I like this location, but not the parking lot. It's next to an auto parts store so it's always crammed with people working on their car or just flat out poorly parked taking up multiple spots. With that said, once inside, they do a great job of stocking as much as possible given that this is a slightly smaller Big 5 location than others. I always make a point of coming to this location first because chances are checkout lines will be shorter and then if they don't have what I'm looking for I go up the street to the Granada Hills location. Staff here is also very friendly. They tend to only be at the register and aren't wandering around the store a ton, but I've also never really needed help finding things as the store is very well laid out and intuitive. Prices are fine. Nothing amazing, but they're better priced than other big box sporting good store chains so, once again, this is always our first stop for gear for our 3 growing kids & their youth sports gear. If you give them your email you'll get a weekly email with some good deals that often are catered to whatever sport season is about to start as well which I greatly appreciate. If not, chances are you'll get a coupon in the mail for 20% off or $5 off a purchase of $20 or more. So always keep an eye out for one of those if you know you are going to need to buy anything. read more

Since I came early, I figure I would walk around Big 5 until they arrived. I found parking easily because I came in the morning and this store is in a big plaza. This Big 5 store is spacious inside and has many different products to choose from. This store is really convenient to our family, we have shopped here before and prior to them moving from previous location. We've been helped by a younger Hispanic young lady who is very helpful and friendly. Today we were helped by a young lady named Melanie and let me just say she has the worst customer service and attitude I've ever experienced at a big 5 store. Melanie obviously hates her job. Maybe she should not be allowed to interact with customers, maybe she should do something else such as stocking. I literally just spent almost $700 and received the worse customer service from her. The old man at the bb gun stand has a complex just like most gun owners with no education, hence working at Big 5 at 60. I ask a very basic question about a gun. I ask which is your best overall rifle you have in stock. Without looking at me, once, looking at the floor with his arms behind his back, answers me, "well, sir, I don't know what you're looking for, so i couldnt answer that for you.". I asked if the bb/pellet combos take away from the power or range compared to a specialty gun for only bbs, for example."Well,.sir, I'm not sure what it is you're trying to ask me." I asked the same question 3 different ways. I noticed he wasn't in the best mood, granted, I was there at 8. They closed at 830. I get it, so I told him I'd be back after doing a bit more research. And I was as respectful as you can be to a drill seargent or your team leader..he replied, yea, cause you sound confused. I told him I knew what I wanted. I want one of each. Pellet handgun and a bb handgun, as well as a pellet tactical rifle with an individual rifle which shoots only bbs. Its not rocket science. I already bought the hanguns. Oh, and i asked him if the glock 17 was supposed to be so loud, or if i was maybe loading the cartridge incorrectly. He made it seem like I was stupid for asking such a dumb question. He even looked down and laughed when i asked my buddy what a break barrel was as far as how many rounds it can shoot with one break., but he didnt have the cahones to look at me directly in my eyes. Ends up, I was just puncturing the cartridge incorrectly. He said, "sir it's not supposed to be loud at all. "Well, what if I was....", shakes his head before I'm done asking. He says, "It shouldnt do that". Doesn't explain why or what i may be doing incorrectly. ""Well, can it be im...," Again, shakes his head, so i just stopped trying to confide in him. I wasnt lining the thread up correctly with the bottom of the handle so I'd get a surge of air at the first couple shots and the rest would leak, hence the loud pop it made like it was a real 22 the first shot. This was my favorite part, though. He told me, "well, sir, the combos slow the shot down significantly, so i don't understand why it would be as loud as you claim. (paraphrasing) ." So, why couldn't you say that when I asked if the combos interfere with the potential of the power for either or, in the beginning of our conversation? And then he got the rifle I asked to see and got the facts wrong after my buddy asked him questions he already knew the answers to just to show me how little he really knew. It loads 12, not 10. "NO IT LOADS.....OH YEAH...I GUESS ITS 12, NOW!" The more I learn, the less I know, ive learned in life. Thinking you have knowledge on something you don't is the very nature of being dumb. Its being oblivious to something you think you know, but don't. Right? Which is why I've learned more about life, staying humble, and asking questions. Its gotten me off of heroin for 7 years and into medical school. Thats how you know whether someone has dealt with adversity in their lives. Someone whos been through the ringer would treat others with respect. Not like theyre less than. Never needed a gun growiing up. I guess some pf you rely on then instead of good old fashion training. Not a review about the store but about "Jose". He might be the rudest individual I ever encountered. He should be fired immediately for harassing me the customer for 0 reason. I went in to acquire about a test for a firearm, I let him know that I called another location and they said I can walk in and take the test with no appointment so I went. As I arrived Jose was already being rude with another customer inquiring about the same thing. He proceeds to tell me I can't take the test and need an appointment. I asked do you guys have different rules for different stores? He asked me what store I called, and then said yea they're different. Me being frustrated not at Jose but the wrong information I received I walked away and shook my head as I was leaving. As I was leaving jose then asks me why am I shaking my head and proceed to HARASS me and PROVOKE ME. He then keeps asking me why did I shake my head and I told him he had 0 right to ask me and he didn't need to know. I did not shake my head at him or on his face but has I was walking. He then starts a scene then tries to tell me it was my fault. He then proceeds to say he's "tough" everyday because he was in the marines. Good luck getting help here. There aren't many associates on the floor, and they won't seem to offer help unless asked. The store is organized a bit like how my room looked when I was a kid: stuff sectioned off in their own unrelated areas, some things crammed too closely together, and the look of having been organized at one point but now slightly messy as items have gotten taken off shelves and put back. After a good several minutes, I finally found what I came for: hiking poles. The ones with cork handles were pricey, and I don't trust cork to be durable (at least not the ones from Big 5), so I passed on those. There were some poles discounted to $15 that looked promising and were height-adjustable, but none of them seemed to work properly! One wouldn't lock, one could lock/unlock but not open, and two could neither unlock nor open. I'm PRETTY sure I was correctly following the instructions printed on the poles, as they weren't complicated. How hard should it be to find stuff in a store that actually, you know, works? I didn't need anything else, and having seen such a shoddy product, frankly I wasn't interested in seeing anything else. read more

