Tub of jook and 2 egg custards
    Debbie W.

Wanted to update - over the past few years, there are only 3 or so take out dim sum places (that isn't a restaurant) in Oakland Chinatown. Big Dish has a good variety but it does change. Not everything is available all the time. Today I bought 2 egg custard tarts and jook along with the fried donut (maybe called fritter?) and 2 baked pork buns. Surprisingly their prices has remained almost the same since 2022 - unlike the other places that increased their prices. My husband wanted to try the chicken feet (didn't take a picture because he ate it so quick) in sauce. It was $4 for 4 chicken feet and he only gave it a 3 star. The place is small but there are a few tables for you to sit and eat there if you want. So you have the option to eat there or take out. Depending on what time you go is less crowded than the other places as well. Workers are friendly and they had patience with me since I didn't quite understand what they were saying and showed me the options. Credit card accepted only if you purchase minimum of $25 or more.

Like to come here in the mornings for fresh, affordable dim sum. Nice variety, quick service, make sure to bring cash!

Quick service. Typically Chinese dim sum spot. Credit card over $25 Soft and tender bbq pork Shrimp dumpling- skin is thick. Wouldn't get again Rice with spare ribs and chicken feet. Rice is on the soggy/soft side. Less than $5. Will fill you up

What a classic dimsum takeout place right in the heart of Oakland Chinatown. I found the service to be quick and friendly. Price for most dimsum items was $1.10 each, including pork siu may, har gow (shrimp dumplings), chive dumplings, shrimp pearl dumplings, and many more. Har gow and chive dumplings were delicious, even though the skin/wrapper fell apart with it being a bit too soft. But the flavor was super spot on, especially the shrimp dumplings with good bamboo shoot crunchiness in each bite. To my surprise, my fave was the shrimp pearl dumplings which are essentially shrimp balls covered with a thin layer of sticky rice. Texture was amazing, taste was delicious! I'd get those again, and lots of them next time. I also got their bbq pork (by the pound), and price was pretty competitive at $10 per pound, compared to other competing businesses in the vicinity. The pork was succulent and tasty. I'd get that again for sure as well. I bought a handful of their pan fried sticky rice cake filled with red beans, but they were unfortunately just meh. The sticky rice was way too greasy/oily. $1.20 each. The the shop was very small, so there would not be any space for people to dine in at all.

Date: 1/28/2024 Time: 3:15 PM 63° Partly cloudy It was at the recommendation of my sister-in-law to get dim sum pastries from Big Dish instead of going to my usual go-to place in Oakland Chinatown. Okay. There is an event happening in the Pacific Renaissance Plaza. Live entertainment with dancers and singers on the performance stage in celebrating a Chinese New Year event is occurring. Here's my chance to check out Big Dish, which is half a block away. How delightful to see a pastry that my late mom used to prepare for my siblings and me when we were growing up. That pastry is called the chicken cage (gai loong). Oh those wonderful memories of consuming them. Gai loong was something my siblings and I enjoyed many moons ago. Visiting today, the selection was limited to what they have on hand. I can only guess I have to get to Big Dish earlier and not later in the afternoon. The menu board lists all sorts of pastries. Yummy! Big Dish also has roast duck, roast pig and chicken, congee, noodles, rice, etc. The red awning indicates what they serve, and the characters are written in Chinese. I can still read some of the characters, but writing them is a different story. Service is good. The employee was helpful. I basically bought what I wanted. However, I did not see any fried turnip cake. I also should have asked if they had bowl pastries. One of my sisters calls them "flying saucer pastry." They are white and glutinous, shaped like a flying saucer. (Woon dai go) Return visit? Yes! Yes! Yes!

