I came here months ago to pick up a Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle before all this nonsense panic gun buying started. The reason I chose Big5 over a regular gun shop is because you don't, at least back then, need an appointment for your firearms test. You do have to make sure that you take it while a manager is there, so your best bet is calling ahead. The whole testing and purchasing process was very quick and easy. I even got a discount that just about matched the lowest prices I saw on line (I don't think they price match). Also, they are not an FFL for internet gun sales, so if you buy a gun online, you can't have it shipped here. I've been back since for a 16 gun gun safe, a hard sided rifle case, and most recently, a small 4 person tent for my yard since I work in healthcare and if I get exposed to a COVID-19 patient, I will need to isolate myself from my family. It's not as big as the one in Brea, but I keep coming back here because they have what I want in stock and the parking is easy and the staff friendly. read more

So i buy some walkie talkies that turned out to be defective (Battery would last more than 2 minutes without needed a recharge) i take them back two days laters and the lady told me that without a receipt she could "only give the store credit for the amount of the item if were to be on sale" No one ever gave me a receipt at the time of purchase and thats the excuse they use to deny they had sold me something defective. They offered me 19 dollars SC when i payed 42 for the item. At the end of the day they kept my money and the walkie talkies. Complaint to cashier staff at La Puente location. Shout out/ Praises to Melanie at Corporate Cust Service and Austin La Puente Store Manager. Selly/ Zelly at La Puente store was unprofessional and condescending. I purchased three water shoes and 3 snorkeling gear on April 3rd. I asked the return policy at that time and the cashier replied to just keep my receipt. On April 4th-7th where I went to spend couple nights at Laguna, one of the water shoes broke apart (the soles came off on the April 5th), and the glue was visible. Im a nurse i work nights so Im tired almost all the time with solely taking care of 3 kids. That was the reason i couldnt go back on the 8th to request refund/ exchanges. Today is my officially day off n before i took my kids to their baseball, i ran here for return. At first the cashier was Miranda, she said it needs to have the tag so they can scan it. I replied how do i have the tag when i already use the item and the item's quality was compromised. I bought three of the water shoes and only one that the soles came off. Then Miranda asked another staff, she told me her name was Selly or Zelly or Sellee (I dont know how her name spelling is), and she said it needs to be in new condition with a very condescending tone. I explained to her how do I suppose to know this particular shoes will have defect during wear. Its puzzling, store as big as Big 5 wont stay behind their products quality. What was more disappointing was this suppose to be family friendly sporting store but definitely dont feel that vibe here. I stood my ground saying that this is clearly a defective item and she said the sole suppose to come off for cleaning. It seemed like im being made fun n fooled, i replied that doesnt make sense when the glue marks is torn and visible. And she looked at the receipt she said it was more than 7 days so she wouldn't be able to take it back. She responded theres policy she needs to follow and shes doing her job. And she said to call the corporate if I had problem. So I did. I spoke to Melanie that genuinely emphatized and just a God sent. She then called the store and got back to me to talk to the Manager, Austin, for refund/ exchange/ store credit. I went back in, and with a sour face, they issued me a refund. I thought long gone time where customer being treated poorly, almost like scamming selling defective products and denying complaint/ refusing ownership of their products. This is the first time I had issues as this. Especially over $14.99 item. Where ever I shopped (my go to Target, REI, Amazon), always putting customer satisfaction and customer service up high. By the way I never had this issue with other Big 5 store around my area (Rowland Height and West Covina). On 2018 I had the same issue in this specific location for for baseball items. If that is Big 5 policy, why keep changing information to me? (Just have the receipt available. Oh no apparently have to have tag. Have to be in new condition? Have to be less than 7 days), policy seems so inconsistent and varies among staff. And Melanie from corporate said the staff in the store said they couldn't inspect it because it was dirty. That was a big dishonesty. Not once Selly/Zelly whoever her name is, and/ Miranda showed any emphaty in trying to understand what I meant, more over offering to "inspect" and made me feel like a thief instead. That water shoes was sandy, but I rinsed it and it still have visible sands here and there but definitely not dirty. I hope this matter will be addressed accordingly as I'm not satisfied spending my hard earned money during pandemic for crappy quality item and store that wont stand behind their product with unprofessional customer service. read more

With all those large chain sporting goods stores going belly up, it kind of nice to have a big 5 store in the neighborhood. This store is just packed full of your sporting goods & outdoor needs, and will generally have what you come in for. Staff is OK, you usually get a welcoming greeting......most of the time. Staffers on the floor are limited, unless your in the shoe dept., they are pretty good there. Other than that, if you need help, you might have to look for someone for assistance. So with the minor problem with lack of employees, still good to have them around, and I hope around for a long time. Definitely a fan, so 4 stars from me. read more

