Big Easy BBQ - Do Not Waste Your Money or Time Eating Here A few days ago, I watched a well-known BBQ show that offered a simple rule: if there's no smoke coming from a BBQ restaurant, keep driving. Today, I ignored that advice and regretted it. A friend and I decided to try Big Easy BBQ for lunch instead of visiting one of our usual favorites. After reading positive reviews, we drove more than 30 minutes to see what the hype was about. The first warning sign was the nearly empty dining room at lunchtime. The second was the complete lack of that unmistakable BBQ aroma. Despite both red flags, we stayed. My friend ordered the St. Louis ribs with sides, and I ordered the half chicken with two sides. When I noticed he had barely touched his ribs, he handed me a piece to try. The meat was tough, dry, and tasted as though it had been cooked well in advance and reheated. Unfortunately, my chicken was no better. It also seemed old and reheated rather than freshly prepared. For sides, I chose dirty rice and Cajun BBQ beans. Neither tasted particularly fresh. The dirty rice was acceptable at first but quickly lost its appeal, while the beans were merely average. Having lived in New Orleans for five years, I know what good Cajun and BBQ-inspired food should taste like. This wasn't it. The highlights of the meal were my iced tea and my friend's French fries. Service was equally disappointing. The server checked on us only in passing and showed little interest in our experience. When we requested takeout boxes for the food we barely ate, there was no inquiry about why our meals were largely untouched. We both took our leftovers home, though neither of us was enthusiastic about them. The lesson here is simple: online reviews should never outweigh what your eyes, nose, and instincts are telling you. A busy dining room, the smell of smoke, and trusted recommendations are often better indicators than a collection of glowing ratings. As a final note, my friend and I normally pay separately, but I felt responsible for suggesting this restaurant and paid for both meals. I want to rate this 3.5 stars, but Yelp doesn't give you an option for partials. That said, I'll give a good & bad analysis. The Good: - Service is on point, attentive but not invasive, friendly & informative but not overly talkative - Mustard sauce has a depth of flavor that not many other varieties exhibit - Pulled pork bark is crispy without being overly jerky - The Manuel's choux has a full range of seasoning & texture, slightly sweet, very savory, creamy yet crunchy (from the corn), and even though the sauce was broken it didn't detract from the yumminess of the dish. - The refrigerator pickles have a unique profile that I haven't been able to pinpoint the particular aromatic ingredient that they season them with - The portion of pulled pork was more than enough to fill this diner's empty belly. - Bathrooms are tidy & clean, obviously checked by the staff with regularity - Numerous televisions to be able to watch sports from almost every seat in the house - Hardwood split logs that indicate the kitchen isn't trying to pass off charcoal briquettes and pellets as the smoke mechanism during the cooking process Fix the sticky tables and the mac n' cheese and this review would be 4 - 4.5 stars. The one I sat at had the stickiness you usually feel when you sit down at a dive bar that has had quite a few beer spills in its lifetime. - Parts of the pulled pork were a little dried out, so the BBQ sauce was necessary to make it palatable; not all of the serving was dried out, so a little more consistency would improve the overall grade. - They were out of collards (one of my favorite Southern sides), so I had to opt for the 5 cheese Mac n' cheese, which was very underwhelming, specifically lack of savoriness, savoriness, and overall satisfaction for a dish that has the guilty pleasure one expects out of its reputation. When you're greeted with a smile and good service throughout I was pretty sure the food was going to be a hit too. The Cajun Poutine was delicious. Huge portions but those skin on French fries with tender and juicy shredded pork, topped with brown gravy, melted mozzarella, bacon, and green onions was a hit. Note: you have your choice of meat on this one. Smoked chicken, pork or brisket. The Shrimp and Crawfish Étouffée was very good with plenty of shrimp crawfish and sausage. I thought it could have had a touch more spice but still a tasty dish. It's always nice when the owner comes out to check on you as you are enjoying your meal. Found this hidden gem for the first time today. It's a BBQ joint with a New Orleans/Cajun slant. Met the owner when we walked in and he and the staff were very welcoming. The food was all excellent. Great smoky flavor on the meats and just the right spice! The jalapeño hush puppies were some of the best I've had! Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and on top of everything we needed. Bonus: on Saturday and Sunday there's an extra brunch menu that adds some nice change of pace. I came for the Cajun and it was a bit disappointing. I ordered the Shrimp Po'Boy and it was a good serving with plump shrimp and a spicy remoulade sauce. I asked for dill pickles and they brought house pickles and pickled onions. Both had strong clove overtones and I didn't eat them. The bread is Leidenheimer, which is a softer bread and no crisp crust like the traditional French bread or baguettes used for some Po'Boys. The Maque Choux was soupy rather than creamy and it didn't have any Tasso or bacon to enhance the seasoning. The sweet corn and bell peppers were the dominant flavor with a plain hint of heat, but at least the corn was fresh tasting. It's a stingy portion served in a small ramekin and not worth the premium they charge for this dish. The