I was parked in the very last spot in the parking lot next to the mcdonalds, i had parked there because the mcdonalds lot was full, and honestly i thought it was part of the lot. I was sitting and eating my food with a power tripping security guard comes and tells me to move. I apologized and said i thought it was part of mcdonald's lot, and he didn't even acknowledge, and just repeated for me to "park in mcdonald's lot" i didn't even know what store i was apparently loitering at, when i'm sitting clear around the back side of the store. plenty of spaces around. the guy could have been polite or even acknowledged that I didn't argue with him, but he was rude. I was looking for a specific magazine loader for my new Sig and was wondering what sporting goods store might carry it? I hopped onto YELP as per my usual and found BIG 5! This was going to be a short trip and a sweet one apparently. When I got to the store, parking was super easy, it was near a busy area but no issue getting there. Walked in and spoke to the crew member at the cash register. Explained what I needed and he directed me towards the right spot. I could see where it was but I needed a manager to sell it to me since it was for a firearm. Once the manager shows up we got to talking and of course, he's an avid gun enthusiast. He suggested some ammo to try on my new Sig P365 XMacro and I also bought some of that ammo. Of course... They have a HUGE selection of different caliber ammo and great prices as well. The manager gave me some pointers on a couple of handgun related questions and was super knowledgeable and just a nice dude. Just the "quick" tip... I feel like Big 5 also won the sporting goods war. Let's see, there was Sportmart, Sports Authority, Copeland's, Sport Chalet and others that are either bankrupted or bought by other companies. I used to coach Little League Baseball back in the early 2000's and purchased a lot of sports gears here. I would check the Sunday paper and would immediately grab the Big 5 ads to see what was on sale. You can purchase good quality hiking boots at bargain prices that would last you a couple of years. They have guns, ammos, fishing gears, water sports gear, bow & arrows, darts, baseball, softball, football, soccer, hockey, basketball, hiking, climbing, boxing, MMA, volleyball, lacrosse, rugby, diving, tennis, badminton, utility knives, axes, watches, bowling, survival gears and any type of outdoor activities that I failed to mention. Sounds like this is a perfect place to be during a zombie apocalypse or a pandemic. I bought a stationary bike at Big 5 awhile ago, and when it was time for a new one, of course I came back. I went in today, they have a display board with about 10 different models. The gentleman that assisted me said he didn't believe they had any on hand. He checked a few models, nothing. Then he checked the computer, and said there were no bikes available in a 100 mile radius and he thinks Big 5 will not be carrying them anymore. I thanked him for his time went home and decided to just order from Amazon. While I was online, I'm not sure why, I checked Big 5. For some reason, the Gellert location indicated low stock, and to call. I was just there, I'm not calling them. The San Bruno location also showed low stock and to call, which I did. They had one stationary bike left!! I couldn't believe it! Makes me wonder if the Gellert location truly checked within 100 mile radius for any available stationary bikes! Interesting. I literally just left there from shopping for some items for my summer baseball league. While at the register, I noticed a sign at the register for a small military appreciation discount. I show my military ID card to the cashier, he replies, "thank you sir, give me one second, and I'll do that for you", and continues to ring up my items. As he totals everything up, he asks me to insert my credit card; accordingly I do, and low and behold he never applied the discount. Not a big deal, it's only 10%, and I don't usually fish for discounts, especially military, however; if you choose to literally have it displayed at the register and your cashier acknowledges you when you present your ID, at least remember to apply it. Again, not a knock on this kid, or the store, or even the chain. I love shopping at Big 5 no matter what city I happen to be in, but maybe one day someone will insist on their discount and make a scene. Just a friendly reminder. Acknowledge and act. read more

First want to say that I have always had great experiences at this location until tonight. I never like to leave a bad review. Came in at 710 PM as Yelp said they are open until 830. The Lady at the front door said we closed at 7. I asked if I could use the one day coupon tomorrow and she said I don't know/ maybe as she closed the door on us. Then called and spoke a gentleman and asked him if we we would be able to use the coupon tomorrow. The gentleman was pleasant and spoke to the manager (who I assume was lady) who said we would have to ask the on duty manager tomorrow. If the store hours have been changed, a simple message to Yelp from Big 5 could update the hours. Please note this Big 5 closes at 7pm not 830pm. This store is on the smaller side for the chain. It still has the basic essentials that you'll need. There is ample parking and it's surrounded by many businesses. The prices are decent and sales are available from time to time. During my last visit, I walked in towards the gun counter. No one was there to help. I walked around the store looking for an employee and both ladies were behind a clothing rack, texting on their phones. Asking for help must have put a real dent in those conversations. The demeanor was fake and rude. The cashier didn't say a word to me. Maybe some professionalism in the workplace training is in order. I'll elect to go to another Big 5 in the future. read more