Meh - super thick and wasn't fan of the filling

*** 3.5 stars -*** An option for dim sum located in Oakland Chinatown. Mom likes their steamed chicken and lotus buns here but no lotus buns today...oh well. Ordered a fried taro, steamed black bean pork spareribs over rice, steamed chicken bun and sesame ball. Sesame ball are not the best here as the dough is thick even when they come out fresh and warm from the kitchen. The filling of red bean is different like they added some dried orange peel..different but I prefer the traditional Their dim sum is good and (to me), better than the popular place on Franklin (spot with the peach on the window and noodles displayed). The issue I have at this spot is order taking is a bit chaotic so takes longer to get your items and leave Cash and credit card accepted. Some street parking if lucky so park in the Pacific Renaissance Plaza garage. Entrance on each side on Franklin and Webster between 10/11th Streets $6 for 2.75 hr parking on a Saturday

This place is a hit it mess, dim sum tastes good but someday- the flavors are off. Not the cleanest place but the dim sum is better tasting and way cheaper than the dim sum with the green signage (iykyk). Also, customer service is never great in Chinatown. But I'm not here for the service, just the food.

Very fresh and delicious. Cheap at a little over 1$ a piece. Parking can be hard but I just double parked for 2 min

This place is a bit divey but very local of course. They are a traditional Chinese BBQ place with some dim sum and baked goods. This is our go to place for the baked pork buns. They often come in two sizes, one large and one medium. They used to make them small as well. For $1.25 it's a meal! After dropping off hubby at airport, I decided to swing by Chinatown to see what was already open. Well, here I am! The pork buns are still warm after being at home for 45 minutes. And, the place of chicken feet was calling me so that is for later. The dough of the buns are nicely blasted and then. The slices of BBQ pork are just right. Not overly fat and not bogged down by onions. It's nice that they have their pork right there versus having to buy it elsewhere which many places have to do. They currently have pork and preserved egg congee for $4. That's a deal. As the last packed my goods, I saw a chicken bun on the menu so added this to my goods for $1.10. I love me a good "gai baw". Unfortunately this isn't it. Traditionally the bun has a piece of shitaki mushroom and a quarter of a hard boiled egg. None of that here and the dough wasn't tender enough for me. I'm still looking for one that meets my standards. So, don't be afraid....check them out. Cash is preferred and best to go early if you want the pork bun because they do run out.

Ask the Community - Big Dish Restaurant

Is the place closed down? My husband went by there this morning (20Jul) and the gate was down. He said there was a sign on the door but he couldn't read it because it was in Chinese.

a few days later it was reopened, so i assume maybe it was a brief break? now it's open again last time i went last wk a few times

How much does a whole roast pig cost? how far in advance do you have to put in an order for one?

Its about $250 and at least 3 days

My sister had remembered an article in the SF Chronicle's Food section which ranked Misty's Tasty as "top-ranked" and "best, authentic dim sum in the East Bay". Behind a graffiti'd exterior, you enter a smaller restaurant than most and it was definitely buzzing. We got there early-ish(btw 1030 & 1100) and there was already a short waitlist. There is nothing fancy about this place and don't expect white table cloths and napkins. Once seated, be ready to order off a paper menu which also doubles as their to-go menu. Our selection consisted of * 2 orders of snowy Baked BBQ Pork buns * Pea sprout dumpling w shrimp * Steamed Shrimp dumpling (Har Gow) * Steamed spareribs in black bean sauce * Preserved meat w rice in a claypot * Rice noodle roll w beef cilantro *Bean curd skin rolls (Fu Pei Guen) * Chicken feet w Peking Sauce * Deep fried meat dumpling (Ham Sui Gok) * Deep Fried Taro dumpling (Wu Goo) * Pork and Shrimp dumpling (Sui Mai) The service was fast as each dish came out "piping hot". Each dish is categorize under Small, Medium, Large and X-tra Large. When we were leaving, there must have been 20+ folks waiting We will definitely return to try other options. Each item is priced appropriately, good portions and tasty!!

We both ordered one dish of Sui Mai to go so we could try it out. My wife and I actually liked the taste, texture and flavor. The dish includes 4 Sui Mai for $7.99 but the menu shows $6.45 for the dish so a bit confused on the price difference. We plan to go back but dine in next time so we can try the other many dishes. Based upon the Sui Mai, this is definitely worth trying out for Dim Sum. I forgot to take pictures of the Sui Mai but I did take pictures of the menus and restaurant. Review Update Paragraph: Correction to my original post, I can't do math in my head. We paid $14.99 for two orders which comes out to $7.50 each so I'm guessing the difference between the Owner's response and what we paid might be for using a credit card.