dirty rice was rather boring although a better portion. Instead of sausage or Tasso to bring flavor, they use their BBQ. So there's a hint of smoky pork in the flavor. It was unfortunate that they don't offer French fries as a side item which is a de rigueur pairing with fried fish, seafood, and BBQ. Instead they give you a bag of Zapp's potato chips. I requested the Crawtator flavor, but unfortunately they were out. Service was very friendly and attentive. The owner/manager made visits to tables on this Friday night visit. Went here with my brother in law since he is always raving about the place! I ordered t a bowl of the Brunswick stew and some wings with a spicy sauce. The Brunswick stew came out and it is a strong contender for my favorite Brunswick stew. It is totally different than my other favorite, so comparing them does not make sense. I will say that this Brunswick stew was filled to the brim with meat and was amazingly satisfying with a little bit of spice. I can't wait for it to get cold out so I can just get a bowl of that to go for lunch. It is that good. The smoked wings came out and I was a tad disappointed that they did not have any smoky flavor. Don't get me wrong, they were still very good, but lacked the smokey flavor I was looking for. The service was perfect and my drink was never less than half full. The special for today was buy 6/10 wings get 6/10 free. We started out with (2) six wings and they came out plump and saucy. We did ask if we could get six sauced and six with just the Cajun rub, we were told no. The wings were very flavorful. I loved them, but my partner in crime, said he didn't like the bbq type wings compared to original non sauced ones. Next time, maybe we will try them with the sauce on the side. Onto the red beans and rice which I do make at home, from scratch. The beans are not crushed they are whole beans which to me, isn't traditional Nola red beans. The juice the beans were in was tasty but we had to ask for extra sausage because he got four slices. They brought that out right away. He said the cornbread was really good. I chose the brisket, sliced fatty, for my sandwich. The sandwich was so tender even toothless could enjoy it. Homemade pickles and onions were on point too. The 5 cheese Mac was good but tasted like it had been sitting out quite awhile. We missed Keith this time, but the wait staff was as always, very nice and attentive. Delicious 1st visit here! So glad we made a trip to stop in after hearing many great reviews. We came in on weekday night, there was a decent crowd. The restaurant has various tables, high tops, and booths with cute decor. We tried the jalapeño hushpuppies which were quite tasty. My dad had the half chicken, which you get to choose if you want white meat, dark meat, or mixed pulled and it comes with 2 sides. My mom had the pulled pork po boy which came with chips or you can substitute the side. I ordered the blackened chicken sandwich which came with chips as well, but I substituted for the spicy green beans. FANTASTIC. After a long day and with a long drive ahead of us, we happened across this local gem. The waitstaff was nice and helpful! After inquiring about their mouth-watering pickles, I was informed that they batch make them in-house with their own brine and the waitress brought me extra!! With an updated rustic vibe, and multiple TV's, it's the perfect place to grab some delicious Cajun food. I'm a foodie, and I grew up just outside Lake Charles, Louisiana. I'll start with that. :) Now to the review... I'd love to give this place more stars, and honestly, what's saving it from a lower rating are the following: 1.) The SERVICE was just wow. Hostesses were amazing, our server was awesome, and we didn't have to wait for a check. 2.) The remoulade. On a whim, I had the cajun tartar sauce (what?) replaced with remoulade (the standard for a Louisiana seafood po boy) on my shrimp po boy. So glad I did. I can't imagine what tartar sauce of any kind would've done to the flavor. 3.) The number of shrimp on that po boy. There were plenty. Now for the bad news: The boudin balls didn't have boudin in them. It was rice and pork and green onions, yes, but if there was any liver in there at all, I didn't see or taste it. It had such a thick, dark breading on it, most of what I could taste was oil/grease. My husband was with me. We ate 1.5 out of 4. We even tried breaking them open and just eating the inside, hoping to find the right flavor. Nope. My husband's pulled pork po boy was dry and had zero flavor. He ended up having to drown it in sauce. :( My shrimp po boy was good, but the tomatoes were diced (which means they fell out everywhere), and it could've used more sauce to soften the toasted bread. Buns were a tad small, but a good smashing helped hold everything in. It should had a good swipe of sauce on the bun rather than a light drizzle overtop, because that remoulade really and truly tied the whole sandwich together. Shrimp had a great-tasting, light breading and weren't overcooked. At least the chips were excellent--Zapps for the win!! As for ambiance, it's a bit dark inside, and I found myself craving a bit more Louisiana-themed décor, but it is what it is. It was at least VERY clean and had gorgeous TVs you could see from every angle. I usually go right for the gumbo at "Cajun" places, but I wanted to try the boudin this time. Sad I did. Hubs and I will give it one more shot--where I'll order the gumbo--and we'll see. If the gumbo falls flat, that's a hard no on a revisit. Gumbo is literally the end all be all for a Cajun place. Crossing my fingers the gumbo is good. Hoping the boudin was a fluke. I really miss the food from home, and having a place nearby that hits the mark will have me and the family in at least bi weekly. read more
