it was right across the street from McDonalds in Lihue. A bunch of class of '86 classmates got together for an informal reunion. It was such a great experience... mainly reconnecting with old friends in a casual local karaoke bar setting. The floorpan is simple. It's one large room with a large bar on the opposite wall from the entrance. From what my friends told me, Troy's doesn't offer any dishes. However, you are allowed to bring your own. There are rows of tables that hints to luau party/community style seating. I also ran into Norvin, the big buffed security guy who is an old buddy from Kauai High School. I believe Troy's may be one of the few places that closes late. The service, the ambiance, and the customers are hard to beat. I don't even live on island but I'm making it a must to come and visit every time I visit Kauai. Conveniently located in Lihue and with plenty of parking I cannot turn the opportunity away to have a great time. Bring some darts, bring warmed up vocal cords, and bring food. The space is big and the bathrooms are well stocked. I believe this is the only bar on Kauai that stays open til 2:00 A.M. I'm on Kauai a bit for work, and it's night shift. On Oahu, the stores stop selling liquor at midnight. On Kauai, they stop at 11:00 P.M. This is the only place that you can go that is still open if you happen to get off "early" from the night shift. I've been here a couple of times now and here are some key points. It's a bar only. What that means is there is no food served. They will provide you with some free popcorn. Salty foods make the beers go down better. There is some sort of take out place next door, so you are able to order food there and bring it in. Not sure what time that place closes though. It can get a bit loud with the karaoke so it's hard to have conversation with the person sitting right next to you. This is not a white napkin kind of place, which is what I actually like about it. Other customers are quite friendly and start up conversations. I like that the staff pay attention to me even though I'm not a regular. Some local dive bars don't pay attention to newbies. Final thoughts, I hope to get off early and visit Troy's more often. read more

There are a few prerequisite requirements to truly love Troys: 1: must love karaoke 2: must not be pretentious That's it. This place stole our hearts. We arrived around 8:00, which was early for this place and it was us and a table full of alumni from the class of 1974. The bartender was friendly and made us feel at home, and we met Troy and had the same experience. My wife and I were initially dubious...karaoke bars are all about people willing to sing, and there weren't many when we got there. A couple (?) of Mai Tais in and we were singing and dancing. More people came in, and we were probably the only visiting tourists in the bar on a Saturday night (the place was mostly filled with locals). So much fun singing, dancing, and strong drinks. Some tips: 1: bring cash, preferably dollar bills. Each song is a dollar, which totally makes sense. It takes the guesswork out of tipping the KJ/bartender, and I think the machine actually requires $1 bills. 2: the bartender is also the KJ. If you're respectful, they may let you help with things like key changes (our bartender learned some things about the machine that night, I think). 3: bring food! They don't serve it (aside from free popcorn). If you wait too long, there is a McDonald's across the street. No shame in that game. The next time we're on Kauai, we will be at Troy's at least one night, singing and dancing our asses off. read more

We found this gem of a dart and karaoke bar on our vacation. I found it on Maps and since my husband's name is Troy we went. The owner is a really wonderful man and treated us like family. Wow. We stayed in Poipu and had a 10:30PM flight home. After checking out we finished up t shirt duties for the kids and looked for a local hole in the wall dive. This is it. Located in a strip mall we drove past it first time. Nothing fancy here. Lunch room style tables with folding chairs and 4 electronic dart boards on one side of the room. Seems they have a pretty big karaoke night. The happy hour was great. Was crowded for a Sat afternoon as a bunch of golfers were here hanging out after their round this morning. We walked up to the bar and a lady recognized there wasn't two seats together and kindly moved over and said sit here. Beer was cold and half of what we have been paying all week. Free popcorn and cold beer. Going to check out the place next door to grab some eats and bring it back here. We loved our night out singing karaoke and hanging with locals at Troy's! This place is not fancy--located in a strip mall, bar seating plus picnic tables and folding chairs--but it's totally great! The bartender and clientele were super friendly. Karaoke is available every night--it was slow to get started but Troy himself helped get things rolling. Be sure to bring cash to sing karaoke--it's $1 per song and you have to pay cash (although we only had $2 but Troy still let us keep singing--we left a mega tip on our tab at the end of the night to make up for it. It's definitely low-key karaoke--any song or style welcome and a very supportive crowd but don't expect the typical karaoke rotation (expect to sing all the songs you put in at once on a row!) and you might have to ask nicely if you can help change the key if needed. No food served except some excellent free hot popcorn but you can bring in any food you like. Enjoy a great night of super fun relaxed karaoke and great people!! read more

My friends and I were in search of a karaoke bar while visiting Kauai, and a local recommended Troy's. Troy's has many long, family style tables in the middle and smaller tables of to the side. Some may not like a family size table full of strangers, but I say, the more, the merrier. Mostly a locals' hangout, but there was a smattering of tourists as well. The drinks at Troy's were stiff, and they also gave out free popcorn later in the evening. If you wanted to sing, it was a dollar per song. There was no KJ, so we had to give our song requests to a waitress/bartender. No names were announced when it was your turn, just a list of song numbers on a screen. It was hard to recall the number of the song you requested. In addition, several people got to sing numerous songs in a row while others hadn't had the opportunity to sing at all. The microphones were on the tables, and you would grab one when it was your turn. FYI, there were no protective COVID coverings on the microphones. Most people sat at their tables when singing instead of going to a stage or standing up. Amazing and talented singers with a good mix between Hawaiian songs and traditional favorites. Definitely different than karaoke on the mainland, but it was still a fun experience. read more

hey manager troy, you need to hear me out on your karaoke setup. I've been in karaoke business over 15 years and this is what my experience is telling me about your setup. you need to get rid of those MIDI chinese music files and upgrade to CDG ZIP FILES. Also, those vocopro speakers are toast. grab some peavey pvx12's or some mackies in 12" size and the sound will be alot better. the ambience is great. we had great singers. even the bartender has a great falsetto rip. roll down the mic reverb/efx and it will all be good. why not make some appetizers to eat too? read more

This is a nice hole in the wall bar. I can not express how welcoming they are here. I came here on a Tuesday night and they had a great band playing called Wailoa paying. They sounded awesome. They played until 10 and were immediately followed by Karaoke. I had a few drinks while listening to the band and karaoke. The drinks are delicious and reasonably priced. You can get either a short or tall (double). My server was very friendly and attentive. I did not rock the mic on this evening, but Karaoke is $1 per song to sing. Given my prior experience in karaoke and performing, along with my love for Hawaiian music and supporting local artists, I did my research before my Kauai trip and came across Troy's knowing I would need to pay a visit. Upon entering the bar around 10 pm, I was met with the awesome sounds of a local band singing classic tunes. From the interlude discussions, you could tell they had been performing at Troy's for a long time and had a special bond with the establishment that made it even cooler! Following the group's final song, the bar opened its karaoke. My wife and I were not locals and had never been to Troy's before but were instantly embraced by the staff and locals alike. We had such a great time that we actually wanted to go back the next night but became too exhausted due to our crazy hikes during the trip.
