I rarely write reviews on big box stores, because it's like writing a review on McDonald's. It's going to be the same wherever you go. However, when you're slighted, sometimes you just need to Yelp. Went to go buy a fishing license for the family. Asked a group of employees that were talking at the register if someone could assist me. The customer service person seemed annoyed at my questions about the purchasing process and started to raise her voice, so much so she caught herself and lowered it. My main questions were, if they're a minor how would they be able show ID? Does everyone need to be present? And can you purchase it online if you're not able to assist me? I don't think she entirely knew, maybe that's why she was annoyed. The kicker is she said I couldn't purchase online for the next day, the state would need to mail it to me. Welp, here I sit with one printed after purchasing it online. I realize this isn't a Big 5 thing, you can have a clerk that is having a bad day, or maybe a poor disposition. I will say this though, the only perks of going to a brick and mortar store is that you can go in, talk to a real person and ask questions. When you fail at that, well then I can see why Amazon is killing the competition. An app won't get annoyed and raise their voices at the customers. read more

Came in here to buy a pair of shoes for my daughter. The customer service was decent for me and my husband, but not so much for the person in front of us. The customer in front of us was smiling and asking questions and even thanked the clerk for walking her through the payment process. The clerk seemed inpatient and was not polite at all. Being kind and having patience is so important specially, when you're helping an elderly person. By reading the comments below this seems to be an issue. Upper management invest in your employees. I get Big 5's emailed coupons every day. Most of the time they have something useful at great prices. A few weeks ago I purchased a $49 backpack for $17. I try to make emergency packs for my kids cars. Things like first aid kits, flares, matches [yeah I was a Boy Scout], granola bars, a water bottle and a blanket. With these earthquakes, it seems more important than ever. Today I came in for a pair of sneakers for $18. Yup, $18. And I use wide shoes. I would not purchase anything from Big 5 again. I bought a beach tent and it was flying everywhere at the beach. I decided to purchase one my friend had that was sturdier and planned to return the one I bought from Big 5. HOWEVER, they stated I couldn't return it because it was not "original" condition. There was sand and a loose string that they stayed was "ripped." That "ripped" string was used to tie around the tent, we just didn't do it. They should be more knowledgeable about their products! Bad customer service. Went here to purchase badminton rackets and the cashier accidentally gave us the wrong price for one of our items. We immediately cleared up the mistake right there but the cashier was really rude about it. They have a bit of everything from every "sport" category you can think of. Fishing, shooting, tennis, golf, swimming, yoga, baseball, workout, soccer, footballs, running etc.. They could have a sign for each section since they got so many categories. Each section is jam packed with its items and well organized. Once you see it, you can tell which category you look at. However, it's easier to find the section you need if they had a sign. The staff were nice. - Gluttony Expedition - Some sections I checked: Guns: Not real ones to the real ones. This country got a full of loco/loca, yet you can easily get the real gun here at the "sports" shop.... No pistolas para Americano pinche loco?! (Mi no habra espanol). God bless America... Swimming: From a nose clip to swim wears like speedos. You can find some items you wouldn't find at regular stores. You can find some of the items cheaper at 99 cent store, discount stores like Marshall's or Target. Camping: From tents to the gears. Workout: From gloves to water bottles. I needed the gloves for my workout. You need to watch out the size for it. They usually have small to large. They tend to have the better pricing than others (at least on the gloves), though you could find a deal at discount stores sometimes. Shoes: Though each section seems to have the specialty shoes (baseball, golf, football etc.), they have lots of shoes and sandals. Check out the sale section! - Conqueror's Deduction - I workout a lot at gym. I used to workout with a trainer. I really don't have any preference on stuff except for the shoes. Good shoes make a big difference on the performance and your body. I like the light one, so I tend to prefer Nike to NB etc. Gloves? Clothing? I don't care. I wear whatever - even "SKINS" (high end sports wear that Olympic athletes wear) for the muscle soreness, not for the style ;p I do free weight a lot, so I need to have gloves not to make my hands ugly and hard. That's why I come to Big 5. I think it's better than "Sports chalet" and "Sports authority", though Big 5 isn't really for "style" much compared to others (more focus on the functionality) for sure... I admit that I don't look pretty in any means at gym (except for my ass, abs and arms ;p). I don't make up unlike most chicks, I mourn and have a flown to kick my butt while working out. I workout seriously and am focused on muscles I work on so that I can be healthy both physically and mentally, and mostly, eat whatever I want and be a non-fat foodie. They have pretty good deals at Big 5. So let me take you on my routine when I come into Big 5.. So my first stop when I go to Big 5 is the shoe section. They have really good deals on shoes. They do have some weird shoe brands. But try them on! You might like them. I usually come here to pick up some Wilson Tennis shoes for about $30. I have gotten a pair of LA Gear shoes for $20 (only for indoor use). I was looking to get a pair of Denali running/hiking shoes for $20 (but wasn't too sure yet). Then my next stop is the tennis the section. When I wanted to pick up another tennis racket, I came here to check out their many choices. Check out the deals! Then I slowly make my way to the middle of the store where the clothing sections are. I have gotten shirts, shorts, hats, socks, warm ups, and beanies, from Big 5. Then I see the basketball section and I know I gotta check it out. I got my full size all surface leather basketball here for $20 (it still hasn't seen the outdoors yet.. I refuse to play it on concrete :P) Then before I leave I check out the gun section. That is my usual routine when I go into a Big 5. Staff has always been helpful. Never had a problem with them. Parking can suck here. Just because some wise guy decided to put the parking spots so close together. Will I be back? Probably! If their is another good deal that I can't pass up! This store has everything we need for camping or sporting goods. The price is reasonable. It is much lower than Dick's stores, and very cheap when they have promotions on sale. I like to buy athletic socks for my husband. Usually it costs $16/ 6-pack, but it's only $10 for a 6-pack or a 10-pack on sale. However, customer service isn't that good. Though they try not to make it obvious, they have a cold, uncaring attitude. The store is clean and has plenty of parking space outside. Overall, I still like to shop here. read more

