    Big Chicken

3:30 on a Friday. The place is empty. Not a signal table is clean. Chicken is good as a sandwich but not great if you eat the strip alone the spice is a bit overwhelming. Fries are okay. Portions are good except the soda is small for a combo that cost nearly $13. No condiments available. Have to ask. And only got 3 small packs for the size of the fries. They asking you would like to tip when you pay yet the place is not well cared for. Much better options out there at better prices. Fast food places have to do a better job of keeping up on cleanliness.

It has been tough times for the purveyors of chicken sandwiches. First, my favorite MA chicken joint closed last month - Mother Clucker's. Then, it was an off day at Dave's Hot Chicken from a meal perspective and one of the first times they let me down. And with that, I ventured on a trek to Shaq's Big Chicken at the Northshore Mall. I mean, it's Shaquille O'Neal, right? My baseline I compare all hot chicken sandwiches by is Hattie's in Nashville Tennessee as they are the gold standard. I realized when I entered, it was a franchise fast food establishment just by the look of it. Still only weeks from its grand opening, they were still working out the kinks. The service staff seemed out of sorts trying to figure out which tickets were for dine-in versus take out as the person at the register kept forgetting to ask at checkout. I ordered the Original Combo Meal so I could base my review on the quality of the chicken versus all the other accompaniments that were part of their other choices. We also had a macaroni and cheese and a popcorn chicken children's meal. The chicken in my sandwich was on the thin side. A little thinner than a Chick Fil-A breaded chicken and half the size of a Mother Clucker's chicken. The. chicken was not bad - not as moist/juicy as I would have wanted but it was also thinner and could have led to this result. It was crispy. The pickles on the sandwich were good. The original sauce was better than I expected with a very slight hint of spice. The French fries probably would have been better from a fryer oil change as they seemed a little tired and greasy and not what one would expect - if you ever had the original Harrison's Roast Beef crinkle cut fries, you'd know what I mean. My son made quick work of his popcorn chicken and seemed to like the bbq dipping sauce quite a bit. He also liked the ice cream sundae although with Holy Cow right down the street, this was a pedantic vanilla ice cream and nothing to rave about. No one ate more than a bite of the macaroni and cheese which again, smacks of a bland affair. All-in-all, I'd give it 3 - 3 1/2 stars and would come back just to try some of the other signature sandwiches now that I have a baseline for this restaurant to measure against. Price wise, I was surprised by how inexpensive this was. With Mother Clucker's now gone and out of the top spot in MA, I'd move this into my Top 5 local chicken places behind Dave's Hot Chicken and ahead of Crown Fried chicken and Frangio's. I'd rather go here than Flip The Bird as their staff and service is still horrible in that same area and because it's worth exploring the menu more.

**Shaq Attack Sandwich:** The Shaq Attack sandwich left a mixed impression. It suffered from a bit of a quality control issue as the patty wasn't as crispy as it should have been, though it did sit in the car for an hour before I got to it. The patty was overly salty, almost to the point of giving someone hypertension. However, the onion and jalapeño added a refreshing touch, although their brightness didn't quite complement the chicken. My boyfriend, rated this sandwich a 9 out of 10, while I gave it a 6.5 to 7 out of 10. Each sandwich cost $10, which I wasn't thrilled about considering the quality. **Ultimate Sandwich:** The Ultimate sandwich, which included crispy onion and macaroni and cheese, was much saltier than the Shaq Attack. Despite this, I preferred it, especially after adding some of the provided barbecue sauce. We received two barbecue sauces: Carolina and Memphis. Both of ud preferred the Carolina sauce, which tied the flavors of the sandwich together better. The macaroni and cheese, however, was underwhelming. Shaq is from the South--has he not heard of using pepper and other seasonings? Despite this, my boyfriend rated this sandwich an 8 out of 10, and I agree that an 8 out of 10 is fair. Also, the french fries are incredibly underwhelming, not even worth the calories.

    Service anyone?

It's a pretty lame menu. Not a lot of options. And they only have a few types of crappy pepsi options. More or less one plain chicken, three spicy, one colostomy bag covered in fries and Mac and cheese, and one BBQ. Very unoriginal. Sides all suck. This place wasn't clean either. There are much better and less expensive chicken places all over the place. No need to come here unless you crave poor quality and unoriginal meals. Oh ... and I waited at the counter ungreeted in a nearly empty restaurant for about 5 minutes so the service is as lame as the food. Sandwichs are small too. No where near as good as flip the bird.

Great service! Quiet around 5pm on a Tuesday, there was no line, but it was hard to find. It's outside the Northshore Mall, you can't get to it from inside the mall

The service was pretty good. The food was just alright. I would eat here again bit it's not something I would rush to eat again.

The short version: they take pride in their product and it turns out well above the usual. Friendly family operation. -- Buffalo Wings: Not gargantuan, but good size. Good contrast between crisp skin and tender inner flesh. Decent juiciness on the drums and very good juiciness on the flats. Tasty sauce. -- Fries: When I learned they're not fresh hand-cut, the owner was kind enough to provide a small sample to try. A decent rendition for frozen.  -- Nashville Hot Wings: Tried on the second visit, as a combo with coleslaw and split with an eating buddy. A clinical presentation of technical wings perfection, with each piece crisp outside, tender and juicy inside, and generously coated but not overloaded with fresh, tasty wing sauce. A little grit to this one to deliver dry spices as well as liquid, and a noticeable amount of heat that complemented nicely. A joy to view and a joy to eat. -- Mango Habanero Hot Wings: Tried on the second visit, as a combo with onion rings and split with an eating buddy. More technical perfection and similar praise for the sauce, which balances sweet and heat nicely. Even nicer was a little garnish of mango on top. Like the Nashville Hot, these were superb. (And if you check my other reviews, you'll see that I don't go throwing around compliments and 5-star reviews to just anyone.) -- Onion Rings: A frozen product, but crisp, not greasy, and seasoned. Not seafood shack or roast beef joint quality, but good for what it was. -- Coleslaw: A larger-than-expected serving with an unexpected flavor. Crisp, creamy, but with a certain something or somethings that begged for more forkfuls. Seeds (I think caraway) and fruit (cranberries and apples) added oomph and a floral component. If I didn't have plans after, I'd have bought more to take home. Friendly, hands-on owner who puts his heart and soul into the food, from the presentation (including a stainless steel bone dish and plastic gloves) to the pinpoint technical excellence of the wings (nailed the crisp, the juiciness, the right amount of sauce) to the creativity (the mango garnish; apples and cranberries in the coleslaw). Even without table service, comfy booths, and beer, an easy 5.

I ordered at the counter and took the 2 top high table right by the window. I ordered the House Dog and a side of waffle fries that came with their house made honey ketchup. The food was ready pretty quickly and it looked really good as I brought it back to my table. The House dog is listed as being topped with chopped bacon, grilled onions and their spicy pub style mustard. Overall it was really good. The onions weren't as cooked as much as I would have liked them to be and some of the onion pieces were pretty big. I thought the mustard was great and really wanted more of that on the dog. I know it looks like plenty in the picture but I still wanted more. The bun was that perfect split top New England bun that was perfectly toasted on both sides. The fries were good. Well-seasoned. I couldn't tell that anything was different about the ketchup. I did want more than what was given in the little portioned cup that they provided. I'd return to Chicken & The Pig and I'd definitely try other hot dog variations and definitely get one of the chicken sandwiches.