There were two clerks working checkout. I was waiting in line, holding my toddler in one arm and a 4 foot hardshell kiddie pool in the other. One clerk, I believe the manager, turns around, looks me in the eye, and places the "closed" sign in front of his register. His colleague at the other register asks him to help her customer find some particular item. He starts walking away and then turns around and says to the customer "you gonna follow me or what?" The customer, an elderly woman with a bandaged hand and an eye patch, asked him to just get the item for her. No can do. So the poor woman had to go shuffling off after him. Not very big for a sporting goods store, which of course means less selection. I only needed a bag for equipment, and they certainly had enough to choose from (and decent sales; my bag was originally $50, but I paid $25). Their safety gear selection for skating lacked; I only saw helmets in kids' sizes, and the same with pads (unless there were adult ones elsewhere?). The pads looked cheap and came in packs with knee/elbow/wrist, so you were stuck with all of 'em even if you only wanted one, or your knees are a M and your wrists are S. Really, it's a Big 5, not a specialty store; it's not REI or a skate shop or whatever. You can't expect it to have top-of-the-line anything. You go there for basic sporting needs. I wanted a Ruger 10/22. Went to turners and they had a 3 hour line. I couldn't even ask if it was in stock or not. The reps told me to wait in line for ANY gun related question. F that. So off to Big 5 I go. What I got is excellent customer service from Harold in the sporting arms section. He needed to check with corporate with a question I had, so he got our number since I was there on a saturday. We got a call from him but we missed so he left a voicemail(nowadays no one really calls back!) anyway we called back the next day and got our question answered. This store is kinda depressing from the lighting to the selection to the clusterF of merchandise crammed on the floor. I guess it's hard to keep up with superstores like Target these days. It was May 6 Friday night when I went into big five store number 131 to buy a couple under Armour shirts. There was a section that was clearly stating that the under Armour shirts below were on sale for 19.99 But upon me trying to buy that shirt a specific sales employee named Brenda told me that only a select few shirts on that rack were on sale and immediately started moving shirts around to make it look like it hadn't been label incorrectly. The other employees were even telling her that it was okay but she started yelling "it's not okay if I have to over ride a price". It was at that moment that I recognized the signs of someone under the influence of alcohol. Her eyes were glazed and her words slurred together and she continued to yell at me even while I walked out of the store empty handed. I think this employee, Brenda, needs to learn proper customer etiquette and possibly even some Alcoholics Anonymous help. I will never go back to that store again. read more

This review is for 04/22/2011. Well, Happy Good Friday. I didn't realize most companies I do business with are closed. With work being at half operations, I was excused to leave early and do some shopping with some hard earned cash. Plus, I have been walking/running around my work trying to lose some more weight. Time to get some new shoes at Big 5 Sporting Goods. I was at Baja Fresh last week across the street and mistakenly thought it was located on the same lot with Big 5 and Ross Stores. I made a mistake again by walking into Ross on the left side instead of going to the Big 5. Ryan has not been thinking straight lately. The parking can get pretty packed, so I recommend parking towards Nordhoff. Unlike most Big 5 Stores, this one was not quite big. The shape of the store is more longer and narrow than wide and rectangular. However, the location of the shoes is always at the back of the store. I haven't bought regular running shoes in awhile since I love my Service Boots. I've worn my 3-4 boots since 2002. I, also, keep reserve NEW Shoes just in case....lol...Yes, I love my boots. I wasn't sure what kind of shoes to get. New Balance, Adidas, or some crap shoes. Like I mentioned earlier, time to spend some hard earned $$$$. I saw these nice Nike Air Alvord 8 Shoes ($49.99). I have no idea what that means. There were two shoe employees helping out; one guy and one lady. The lady knew I was about to ask before I got the display shoe. Size 13 Please. Yes...Size 13....lol As I was about to try the shoes on, I felt a shiver in my back and I turned around and that one guy was staring at me...O...K...A...Y... Let me try these shoes on. These shoes fit perfectly. Off to checkout line. When I got to the checkout line, the lady at the register was about to literally kill the cash register. It was so SLOW. She warned me wait before I slide my credit card. She scanned my box and it took forever to register. Finally, my total came up. My total is $54.86. Big 5 is where I buy my shoes. I always trust they have something for me. I am not going to spend hundreds for Air Jordan or whatever cost $300.. I just need to walk from Point A to B. I am not David Beckham with million dollar insurance on my legs/feet. Store experience was average except that feeling of that guy watching me put my shoes on....lol. The Yelp Universe.