Before the Chicks and Dicks and even REI sporting goods stores.There stood this establishment,a shop where one can still buy decent merchandise.A store that still carries brands that were once in style but now not trending. Columbia and Russell once stood as a top of the line seller but now have been thrown down the barrel just like rejected muppets.Coleman is also a well known camping brand that still holds its own. And so what if it doesn't have the look. Are we not shopping for quality merchandise at a great price that still does the same job without the bells and whistles. Believe me,I'm a little tired of shelling out Benjamin's for gear I can get at a low price that works for me. Plus the store has a lot of interesting knick knacks that will keep you shopping for stuff you don't even need.The place has all your outdoor needs and the friendly staff are there to help out if needed. I made a purchased recently, and after some local technicalities with this retailer I had to return the purchase. That is not the issue I ran into. But the reason why I am writing this review is that other than it being a technicality on why I had to return the purchase, the return was made more personal than it being the technicality. Almost stereotyping in a way in which I was forced to return the purchase. Also partially insinuating that wrong would be done on my part. Safe to say its a good store for what its there for, just don't let anyone force or make it is if it is their judgement, but make it the policy of the store firsthand. To whom it may concern: I just wanted to let the community know that I was discriminated upon by Victor who is the store manager while working the evening shift on November 25 at approximately 8:20pm Manager Victor came up to me and my daughter while my daughter was trying on some ankle support braces and he informed us that the store had to close at 8:30pm sharp. I responded with no worries were definitely finishing up and we will be heading out to the cash register in a few minutes later Victor came back and told me I had to leave now! I responded with what's the issue and Victor responded with and insinuated that this was an issue of loss prevention and that I looked suspicious with my 12 year old daughter because of a loss prevention, when I asked him loss prevention he said yes loss prevention issue. I informed him that no this is a customer service issue since he insinuated because I was a male bald Hispanic that I was a high-risk. I have never been disrespected or embarrassed in my life especially in front of my 12-year-old daughter and discriminated upon based on her fathers appearance. I even asked Victor if he has ever received an orientation on customer service or training on how important his role plays even around his employees. Victor replied with I don't have to tell you that I don't have to tell you anything I need you to leave! I inform Victor that I have been coming to this big 5 store for over 16 years and I live in the community just blocks away and I told him that Im going to follow up with corporate regarding the customer service I received today. Not only did I feel belittled disrespected and embarrassed regarding the way Victor approached me and my daughter I would like to let the staff know that this is not excepted or tolerated by any big 5 customers. Customer service training and empathy has to be definitely be given to this current manager Victor at this particular store location. I must say everybody else was professional with me and my daughter however Victor as a manager should understand and know that he needs to lead by example and this is not the example that big 5 definitely wants to show how to treat there customers. We were able to purchase the ankle braces, however we weren't able to buy the under armor longsleeve shirts and we weren't able to buy the sliding shorts for my daughter because of accusations loss and prevention, which are more in line on closing the store at 8:30pm sharp like he earlier mentioned. This is just my first step to let the community know of the customer service that I received however I will be following up with corporate regarding this matter. The big 5 store location that I'm referring to is on the intersection of Francisquito and Hacienda in the shopping center. This store is nice and quite. A lot of parking . But the service sucks. I was acknowledged when i walked in. Waiting at the rifle section for 10 min waiting for the employee to finish with a customer but didn't bother asking me if i needed help as if i was just standing there for no f* reason and walks away with the customer. We went here looking for very specific insoles for shoes and shoes that had a certain kind of arch support. After talking to Chris, I believe his name was, we learned that they didn't carry the brand of insoles we were looking for. He took the time to go through all the different types of shoes they had that had arch support and got all the sizes we needed and was very attentive to us. Even though we didn't end up purchasing anything from the store this time, he gave us his time and his honest opinion which is rare nowadays. I have come to this store many times, as it is the closest to me, and have never left disappointed. We came here for their black Friday sale last year and left with many awesome deals. Heres my story, I came in to buy a pellet rifle called a gamo whisper fusion pro. the box and receipt came with exactly the description. Heres the fraudulent part...the gun was NOT the gamo whisper fusion pro. Instead it was a bull whisper (totally different). I came back for an exchange. They said we never sold this bull whisper model before. I said, I bought this gun here and I have the proof for it. They said sorry you don't have the exact gun you bought it for. Wow. in other words I am screwed for buying something I cant exchange. Heres a fun fact. They looked up the bull whisper and it is not in their system, inventory, manufacturer purchase order...nothing at all. They sold me the wrong gun when I clearly payed for the correct one. Husband and I purchased fleece gloves from the Covina location, but he ended up not needing it. I tried to return it at this location, but the manager said that I had to return it at the original location I had purchased them at because they don't carry the item. What?! Big 5 is a large franchise! I wasn't in the mood to argue, so I went back to the Covina location. The cashier also thought it was strange that the La Puente location wouldn't take it back and refund me. She was nice enough to even apologize on behalf of the other store! Went in looking for an item I knew they carried after walking around and around with no one asking to help me I finally asked at the cashiers the item was locked behind the cashiers station. It is not a big store two employees kinda walk around all these two did was talk about health insurance and dental coverage and while I am sure getting her teeth fixed was important to her the customers didn't need to know about her cracked tooth.
