Decided to go back and try again after being closed for 9 days. The reopening featured the Breakfast Bar on both Saturday and Sunday this holiday weekend. Arrived Sunday same dirt, chaos and slow chefs. NO Breakfast Bar! Waitress stated they won't get a food truck until Tuesday! Once again poor management. Closed for 9 days and manager failed to order or prepare. We ordered eggs, meat and hash browns; simple order, right? After 15 minutes waitress returns saying they are OUT OF HASH BROWNS(3 days after reopening). Options was French fries! Imagine putting your over easy eggs on top of French fries. We went with the fries. 20 minutes later our breakfast came. French fries cold and greasy, hotcakes cold. Waitress gave us 20% off our bill. We left disappointed and disgusted. There had been no improvement to the dining area or seats, windows filthy, sticky floors. No thank you. We will return to the STEP INN RESTAURANT where we receive excellent food, service and friendly (not hostile) atmosphere. read more

A buddy and I stopped by for a quick dinner. We both ordered spaghetti and meat sauce with a side salad. Thought that would be quick. Salad came out quick and was a decent salad. Waited for the spaghetti for 45 minutes. A table close to us left. The kids in the booth behind me were restless. We left after 50 minutes. It was Memorial Weekend Sunday so maybe it a short staff. we were there for dinner 6 pm Sunday, asked for a table, all were empty, she said they're closed you'll have to take a booth. I am having back surgery, explained we couldn't do a booth, nothing changed, we left and won't be back. We are local, a shame tl lose another restaurant for us but we've had it. read more

My bad review is only for the service from the hostesses. We had a hour wait before we were seated. The hostess first told us they would seat us when the larger tables of 2 left. She would 1st seat the party of 2 the seat us. While we continue to wait the hostess seat several parties of 2. We continued to wait. Then we asked another hostess if we could split up our group. She said they were waiting for the kitchen to get caught up. We waited an hour to be seated. The hostess set all the menus on the 1st table and said "here are your tables" and stormed away. Once the waitress realized we were waiting an hour our service was great. The waitress Courtney took our order right away and apologized for the wait. Many people left due to no hostess coming to seat anyone. By the time we were seated the rush was over and everyone was eating. read more

This restaurant's interior is run down and dated. The upholstery on booths are ripped and stained. When you 'eat out' it is important that the resturant is clean and in good repair. It appears these factors are unimportant to the owners. The food is standard big boy fare, as to be expected in all big boy restaurants. Service was good but the obvious neglect in this resturants appearance resulted in an unpleasant experience. Additionally, cleanliness, other than the wiped down table tops was questionable. This place, especially the salad bar area and sneeze guard was unappetizing. Floor, moldings, womans bathroom, also questionable. read more

The one waitress was really trying. The two younger women didn't care one bit. Their attitudes were beyond disrespectful. As for the food...burnt! Went in for breakfast on 9/12/23 and stood at the greet station for 6 minutes, no one greeted us, made eye contact or even acknowledged our existence. One of the 3 waitresses came in from a cigarette break & I thought she must be the hostesses but she took off her sweater and ignored us too. We left hungry without so much as a "be right there or a one minute please" It wasn't busy or full and they seemed decently staffed. I just don't get it. While we have dined here before , tonight we decided to try their buffet. Paid 19.00 per person . Big mistake. Food was horrible. Lasagna made with what looked like American cheese and hardly no sauce. Meatloaf dry, although they had gravy to rectify that. Ham with pineapple tasted medicinal. Yuck! Don't waste your time or money! 3 of us went to get a late dinner at 8:25pm on a Tuesday night. There were 2 waitresses, 1 hostess/bus boy, cook and manager. Only a table of 8 and a table of 4 in the whole restaurant. We ordered, and after 1/2 hour waitress came over and said sorry for the long wait but a large table (8) came in just before you and it shouldn't be much longer. Was there about a month ago. Late August. Don't remember the exact date. Been busy or I would have posted a review sooner. Stopped by one evening for dinner. pulled in and saw the sign that said "closed for cleaning and maintenance." OK, great time to be closed right at dinner time, on a weeknight . Well, we went somewhere else. came back for Breakfast a few days later on Saturday. They were open, but we were greeted and the door by a young hostess who told us "We are holding at the door right now and not seating anyone, because so many people came in and the kitchen and waitresses are overwhelmed". Interesting because there were empty tables, and it was the breakfast rush. Why say it like that? why not just say there is a wait? And why not be prepared when its the middle of breakfast time? you are a restaurant and you get overwhelmed when a lot of people come in at peak meal hours? LOL. She said she had no idea how long it would be, but she would ask the waitress if she thought she could handle another table. Then the hostess just never came back and left us standing there for a long time. My daughter finally went in and tracked her down and she said; "Oh the waitress said no she wasn't comfortable having you seated". Huh? So, 2 strikes, we bailed. I can understand you may be understaffed or whatever, but the staff and customer (non)service here are a mess! So sad, because we used to love this place from as far back as thee late 70s. Idk even know where to start. We had just got into town and we're headed grocery shopping and decided to stop in before grocery shopping. If we were smart we would of left before even being seated it took about 7 minutes to be acknowledged and 10 to be seated which instead of someone stepping up and seating us we had to wait for the host too finish what looked like checking the date on change in the drawer to see if there was any rare coins in the drawer then another 10 minutes for someone to come over. Thee good...I got breakfast (the classic blockbuster) for 8.99 it wouldn't feed a toddler and the food quality was about the worst I'd ever seen. Gordon Ramsay couldn't of made that taste good. Pretty sure it was ready to eat bacon, two tiny pieces of sausage, the driest skimp order of hash browns I'd ever seen and poorly made scrambled eggs. (If your charging 8.99 for a basic breakfast you better put quality on the plate) Then our waitress (who I am guessing is new) asked if I wanted more coffee I said no we're all set I was surprised she didn't give us the check (which makes me think she's new) I just figured she was learning and had to grab it. We then proceeded to wait 20-30 minutes before I just pulled out cash left it one the table and left. As all this was going on several tables walked out. Now I really don't usually do this and you can check my other reviews And people are going read this and what a jerk use covid and etc but I am sorry you don't get screw up literally everything in the experience and blame covid... down state I see bars / restaurants that are actually short handed pull off way better service and food quality (they had four servers a busy boy and a manager on duty (if you want to call her that) and the place isn't very big. I wouldn't go back if you paid me and I'd encourage you to just go to Walmart and cook if this place is still your only option. Hell you'd be better off going to McDonald's across the street. I know the owner of big boy and will be addressing this with him when I return. Note 1: I'm fairly confident the waitress was new and in training and might of gotten fed to the wolves. She was very nice and pleasant and I believe trying her best. for some reason she had a couple tables (including us) all the way upfront and tables all the way at the in the back. Visiting from Metro Detroit over the 4th of July weekend. Waited about 5 mins for a host to even appear at the stand. Sat down and waited about 15 mins, no one ever came. Table in front of was sat at the same time we did, and were able to order drink and food. A busser was cleaning the table behind us and I asked her if we could get some waters. Our supposed waitress then passed through the area, and the busser communicated our request to her. The waitress then snapped about being to busy and not having enough time. We walked out. Understanding that many restaurants are still short staffed, we were patient. The smart ass comments from staff for simply asking for water isn't okay. read more