They keep a modest stock on hand, so if you are looking for a specialty item you might want to try a different store. Things are constantly going on sale at Big 5, so you might want to check out the weekly ads before going to the store. That is such a bummer to find a running shoe that works for you not crazy expensive and to find out that they aren't going to manufacture it anymore, can't even find it online... anyways back to Big 5. I don't know if this location is going out of business or there are just having good deals on shoes! The painted advertisement of SALE and DISCOUNTED kinda make it look like those furniture stores advertisements. :p So I tried on a few other shoes while I was there and the sales people are fantastic! I am a fan of sporting stuff...NOW. Small selection, but the prices are pretty decent. For example, I needed a yoga mat, desperately, for my first yoga class at the GYM. I looked at Old Navy and other stores, their yoga mats were easily marked $20. So the BF reminded me to go to BIG 5 across the street, so I went and I found my current yoga mat, ON SALE, for $15 bucks! What a deal! I would love to come back for more stuff. However, I go to DICKS Sporting Goods for softball equipment and another spot for softball gear. read more

This review is strictly based on service, because it's been a long time since I've seen service like this Came in looking for a punching bag for my son, we saw a couple of very young men standing in the front. One of them, Adrian, greeted me and asked me what I'm looking for, I told him I'm looking for a punching bag and he took us to the back showed us our various options, and stood there waiting for us and was patient with us until we made our choice. He then went into the back, found our selection, put it on a dolly took us to the front to pay. Once we made payment he took the punching bag all the way to the car and loaded it up for us. Well it was that time of year again to play in the Annual Charity Softball tourney (where I later pulled my hamstring but I'm not gonna bore you with that) So I had to purchase Some new Cleats batting gloves and Basketball shorts. Upon entering the store I was greeted kindly by the front cashiers. While browsing the batting gloves I was asked if could be helped. I cannot remember the man who helped me with the cleats but he was very helpful always referred to me as Sir and was patient in finding my right size. The only thing is they seemed to be out of sizes 10-12. So maybe they don't restock as often or I just caught them at a bad time. I ended up going with football cleats because cleats are cleats. Seemed like everything was orderly in the store and had plenty of employees walking around the store. Overall great experience and low prices! read more