It's getting harder to find places in the Bay Area that still do it this way, mostly because restaurants just don't have the space anymore for carts to weave between tightly packed tables. That alone makes this place feel a little special. The food itself tastes fresh, and yes, the hot sauce passes the test. I've had a few unfortunate (and slightly traumatizing) encounters with off-tasting sauces during the pandemic, so now I always do a cautious smell-and-taste check first. They also serve "tofu fa" (tofu pudding) with a sweet ginger syrup, which was a pleasant surprise. It's one of my favorite desserts and not something you see often at dim sum spots these days since it's not in high demand. Definitely brought back some nostalgic, childhood vibes. Just a heads up, this place gets busy quickly. If you can, try to arrive within the first hour after opening. Otherwise, be prepared to wait a bit, it's popular for a reason.

Black bean spareribs are not really my thing, and I don't do chicken feet, but I think the bf liked both. I did enjoy the sweet and sour spareribs, which you don't see as often at dim sum. We organized a large gathering of over 40 people for a business meeting, expecting at least a basic level of accommodation. Last year, this same restaurant had no issue providing WiFi access, which made it a viable option for professional use. This time, they flatly refused to share WiFi, offering no reasonable explanation or alternative. For a business group of that size, this is not a small inconvenience, it completely undermines the ability to coordinate, communicate, and function effectively. We turned some of our party away so the restaurant actually lost business. What makes this worse is the inconsistency. If the service was available before, there is no justification for the abrupt change, especially without any effort to work with a paying group of this scale. It sends a clear message that they are not interested in supporting business clients, regardless of group size or prior relationship. If you are planning any kind of professional gathering or need even minimal flexibility from the restaurant, I would strongly suggest looking elsewhere. This was a frustrating and avoidable experience that reflects poorly on their management and customer service. The food was okay, last year the room was perfectly decorated this year it looked like it was set up for a wedding which was rather odd for a business meeting as well.

I loved how the veggies were sauteed but remained a little crunchy. I love when my veggies aren't completely cooked to death. Scallion Lamb - Like the name suggests, tons of thinly sliced lamb, cooked up with every scallion ever! This was really yummy when we first had it, but this was excellent after a few hours when the flavors married together. We had all of this and some beers! Such a perfect meal for a perfect rainy day.

We ordered: #20 Steamed BBQ Pork Bun #27 Steamed Sticky Rice Bun #2 Shu Mai #4 Chicken Shu Mai #6 Shark Fin Dumpling Favorites? Definitely the Shark Fin Dumpling and BBQ Pork Bao. Service: It's Chinatown, so if you don't speak the language, no worries--they have a simple English menu with numbered items that makes ordering easy for everyone. It's a cool cultural vibe for sure! We had a massive order (feeding a party of 8), but they were still kind, patient, and efficient. Helpful tip: When lining up, be mindful of neighboring businesses. The owner next door did ask the line to shift away from her entrance, which was totally understandable. BONUS: They accept Apple Pay. We will absolutely return on our next trip. If you're visiting the area, we parked at Chinatown Parking for a very reasonable price, and it was an easy walk to all the restaurants we wanted to try. Pro tip: Make an afternoon of it. Grab your food and enjoy it at the local park just south of the restaurant.

After walking around to visit the many vendors, I decided to have lunch at Yung Kee on the corner of 9th & Webster Streets. One of my friends has dined here and recommended this restaurant for lunch. After perusing the menu, the choices were narrowed to chicken congee or shrimp and scrambled eggs over rice. The congee would have been good and the weather was cool. However, the last time I had shrimp and scrambled eggs over rice was at a Chinese restaurant in San Francisco near my job in the Civic Center area over 12 years ago. Eats: shrimp and scrambled eggs over rice and a pot of hot tea. Drizzled with some soy sauce, my dish was delicious. The hot tea was perfect, flavorful and soothing when I drank about 5 cups. This was total comfort food and beverage that I almost doze off in the restaurant. For $15, it was a good deal. The only drawback was one of the employees was mopping the floor when I was eating my lunch. I will return in the future to have lunch again. I might even order food to go for dinner.