I haven't been to a Big Boy since I was in middle school and I don't think I'll be back. It was really dingy looking inside and the salad bar kind of looked diseased. I usually opt for salad bars at any restaurant I go to, but not this one. Nope. Couldn't pay me to eat that. The menu itself looked pretty appetizing, but all I wanted were some potato pancakes and eggs. I felt like I had the easiest order out of the group. Just plop some shredded potatoes on a griddle and let them fry. Simple. There was nothing simple about this place. All the servers looked like they were confused, running from here to there and yelling at the kitchen staff about orders. At the 35-minute mark, my coworkers received their food, but not little ol' Urs. Mind you, we went to Big Boy because while we wanted a quick meal, we didn't want McDonald's. Restaurant chains like BB are quick about serving and getting you out the door. What happened with this one? Apparently, our waitress had put my order in incorrectly and I had to wait another 10 minutes. I thought she was new or something, but then I peeped the shift manager name badge she was sporting. Girl, bye. The potato pancakes were good, but would have been even better if I had the time to enjoy them. I had to wolf down my food and leave for our next assignment. I absolutely love their codfish sandwich and onion rings. The salad bar was fresh and delicious. The coffee is so delicious. Very nice waitress, she's a sweetheart. All of the staff are friendly. Now I think I will go give the Big Boy by the road a slap on the butt and tickle his belly. He has the same pose and will never move. Maybe make him do a handstand. Went to Big Boy 0017 in Cheboygan, MI on 09/11/2019 for Son's 30th Birthday. All meals served were COLD; Took forever even to get drinks, food took way to long to get. We had 4 kids with us and the wait was too much for them....we were just about ready to leave when finally our COLD food came out. The 8 year old with us said " Grandma, You didn't want hot food, did you?" The manager gave us a whole 10% off our meal (Didn't even bother to come out). Sent the waitress out with the bill. My first Big Boy experience, enjoyed when I was in Cheboygan for a wedding a couple of summers ago. Apparently these restaurants are all over Michigan, kind of like Friendly's in New England or Waffle House down south. I went with a large group on the weekend, when they were offering the all-you-can-eat buffet. As I recall, everything I plopped into my plate was passable if not quality diner-style breakfast food. But the most fun was taking photos outside with the Big Boy statue in the parking lot. read more

I scheduled a pickup for 9am on a Sunday and when I arrived to pick it up, they told me the kitchen opened at 9 and it would be another 15-20 minutes. However, 15 minutes later they said it would be another 15-20 minutes because they "couldn't control the kitchen". Wouldn't it have made sense to prioritize that order and try to please an angry customer? No, they just went about their business as if it was my problem. I finally demanded they cancel the order, which took another 10 minutes. They were totally incompetent, and had zero customer service skills. Avoid online orders at all cost. read more

Server - Tanya - was friendly and quick. Food was good, but "greeter" Heather was awful. Watched me try to open/ get in doors while on crutches and did NOT offer to help - didn't even make a token gesture to hold the door for me! I watched as she would walk away from customers and drop menus on the table and they didn't know whether they should follow her or wait because she would talk to them as she walked away so they couldn't hear her. Other than her, it was fine. You'd think across the street from Northern Michigan Regional Hospital they'd be more considerate of customers with physical limitations (on crutches or hard of hearing), but apparently not. They need to get a new hostess before she puts them out of business permanently! read more

I've never felt the need to review a Big Boy before, but I stopped in here for lunch with my uncle several days ago, and my tuna melt was out of this world. This sounds odd for a tuna melt, doesn't it? Literally, it was the best I've ever had.
