I came here to pick up some waterproof boots with all the rain that we've been hit with. Big 5 provides merchandise for low to mid price points, but brand variation leaves a lot to be desired The gentleman working the footwear section was really helpful with me and another shopper who was coming in from out of town also looking for footwear to deal with inclement weather. So far, the boots have held up quite nicely even when walking into some deep puddles. They've kept my feet dry which is pretty awesome. The premise itself feels dated even though it's not run down. Merchandise also feels densely packed, but then again, it's probably always been like this ever since I was a kid. Come in. Get what you need. And leave with low expectations. read more

Soon as I walked in, girl at the front had major attitude. Co worker tried to make excuses and said she has the flu. First of all why is she at work but irregardless, her bad attitude made us leave and go to the one in San Dimas. I asked her for help in the show dept and she just looked at me not saying a word. The assistant manager is so rude. I went in to exchange my daughter's softball helmet. I didn't have a receipt because my husband forgot to give it to me. The assistant manager seemed so annoyed that she had to do an exchange. I ended up leaving because of her bad customer service. The cashier that was there was really nice though. My experience would've been a lot different if the cashier would've been able to to help me. read more

I went in looking to shop around for a folding knife. The lady behind the counter was on the phone and had cardboard on the display counter, mostly blocky my view of the knives. I said nothing and just crouched down to shop... she proceeds to continue to move the cardboard to further block my view... I go for a walk around the store and come back to see that most of the counter had been cleared! So I shop around. And this tiny, sad, angry little gnome of a woman proceeds to huff and puff and roll her eyes and slam the cardboard from the counter to the floor.... Wtf? I'm sorry if my quiet shopping is bothering you. You fucking troll. So I went to M&I Surplus and they were super helpful and were SO EAGER to show me their merchandise. Was so happy to see a pair that's not all bright and flashy, on sale and when you sign up for their email list, got 10% off at checkout today! This is a good store, it's just unfortunate it happens to be located in a bad neighborhood. Since the 1970's Big 5 has been my go to favorite sporting good store and I have spent countless $ at Big 5. Particularly the Pasadena location on Colorado Blvd. at Rosemead. Been here to the Pomona Big 5 several times and have purchased many things here as well (shoes, camping stuff, clothes, etc..). Quality customer service has always been lacking (understaffed), but they have a good selection of merchandise and Big 5 prices have always been reasonable. The neighborhood of this Pomona store is the biggest problem. Is a breeding ground for thugs, homeless, vagrants, derelicts, tweakers, hoodlums, beggars, troublemaker types hanging/loitering in this area. Actually... the entire stretch of Foothill between Garey Ave and Town Ave. is terrible and needs to be seriously cleaned up from all the riff raff. A dollar store directly next door to the Big 5 doesn't exactly improve the quality of the neighborhood either. Please patronize Big 5 but for personal safety, I suggest you only go here in the daytime and always be aware of your surroundings and also make sure you lock your car doors. The area is a little ghetto but I needed some weight plates. Called several Big 5 stores and this one was supposed to have about 6-7 pieces left. I actually needed 3 but what they didn't mention over the phone was that you are limited to 1 set (2 pieces). Bummer. read more

Can't give this store anything above two stars. The young man with black hair that works here is a bit of a jerk. He pretends to be helpful but when you ask him a question he's rude and snooty. He made two tactless comments to me and my wifey. They wouldnt let us use the restroom so we had to go pee on the big five sign out front. Not much we could do there other than desecrate their property. The only thing this store has going for it was the older lady who seems to be a manager. She at least is helpful and has a sense of humor. Not a bad lady at all! read more

In a store slammed with customers 15 min before closing, the last experience I expected was helpfulness and kindness from an employee. I expected a heavy wait time and eye rolls and grumbles from employees who just wanted to get home. Instead, I was met with an employee names "Angel" who seemed to share in my enthusiasm for finding exactly what I needed. He humbly admitted where he was unsure, but enthusiastically put an effort into finding exactly what I needed. Angel was sincere and helpful and he followed up with me before I checked out. He was BUSY, but I witnessed him giving equal care and attention to all of the customers. He was a refreshing employee to come across. I am so thankful for him. Thanks, Angel! Terrible. Terrible. Terrible. Arrived an hour before closing and attendant refused to let me take the FSC exam. He said it was "too late," because it really takes two minutes (thirty question test) to answer each question. Was told that I could come back the following day but there wasn't a guarantee I'd be able to take the exam because "people making purchases are priority." The watershoes I bought is marked $24.99 on the tag and is on sale for $19.99 in this weeks flier but the receipt shows I was charged $29.99. I will be back tomorrow. read more

I've had good luck at this store. The people are sharp, knowledgeable and helpful. The Manager has been very helpful advising me about coupons which I have been able to download on my I-phone in order to get good deals. They have been good about locating sales items in other stores when they were sold out (slippers and shoes, as well as ammunition). At my age, I don't go camping anymore, but I find this store well stocked with other useful items, and the staff helpful and very friendly. Their attention to detail and the effort they make to have a well stocked, clean and well ordered store make it a pleasant experience to shop there. More often than not, they have good prices. Came here with my bf for their black Friday sale. I got an adorable pair of moccasins-type shoes and a knit pair of slippers as a gift for my mom-in-law. After wearing my moccasins for a few hours, I realized they were going to break in and fit a little too big, they were already starting to flip/flop off my heels. I decided to exchange them, along with the knit slippers because I decided to get her the moccasins as well. They didn't have our sizes at this location, but the gentleman at the register was kind enough to look in the system for the nearest location that did have our sizes. The manager was also behind the counter, and I asked her if I would have a problem exchanging the shoes because when I bought them on black Friday, the system was down and they had to write out manual receipts. She was very knowledgeable and assured me it wouldn't be a problem. Both employees were very nice and helpful and made this whole experience a breeze. When I went to the other location for the exchange, the cashier there was also very nice. I really wish I would've gotten their names because they were all very helpful and pleasant. read more