Big 5 lost my families business. Forever. Swearing loudly, the 3 of the male works including the so-called manager, in the aisle ways gossiping about women's genitalia, loud enough for my young grandson to hear. They were " F" this and " MF" that. Even one of them said loudly " eeeeww, that's nasty". The manager was rude, aggressive, and should not be in customer service. I was ready to call police. Corporate office was called and regional and district managers will be notified. This " manager" literally picked up this ladies piles of change and threw it at her all over floor when she ask for a refund. I was about ready to punch him. The assistant manager lady came over and picked up this senior citizens money. In Fact after this managers behavior I didn't purchase anything. I and a couple other customers walked out. read more

So I came in to this store and purchasing a fishing license. I talked to the cashier named JoAnn Nishimura. She is very horrible because she was trying to make a "sale" from me. While processing the paperworks for the fishing license, she was like... Have you purchased the fishing gears yet?. I was like..No, but I will borrow from a friend of mine. THEN... She was like..."Oh, DO YOU KNOW IT'S ILLEGAL TO BORROW PEOPLE FISHING RODS? You must purchase one and register it under your name. You can't borrow someone else fishing rod!!" hahahaha.... Come on lady!! This is the first time I have ever heard someone say such thing like that. Even if I need to buy a fishing rod, I STILL would NOT buy it at Big 5 because other places might be CHEAPER. I personally do not like to write negative reviews, but the cashier at this place was just too much. If this message will ever reach out to the store manager of this place, I highly recommend that you train your staff appropriately and professionally. Big 5 has great deals on sporting equipment. I have purchased many items in the past here and never had a problem with it. I once went fishing and I lost a piece of my fishing reel that held the spindle and rod together. I went back to the store and asked if they sold spare parts for my reel and was told they didn't. The manager asked me if I purchased the item at this store and I did. He went ahead and just gave me the part without any hassle. That's great customer service and I was very happy to have a working reel again. I was expecting to purchase a replacement part but they exceeded my expectations. Some of their productions may be entry level but I'm a novice and I don't need anything professional. They do carry a majority of items that you would find at a sporting goods store. read more

This might just be one of the smallest Big 5's I've ever been to. They have a lot of stuff crammed into every space, but the selection of gear and clothes is very vey limited. I came yesterday to try to find some resistance bands and some Nike legend tops. I only saw 1 package of flimsy resistance bands that weren't priced and decided to pass on them, because most everything in the store was way overpriced. Then I decided to take a look at the workout tops and they had very limited sizes. They had a lot of larges left and what's weird is that these tops should be on sale, because it's winter and they were still at full price. To me this store seems to be outdated on their stock and pricing. I ended up not finding what I needed and left pretty disappointed. Unfortunately I can't recommend a store that doesn't have fair pricing on their items nor doesn't carry a decent selection of workout gear. Better luck next time I suppose. read more

You're better off at Dick's. Awful experience during pandemic. Store open for curbside. NO WAY to order online for curbside pickup. Staff would look for your merchandise when you give them stock number or show item on your phone. Very inefficient. Indecisive customers want to see a bunch or merchandise forcing limited staff to go back and forth to retrieve merchandise while line waits. Staff just generally overworked and ate grumpy (so what else is new at this store?). Message to management: You seriously need to get your act together. Service was never good before the pandemic and much worse now. Not a good idea to alienate valuable customers with grumpy staff while businesses collapse every day and go into bankruptcy. Upgrade your website to do curbside properly like other retailers. Treat every customer with respect and not as an inconvenience to the grumpy staff. Do not allow patrons to wait in line because your system is grossly inefficient and set up where one unprepared customer can hold up the line for all. Give instructions to those waiting in line to have the stock numbers or their phones ready. Then I might give your business another chance. read more

