I always shopped at Big 5 for running shoes, shorts, tank tops, sports equipment and fishing gear and probably spent thousands of dollars over the last decade but today I decided take my business online because of bad customer experience. The staff and managers are unhelpful, and they don't care if you don't come back! They do nothing to improve that. I was looking for a sabiki fishing lure and went to the front to ask for assistance and they said that someone would be there to assist. I waited but no one came over to help. I have bought dozens of sabiki lures in the in the past from this store so I went back to the front staff said they don't have them anymore. I'm so tired of Apathy doesn't sell but only motivates customers to walk out! Your in-store staff doesn't like customers but the feeling is mutual! I bought a sabiki lure elsewhere and will buy sporting goods on Amazon free from having to endure inept, non-service, no can do BS from in-store staff. read more

I called to inquire about a rash guard shirt, the lady checked and told me they have two left in stock and I was happy to drive out to get the one I needed. Drove 15 minutes out of my way, wasted gas only to get here and have them tell me they have it but it's "put away" and not on the floor. She didn't even attempt to actually look for the item and recommended other items that aren't the same material. Why would you tell me you have two in stock on the phone? I didn't talk to a sales associate in purchasing these Rollerblades. I just did my own research online on Yelp.com before I drove over to this store location. I needed to buy one pair of Rollerblades, a Helmet, Knee Pads, Leather Gloves and a comfortable Outfit to wear when I went Rollerblading like a Sports Bra, and Bike Shorts. I looked around this store to make sure I didn't miss anything. I saw this one pair of Rollerblades the name brand is called VIABLADE PARKWAY Women's size 7 that is my regular shoe size in the medium size. The color I really pretty it is a two tone color which is Black and Gold Accent. This pair of rollerblades are made in Italy. I know that these Rollerblades are a really good quality In-Line Skates because these are manufactured in Italy. Anything made in Italy is a good product. The price of these Rollerblades was not on sale and the regular price of $100.00. That is an expensive price for these Rollerblades but I paid that price because I wanted to have good In-Line Skates and a name brand product that is safer for me to use when I go rollerblading at the Tamarack State Beach. I bought Rollerblades, a BACKSAC which is a backpack and clothing to wear when I do this fun activity. The total cost that I have spent is $117.00. read more

This is my backup location, not that there's anything wrong with it. It is just a little further from my house and they do tend to have more things in stock than the other locations. They have room outside on the sidewalk to display items on clearance racks and sale racks which the Vista location doesn't do. The employees are very nice and friendly and you can usually find what you want. When they have specials and things on sales, the prices are really good. We come here a lot but mostly when my sons played a lot of sports. It's also one of the few places in town where you can buy a swimsuit any time of year without spending a fortune. Purchases take priority over returns even if you've been waiting patiently in line. read more

I like Big 5 because they always have great deals, nice little shooting section and a small archery section. I wish there were more locations because this one is out of the way for me. This Big 5 has been here for a long time which is saying something because if they weren't doing so well they would have probably moved. If you come and buy stuff when there's no sale yes the prices are pretty high. When there is a sale you will see a lot of people shopping because sometimes the prices and products are better then Walmart. For a Big 5 I'm surprised about their shooting supplies from safety glasses, cleaning solvents and targets. Their ammo usually is pretty pricey but they do have a lot to choose but it's never what I need. Overall I like Big 5 but you have to catch them when their having a sale otherwise it's too pricey. I should have started my sports apparel / equipment shopping here first. Big 5 is a small store, but it's cheaper than the super centers like Sports Authority and Dicks. Unfortunately I bought most of my kid's soccer supplies at SA. The busiest section of Big 5 was the shoe area, and for good reason! I wasn't really looking for shoes but the shoe manager said they were having a clearance sale.. Skeptical on how Big 5 defined "clearance prices" I was pleasantly surprised to find cool looking kids shoes at 12 bucks a pair after discounts. Now, these weren't the best quality shows ( Airwalk) but they were on par with Payless. At 12 bucks I bought a few sizes for each kid. - Soccer balls were a few bucks cheaper here, shin guards were a few bucks cheaper, and there was a great selection of soccer socks for girls here. - Security turn-style when you enter the sales floor. - Need a key to use the restroom - Piped in music was calming like Colbie Caillat and 80's soft pop. read more

Big 5 is my go-to place when I need new shoes as they usually have the type I'm looking for at a sales price that isn't triple digits (that's simply too much for shoes in my book). Went here last weekend and Chris was quick to offer his help. Asked me what I was looking for, offered a couple suggestions and quickly found the shoes at the size I was looking for. While I was trying them on, Chris hustled to help everyone around, even outside of the shoe area. Last Saturday (November 26th) I went to Big 5 to buy sneakers. Chris V. helped me and I tried on about a dozen sneakers. Due to fact that I have very wide feet (even the 4E's were narrow) I was not able to find a sneaker that fit well. Chris V. provided exceptional service. He brought out four pairs at a time. He was very knowledgeable about sneakers and proper fit. Hands down he is the best shoe saleman I have ever met. Several years ago I used to buy New Balance sneakers from Big 5 all the time. However, one time a salesman had a bad attitude. As a result, I then started buying my sneakers from Costco where there is no bad attitude. Even though Costco has inexpensive sneakers, thay are not as good as New Balance. I hope that Big 5 keeps hiring top notch salesmen like Chris V. read more

Stoped in for one of their weekly sales. Was looking for a specific item and saw they had it on sale. I grabbed two and got in line to pay. The sales clerk rang them up at a higher price. I showed him the add and he said it was a mis print. I said I grabbed them from that shelf and it has the same price as the add. He said he could not sell them to me at that price I asked for a manager. He took a look at the add and the shelf where I got them from and said no problem. Just stopped in looking to replace my Brooks (shoes). Had to have a manager page the shoe guy I ask the shoe guy bring out a pair of new balance and a pair of adidas he brings out the New Balance and says he does not have them in black. I try both on. The NB fit ok but I don't like the color and the adidas are to tight I'm looking around for the shoe guy so I can get a larger pair of the adidas. Can't find him. This is a really small, limited sports equipment selling location. They prices aren't that reasonable (compared to Walmart a few blocks over), and their selection isn't great either. The service is vaguely lackluster, and the stock always appears unorganized. If you're looking for something basic, you might gamble and find it here, but I've never been so lucky. I hadn't been to Big 5 Sporting Goods in years and nearly forgot it was there! Surprised it's still up and running, but maybe it helps to have a major gym right next to it(?) Small store with A LOT in it. My recent visit was prompted by my need for new, sturdy knee braces for my first half-marathon (Encinitas half on March 4th -and I killed it!) In my quest for this particular item, I found myself happily lost in their workout clothing section ; maybe they were having a killer sale that day because those prices for workout pants, tanks, and sports bras were lit fam! I mean, quality, brand name stuff for $16.99! As for the brace/compression sleeve area, they had a nice selection on a four way fixture, albeit limited compared to what I've seen at a Dick's or Sports Authority (which is out of business....) Feels old and dated as a structure and the staff are hot and cold, but I was pleased with my find(s) and want to go back to look at more clothes! read more

I totally forgot about the Big 5 deals that comes in the newspaper. I was in a dire need of some new sneakers so my husband suggested looking into Big 5 rather than Dick's or Famous Footwear. As technology has made it possible to make everything digital, I was able to take a look at their deals online and choose one that I was willing to spend on. If you've never been here before, don't let the name fool you. Although it's a Big 5, this place is small compared to the Sports Authority that closed. They don't have much of a women's shoes selection but it suffices if you are a Nike, Saucony fan. I spent less than 20 minutes and I was able to make a decision on A Nike pair, all black for $60. I didn't get to look around as much as I had my daughter with me. But will definitely be coming back again for all my sports needs. read more