I went with my father to big 5 today to get some snow boots and glows for his birthday trip and I wasn't near him and he went to ask 2 white teens and 1 Asian teen and since he doesn't speak well English he asked them if they have soft furry pants and they didn't understand him so he went to go find it himself but as I was about to ask them if they have a size available and they were talking so much stuff about my father the way he was walking and That he shouldn't come into the store and not know English that's really unprofessional and racist I told the cashier what happened but I don't think they will have a punishment I will give them 1 star because I had to get my boots since no other store had them in my size read more

Despite still being a little cramped on space, this Big 5 location still has some semblance of order. The aisles are clear and the layout makes good sense...which I can't say for other Big 5 locations (*ahem* in San Francisco). They also stock items that other Big 5 locations do not carry which is nice. Price-wise, I find that Big 5 will always win out over bigger (nicer) sporting/outdoor stores like REI, Dick's, and Sports Authority...so I admit, there are times that I do my window shopping at those locations, then check if Big 5 carries it too. Big thing to keep watch of though. Know your prices before checking out. There have been a few times where the scan price did not match the actual label on the item...always scanning for a price higher than listed. The cashier will quickly correct it, but only if you catch it. read more

Surprised this place is still up and running. Their customer service sucks! I called to see if they had some sports equipment in store, I was transferred and placed on hold for a long time. Hung up and called back again only to get a broad answer when I was looking for something in particular. Decided to come in and check myself if they had what I needed. Barely any customers in the store so I was thrown off as to why I was put on hold for so long. Thanks to the crew in San Bruno store for checking. Headed to the Daly City store (no customer around) found one lantern but not working as well. I asked a lady worker if they have more in stock. She told me straight up the whatever's at the shelf, that's all they have. Not even checking around or check their inventory. They also have a good collection of antique weapons and air rifles. I brought my remington 870 here (hunting) and my Mossberg 500 (home defense) They usually have a sale every month that undercuts the competion by $100. Also the managers will usually give you a 10%-15% on any ammo you buy when you pay for your guns. This place kicks ass. If you crazy hippies try to shut them down I WILL shoot you. read more

There's a massive Sports Authority across the street - stick to that. Unfortunately Sports Authority and none of the shoe stores in Serramonte had the specific shoes I was looking for so I reluctantly stopped in Big 5 around 8:30pm on a weeknight. I casually browsed the shoes while overhearing two employees joking about which one gets to go on their smoke break. I looked around and saw at least 5 employees on the floor, one running the cash register and the other 4 strolling the floor, joking with each other, taking their smoke breaks, not offering to help me. I didn't find the shoes I was looking for, but did find a pair of clearance shoes that were a good buy. I got in line, behind 7 other people that were already waiting. One cashier, 4 other employees doing nothing. 15 minutes later I was STILL in line and the line grew longer behind me. Still only one cashier and 4 employees doing nothing. The manager didn't even have the respect to apologize for the wait or address at all for that matter. When I did finally reach the register the price didn't ring up correctly, but the unpleasant cashier corrected it when I pointed it out. With the abundance of sporting good stores within half a mile of this Big 5, there is absolutely no reason anyone should shop here. read more

I never really went into Big 5 until recently. It's got an entirely different feel than Sports Authority across the street. Whereas SA has this big box, modern corporate feel, I get more of an old-fashioned sporting goods vibe from Big 5. Lots of guns and ammo here, as well as sleeping bags and camping equipment. You get a little of everything at Big 5, and when you throw in the good customer service that we experienced, you get a place that you want to return to regularly. Some of their sales are pretty insanely good as well. Parking here is a bit tight, and there is no public restroom, but for general sporting goods overall, this is my choice. read more

There is a reason why people welcomed Sportsmart or now Sports Authority when it first opened. The parking lot is hard to come in out with all the traffic from the Washington Mutual and Boston Market. The stuff inside are fairly low quality and scatter all around the store. The staff are slow, physically and mentally. The only thing Big 5 has going is their guns and fishing supplies. They are the only chain in the bay area that still carries guns and live ammo. They until Sports Authority usually has fishing licenses in stock. read more

I went to Sports Authority across the street to look for some golf apparel/gear and didn't have any luck so I thought that I'd try Big 5 since I'm already in the area. Went in and it's horrific. There were clothes and equipment all over the floor. The employees weren't all too help either. It's just a sad cluttered mess. I felt claustrophobic! The hat area (I was looking for a hat) was just a huge rack of unorganized and outdated hats. Never coming here again. read more