What is there to say about Big 5? It has sporting goods... that's about it! There were tents outside due to a "big sale," but honestly, I wasn't impressed with the merchandise they had inside or outside of the store. Lots of outdated stuff at the latest MSRP. I felt like much of what was featured could have been bought off Craigslist for cheaper, or that newer, better versions of items could have purchased elsewhere for the same price or less. I'd recommend this place if you want/need stuff to beat up on, but don't care whether or not you look good in it. I don't mean to bag on Big 5, but it's just not as visually appealing as Sports Chalet or Sports Authority; they also don't offer stuff that I think would be key to the area (surfboards). I'd give them a 2 based on the store alone, but their customer service was decent. I didn't get any flack from the sales reps wandering around, and any questions I popped on them were answered nicely. Unfortunately, they just have cruddy merchandise, which really isn't the fault of the sales people or management -- they're just selling the goods given to them. Still, I can't recommend a place that I wouldn't want to shop at. I guess I would visit here as a last resort if none of my other usual spots didn't have it, or if I couldn't find it off CL. Whatever item I'd get from them in the future would have to be a real steal or exclusive to Big 5. read more

Small but MIGHTY store for your last minute sport goodies! Since the lockdown, my girlfriend and I wanted to buy a pair of rollerblades and get active. At first I called Dick's Sporting Goods but they were completely sold out of women rollerblades! I called this Big 5 and the person on the line was friendly and helpful. Said they had many choices to pick from so we drove over and wow, this store is like a hidden gem! There were SO many cool and affordable blades and other goodies that we picked up. Our pairs were $60 and way cheaper than Dick's prices! We ended up buying many other items in addition to our cool Converse-looking blades and if you sign up for their email list, it's an additional 10% off. I think this is pretty good. We have made many purchases here, snowboard clothes mostly. Better prices than Dick's Sporting Goods. We bought two "Giant Chairs" here, for camping, they seat at least 3 people LOL I just got a pair of running shoes off the clearance table for $20. Not my best pair, they're made by Rawlings, who specialize in baseball mitts? But they're good enough for beach running for $20! Also got 2 pairs of Dr Scholl's sandals for $17/each, cute pattern on them and comfy! Good selection of snowboard pants IMO. Seems like a lot of kids ski clothes too. read more

I was told one of the suits did not match the number on the receipt so I could only get store credit?? They were all bought at the same time, on the same card and if it wasn't on the receipt, that is the cashiers issue, not mine... I recently went into Big 5 Sporting Goods. I like to come in here to purchase hiking/backpacking gear from time to time as I attend the gym next door and it's convenient and of course sales. I must say as I walked into that store I never felt so welcomed. Zach helped me find an amazing pair of hiking shoes with a great smile, customer service 100% and very promptly. But the great service didn't end their as my checkout Matt did an awesome job as the last line of defense in uplifting my departure of the store. I'm giving this place a one-star rating for one reason and one reason only... incompetent employees. On my day off today before the Super Bowl, I wanted to go buy a pair of Nike Free Runs ("Frees") 5.0 in a specific color - I liked a few. I decided to call around to see which store had what selection. When I called Big 5, I got transferred to the shoe department. Some guy answered and when I asked him what color options he had for Nike Free Runs 5.0 for women, he kept asking me what I was saying. He thought that I was saying Nike Three and asked me to spell Nike Frees. I was in total shock when he told me that he'd have to put me on hold to check, but that he had never heard of the shoe before. Really bro?! You work at a sporting goods store in the shoe department and you haven't heard of only one of the most popular running shoes out there right now for men and women. He told me that they may be getting something similar soon. How do you know that?! You don't even know what shoe I'm talking about. And why would I care if you're getting similar shoes?! I obviously want something specific. I will not step foot in that store, especially now that I know that I am more knowledgable than the employees who work there (and when it comes to sports and sporting goods, you should be ashamed if I know more than you). I called Dicks and Sports Authority and the employees at both were able to tell me the colors they had available in my size and for how much without even putting me on hold. Mr. Big 5 employee (should have written down the name), my advice to you is to Google, call other stores, do whatever it takes to LEARN something about the products at your store. This place carries plenty of cheap sorting equipment, which is great! However, the service side is not so great. Hopefully, you know exactly what your looking for and you know how to compare certain items...because I didn't seem to find anyone that really knew what they were talking about. Especially in the shoe department. When I asked for a size 11, he came back and said all he had was a size 9, then asked if that work be OK. Ummmm....
